I was driving home today after visiting my father in an assisted living place for the 1st time. My heart gave way to such abandon love and sentiment seeing him, when I heard this played on the radio in the car. I agree Will Ross, it was eye watering...tears just poured down. Beautiful.

I find it hard to believe this is really you. But if it is, or if it is an assistant who reports back to you, then I'd like to express some more appreciation of this especially exquisite performance. I love how generous the 'cello is in this rendition: having fulfilled its role completely, it simply withdraws and leaves the real fullness of the music to the piano. An astonishingly sensitive collaboration. And whoever filmed it captured this beautifully in the faces.@Yo-yomaofficial

Oh goodness, then I had better come clean and confess that this is almost the only performance of yours that I've ever heard... The youtube algorithm sent me the link a couple of years ago (perhaps I had been listening to Rostropovitch playing the two Haydn concertos?). On foot of listening to it I was sent links to some other things you did with Kathryn Stott and listened, I think, to 'Somewhere over the rainbow" but I'm just not that interested in more popular music or light classics etc. Although I hardly ever listen to anything I am definitely a classical music person: I am not a consumer of music, I look for nourishment, not entertainment. Most classical music doesn't do this either, there's too much histrionics and self-indulgence, which is fine when you're young and want emotional agitation, but these days I'm more interested in emotional good health in music. Very rare! So much easier to convey tension and unhappiness than fulfilment. Which is why I'm so delighted to find this example of it from Rachmaninov: this couple of minutes can nourish me for days. Normally now I prefer silence and birdsong!
Since we began this exchange a few days ago youtube is sending me your Bach suites and I have listened to the Bourees from the third suite. (I am a former amateur 'cellist and this was one of the suites I played). I found this performance very interesting. Normally I don't like the way 'cellists play the suites - often they toss them off like something inconsequential, whereas I feel they need room and time to be as massive as they truly are - but your rendition was different again. A kind of breathiness in the tone quality here and there which I would expect to detract from the magnitude of the music but which, in this case, perhaps combined with your rubato, produced an intimacy and variety in the performance. I thought this suited this movement well but I don't know how you play the others! (Maybe I will listen to them, or then again, maybe not... I don't just listen to things lightly, as you may be gathering.)
