Yeah the engelmann sounds like the ultimate all rounder. The red is certainly awesome if you need that intensity to stand out in a crowd. Both beautiful instruments.
the five tone bar has more dimension but both are relatively dead compared to Dave Harvey's Gibsons and why not support American luthiers with decades of experience compared to Asians who are incredibly underpaid? Sorry, but Marshall is all puffery and nothing he says doesn't better apply to Gibson's current instruments. So why not save up a little extra money and buy the instrument that Northfield and the rest of the boutiquers are trying to replicate? I don't get it. Sorry, but they sound tinny.
Quality is about effort, materials, craftsmanship, and design, and sound. Not geography. The Gibsons have lost their appeal. Ill use my ears and fingers to inform my choice of mandolin. I have always hated the sentiment that you have to have the “real” thing in order to be validated as a musician. Its great marketing but bad for musicians and bad for music. Mike has just about as much street cred as anyone can. His endorsement of Northfield doesnt go unnoticed. Gibson can go the way of Harley Davidson, golf, clothing irons , and paper napkins. Let the mellinials kill them off slowly, dying with the boomers.
Wow, that Engelmann 5-bar really pushes my buttons.
Definitely a good way. :)
Thank you Mike Marshall and Northfield. Going shopping

So this Engelmann 5-bar Instrument sounds a dream to me!
What is the smnall black thing he has over the bass strings behind the nut? Plectrum holder ?
Most likely it's a little strap to keep the strings from buzzing above the nut.
I was really drawn towards the Engelmann Spruce top sound.
Really nice comparison video. Good job Mike!
What is the song he is playing @ 2:20?
It's an old fiddle tune called Salt Creek
Excuse my ignorance but anyone know the scale he is playing at 6:03?
Dorian I think.
omg the engleman spruce sings!!!!
The second one reminds me of my Gil Fern x bracing. :)
Five bar englemann spruce one is much more my sound preference.
I'd love to know the tune he's playing at 4:20, anyone know?
+Rob Byers That would be the Tennessee Waltz!
I think it's the "Tennessee Waltz".
It is!
It's gorgeous!
Tennessee walst ,I think
Could he be any nicer 😊 wow
I prefer a bowlback.
Can hear him play but not talk. Oh well.
