Roguebook is sadly so underrated. It's a great game. Yes, it's heart is transplanted from Slay the Spire but there is enough innovation there to keep it interesting. It also looks gorgeous. Too bad almost no one is speaking about the game.
I like it, think the art is great. I'm not keen on the parts in-between combat but thought combats were really good with great enemies. I found there was just too few opportunities to sculpt your deck. I love Pirate Outlaws and Slay The Spire because of it's frequent opportunities to add and remove cards and really sculpt those synergies
Thanks for the great overview, helped a lot with choosing my next card battler - just bought beneath Oresa. I would really LOVE to hear your take on Wildfrost, which at the moment is my favorite in the genre. It was a bit unfairly maligned when it first released, but it has so many great and unique aspects.
Seconding Wildfrost, it was stupidly hard and unfair when it first came out but the updates they have made since release completely redeems it for me, and it's one of my favourite deck builders (although to be honest I did actually sink about 10 hours even before they released any updates, so I agree with your assessment about unfairly maligned). It's also really fresh with the mechanics, which give it a very distinct feel that I think a lot of the StS inspired games sometimes lack. @@DanBottiglieri I agree with your comment and the original one. The game was way too hard for me at first, so much that I stopped playing for several months. I came back when I saw it was available for Android and have been hooked ever since. I love the way they brought new gameplay elements and how everything is so polished and well thought out. I am more of and RPG fan, and old school RPGs, and I have not played many of these. I have dabbled in slay the spire, but never got too in to it. I did quite enjoy the Thea games though they are more grand strategy card games, and are more about playing the cards in the right order, than using them to attack. I'd also like one with enough depth to keep me going for a long time, with either story, mechanics or something with an easy to learn but hard to master feel. And Griftlands may be good but not a great representation of the genre...which may make it better for a player not invested in the genre. Also lets take a moment to thank youtube for not telling me you posted this a month ago, despite me have the notifications active...luckily today's video referenced this one, so I went back. :)
Well I would say Griftlands or Black Book are both excellent choices or an RPG fan. First they are not very difficult. Second they are very story driven. And third... Griftland has more player agency than many RPGs, not only does it have three different stories, but also your decisions can land you on multiple different endings. You even get stills at the end Fallout-style that tell you what became of the world, the characters and the MC as a product of your decisions. I say you can't go wrong with those.
I would love to bring some attention to Thea series. I like the original (Thea: the Awakening), but a lot of people prefer the sequel. It is a mix of mild 4X strategy and cardplay, with a ton of Slavish lore, and moreover it is one of the few card games that works as a slow burn, long, strategy style campaign map rather than the super limited uber popular FTL style encounter map. The cardplay is not the strongest part, but the game more than makes up for it with its unique blend of genres and breathtaking amount of lore and encounter variety you will have in the game.
That one falls into the same category as Mahokenshi and Gloomhaven (ish). And those types of games were not considered for the list. But maybe there will be list for those in the future, here on the channel.
My problem with Slay the Spire and similar games is that I cannot build the decks I want to. After I am done experimenting, I like playing around with different concepts. But more than 90% of the time I do not manage to make the deck I want in StS. That is why I like Tainted Grail, because there I can actually build the decks I want to play with, instead of pray for random chance to give me the handful of cards I actually need.
The thing is that you are trying to build the deck you want. That's not the way to go in these games. For example if you play the Ironclad... there are three or four overarching strategies and you have to go for the one that you get the cards for. These games are about dynamically building your strategy with what you're given. But there are several games on this list that give you full control over your deck: Vault of the Void (this one is the best for this) Black Book Marvel Midnight Suns (not exactly a Card battler but in the neighborhood) Ash of Gods -The Way (not exactly a Card battler but in the neighborhood) Maybe give those a shot, especially Vault of the Void.
@@sginrummy88 I will stress on saying "When I am done experimenting" which means that when I am done trying all different things in the game, I want to play some specific deck and try out different tactics with it, but the game does not facilitate it in absolutely any way. As an example, I completed Slay the Spire with all of the classes with a few different strategies on each. Then I wanted to play a deck with poisons. I need about 5 cards to make the deck work. I had three different runs, each lasting over an hour and I did not get the 5 goddamn cards even once. I wasted 3 hours playing a game where I had 0 control over getting 5 specific cards, so I can try out a deck I like, after I was done playing with "whatever the game throws at me". This is why I do not like such systems. They waste a ton of time, without absolutely any chance to actually try out fun things I have found work for me.
I just made it for the video. Would need to re-do-it. But I'll do it soon. Maybe I'll seize the opportunity to add two games that forgot I even played!
The scariest thing about Voice of Cards is that there's THREE of them. I'm normally a fan of Yoko Taro's games but these don't even have a crazy story to make up for the terrible gameplay. I played the first one and from watching this it's clear they changed nothing, they even reuse the enemy and NPC sprites.
It was an eye-sight problem. I watched the video "full screen" later on (you see it through a tinier window when you are editing) and realized that I had left some clams uncensored. I thought they had bikinis or something. So yes... I guess I censored bewbs but showed the clams... very only fans of me, I know. Looks like yt doesn't mind as they've not taken down the video, I hope they don't find out XD.
Before I bought the game I did I always do: I filtered by negative comments to see the type of gripes that people were having. When I saw that 90% percent of them were: A) Game's is too difficult B) Is unbalanced C) It has nothing other than combat. I immediately knew that the game was not for these people (or these people weren't the right audience for the game, however you want to put it) but it was probably going to be for me. Then I played the game and it turned out I was totally right, because the game's a blast to play. The remaining 10% of negative reviews stated that it was lacking some tooltips and info. Those were partially right.
I recommend you try Touhou lost branch of legend. Even if you don't know anything about Touhou, the gameplay is fantastic. It is still in early access but there is so many content

Looks like yt doesn't mind as they've not taken down the video, I hope they don't find out XD.
@@YeOldEntertainment Haha I did think it would be something like that, especially as the l3wdz mainly came from the right hand side of the screen.
interesting that you put Beneath Oresa so high as a lot of people don't like that one. I'll wishlist and check it at some point
Before I bought the game I did I always do: I filtered by negative comments to see the type of gripes that people were having. When I saw that 90% percent of them were:
A) Game's is too difficult
B) Is unbalanced
C) It has nothing other than combat.
It's worth a play just for production alone.
I did find it to have some balance issues. Some characters are far easier to win with than others.
I recommend you try Touhou lost branch of legend. Even if you don't know anything about Touhou, the gameplay is fantastic. It is still in early access but there is so many content
May be take a look at Banners of Ruin too.
Some suggestions: Banners of Ruin, Library of Ruina, Ratropolis
Why no Thronebreaker in this list? You didn't play it or not enough card battler?
Like I said, I left out Gwent in any of its presentations because TCGs are their own thing. Of course I've played it! many times over. It's on my video: Top 10 games from the 2010s.
I don't like this genre very much, but I sure do like Ye Olde Entertainment videos.
Thanks. There are a couple of RPG itch-scratching titles there (Black Book, Griftlands)
Sad. My boi Dawncaster is not here
Where's Banners of Ruin? I've spent too many hours on that game to not have it included in this tier list haha
I was trying to remember the name of that. It's pretty good.
I think I am mostly going with the 'story-tier' (FILTHY CASUAL)
Hehe. There are some pretty good options in that sub-category!
im surprised theres no wildfrost on here
soon
You should give Library of Ruina a try.
Its an amazing deck builder game with a great art, story and music.
I've seen it recommended many times, but there are a few things that are HUGE red flags. It looks like it's going to be heavily anime-influenced and I've had terrible experiences with that.
@@YeOldEntertainment It is quite literally the best piece of story-driven narrative you'll ever experience.
Its slay the spire then everything else
I've got a few of these. Death Roads is cool enough. I think you missed Fights in Tight Spaces.
That is the one I mentioned to some another commenter. That one and Necroking. But the video was already almost finished by the time I realized.
@@YeOldEntertainment Right on. Fights is my personal favorite.
Check out library of ruina, i luv it, and i luv angela.
Not sure if it counts as a card battler but crono ark is very fun.
Steam always recommends that one to me. But the visuals are serious red flags.
getting Rogue Femme right away
XD
Tier list + Ye Old + Card battler, doesn't get any better! (Unless he does Crpg)
Now it shows!
Oh oh! that game looks problematic! The one in 1:12:47
It can be good for something.
Nice!
Enjoy!
Anyone of this os available @ android? Ty!! I know slay the spire is there
I know Vault of the Void is available for Android. There's also an Android exclusive called Dawncaster.
Vault of the Void looks like it basically ripped off Hearthstone’s UI.
Haven't played it.
Ufo 50 party house
Rogue Femme in the "Bad" tier!
UNSUBSCRIBED!
The p*rn is strong in this one.
For Deliverance and Reign, the Deliverance part is a complete and total ripoff from Fate Hunters (to the name and text of cards). Ugly for sure.
Dang it. Why are games from those latitudes so often complete ripoffs of other games?
@@YeOldEntertainment yep, that's rotten. And Fate Hunters is not very known (sadly) so they can get away with it. But Monster Train...
Aren't those two made by the same developers?
@@gabrielmnt4119 Not according to Steam
@@Hybban yeah I checked, but I swear I read something about this somewhere, I don't remember though. But yeah basically the 2 games are identical, I played them both.
The game with Fatso in it doesn’t deserve meh tier. Where’s the body positivity?
I fully endorse Jabba The Hutt for the upcoming miss universe!
3:43 thats me,i dont give a shi about stories, those are boring,i like games whose main focus is the actual gameplay itself, not the meaningless boring stories
That's why I made the distinction. Some other people like there to be a story. Some other people are o.k. with either type of CB.
