I bought a new Dragonfly 800 in 1992 and raced her with my wife and two small sons on and around San Francisco Bay for ten years. Heavy air is pretty normal in the summertime. We never reefed upwind, just twisted the main off. Important not to overload the leeward ama - slow if you do. Target speed upwind 12-14 knots. But she was quite safe because if the main hull was lifting out of the water, the rudder would lose effectiveness and the boat would spin out safely to windward, much like an over-powered keelboat. Downwind with spinnaker quite another matter, always worried about pitchpoling as she took off down the waves. The strong wind against an ebb tide makes for very nasty steep seas, rated by the US Navy as one of the ten most dangerous spots in the world. You can blow the spinnaker sheet really quickly, but the main will only go out so far because of the shrouds so we would often reef downwind. We only had one real scare, the demon of the South Tower reached out one day and we ended up with the stern way in the air, probably about a 60 degree angle. The boat hung for a moment, then rotated onto the starboard ama, spun to port and fell back to level with a thump. Whew. What a great boat, strong, fast and safe, most importantly even when things get out of hand. Kind of sorry to see her go, but we moved away from the Bay area and now have a Catana 39 in the Caribbean (warm water!)

I have the DF 28 Performance and everything Jens says is true, always feel safe and handles big seas really well

You mentioned a comparison with monohull in this video: if you shoot a video with tri and mono side by side in strong weather, it will be quite popular on UA-cam and very educational for people considering a trimaran purchase.

Another demo of the seaworthiness superiority of trimarans over monohulls, even in choppy wave conditions. The extra volume of the Performance inverted bow amas is helping further in these rougher conditions. May we have the pleasure to watch soon the DF 32 Evolution performing on the same windy day when the videos of the DF 40 and DF 28 were shot? Another big windy day is also fine! Congratulations Quorning Team!

I'm here because I saw one on a trailer going past Leicester on the M1. I had to look it up.

Nice to see some waves (albeit not North Sea waves!) in a Dragonfly video. Thanks.

Hi, I am living in Japan.
I think DF28 is a great trailable sailing-boat ,but we can not own it here in Japan because of our laws and regulations.
I found the width (Beam folded) is 2.54m . It a pity that only 0.04m is longer than our laws and regulations (Our regulation is less than 2.5m).
Adding to that, when we put a boat(length 30feet) in the marina, it costs us about 10,000 US dollars a year for the only storage of a boat normally.

nobody is able to eyeball that 0.04m difference, not even without some precision tools.

    Fantastic!
This is the second video in which you are defending the boats' capabilities in strong winds/chops. I don't understand who those critics are, since multihulls are well-known to be very capable sailboats.
My only criticism for such beautiful yet expensive boats: lack of ergonomics. The seating and lack of proper back support are too minimalist.
    Cheers 😎👍👍

Very cool, comparable speed to the 60 ft. boats currently doing the Vendée Globe...

      But a bit more affordable.
Not sure about taking it to the Southern Ocean, though! 🤔

The biggest problem of this kind of boat is no room inside.

Why in the world would you want to sleep in the middle of the day when you could be in the cockpit having the time of your life?? 🤩🤩
