    I thought I was a musician but now I understand I'm just a clown playing some chords around a campfire, lol.

    the dual-improvisation on big sciota that starts around 5:35 is just phenomenal: they are so instantly responsive to each others thematics, dynamic changes, where they need to be range-wise to complement each other and fill the sound spectrum. I couldn't come close to writing counterpoint like that, and thile-daves are doing it on the spot!

    There is a reason Chris Thile and Nickel Creek recorded their first album at the age of 14 (and kudos to the Watkins, who are amazing as well), and won the MacArthur Genius Grant at the age of 31, has recorded with Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, Jerry Douglas, founded the Punch Brothers, and now hosts Live From Here. He is a flat-out genius who hangs around with like people. Oh, to have him sitting around the campfire with me and my friends!

      It's about capturing a moment in the lives of these performers (and to generate interest in Old First Reformed Church, Brooklyn). Fiddle tune request time is an important part of this duo's concerts. I'm glad I was able to document it here.

      My favorite part of this video has always been a tie between calling Jerusalem Ridge the Call Me Baby of fiddle tunes and the haranguing that Thile gives the audience for requesting songs with lyrics.

    Chris Thile is the Mozart of the mandolin. However as Salieri once said to Mozart "too many notes." I couldn't hear the melody on Forked Deer. Sorry, I said it.

  • @Michael-ro8dm

    It is not a requisite for a fiddle tune to have no lyrics. That's a misconception. Maybe playing a, ahem, fiddle, would be a more essential item to be concerned with when playing, you know ehh, fiddle tunes

    • @derekskater1996
      @derekskater1996 4 роки тому +1

      That’s why it’s “playing a fiddle tune”, or else on fiddle it would be known as just “just a tune”. Transcription takes talent and that’s part of the fun and intrigue
