Nice load out, man! Winter does affect your gear needs but to me there's nothing like camping in the winter, especially in snow conditions. I love the sound of rain and snow hitting the tops of my tarp or tent. For your stakes just place them in a freezer one gallon ziploc bag and either a small hair band or rubber band around the bag. When you extract the stakes from the ground, you'll appreciate placing them in a plastic bag rather than straight back into your pack. I know you have a stove to warm your tent but a hack I use is place activated hand warmers in the foot box before climbing into the sleeping bag. I bushcraft camp and use a 32oz Pathfinder single wall water bottle. I either boil water or place the Pathfinder directly on top of hot coals, place a long hunter's wool sock over the bottle, twist the top and bring the sock back down over the bottle effecting a double layer of warm wool. I place that in my footbox and when I get in my bag it is toasty warm. I usually hammock camp. I found a rechargeable hand warmer on Amazon that has four warmth levels indicated by blue LEDs, 4 being warm(!). If the temps drop below freezing I'll "cuddle" the hand warmer to keep my core warm. It comes in a nice suede pouch. On level 4 I get about 5 to 6 hours of use unless I hook it up with an Anker battery. Twenty two pounds including a stove is a great winter base weight.

      Thanks for the comment!
I actually looked at one of those Zippo catalytic hand warmers, but was concerned about using it in the sleeping bag... will have to check out one like you are talking about.
Agreed about the sound of snow on the the tent... nothing like it :)

22 lbs and 47 liters is a great load out for winter camping. I packed the mega horn in the other weekend (38 lbs and 85 liters) 🤣🤣. Need some snow so I can pull in with my pulk. Was cool to see your load out. Take care brother 🤙

I am ready for the pulk sled myself... there was actually enough snow on my last trip that I could have used it, which was surprising.
      Stay safe, dude.

Spot on!! You covered everything I plan on taking this fall elk hunting. Just bought the same tent. I usually go solo so I also take the inreach mini. I will probably take a tiny roll of bailing wire in case I want to hang dry gear closer to stove area. Happy trails brother!!

Great video Scott. Winter camping does take a bit of switching out gear to make it comfortable. Looks like you have your gear dialed in. Interesting that you only use a 30 degree bag. I would have thought you would need at least a zero. Time to head to the hills! Take care and be safe out there.

I put that down 30 degree quilt inside a 40 degree synthetic when running the hot tent. It keeps coals for around 3 hours which keeps the chill out. Would bring more if I was just using a normal tent.
Hope you had fun in the hills :)

If I ever took up winter camping it would have to be a hot tent...

I've just converted to one of those folding egg box type mats and I like it a lot takes away the risk of punctures. I tried out a sheepskin rug last time and I think pairing that with a quilt would be really nice!

    • @RestlessWonderer
      @RestlessWonderer  3 роки тому +1

That does sound like it would be a snuggly setup. I like an airmat to get off the ground, but you really need a close-celled pad to keep warm.

Nice video. I also use a carbon monoxide sensor. Do you use a baffle in your stove?

What stove did you have, I saw the video but forgot? I eventually want a more lite set up for hiking or skis. My stuff is to heavy without my snowmobile. Glad I found you , I watch as many hot tent videos as possible. It’s great to see hikers hot tent instead of battling the cold. 😊❤️🇺🇸❄️☃️🛷🔥⛺️🌄

Did you really just pull out that hatchet without a blade guard or sheath on it ? What ?

    • @RestlessWonderer

Really good comment and the first one who as said anything. I couldn't find my sheath, and this turned into a small problem on my most recent trip.
