Now we know the reason why they were so uncomfortable! The battery in one of the pedals Tosin was using had died, he was supposed to start when the conductor turned and looked at him but he couldn't. As this interview explains ua-cam.com/video/OjMSUyAaaD4/v-deo.html

@@trogdorman121 nah dude look at how he hits the cymbals and compare to any live performance where it's just the three of them. He likes to absolutely whack those cymbals. In this performance he doesn't want to drown the whole orchestra with his massive crashes which is why he's playing, without a shade of a doubt, softer on the cymbals than he would usually do without an orchestra.

I've had music performed by orchestras and they always make us sign a waver committing to no public display of the recordings. I'd imagine it was exactly the same for AAL. I was mentioning to Harry and the band that they should do an orchestral album together. I can't imagine the sort of money they'd have to raise for that though. An expensive endeavour to be sure.

That little bit if 630hz feedback at about 5:42 is indicative of how hard the FOH guy was pushing all if those mics on the string section up to match the stage volume of the band, or maybe he thought he had a good band mix and then tried to match that with all of those wide open mics. I speak from experience, and unless there is very deliberate and coordinated effort put into getting the band down to a reasonable level AND having the conductor and/or the orchestra at least attempt to match the RELATIVE volume of the band, then it will be a disaster. For example, if the band is just plain loud on stage, even with the drum shield, the conductor needs to strike the term mezzo piano from the charts. Mezzo forte would be the quietest they could play. Bottom line is that if the band had been up there with their regular cabinets and no drum shield, the band sounds would still be louder going into, say, first violin microphone than the first violin is going into its own microphone. I’ve cued this up in my headphones during soundcheck for any given mic on an orchestra instrument, or even area miking, cue up that microphone and you’ll hear cymbals as much as the clarinet or any woodwind into those mics, cello mics are getting whatever is closer if not everything, and so on. If they are clip on mics, that helps, but still, cue up one and listen to how much Marshall half stack is getting into that violin mic, and you realize you have a daunting uphill battle, because the reality is that as you turn up those orchestra mics, you are effectively turning up the band sounds second hand, even from ten or fifteen feet away. If you can get the band to play at a more reasonable level not so completely out of context with the matter at hand, then you have a fighting chance. I used to mix this end of season/ beginning of summer show with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and a “Motown style” band from Kentucky. All of them top notch musicians. We had so much fun the first time that they requested my mix every time after, but it wasn’t easy. I had to use a ton of judgement to get their wedge mixes down a bit, and the orchestra to play a bit louder, through the conductor of course, with whom I had a trusting relationship. I had a stripped down orchestra, maybe 4 first violins, 4 seconds, 2 violas, 2 cellos, 1 double bass, 1 trap that was mostly for percussion, and singles in the woodwinds and horns section, but alto and tenor sax, and two trumpets, With a regular full band in front of all of that. 6 piece kit, electric bass, guitar, two keyboardists, one with three keyboards, one with two, all symmetrical, and potentially 10 singers at any one time, but rarely. Basically five male, five female, and one “lead” vocal mic, which I suggested they never use as I would have each individual mic tailored to each of the ten singers. One pair of wedges on a mix dsc for whoever was singing lead, a d four flanking that on one mix for all of the backup singers, explaining that making those more than one mix was inviting a volume competition which we didn’t need. Five mixes for the band proper, and a couple of “side fill” wedges on stands offstage flanking the orchestra with just a bit of the whole band, mostly vocals to fill in for the orchestra. We did soundcheck and they were so pumped that it was so quick and so good and a great show was had by all, for about 5 years. Point is, every time you see an orchestra playing with a rock band, that is a challenge for everybody involved, and a little feedback just shows that the FOH guy was pushing to make a good mix, and cheers to him, fir not staying too safe and having the orchestra seem like an afterthought. Nice work. Now, the band. I don’t get it. They’re shredders. So what?! Write some music. I’ve heard what they call songs, but to me it seems like excuses to go off and show off chops. Nice. Still not Jerry Cantrell or Kurt Cobain or Joe Duplantier. Fancy stuff. I also mix the local jazz orchestra. Now that’s real chops, real fancy stuff, Badasses of world class caliber. The band name Animals as Leaders seemed like it might be ultra progressive like Gojira. I was wrong. It’s just calculated shredding, then loose, then repeat, rinse. Is that what they call math metal? I don’t like Meshuggaah either. Carcass is one of the all time greatest though of just music, besides being pioneers of metal, they are masters of harmonic richness, melodic beauty, and brutal rhythmic attacks. Like Queen, only faster and heavier, but similar tongue-in-cheek sense of humor but often deadly fucking serious. “Heffers and steers are all there for you to choose, fiscal sexuality for we are all whores and prostitutes. Life’s a celebration at the cattle market, life’s a cabaret, where your dancing partner is............dead..........is dead. The frigid and recycling death disco”. Nailed it. Our nightlife meat markets are no different than the livestock marketplace, replete with the slaughterhouse blues.
