The Wright 2800 was used in thunderbolts, cosairs, hellcats and a host of other aircraft...i don't recall them using that kind of starting .especially with the engines so far off the ground...probably Hollywood theatrics. Thanks for posting
It’s called a Shotgun start, and I don’t think it was the ONLY way to start them. But those shells would ignite and that would sort of “kickstart” it, and the Engine would just take over from there, and it was around the Era of WWII. There’s a video of a wildcat getting a shotgun start, so to my knowledge it is accurate, another pilot who was “reviewing” this scene and talked about how it worked, interesting stuff actually

The Fairchild C-119 "Flying Boxcar," as seen in the remake of the "Flight of the Phoenix," used either Pratt & Whitney R-4360 or Wright R-3350 engines. Fairchild built C-119s used the P&W engines and Kaiser built C-119s used the Wright engines. The Fairchild C-82 Packet, as seen in the original "Flight of the Phoenix," used Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engines.
One of the coolest looking ‘planes built
