I rarely, if ever, comment on UA-cam videos, but for some reason I find myself doing so now. I’ve watched your videos for a couple of years and enjoy watching how you are building your lives there. This video is no exception. It seems so very responsible to me that you are willing to share some of the downside challenges with your viewers. I’m not a homesteader, just a home gardener, but still enjoy watching most of what you post. I so appreciate that you are responsible with your raising of animals for food. The large food industry is upsetting to me and I think you set a great example of what raising animals for food should look like. Making choices such as these recent ones (new quail lineage, cease pig breeding etc) are the decisions that will give YOU sustainability in your endeavors. Kudos to you both for having the foresight to make difficult choices! Sorry this got long!

I remember a video you did a while back about needing to find the joy again in your lifestyle, that it wasn’t how you wanted when you started this way of life. I started watching your channel back in Arizona, and to see the dedication and love you have for homesteading is with out question! To be self sufficient has to be the goal and helping others in your community. I feel for Kevin because he really loves the pigs but he is also wise when it comes to family and sustainability . I love you guys and believe in you. God has continued to guide you and the blessings are evident from Him, so continue following Him and God Bless!

Humility, honesty, excellence, and reality in quality home farming as always. I rarely comment on your videos, other than to say thank you. No one knows it all, I'm here as a home farmer to learn from your successes and failures, as I do from my own.
Sometimes a change is as good as a rest, genetically among your livestock as much as how you are doing things. We're on a 'quail break' just now as it was needed to suit our personal lives. Are we done with quail forever? Probably not. We're also on a 'pig break' just now too! Again, is it forever, very unlikely. Do what's right for you and keep on producing phenomenal real, honest home scale content and food for your family... and thank you!

Last year was my 1st year with quail. Had similar issues. I was careful to remove trouble makers right away. In fact I removed all of the white one right away. I have close to the same cages.I eventually down sized to 2 sets of breeders. Only keep the chickens in pens till they feather out 35. Had outdoor 12x16’ wire bottom cage dirt shaving s . Made cubby holes wood boxes , pallets , tubs for tons of hiding places. Cover with Leland cypress branches.I did about 2 sets. & decided October. To cull everything. I also am starting over . Congrads on the baby. Missed your videos.💕💕nj

I agree with many here… don’t apologize for the way you do things. I love you all how open you are about how and why you both converse over your beautiful farm. Difficult decisions for how and what is done to give them the best quality of life in a working farm. And then turn around and share it with us! You don’t have to but you do. I am sure there are other homesteads that appreciate your honesty and integrity and can look at themselves and say , “we have similar issues, let’s see if that will help us?!?” Or for some just starting to wonder what it will take to have a homestead. As well as for me… it reminds me of growing up on what my parents called a hobby farm. 1.25 acre’s of a small orchard of 16 or so apple a Italian plum and couple of pear trees, 5-10’ raspberry, 1-10’ loganberry/boysenberry, 2-10’ strawberry’s, a plethora of basic vegetables 🥕🥦🌽🥬🍉🥒🍅🥔🧅, meat chickens sometimes twice a season. A meat steer when one was 2/3 grown we would get another and share with family costs of butcher etc. we tried pigs 🐖 but didn’t like the smell or noise lol, they had tried rabbits 🐇 but my dad didn’t like the dispatch or prep or meat. So a hard no. Oh and regular chicken stock for eggs! I heard some of the conversations over the years. Similar and different than your own. Thanks for the memories and for sharing. I for one am blessed

I really think having them in outdoor runs or tractors is the best way to raise them. They do actually look happy out on the ground and in the grasses and small brush. I have mine out in a 10'x8' run and 2 hutches, but only 2' tall. I only ever have aggression when I put them in smaller areas like when I'm waiting for the young ones to feather out before bringing outside and also my overwinter setup needs work.
There are some really good full size (fully enclosed by wire) tractors for them I've seen on youtube, I can't remember the name of it though. But they were 6ft tall, about 4'x6' and had a built in box on the bottom (flap on front so it doubles as a shelter from rain) where the people ushers them into and closes it before moving the tractor. The feeder and waterers are built in so it all moves along on the pop up wheels that help it move.
I'll try and see if I can find the video to show.
Obviously though, you do you, it was just a suggestion. More space seems to make happier birds from my experience.

Have you considered asking your co-op if they need a place to dump their silos, as they clean them out? Often times the dregs are mixed grains, & are reduced cost, or free. You’re doing them a favor, if you can stand the smell of fermented grain for the pigs? Just an idea on better feed for pigs.

I had this problem too. I culled ALL of the ones who could not get along. After a few months I only had ones that got along. The following generations were not aggressive either. Also check your protein content in your feed and make sure it is at least 18%. I also discovered when I accidentally got into a feed with less than that and it caused them to be aggressive and to want to cannibalize each other.

We are a registered Idaho Pasture Pig breeder in central Nebraska. We have a breeding trio. We have been doing that for several years. Just this morning we were talking about should we continue with it. Feeder pigs are so easy compared to year round breeding pigs. We have a variety of animals. The breeding pigs have great personalities , the meat is amazing. The best pork we have ever tasted, but they are the most work of any of our animals. So I understand why you made the choice you did. One thing you might have the vet check on Babe is selenium level. When Homesteady had issues with getting their cows pregnant, it was a low selenium level. Most of the US is low in selenium in the soils, and they may not be going to the mineral blocks as much as they should. Totally understand about making changes at the farm. All farms should undergo regular reflection on goals of the farm and how you are meeting them. If one aspect of the farm is causing undue worry and stress, you have to evaluate that and decide if the stress is worth it.

I want to say that I very much admire your honesty and how generous you are with your knowledge and experiences. I also want to confess that I'm as far from being a homesteader as is possible to be. I would be fine with the growing of things, but the processing just could never happen with me. Mind you, I'm not saying processing is wrong, I'm just saying that I wasn't raised in the lifestyle and my personality is such that within 5 seconds exposure to a creature (any creature, including snakes, frogs, lizards, fish, etc..), I want to cuddle it and maybe even kiss its cheek. I know processing must happen, I just couldn't do it. ANYWAY, the reason I'm commenting is that not being a homesteader I think I can say with conviction that at base, what you talk about is really good solid information for all of us, even people like me. Maybe not exactly which breed of chicken to raise or how to stop breeding pigs but rather to keep ourselves aware of what's working in our life and what is not and then be willing to change, be willing to eliminate whatever is dragging us down, be willing to try something new and give it a chance to succeed. Your willingness to talk about the downs as well as the ups, your willingness to describe your approach to this process is sort of a blueprint that worked for you and it just might work for me too, your suggestions are just that, suggestions and I appreciate them. I've never heard either of you say that everyone should do exactly as you do, you both just talk about what you're doing, what works for you on your homestead in your area, what doesn't. Thank you so much for your videos (and the recipes)!

No need to apologize. Things change all of the time on a homestead. Things that once worked out don't always , and you just go a different direction. Quail can definitely be tricky to raise for sure. Remember always, it's your homestead and you do what works for you.

Well thanks for the vid, I would love to have quail one day, didn't know they can be aggressive one another, but I guess this happens in chicken too , there alway one chicken that get pick one. Question: Do you need a male quail for the lady's to lay eggs, if you just want them for the eggs

No one should judge you based on your choice of how you farm! You just like everyone else need s to farm in a way that works for the individual. Do what works for you! You’re farming for you not for you tube!

Have you ever thought about checking with grocery stores and restaurants, in your area, to collect their extra food, they would normally throw away, to feed to your pigs?

I appreciate your goal to respect the livestock on your farm. Yes, they're livestock, not pets. But you are honoring their literal sacrifice by treating them humanely.

It's probably very important and fairly normal to have to start over when raising quail. Creating a new relationship with a different quail supplier is also a good thing. No need to apologize for being honest about the struggle of raising animals.

Your homestead, your decisions. Who are we to tell you how to run your homestead? Folks need to relax and stop battering homesteaders. We can offer suggestions to a problem but that is it. We enjoy watching your videos so keep up the great work!!

Hi guys! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on how to manage and make decisions about your homestead. I was wondering about the quail situation. I know that with dove which lived with me for 25 year and by the time Petey passed away he was 28 years old. When his mate passed away 5 years earlier (Petey literally mourned for 3 days). I couldn't get him a new mate because Doves are a one mate only for life. I knew that if I were to try a new mate for him for company he would have killer her. I am wondering if the same principle can apply to quail. They are in a different family.but could they have the same social construct? Just wondering.

Just wondering if you already placed your order for the items you wanted to add to your orchard. I can't recall what they were, but I had suggested ordering asap because of everything happening in our world. I would even suggest you ask for them to be sent asap and tell them you have a greenhouse. I just have a "feeling" about this... that time is of the essence. I wish I had more property for food preps. I pray for God's guidance for you and everyone else.

Thank you for your humbleness and due diligence in caring for your homestead and all that it entails. No apology is needed! All of us should be as mindful in evaluating situations and determining what's best for our homes, land, and animals. A good steward doesn't make decisions lightly! I know from experience that you most likely thought through your decisions thoroughly and with guidance from the Spirit. God bless you both in Jesus' Name!
