Always, and I too want to see what Ferrari's sparkplugs look like. Peter makes the point about F1 being an engineering sport beautifully. I grew up in racing and never really enjoyed spec series. Max is absolutely on the level of greatest drivers in this sport. But the beauty of this sport is you can make arguements for a lot of drivers to be considered goat status. Senna, Schumacher, Hamilton, Prost, Jim Clark, Fangio, Verstappen, Alonso, Vettel, Lauda, ect. If you’re a fan of any of those drivers you can easily make an arguement for them being goat, and that’s the fun of it.

Sorry, disagree. GOAT is the one who won the most, had the best win percentage, etc. I love Alonso, I'm Austrian so naturally I'm a big Lauda fan, but Hamilton is the GOAT at the moment (and I don't really like him) and Verstappen will very likely pass him to be the new GOAT. The whole discussion of "talent" is useless, because if someone had so much talent, why didn't he win more? Verstappen won races before he sat in the Red Bull. And Perez sits in the same car and is useless in most races, so it's clearly not just the car either.

It's a fine day when a new video lands in your feed And a great day when an episode of The Shakedown hits too. And a splendid day when Peter Windsor is your guest. Thank you!
8:00 - 12:00: My indescribably unexpected interest in Formula 1 sprang from (after much procrastinating) binging the first four seasons of Drive to Survive. I guess that puts me in the "Netflix generation" ... in my dotage! But what the series made me appreciate was some of what Peter refers to: especially the excitement of contests and struggles other than among the front runners. It seemed to me that even Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen didn't arrive center stage until well into the series. Admittedly, when it brought the misery of Williams pre-Doriton to the fore it neglected the context -- the legendary history of that team and of Frank Williams and Patrick Head, but that was enough to provoke my curiosity. It certainly made clear through the Haas narrative how much the sport was about big money. And it also made clear that there was plenty of political posturing and mind-f#*king going on between principals and a lot of controversy about the decisions of the race manager and stewards.
I don't think one can lay at the feet of DTS the whin(g)ing from "fans" about how "boring" it is that Max/RedBull is having so far a brilliant year: even a cursory scan at the comments that show up on your and Peter's videos make clear that there's a large cadre of folks who mostly care about the object of their affections winning the World Driver's Championship and -- seemingly -- little else. (My favorite tinfoil-hat comments have to do with RedBull deliberately sabotaging Sergio Perez. It's equally telling to read the many comments on Peter's videos complaining about his British bias when he can create a whole video celebrating Max's driving technique.) I sense a lot of "fans" are mostly interested in maximum carnage (a/k/a maximum overtakes?). Like Peter, I would love to get to hear Zak Brown pitch to Wall Street investors (or hear Toto Wolff at a Daimler Board meeting); I think a majority of "fans" would either howl or snore. As for the fascinating cutting-edge technical developments, I think Liberty deserves credit for at least having an ongoing (watch "Mr. Wizard" like) series in their UA-cam feed. Likewise the history and "inside baseball" elements of the sport which, I think, are really well represented in Beyond the Grid interviews.

NFL Films should document Drive To Survive in the same way they film Hard Knocks. 1 narrator and focused on what creates the performance we see on game day or race weekend. They may be more people interested in the glitz and glamour but there’s a good number of people who want to see how the cake is made and how it impacts the car and team. It’s the only sport that a team can win in multiple areas: race weekend - the season - an individual driver - and the future. The short and long game strategy should be explained. Great content!

I think you both underestimate the phenomenon of the fan. For me personally as a Formula 1 enthusiast, I have been a changeable fan and the main reason for this is that I do feel attracted to Formula 1 only by the presence of a specific driver. My interest in Formula 1 started in the late Senna era and ended when Michael Schumacher announced his retirement. Despite the talent Lewis Hamilton was already present at the time, it turned out that Lewis apparently did not appeal to me as a driver. And I lost interest and stopped watching Formula 1. Until suddenly there was the moment of some crazy kid from the Netherlands. From literally his first race, this boy almost immediately caused a sensation on the track. This kid had some balls and bravado that I loved. it reminded me of the types Ayrton and Michael 2 talents who in no way compromised their character and their ambitions in an almost extreme way. And now there was that 17-year-old boy with the same fire and a look that I don't give a damn about what others think of me. Those kind of personalities have attracted me to watching formula 1 and actually applies to all branches of sport, people want to see a Messie or a Ronaldo that makes their sport their favorite. For example, a Lewis is a completely different personality than the one mentioned earlier. A person who is very sensitive to his environment and how he is seen by them. And that, despite his great talent, is just a little too ordinary and therefore too predictable. But Lewis has perhaps the largest fan base a driver has ever had for precisely that reason :-)

  • @KS-qf1pn

I agree with Peter Windsor, myself being a F1 follower for over 30 years, in that drivers come and go, and if you follow the sport because you like a specific driver, you will get disappointed at some stage. I was a huge Senna supporter, but I had to change my perspective following his death.
IMO support ALL drivers, and learn to appreciate all aspects of the sport, especially the “tech arms race” for the most superior car. ONLY with decent cars can the best drivers be able to take the competition to the next level like Lewis and Max and Alonso is currently. Having said all that, just look and appreciate what Alex Albon achieved in Canada with his P7..! , and James Vowles trying to revamp the old Williams team..it’s amazing.
F1 is great spectacle measured in million’s of $’s and in milliseconds, with the very best engineers and drivers pitted against each other..
Finally I believe all the fans now complaining about a boring F1 scene are hypocritical since we all had to sit and watch 7 years of domination by MB and Lewis Hamilton, now standing at 103 victories.. this is supporting my position that F1 supporters should learn to appreciate all aspects the sport, and appreciate EVERY single driver..
