    I've owned two MT09s and I have to agree, the engine is the reason. The power is in that sweet spot, where you go through the gears, fully engaged in the ride, unlike a super naked where you can lose your licence in 2nd or 3rd... It's so much fun, howls like a banshee when opened wide, and affordable to Joe Average.

      Low competition. 95% of the morons (including this video) spend 80% of the time talking about a spec sheet you can look up on Yamaha's web page, then say "oh yeah man it handles well this year, and I like the engine."
      Idiots.

      I feel exactly the same. If you want a sports bike, i'd buy a sports bike, but these nakeds are about all round use and if you're doing 250 mile days out at times like me, you want more comfort, not to be squeezed up in a cramped position. The new MT09 is now lower on the shortlist of bikes that I'm interested in. Current no1 is the Suzuki GSX-S1000.

      I regularly tour on my 2023 mk3 mt09. I can do 400 miles per day for a week with no discomfort. While still having a blast in the twisties and even on track.
      There was no need to make it sportier imho, it was a perfect balance for having only one bike.

      Too relaxed. Everyone complained about it having a light front end. I do not want a bike that is "vague." I'll lean just a little bit to be planted.
      Somehow my Multistrada 1200S is very relaxed in the riding position and doesn't feel vague to me at all, but it was also $21k.

    This is another superb review from Bennett’s. I have to say, I watch all the big players but Simon Hargreaves’s is in a different league. His technical knowledge is outstanding, he’s always entertaining and can pretty much ride the wheels off anything, the new Africa Twin ride was seriously impressive!
    I had an MT10 and adored the bike but if I were in the position to buy again this would be the pick, once the sp model comes out at least.

    Great review and the only one I recall mentioning cruise control being an added feature to the ‘base’ model.
    My question is on the brakes which seem to be Yamaha’s Achilles Heel: does the addition of the Brembo radial master cylinder make the brakes good enough for road use? I’m sure the SP with its Stylema calibres will be better but I’m wondering if that bike will be worth the extra $$ over this unless you intend to ride 10/10 or on the track?

    Nice review thank you. I’m interested in your comment about the earlier generation being a bit more motard (long fork & higher steering head?) vs this one being more sporty. I loved that motard feel, I’m wondering if it lost some of that character that made the gen1 & 2 so much fun? E.G. Does more weight over the front wheel make it less forgiving of poor surfaces? Put another way; is more sophisticated actually more fun on the battered country roads we’ve been pushed out to by population growth?

    Thanks for a superb review of the ever-improving MT-09. Although still no Italian stallion in the looks department, a definite improvement over the previous iteration. In terms of value, it’s excellent I’d argue. A comprehensive electronics suite, great riding dynamics, looks to be well built and finished; a bike you won’t regret buying after parting with the precious folding. Any concerns? I would have liked only half the foot peg dimension alterations; looks a tad cramped and sporting to me for longer rides. Can’t remember what you said about seat comfort, Simon, but I assume there’s reasonable padding provided? And that’s it, can’t say I’m enamoured with the colour options but they wouldn’t be a deal breaker.

    • @writestuffmedia
      @writestuffmedia 3 місяці тому

      Cheers Nigel. We only did about a tankful on the launch ride, so I can't totally comment on the comfort in terms of a big distance - but we were on the bike for most of the day and I didn't feel cramped. But it IS - as Yamaha acknowledge - a more compact riding position than before. I would say it gives the rider better feel for the front end tbh.
      I *DO* remember riding away from the hotel first thing in the morning and thinking "Blimey, this fits just right" within about 20 yards.

    • @writestuffmedia
      @writestuffmedia 3 місяці тому +4

      Good question, but to my mind the GSX-8S is at the top end of the parallel twin streetbikes where it's a better machine than, say, Yamaha's MT-07. The MT-09 is playing a slightly upmarket game compared to the Suzuki - it's a significantly better spec in terms of electronics package (for a start, the Suzuki hasn't got anywhere near this level of sophistication, nor has it got cruise control), it's got better suspension, and it's a significantly more powerful motor. And it's more expensive.
      I love the Suzuki, but I think it's at the top of a different class of bike - the MT-09 is literally in a different league. If I could afford the MT-09, that's the one I'd buy.

Or r9 if that actually is a thing next year. 8s is great but for being a semi new rider I don’t need the extra power of the mt09 just yet. I would recommend the 8s. The Quickshifter is great, it’s comfortable, after tune and exhaust it’s even better.

      @UFGgamings 3 місяці тому

      @@gogomoto5936 well, I rode both. I rode a 21 mt09 and a 23 8s with tune and exhaust. I thought the 8s was more fun actually. The suspension was pretty mediocre on both bikes. The mt09 is very powerful, I'd be afraid to lose my licence. I also thought the rear shock was meh. I think the 8s is closer than most people think. Yes the mt09 is faster and has more electronic wizardry, but the 8s actually gets close if you want fun. I care about value for money and on that front, I think the 8s is actually better. I think over all, the '24 mt09 does appeal to me more than the '21 mt09. The better front end is what is most appealing, als well as cruise. I might have to spend the extra...

    • @writestuffmedia
      @writestuffmedia 3 місяці тому +1

      I rode the 890 SMT v a Tracer 9 GT a few months ago with RiDE magazine. I think the KTM has a more dramatic punch to its performance - it really pummels the tarmac - and I think the MT-09 is a slightly less... *manic* bike most of the time. The KTM really begs to be ridden super-hard and that's when its suspension and steering dynamic really works. The MT-09 is a bit more easy-going, or flexible, so you can doss about on it with more satisfaction. But it's also got an edge when you pull the pin. It's just not quite as much of a grenade as the KTM... in several senses of the word 😆
      From a practical and ownership point of view, I'd feel a lot happier with a Yam tbh - styling is subjective but the Yamaha looks like a better finish quality; the KTM seems a bit plasticky to me.

      Not ridden it, but just looking at the spec it's a cut above the 09 in terms of price - it's nearly £3000 more (and that's before you add the quickshifter and full electronics). Still got the power of a sports bike but great for longer rides this seems more going towords sportbikes. Ive sold my R1 for this 2023 MT09 and megger happy with the riding position and power. We not allowed to go more than 100mph on uk motoways anyway and the power from the mt09 up to speed limit is just as fast if not faster than the R1. Basically if i wanted a racebike i would of stuck with the R1. The new 2024MT09 is nice but is the riding position better to me its about the ride yes got better bits on it like new dash satnav brilliant if you use it if you dont like the man in the review whats the point riding position does NOT look better than the 2023 and to me thats what its all about

    New headlights look awful. The seating position isn't comfy anymore. I'm very happy with my 2022 mt09sp. I was considering to get new gen R1M, but with it's cancellation I don't see a reason to get mt10sp which isn't sporty enough and the new mt09 is just tuned down mt10. Sport is 22R1M, Comfort is 22MT09SP.

    Excellent as usual Mr H. I don't expect anything less from you now 😁👍. That is one ugly exhaust! 14 litre tank and playing with the engine would suggest it's primary function is a Sunday afternoon blast machine.

    I know what you are saying about the engine Simon! I'm torn... I'd love that engine but I also want my next bike to have a fairing, so the XSR900 and MT09 are out, the Tracer 9 GT is too ugly to love and the GP is probably too sporty in terms of ergos. Argh 😂

    • @writestuffmedia
      @writestuffmedia 3 місяці тому +1

      Hmmm... I know it's a bit pricier, but I thought the Tracer GT+ stepped up the paint finish a bit & looked much nicer than the GT. But yeah, for me a lot is riding on the riding position of the GP. Sat on it at the show and it didn't feel too radical - nothing like the the BMW R9T Racer or Ducati Sportclassic Paul Smart. So there's hope!

      @@writestuffmedia The GT+ would still be a matter of head over heart... I know it would be a great bike to own but will I want to take pictures of it in the setting sun? Hmmm 😁Certainly planning a test ride on the GP when demos turn up the shops!

    Noooo. They removed the motard feeling on it :( It was a hooligan bike and looked freaking mean. Now it's a naked sportsbike that looks like they stole some headlight from Suzuki. If I was in the market for a naked sportsbike I can find so many better options. But if I wanted a motard feeling, playful sort of insane bike I don't even know what to get. It was unique. It's now mainstream.

    • @MH-xd2nd

      Part of it are the new regs that bikes must have a central (running? Or maybe low beam) light. It’s why so many bike headlights now have a central light with other lights arranged around them (new KTM headlight, 1300GS etc). The unfortunate side effect is that many brands seem to given their designer’s kids some crayons just after they finished watching Transformers. At least this one is an improvement on the previous MT-09. Just go back to building attractive bikes! Simon did mention the XSR900 for more traditional looks with the same engine.

      I prefer a proper looking headlight like on my 2019 MT07, I can't see how the little one can light up the road. The Suzuki V-Strom 800 is basically the same and Nathan the Postman says them light are crap at night. We just need more visibility and to be more visible. Some people ride all year around whatever the weather, lights are important.

      There are a lot of people who don't like the mt09 look. I think this one looks ok. To be honest- for me, it is more important how rider feels riding this bike. That's why so many people like it. Because of the bikes' character. I still didn't find a bike that made me feel like this bike do.. I can't stop smiling every time I am riding mt.

      @@gogomoto5936 I agree with both of you - yes, I think it looks... just enough with the whole Manga look already. So bored of it. But at the same time, when it feels as good as it does to ride, I can get past the styling because it's fricken awesome.
