    Hey man this is my first time seeing your video and I am here to say that you really did great progress with your cycling journey! 4w/kg is such an amazing goal and I will be cheering you on for it! I would just like to provide an err of caution however that abrupt weight change as a cyclist is never a good thing especially when you are under fueling during your rides as a way to cut carbs. Take it slow and keep nutrition in check, youll definitely get there! Best of luck and have more fun!

      Yes a few people have said before not to go crazy with the weight loss. I’ll definitely be taking it slow and steady for sure! Thanks for the tips!!

      Losing weight fast can definitely work. I'm 6' tall, went from 185lbs to 165lbs in 5 weeks and maintained my power. I ate 2 meals a day. Breakfast to fuel my day, and dinner to fuel my evening workout, protein shake afterwards. Ftp remained at 296 the whole time.

      Best advice!
      I think you shoud go to a nutrition expert. Its the best way to do it properly without underfueling to much

      Hey man! I see we have alot in common :) I also started 2 years ago, 105 kg and 200 Watts back then. 2 years later I'm at 314 Watts with 86 kg. My goal is reaching the 4 W/kg aswell. I'm aware that the biggest progress is behind me so now I'm trying to get there step by step. Don't know if I can ever reach 80 kg because I'm 1m95 and I have a physical job so part of my weight is in my muscles. But I think I got still margins in my power. For this ftp I train 5-7 hours/week. Good luck with your goal. I'll keep following you!

    so recognizable. Got an FTP of 323 but am also 98kilo (used to be 110). So power and fitness is ok, but in races unable to challenge those 65-75 kilo guys. So I have set a 7 months plan to get down to at least 90 kilo with a potential increase of FTP. Keep up the good work, its nice to see others going through the same challenges and efforts

    Great video. I used to ride a lot but had left it alone for over 20 years. No metrics to talk about because they simply weren’t available but I was fit and fast. Now I’m on sort of a similar journey but at 64 and with a back injury, I’m progressing more slowly than you. Its great to see your journey so far and has given me encouragement and motivation. I’m subscribing and looking forward to seeing how you get on. Keep up the good work.

    Just stumbled upon this and I know the struggles you've got right now - I've been riding for 7-9 years now, but being 6'5" the lightest I get is 90kg, but I've managed to climb to 4.2w/kg previously but due to injury, lockdowns and poor diet I'm closer to 2.4w/kg and 115kg. Maybe I need to start documenting my rides and training to keep me honest and motivated to keep things going. Here's to Spring/Summer 2024!

  • @bitchoflivingblah
    @bitchoflivingblah 9 місяців тому

    Haha. I'm in the same boat as you and most of the commenters on this video.
    Strong legs, hovering with an FTP between 280-300 and with about 90-100 kilo baggage.
    Taking it to the next level requires utter commitment. The only way to do this I think is to set a goal commensurate to reach that particular fitness. What got me to this level was a cycling holiday I booked six months in advance which meant every time I almost fell off the wagon (of attaining the required fitness) I knew I would ruin my cycling holiday. In the end it worked and I ended loving every single second of cycling up French Cols in the autumn sunshine.
    Now I'm stuck in that middle ground, and let's not kid ourselves, we all know what it takes to go to the next level, we can see they guys and girls flying past us and know what they've done to achieve this particular level of fitness. There are no hidden secrets except committing to reaching this goal, sacrificing some (but not all things to make the time), disciplining yourself to complete ever session in your plan and eat and sleep to enable you to do this.
    So I personally made that commitment because I want that endorphin rush of climbing some epic mountains (ventoux, tourmalet, alpe d'huez, stelvio, zoncolan, motirolo, angrilu,etc,etc) plus the freedom of zipping along the roads with a smile on my face.
    Every plan is different, mine has to take into account family and work. So I have to shift my workouts into the morning, which was incredibly hard to do - I mean super hard - but once you get used to it, it's not so bad, I had to do this so as not to miss out on time with the kids. The next thing was diet, I make my lunch 4-5 days in advance so there is no excuse to eat the right things, and the weekends I have then have time for longer rides because the family have seen enough of me. The early starts means I get out of the house by 6-7am and am back by 12:00 so I have the rest of the day with the family after a bit of recovery.
    My longer term goals are to enter an endurance race and repeat my previous year's cycling holiday but with bigger climbs.
    Good luck to everyone. This is my story, even if i didn't do the above I'd still be cycling because without it, life is shit.

    I got back into cycling in 2019 after a long break. It’s been great fun. I am getting stronger, now about 2.8w/kg which is ok for this 67 year old. It’s never too late. Well done on your journey 👏. Fabulous effort. If there is any advice to chime in being that i started a year before you (may 2020 with a cheap £250 hybrid bike as well) is to find consistency in your riding.
    When i did my first FTP test it was 175W and now its 280W ( weight is about 72kg).
    The key is not to go off the bike for more than a week. Wieght loss, rhythm, motivation all suffer when riding is not consistent. One ride a week is better than 2 months without a ride...
    Keep it consistent, try your best and keep enjoying your journey

    Good summary of your journey so far.... I'll be watching your progress.
    I've been riding (regularly) since Sept 2020 so a similar-ish timeframe to yourself. still on my old MTB (with seized front forks!) but it's on road slicks and I've changed cassette for higher gearing, chain, replaced both wheels, rear Shimano Acera derailleur, trigger shift, new brake calipers and Kool-Stop dual-compound pads. But next plan is a drop-bar aluminium frame bike with disc brakes in 2024. Maybe a Triban RC120, but it'd be great to afford a Domane like yours. I'll see what 2024 brings.

    This is very relatable (weight etc.). I restarted to cycle August last year and slowly ramped up my distances. Since I did not want to get an uncomfortable road bike (bad experiences with a roadbike) I got myselt an ebike. It has a powermeter inside which is very useful. After the first months and saddle, bike fit adjustments my cadence went up by 10 and my overall power started to go up a lot. I did a very hilly route and my estimated ftp is 280 (ebike was off). I'll get myself a gravelbike and a powermeter soon and I'd love to have an indoor trainer to be a bit more consistent. Let's see.
    Video is very inspiring and I also need to focus on losing weight. Doesn't matter that I can produce 900 watts sitting when I am too heavy

    Well done, that’s a fantastic improvement! However don’t get too hung up on watts per kg unless you’re doing a lot of climbing, because when you’re on the flat it’s absolute watts that matter most. I’m currently just over 3w/kg, but I’m a very small bloke weighing 57kg. I’m ok up the hills, but on the flat I will still get absolutely thrashed by the “fat lad at the back” because he’s churning out twice the power for a similar amount of wind resistance. Aero drag is a bitch when you’re a smaller rider!

    • @JMower
      @JMower  9 місяців тому

      Very true! There's quite a few hills around here so w/kg is the main thing for me. I don't usually ride with other people but when I do I find it quite easy to stick with them on the flat, but on the hills they'll just leave me for dust!
      I'm hoping all the hill climbing will help me overall, I definitely need to lose a few more kg so if I can do that without losing the power then I'll be happy!

    recognise a lot of that, including the cheapo riverside, which is my favourite bike, and much preferable to my dedicated and more expensive road bike, if you look at calorie consumption, off road is noticeably higher than on road, and my clear impression is that off-road is far more like a HIIT workout than on road, as it tends to be constant acceleration and deceleration rather than cruising at a fairly uniform speed
    having said all that, the 'power' score is clearly an attempt to mirror VO2 max, and after being a keen cyclist for 45 years i was horrified to learn how low my VO2 max was (average) when i first measured (estimated) it with a running watch, i've now sorted that and have a very good score for my age and sex, i now build my cycling schedule around my running schedule

    Good luck with the 4W/Kg challenge. That's what I was aiming for until life got in the way.
    At 55 I managed 287W FTP, by doing a 302W 20min FTP test. It's as near to death as I've ever been I think, but I paced it perfectly.
    I use Ramp tests now and they don't hurt as much. I'm 61 now and targetting 3W/kg in 12 months from now. We'll see. It's a long road back.

      I think you mean his body composition has improved. And by looking at the older clips he's included, it definitely has.
      BMI is an overly simplistic metric, it's basically weight/height (specifically kg/ height in meters squared).
      So, if your weight is pretty constant the only way your BMI could improve is if you got taller.

I lost the 7 Kg's in near 7 weeks but then I stayed pretty much the same weight for the next eight weeks despite eating the same and doing the same amount of exercise! Great progress, it's not that simple as to lose weight and increase power as your weight contributes to your power as you have more weight on the pedal stroke. A more realistic goal would be to improve your w/kg and try and keep current power levels and reduce weight by reducing body fat. As you lose weight and cycle outside your find your using less power to get around as its much easier to maintain speed at your new lower weight so your have to correct that with indoor sessions your also burn less calories at your lower weight so keep all apps upto date with your current weight . I recently came down from 100 to 88kg with a slight increase in ftp but was doing between 9-11000 tss points per week over around 5 months . Good luck with your journey.

  • @halaircyclinggains1300
    @halaircyclinggains1300 11 місяців тому

    It is quite a journey isnt it? Quite similar story, I was also 120kg back (186cm in height) in winter 2020/21 and decided that was enough - so adapted my food habits and started with gentle excersize like general increase in physical activity coupled with light jogging/brisk walking. Jogging made my hips hurt a little after a while so I pulled down my bike from the garage wall...and loved being out on the road ever since :D (Indoor trainer for those dark/cold months here in the Northern Hemisphere)
    I am also dreaming of a FTP of 4w/kg and I have been very close (3,8)...but since then have started strength work in the gym and seem to have gained more lean mass than my raw FTP power on the bike can cover for, so net w/kg is down. But that is quite alright as I have not been very structured in my training, my time on the bike is primarely for my own enjoyment/health improvement. Despite "no" improvement in my power to weight ratio, I have never been faster on the bike than I am now :)
    My main "structure" have been to stay consistent aka a little "every day", and finding the balance between hard rides vs proper recovery rides so I could keep enjoying them.
    But I have not trained structured for the elusive 4w/kg target yet, maybe something to aspire for this winter and see if 2024 can be the year? Would be nice as I am turning 50 aswell!
    Happy 4w/kg hunting, I might join you! :D And your physical transformation have been formidable - respect!

      @@JMower Thanks. I would also add that getting to that weight requires massive dedication in eating habits. I cut out carbs completely from Monday to Friday, while sticking to standard, but still healthy foods at the weekend e.g. brown rice. Are you prepared to give up beer, cake, chocolate to meet this goal? I did, but it didn't make me very happy. When you go out for dinner with friends you worry about how it will affect your commitment. I think you may reach a point where losing any further weight requires extreme sacrifices. It would probably be easier to gain more power than lose more weight. You're young , getting FTP to 350W would be very achievable for you as your body will be able to recover from intensive training much quicker than someone of my age (49yrs). 350W / 87.5kg = 4W/Kg, rather than 320W / 80kg. Good luck in whichever route you take though.

But after few months of training, I realized that zone 2 bores me so much that I lose the joy of cycling/running. What I enjoy much more are intense shorter runs/ridesand ocasional long ones. So I'm wondering if you spent a lot of time training/riding in zone 2 during those two years? OR did you train as you liked (zwift matches, etc...).
