I disagree. Windsor is good. I'm not sure he is seeing the forest for the trees, so to speak. How much of what he is analyzing is rooted in the driver's car? Face it, some of these cars are better the drivers and most are considerably worse. For every LH on a perfect line, there are 4 midfielders wringing the daylights out of sub-par equipment. Yep, their lines are questionable...they may not have a choice.

@@_SpamMe yes I remember them comparing to his teammate Johnny Herbert. Schumacher braked earlier but carried more speed through.
Has everyone missed that this conclusion is the EXACT same conclusion as done on the Schumacher vs Herbert (mid nineties) and Senna vs Palmer (late eighties) BBC analysis videos.
It’s the same conclusion, brake early and light, scrub as little speed as possible mid corner.

It s somewhat a pity that Max is in such a fast car; 6 5 and 4 years ago he had to overtake many drivers, something he could like only a few others can. I always loved the way he all of a sudden overtook someone who wasnt expecting an overtake right then and there. The guy he wanted to overtake brake hard and tried to rotate his car, max first braked hard, then let the brake go a bit and let his car slip through and passing the other guy. Always nice to watch. Well and in the wet he is one of a kind (Brazil).
Max I will admit that he has an undeniable skill at driving,given time he will have at minimum 1 world championships.
I think as he gains more experience this will become more of a reality.he is from what I have seen he is very aggressive when he overtakes early on.
This new era with him and Lewis and perhaps with the new cars more involved is something special.
Schumacher had two main rivals in general senna who unfortunately was at the end of his short career and Mika hakkienen.mika was always a threat to Schumacher. Alonso too,no disrespect but I certainly remember mika and Schumacher battling for wins.yes Schumacher had a very dominant run but he wasn't unbeatable.
This is coming from a jacques villeneuve fan too.yes I went from liking senna,hill,mansell,villeneuve, Schumacher and hakkinen along with Lewis.
So how is it not pity that hamilton has the fastest car for 7 years and running?
I think your right, if they let him drive in belgium last weekend and he would haven not been in the front he would drive like he did in brazil, but we will never know.
Every great driver has delivered stunning drives in the wet. Max is not one of a kind.
@@joelambert7128 so, you're counting him among the greats, right ? And not everyone is a great driver. So, he is "special" in that way, you can say.
This may sound absurd... but for those of us who are sadly too young to have witnessed Senna, I am glad that we have Max. He was too eager at points in his early F1 career, but I think that we are now witnessing something that doesn't come around too often; and we should appreciate it.
Maybe you weren't around from 08-16 when peter talked about lewis like this. max is certainly on that level and has been for the last couple years, its just that now hes finally in the wdc fight, and possibly taking the torch from an aging lewis.

@@chocholatesenna1176 I was around for the majority of those years, and I agree that Lewis was an absolutely fantastic driver, but I think that today's field of drivers is only getting stronger, and therefore Max probably has a tougher time of making a name for himself when compared to Hamilton, especially when you consider how Hamilton started his F1 career in a car that had the potential of winning championships. He was bound to look good from the get-go.
Max on the other hand is the youngest person to race in F1, and is quite literally ending people's careers should they end up in the second Redbull seat, almost to the point where it's probably a very bad career move for anybody to make now despite Redbull being the best or second best car this year - depending on what track you're at. I don't believe we've seen inter-team dominance of the level that Verstappen is creating in certainly the years I have been watching F1.
This year I believe we are seeing Max at the best he has been. He would have finished 1st or 2nd in every single race he's started had he not suffered 2 DNF's, both of which were not really his fault, and unless Mercedes can gain some car advantage then I believe Max will take this Championship, even without Perez in the fight, such is the level of his driving at present.
I am not a Verstappen fan, I support another driver, but wow, one can't help but admire what he is able to do.
@@TrezenEN Im mostly in agreement. In a way, were getting the senna v schumi that we never got in the 90s here. At the same time, lewis v alonso was a much harder challenge than any teammate max has had yet and lewis took it on year one.
I like ricciardo - i think hes a potential 1x wdc in a car he gels with like the rb - a bit better than a button in his prime or .75-.9 of an alonso. Other than that max hasn't really dominated any wdc potential talents, and his domination of Ricciardo is debatable.
Me i go by tiers - Fangio, Clark, senna, Schumi, lewis, max - all tier 0 - i dont think anyone of these drivers could consistently beat the others, all things being equal (same ages, exp, etc). (For reference alo, prost niki, piquet, etc i have as tier 0.5)
Only thing i think max has to learn is the live to fight another day mentality that lewis has learned since 2016. After that hes the perfect driver like a lewis senna etc.
The only thing i personally dont like is that lewis is getting old and as weve heard possibly suffering from long covid. I just hope he can keep giving us 100% for 3ish more years.

Simracing have been pretty underrated in the past decade, it is only now that it gets a lot more atention and real racing teams have been grabbing onto simulators. Ive done it myself for years to, for sure you dont have G-Force's but there are a lot of stuff you can develop when being on the sim. Racecraft and understanding of the car if the correlation to real is done right etc. Im not suprised to see guys like Lando, Max, Charles and George doing so well, they all have a history with simracing as well. Cant be coincedence.
Similar thing I heard being talked about with footballers playing football games. Helped them understand roles and pitch positions from different angles. Interesting for sure.
Johan Basten also if you’re able to tell what is going to make the car lose grip without any feeling from the car, then when you add that feeling from the car you can add the two together to maximise grip and racecraft
It probably helps with mental aspect as well, putting yourself in a racing environment (even if it’s virtual) in between races can make you more prepared.
Lando and Max are the best exploiting track limits. Definitely a sim thing since IRL you can get away with a lot more than on sim ironically
Like his Brazilian wet race. He is capable of improvising on the go and choose alternative lines.

Max also uses slight oversteer to get additional rotation and that allows him to accelerate earlier out of the corner.
That comes with slightly early braking, coupled with soft stall on the Red Bull’s front end to produce the oversteer while still keeping the rear traction in hand to get quicker on power

He is manipulating the car and rotating it, often not braking loose the rear, but rotation even just bending the rear tires sometimes. Agree?

@@Conservator. defo, he's holding the weight balance forward under braking to quicken the rate of rotation. If you watch his Sim videos he's on the power while he's just coming off the final few % of brake pedal travel
It also helps that the car has a shorter wheelbase, it is much easier to rotate and be nimble with in corners. By comparison the Mercedes is more prone to understeer due to its long wheelbase concept. Lewis apparently had to adjust his own driving style because it was faster to drive the Merc with it set to understeer then to oversteer.
The presenters have often commented on how relaxed Max is before the race.
@Full of Mischief Agreed on that. I have the same when driving a Kart. No anxiety, just calm feelings - which gives me all my processing power for the drive. I can confirm that the outside world does slow down when in race mode. Max was raised in a Kart. He's the most natural born driver I have ever seen.
Last race or the previous he was interviewed and asked if he was nervous or how nervous he was (like rate it from 1 to 100) and he was like "why would I be nervous?". Can't remember the exact words but that was really nice to hear. Not like that other guy that plays desperado.

perfect analysis, Jos always said he could not understand why max is breaking less hard but is always faster in a GT car..... well this was it. Max also said het din't wana let the ABS do the breaking because it reacted wrong for his driving style.
yup, I had a discussion with a guy who explains racing on YT and he also said you need to hit the ABS, I don’t get that because it’s never better then braking on the limit before ABSS kicks in, not even ik normal road cars

And that's also the reason why the statement "your brakes are good enough as long as they can lock up the wheels" doesn't make any sense even though many seem to believe it thinking that it's then the tires which are a limiting factor once the ABS kicks in (Engineering Explained included, lol).
PS. Engineering Explained mentioned this when he was trying to prove his silly claim than no production car can accelerate faster than it can stop 0-60-0 which then later on Tesla Model S Plaid obviously did with it's sub-par brakes.
Triggering abs means you've applied too much break pressure. You trail brake into corners so to not under rotate.

Max brakes early but not as much and at the apex he is still carrying more speed. also a slight drag on the brake peddle keeps the front end loaded.
WHO KNOWS_ it was an fail diagnostic of the dates, break early or not is deeming dependent of the car you are driving,experience,plans A or B others ,even really tires preserving.

The exit of a corner is more important of the entry, earlier on the power the better.
Max was telling on Dutch Television, he was hoping to see the last drivers roll up on the back so he could start, because his breaks were on fire. He then say's he saw people making greats pictures while his car was getting lit up slowly But when you think of this, it was 1 to 2 sec's before the start!
Max has a big over capability of mind and senses. He can adapt so quickly, to any given changing aspect of the car or circuit. He will drive the car every year different, but always so it be the quickest.
Should you look into the data and try to copy this, you go mad. It can't be done, because it's touch and feel of the car and all variables at that given time.
That's why Pierre and Alex lost it mentally. You just know you can't find the key to that speed because it's wired into Max. It can't be copied.

A lot of words to say absolutely nothing
Although i have very limited racing driving experience, i'll say this, a lot of the races we saw Max change lines and brake early he was running lower DF setups, i think what makes Max maybe the most talented ever is the fact that he can adapt his driving to maximise the strengths, or find new strengths in the car, lower downforce means more unstable braking usually and a higher chance to lock up, and to maximise his low wing he seems to be taking different lines to keep his corner speed high and get a better exit. That's what i think he's doing.
What exactly ''perfect platform' ' and loading up with the steering means?. I would be pleased to know that from your side...
I think this perfectly aligns with what PW is saying. Max has the innate feel for the car, even with lower downforce, I presume.
@@aniketmeshram6598 loading up with the steering usually means when you turn you are loading the car more. The tires and aero are put under more stress but at the same time maximizing the potential of the cars performance. So for example alonso would load up the steering which created understeer at first but then got the nose pointed in the direction he wanted
Perfect platform, aka keeping the car “flat”, means you aren’t shifting around too much weight to any side of the car, it stays more in the middle. When you brake hard, the nose and whole car dips down forward, hence a lot of weight is being placed toward/on the front axel of the car. When accelerating, the opposite happens with all the eight on the rear and the car squats. So having too much weight on either axel or tire cause the car to not be balanced as it normally would. This leads to grip being unevenly distributed. Having a perfect platform ensures that the weight is evenly distributed across each tire, which makes it easier to put the power down so you can be sure to get a great exit out of the corner everytime.
So meaning his teammates are not able to run with the lower DF as well as Max most likely.
Max knows how to create brake drag and keep grip on the front tires. He also late brakes better than most and he uses the throttle to help rotate the car in corners. Max has been a fast driver for 4-5 years. If Red Bull had Mercedes engine platform he would be unbeatable. That’s why they won’t sell them any. They know that.
Honestly this is the best F1 channel on UA-cam.
In a layman's example: If you approach a roundabout at full speed and brake late, you'll be trying to get the car under control while turning. Brake a little sooner and you can settle/level the car and turn in more smoothly.

I livin a part of the NEtherlands ( Limburg) were Jos and Max is coming from. On a local TV station had a interview with them. Max was maybe 8 years old. They ask, how do you train Max. Jos his answer was, on a wet track, I gonna stand on the dry spots in corners, so he has to adept to the situation. And that is what he is doing now.
Whereas Lewis Hamilton's father made him brake later than everyone else was doing.

The doctors concluded that his late breaking was the issue. He will be racing the ambulance now for safety reasons at Hungaroring.

Apart from the explanation you've shared (which was great) there's another factor.
Even taking the exact same line, it's not only breaking, cornering consists of three speed related phases, breaking, letting the car roll, accelerating. Yes Max breaks early but he breaks for a shorter time then others, he lets the car roll quite long and starts accelerating early. That's what these new F1 cornering graphs show consistently, and it's why he takes turns faster than everybody, even than Lewis.
I feel good when I can manage a sweet drift in the snow LOL. This is a level of ability that I can't imagine. I love analyses of the very top levels of competency, whether it be race driving or competitive shooting or guitar playing or whatever. I'm so in awe of people like Max who take immense natural talent and combine it with relentless practical and personal preparation to become world beaters. Thanks for a very informative and inspiring analysis.

There's no question that Max is an excellent driver!
Kilimanjaro is an enormous mountain.Niagara Falls has huge water volume. The Porsche 918 is an extremely fast car. Hafthor Bjornsson is extremely strong.

This, i.e. driving analysis, is arguably your best genre of videos (aside from your GP retrospective ones, love those first-person accounts too) - the type you do better than all the rest of UA-cam F1 channels. Daniel Ricciardo was once asked by Nico Rosberg on his UA-cam channel who he thought was the faster ex-teammate, Seb or Max. Daniel gave it to Max for his natural raw pace.
I've seen that one. I think Max has gotten even better.
Very interesting observation. I recall Daniel beating Seb easily and then Max beating Daniel most of the time. Perhaps not most but he definitely seemed to have the edge.
I believe in Adrian Neweys book it was explained that Seb wasn’t as good at setting up his car as Mark Webber. I always wondered if part of why Sebs performances dipped because he lost his set up partner. At RB Seb did better with Webber and at Ferrari Seb did better when Kimi was there.
@@tdgarage4012 Whats interesting to me is the growth that was visible in Verstappen vs Ricciardo. In 2016 Ricciardo was generally better, but Max had those two standout performances in Spain and Brazil. In 2017 and the first 6-7 races of 2018 the pace was there, but Max got caught up in way too many incidents. From that point he just improved, cleaned up his act and got amazingly consistent.
@@philipbarton3456 Very intersting. Could explain why Vettel was untouchable in some races and looked very beatable in others and why he looked poor compared to rookie teammates and good vs veterans.
As far as I've read this is exactly how Ricciardo wants to drive and is where he is most comfortable. Unfortunately he is having to undo this technique to make the McLaren work as it unloads the front without hard braking.
Surely you are talking about being calm and relaxed before a race right? Because ricciardo is known for being a very late braker, not early.
@@ibbeats5183 You can still brake late and carry speed into the corner. Besides I think what you're talking about is his classic dive-bombs which only happen a few times a race. I'm talking about general driving and finding tenths. I watched another video discussing the difference between the red bull and the Mclaren and how they like to be driven to come to that conclusion.

There are some types of corners where you can brake late and this style will work. Usually long double apex corners.

Thank you for this excellent analysis. Always wondered why Max is so fast and makes different choices in braking. Also interesting maybe for a next analyses how some drivers can drive around problems. I have seen Max do that many times without loosing time. Senna is famous for it and also Lewis did it a couple of times.
This is one of your best videos. I'd like to hear your opinion on how these things relate to "the grates". Especially those of the downforce era. Lewis, Schumacher, Senna, Prost, etc.

Haha! As a professional juggler that's exactly how I visualised the thing. Fun fact, jugglers don't have good reflexes. We just know what technique to use to keep our patterns orderly, easy and as safe as possible. I takes a long time to learn but the goal is minimum input and maximum output- an easy pattern. First time jugglers are tired very quickly because of unnecessary movements. During your practice you learn to chiesel those movements away.
Thanks for this podcast really got tired of all other podcasts going into the crash at Silverstone. Max i awesome and so is Lewis and this analysis is way more interesting then them actually on and probably also off track from now on. Ps: for all people screaming racing incident: when Lewis had a racing incident with Albon Lewis apologized, because he is in the end an awesome guy and Albon was not threat to him. This season Max is and even if Lewis knows that it was more his fault he has way more psychological warfare effect from just letting this little row go on in the hope it gets to the young contender. In the end both Lewis and Max want this title and this is a real battle as we haven’t seen in years: let’s enjoy and may the best win. 😂 as long as that is Max

Great analysis Peter. In Keith Code’s book, “A Twist of the Wrist” he describes that one must reverse engineer each corner to maximize speed where it is most important. It appears that Max does this automatically in each corner to optimize total lap speed.
I do hope he is able to recover from a 52g crash. I can only imagine it may have damaged his internal gyros to feel what the car and the tires are transmitting to him.

I Always figure out that fellings on driving racing cars it makes difference, Although to advanced technology like sensors ,buttons concedding more or less power to engines,modern tires made in order to keep the car on safety during of extremes conditions, drivers whose never forgetting their own wortilly presence has kept themselves added team ahead in the pit line.
About that reflex vs calm mode, its funny how mich schumacher listening to nature sounds and mazepin listening to techno before they are racing 😅

Thank you Peter. This is the video I'll point to when trying to explain to folks the difference between causing and reacting to vehicle dynamics. Although I'm sure most will never truly understand or be able to apply what is necessary.
This video is almost a year old starting tomorrow and it’s probably the best video I’ve seen in the last few years. Very informative and especially growing up and watching NASCAR which I still love, but I have to give Mr. Windsor credit. Not only the analysis of this video but his overall channel gave me a different perspective on motorsports in general. In fact I find myself enjoying the more “boring races” in nascar which literally only means there wasn’t 1 billion lead changes and passes lol. But it also goes to show that driving styles isn’t talked about enough in NASCAR and while it would be different metrics, I couldn’t help but think how much it would benefit NASCAR to actually function as a Motorsport at times instead of trying to be like stick and ball sports. It’s sad that I’ve been a stock fan since 07’ and know more about F1 driver’s driving styles in a 2 year span since the pandemic started. To be fair, even Indycar doesn’t talk about this enough but I guess this is where the lessons begin.

I learned it that way.
Basically just throw one ball up with one hand, throw the other one under the first ball with your other hand, catch both, and repeat.
Anyone with good enough coordination can juggle and all drivers have that

Ah I missed this video during summer holiday. Definitely talking about trail braking here and the perfection/smoothness using it. Great stuff!
Would also explain why drivers like Max make little mistakes in the braking area. Trail braking gives a lot more options of correcting en optimizing the cornering speed.
Peter - are short corners the same as V corners? Also, how do you break in a straight line and still v the corners? I thought the latter required tailing the breaks to induce the weight to shift forward so the front end would bite. I know a lot of max/lewis/Charles’ ability to “shorten” corners depends on the subtlety of their inputs. Is there a way to help a non-race driver like me understand this? "I wanna be half asleep" That really sums it up for me, used to skate(board) alot, (still do). Whenever there's a scary new thing to try other people are hyping themselves up but no, always tried to distance myself and suddenly somehow, made it ! Weird thing the human mind.
Funny how that works. I've had the same experience with football when I was younger and climbing nowadays. I still remember saves I made as a goalkeeper where I was in a sort of trance and jumped for the corner before I even realised I reacted. It's this weird feeling where before you realise it you are in the air diving for a ball and it feels like you have all the time and control in the world. Same with climbing. If you think about it you can do it, but it's hard. When you hit your flow it just happens.

Nice videos once again! How would Alonso score on the four “metrics” of a great driver? Additionally, slightly of topic but maybe a subject for another video; do severe crashes with high g-loads effect these driver abilities short and long term. Or on a more general note; how do heavy crashes affect a drivers ability/performance? Cheers!

Good analysis as usual. Parts of it remind me of Keith Codes analysis of motorcycle racing and his hundred dollar bill simile for the total amount of attention you have to spend in any given situation, especially cornering.
How you spend that attention is crucial and going in too hot where all your attention is taken by survival feelings leads to crashing is an example.

Well said Peter. Maybe this is why Hamilton tried a move that was never on. Hamilton missed the apex by a mile yet continued to floor it even though there was only one outcome and that was putting Max into the wall.
On the contrary, you can see that Max braked later than normal at Copse, thus going outside his comfort zone ("dropping the ball while juggling") and ending up in the wall. He should have braked normally (for his style) and if that meant losing the corner, he could pass on the next straight leading up to Stowe.

Having worked with Rob who taught me also from very early on in my career I agree with all the points made regarding manipulating the car thats what he taught me. However can you do an analysis on Lewis, who by contrast is a very late braker...
Now Peter claims Lewis is an early breaker too lol
@@SkyF150 Lewis is a late braker but some corners require earlier than "would feel" natural braking. But overall he is a late braker. Thats his strength.

It's great Peter answers the question early on with obvious thing - general (miss)conception about racing drivers lack depth needed to understand what happens with car under breaking, how it affects corner speed, tire temps and usage and other things and why F1 is based on different subtle aspects of balancing few dozens of factors for a perfect lap.
Can you breakdown Lewis and Max in a video? Comparisons and similarities. The Senna and Prost of our era deserve it!
They’re actually not too dissimilar; both drive on the nose, both can live with loose rear, both are V corner type drivers.
Hamilton is later on the brake.
They are exraordinarrilly similar. Only difference between them is experience. Lewis knows which battles to pick, which helps him quite a bit.
@@Karma2Babylon I think they’re different in some ways. The lines they take for example. Lewis often goes wide into corners etc. which is his own version of Peter’s ‘straightening the corners’. I also think Lewis is legendary with looking after his tyres. Lewis is also a later braker than Max but i’m not as focussed on the technical stuff as Peter so would be good to hear his analysis.

PW has a sharp eye for this sort of thing. His analysis of Michael Schumacher’s technique is one of the most fascinating things I’ve read (I was a regular subscriber to F1Racing mag) about a racing driver. He had this almost impenetrable analysis about something called a “friction circle” to describe how and why Michael was so good on his tyres. Worth a read.
When Alonso and Russell compared their laps at Austria this year, Alonso said his goal for turn 3 was to brake as late a possible every time. George's goal was to get the perfect line through the corner every time.

It's crazy how Max is considered an earlier braker, but still one of the quickest on the grid when doing those reaction tests the drivers are asked to do just for media purposes. Never knew why that combination is why Max is so incredibly quick through sweepers and mid-speed corners.
It also makes me think that being with the RB chasis most of his career, he's simply just adapted his driving style to the car they've given him the past few years. Checo's just getting onboard, and he might start to subtly change his driving style in order to find more speed.
That explain how can he deal with unstable rear while Albon couldn´t.

I think the main racing trait of max is he has a great sense of the forward drive of all the wheels and always delivering the payload of his grip. its another way of saying shortening corners but when one visualizes it in the mind it feels like your cart is always looking far ahead forward. The two paradigms would be cars with more drive and grip than maneuverability and cars with less power (which need to be driven in a way to maintain speed and try to clutch onto as much delta by not slowing down). So cars with high drive should always be given the ability to point where they are going next as fast as possible. so in this paradigm with braking - the quicker you get on the brake and turn the quicker you can turn and the quicker you can point your toes forward again. if you brake later you finish braking later and that delays turning. the sooner you can begin the efficient process of braking the quicker you can move on to the next step. it sounds simple to say it that way but the alien braking point is not gonna be at the latest braking point with cars with this much power. The tyres always want to be processing road in a straight line as often and as much as possible. thats back from his karting days too. its a simple mentality that overrides others when its the right open wheeler.

Getting a good reactions to the lights is 30% of a good start. The rest is the getaway and how well your able to do so. But practising reactions for f1 is mostly to react to the car snapping, oversteer, things happening on track, and to save your car from spinning, ect
Maybe it's for a number of things. I was wondering that maybe it was also to strengthen or keep his peripheral vision active since F1 drivers rely on it so much. They're not looking right ahead of their front wing, they actually look soo far up the track, often times at the next corner before they've even finished completing the corner they're on. Nonetheless, the balls dropping may also help reaction times
@@roberts2231 and propper mapping of the engine. Last year RB had a few bad starting because of the mapping. The fixed it for this year.
valuable insights, but i would proposition that it isn't only about ticking the boxes, but rather the degree of mastery in each skill that makes a champion driver. would be interesting to see you assign some numbers (100 pt scale) to each skill and compare/contrast the legends we've enjoyed throughout the years.
Great insight . Very interesting . I think the very very good drivers know how to extract the most from their car and get results . Lewis ,max ,Lando , Leclerc ,Russell . All of them are superb and we can see that with the current cars and how these drivers get the best out of their car . I just hope that the 2022 cars bring the best drivers to the. top . Would be very interesting.
