Chris Pin this comment! Just for you and everyone reading this...I don't care if we win 5.0 gold or a pro match you will be "3.5 Forever" which is the highest level attainable in PUPR (PickleballWill's Universal Pickleball Rating)
After seeing this video I realized two things: 1. The “3.5 at best” is not a joke (I thought it was). It’s really true….at least for Chris 😄 2. Vatic Prism Flash beats DBD and whatever Will was using 😊…and a lot cheaper too!
So nice of Will to come down a level and help out his 3.5 buddy medal in a 4.5 tournament. 🤣 No but seriously, love watching actual tournament footage from you guys and I hope for more posts like this in the future. Congratulations Chris and Will!!!
Would love to see a Briones breakdown on this match. Would be interesting to hear his insights since ya'll have had tutorials from him. Definitely would love to see more from you guys!
Both teams showed great teamwork. Supported each other throughout the match. Other team was just a bit more consistent with their resets and speedups. Nice playing guys!
@@PickleballWill Haha I know right - so unfortunate that it was technically "not good enough" 🤣. It really did look like you became a character in Mario Tennis and that was your character's special shot or something 🎮...it was surreal looking. If you count style points it was a walk off winner. 🥾🥾
The best advice I can give after watching this is, just because you can speed up a ball doesn't mean you should. You're better off trying to force your opponent to error than you are hitting a winner. Great game boys.
Same comment here. Will n Chris would have played better with their soft game. Their skill level was defintely at 3.0-3.259 😂😂😂 Lots of practice required to level up but attainable. All the best!
The old guys held together pretty good. It became apparent the young guys had played together a lot. Over all it looked like a lotta fun which is what PickleBall is allll about, right?
Idk what’s worse, Chris’s hand speed or Chris switching up the stack as if he was cooking with the strategy 😂. All seriousness though, thanks for posting. It’s awesome seeing the podcast legends play!
Good effort, guys! A couple of points, though: (1) In tournaments you must identify a weakness in your opponents game and relentlessly exploit it. For example, Jamon and AJ were comfortable with your dinks and drop shots, but had problems with handling drives. You should have used this play (4:43) over and over again. Maybe you had some kind of strategy for this match, but I did not see it. (2) Chris must improve his put away shots - too much arm, not enough wrist. You won this point (26:38), but it should have been over after the 3rd shot, or 5th shot, or 7th shot 😀 Look forward to see you guys at one of the tournaments!
Fun to see you guys play! You may have to officially burn the 3.5 at best shirts. Most 3.5 at best peeps don't make it to a 4.5 gold medal match. Unless we're considering will a 5.5 player, then your math still works... lol
A fun video would be you and Will (maybe part of the podcast) is watching this match and going through thought process/strategy, what you guys could have done better, etc.
building on the comment regarding Jordan doing a break down, it would also be interesting to hear Chris and Will's strategies and tactics heading into the match and how they changed during the games. Especially since they have played this team before.
For the double black do you run any lead tape? I've been playing for a little over a month and am thinking about getting the double black for control but I each players preference and playstyle go into where and how much lead tape go into their paddle.
Yeah I was mixed about the PF16 until I got it dialed in with lead tape. Paddle came in stock at 7.8 oz, with lead tape and over grip now plays at 8.42 oz. More stable, added control and a touch more spin. Bought it as a back up to my Joola, now it's my go to paddle.
Fun to watch! I think the difference was the other team made fewer errors than you guys in this match. Could go a different way next time around. Saw your comment about the copyright claim. I think that even if it’s a valid claim, and I’m. It sure that it is, it is ridiculous that they would make it! It’s a video YOU made of YOUR team which YOU edited and placed on YOUR channel. The fact that company logos are displayed and can be seen in the background does not give them a copyright to your match!
I can’t imagine how long of a day that was in triple digits! I think there should’ve been a best of 5 match, they were fresh and I assume y’all had been sitting for over an hour
This looked like one of those games where the better team just beat themselves. Not knocking Jamon and AJ, it just seemed like Chris and Will were barely missing stuff they'd typically easily make, as well as just hitting those weird outlier mishits way too often - probably a result of fatigue and/or nerves. The winning team was rock solid and steady but didn't outshine you from a mechanics or court IQ standpoint.
I watched the great match on the far side. Just kidding! Great match. Nice integrity on both sides. All joking aside - I’m a 3.5 at best and could easily hang with you guys. 😂
I thought you guys had it figured out that putting Chris on the left was the way to go. You had it figured out in the first game but stopped doing it then figured it out again in the 3rd to 15 near the end. Should've kept it going.
I'm sure fatigue contributed to a lot of the mistakes, would like to see some of the games where you guys dominated! tbh, Chris seemed like a more solid player this match...Will was like a rollercoaster of highs and lows haha but congrats guys and good luck at nationals!
Great video. I enjoyed seeing you in action. Your discussions with Will seem to indicate that sandbagging while prevalent is somehow a victimless act. Real 3.0s and 3.5s have no where to play tournaments if 4.0+s are playing down. Most 3.5 matches on youtube that I have been able to look up seem to all have 4.0 even 4.5+ DUPR rated players playing in them. I would love it if when you mention tournaments you also say if that tournament reports to DUPR and requires players to play in the correct division for their DUPR as well as their age.
Blocking defense on Will' backhand kept on getting into the net. Both needs to work on their defense to keep the ball in play. Add two handed blockings in their arsenal consistently...it seems like off and on.
Fun to watch (even if the outcome wasn’t what we wanted), but it’d be much more entertaining if you had some sort of commentary playing over it (either serious, funny or some combination).
I love you guys, you're tremendous ambassadors of the game and...well, I'm going to try to be constructive. What I saw...You guys played very good defense but so did they and you were on defense more often. PB Will - your backhand volley can be lethal but I was surprised at how many dink-type shots you put in the net. Chris - I think you should take the time to command even a slightly more powerful paddle. On multiple occasions you had put away opportunities where your shots just lacked enough power to end the point (not a huge difference in power would be required). They won more hand battles and I saw that you were elevating the ball more often than bringing those battle strikes lower- that's not the DBD doing that. You guys hit way too many drives in the net. Footwork? Swinging too hard? Heavy topspin droppy shots with some pace can often be more effective especially when your hit zone opponent is racing toward the kitchen line. I know the DBD is all the rage but it's too tame for me and now I can see why it should stay at home. Have you tried the Black Diamond Pro for a week? I put some lower lead on the PB Apes Pro Energy S and the DBD will never be in my bag again.
May I suggest the 3 on 3 PB league for 45 and older. You find a 3rd partner and I get you three fake ID's. And were talking more trophies then Ben Johns and Anna Lee combined. See you in Bloomington for more battles and belly laughs.
You mention your opponents are playing with Vatic PRISM Flashes... is that correct?? That is Vatics lowest tier paddle, which isn't what I would expect at this level. If it IS correct, I might need to reconsider a more control oriented paddle to get to the next level!
I’m surprised you and Will kept hitting yo the kid with white shoes. The kid with red shoes was struggling to get the ball over the net. You guys should have won gold.
