  • Our good friend Chris Thile stopped by the shop for a mandolin tasting after two sold-out Nickel Creek performances at the Ryman. We had a blast discussing and swapping mandolins, mandolas, and even a few mandocellos! In this video, Chris is A/B'ing both of our 1927 Gibson Fern mandolins. He begins with 'Mildred'. Both incredible instruments, and both currently available at Carter Vintage! Give us a call or email for more information! And many thanks to Chris for stopping by!

    The mandolins look like they are standing there yelling “play me”! “play me”!

    Some of the best examples of Chris's virtuosity are where he's at ease like this, testing instruments. Wonderful video, I even like hearing him play as the Amtrak passes with that wistful horn and he builds louder phrases to match. The master playing the Master model. What a treat.

    He’s like a kid in a candy store where the kid is a genius and does care about the candy just the sound. Amazing understanding of sound at it most intricacy and most likely the greatest mandolinist to ever live. Incredible. He was born to do this and he loves every Second of playing these Lohrs.

    A testament to each instruments Unique characteristics. Even when it comes to the Holy Grail Early-late 20s Gibson F-5’s. Like em both--Thile’ is the greatest blessed Mando Man to ever walk this Planet🇺🇸

    How many people have either smashed, set fire, or took their mandolins to a pawn shop after hearing him. Just screwing around on some Loars for fun is either sickening or inspiring to watch. Without a doubt the best I have ever heard.

    its almost to me that chris can play faster in his mind then his fingers but the result is a kind of jumping of time space? i do not know anyone who can play as naturally or as accurately as chris he is outside my experience , in a class by himself like a jimmi of the mandolin!

      About $80k for a mint Fern like these 27’s. Signed Loars I believe are only 24-25 flower pots and yes about $150k in great shape nowadays.

      @elcidbob 4 роки тому +1

      @@jonathanstotts amusingly, you think you're being witty, but you failed to notice that I didn't put forth my opinion, just the observation that one of the recognized living masters of the instrument highly values these particular instruments to the point he has purchased one, but not a Hutto. As to the value of Chris's opinion, he's managed to get a MacArthur Fellowship as a mandolinist, which is an absurd thing to even consider the possibility of.

    • @jonathanstotts

      elcidbob My friend, you may not have put out an opinion, but you have one, and probably appreciate it when it’s valued. Not witty, but standing up for my fellow man. I agree it’d be near impossible to top a Loar, but I took issue with putting another down. Peace.
