Skoda is under the Volkswagen umbrella together with the likes of Audi, Porsche, Bentley etc. Very nice cars. Fun fact: My mom is 76 and she drives a 200hp Skoda Turbo sedan as her daily driver.

first time i heard anti lag in person was like 15yrs ago at drift event, it was rb26 and forget the ears you can feel that shit in your lungs :D

I love my Skoda Octavia and having paid off my 2nd one, a 2016 Octavia vRS mk3 5e, I decided to "do it up". Adding new MCA suspension, Milltek exhaust, Racing Line stage 1 tune and Racing Line intake system and turbo inlets has turned my family wagon into a sleeper that brings a smile to my face every day! The sound while not like those in this video you can sense the animal lurking beneath as it now punches out ~320hp
Skoda was always good in rallying. This generation of the Fabia was made from 2001 until 2007, 3 generations have followed it. Before was the Felicia, which is a reworked Favorit, produced from 1994-2001, 1985-1994 respectively. The interesting story of the Favorit is that it was the first front-engine model of the brand since a long time (1960's I think), and it was during the production of the Favorit that Volkswagen bought the brand, reworked the Favorit (injection istead of a carburetor) and in '94, they did a major uphaul, and renamed the model Felicia. I drive one myself, from 1999. At that time, they had optional extras like AC, ABS, airbags, power windows, but where I live, in Hungary, it was a poor people's car, so mine has three extras: a cigarette lighter, central locking and a sunroof. The Favorit/Felicia were made as pickup van and panel vans as well, the Felicia had an interesting version, labelled "Fun", which was basically a pickup, but with the rear panel of the cabin retractable, unfolding two more rear seats and a now open rear section, it is worth a googling. During the soviet era, there were models like the 1000 MBX, which was a coupe of their first rear-engine sedan. Also, this was a unibody design, we are talking beyond the iron curtain, 1964. Later, there were coupe models like the 110 RS and Garde/Rapid, which were rear-engined coupe's, and handled a bit like Porsches, therefore their nickname poor man's Porsche (peasant's Porsche in lit. translation from Hungarian). I would advise you to google these ones, too, and my main point after this large detour, the Felicia Kit Car, that was a great rally car, as well. And one last intersting fact, Skodas were made with basically the same engine block from the 1000MB in 1964 until the Felicia, an OHV one, which started as a 1000ccm, and went up to 1300ccm a bit before the Favorit, but was also built into the Fabia, with 1400ccm. The same pushrod engine from the sixties, which was designed in the 1920's by NSU. My car has this same block, with 50kW of power. It purrs like kitten, but can perform if needed until safe highway speed, it can get up to 160 km/h / 100mph without much of a difficulty. When the Felicia came out, journalists were joking on the cat that the rpm gauge has a green field, from 2000rpm until 3500, implying that under 2000 it is weak, and over 3500 it is just noisy but does not perform. Kinda true, but those opinions are exaggerated of course. I hope I managed to give you some interesting information, have a good one!
I believe the 1st generation Fabia came out in 1999 - I bought one in July 2000. Production of the earlier Felicia may have overlapped with the Fabia Mk I.
think these are later, we had the ugly Fabia as company car, i started in 2000 and got an Astra SW, after 3 years a Stilo Multiwagon. But soon after the Stilo MW wasn't delivered anymore. Guess that was somewhere in 2005, then our engineers got a Fabia, these were pre facelift Fabia's that were made until 2004.
Jako fanda rallye a Octavie WRC zvláště ....... taky jsem viděl ve státech Top Fuell dragstery ........ když to srovnám tak dragstery pro zvukový zážitek jsou asi tak 100x lepší (fyzicky se třese vzduch a zem, jeden týpek s turbínovým dragsterem náklaďákem machrování pro diváky přehnal a ulámal větve stromů 50m za plotem, a taky tím 30 plamentem totálně ušvařil asi 30 m asfaltu), jinak Top Fuel dragster má okolo 10 000 koní (slovy deset tisíc) a na rozdíl od Fabie WRC nemá ani katalyzátory, ani tlumiče výfuku, ani turbínu která by tlumila výfuk. 300 koňový WRC je zvukově takový malý směšný nic.
Tudíž nechápu jak může být Američan unešený ze zvuku prdícího WRCa. Nespíš si z nás děla srandu, protože ani jednou nezmínil ultimátní jízdní vlastnosti těch WRC motokár, což je na rallye to úplně nejdůležitější.
It's not really common for people in America to even know about Škoda or Tatra, so the fact that you admire them is for me, a Czech, really fascinating :D My family had always a Škoda as far as I remember, starting with the old, dark blue 105, blue Favorit, black Felicia, silver Fabia (first gen), then my father got second gen Fabia as a company car and nowadays I drive the Rapid liftback. I always wanted Octavia, well, the Rapid is at least using some parts from the first gen Octavia even if it's a car about 14 years younger. I am still quite young and haven't driven too many cars, but the Škoda is the most enjoyable car I have driven so far. One day, I'd love to rally with a Škoda car, and my crazy dream is to finish the Dakar rally with a Škoda onde day :D. Anyway, I hope you'll make it into the Mladá Boleslav Škoda museum, I was there years ago and really enjoyed it, as there were really interesting models. I remember they had some kind of prototype Rapid (liftback) on display even before it went into production and I was so surprised how great and futuristic it looked. Of course, the serial model is way simpler, but I still love that car and as a relatively young kid I didn't expect it'd be my first car one day :)
Edit: Also, my father somehow used to have a Tatra 613 after the revolution when he was young, but sold it later. He never spoke about it and told me only coincidentaly, and you could feel how he regrets selling it to this day
Škoda went into different league last 15 years. What was once Škoda, today is Dacia. Basically, i see Škoda as almost german car at this point.

I'd love to get the first generation, I really like it's design and feel like it was ahead of it's time, but I might be biased because I like the late 90's and early 00's overall. And the vRS version is even nicer. It's kinda a meme in the Czech car community but honestly I don't care :D

So Skoda has been around rally since the 60's in group 2 group 4 and group A and they are chechslovakian both ken block and Colin McRae have driven fabias ken drove his in Missouri funny enough i don't remember how the skoda finished in 2020? Or was it 21? But when Colin drove it they came up short from winning the WRC championship
hello from Czechia:) i had Škoda fabia 1,6 16valve 105hp, and it was the strongest model you could get(and same design as those on the video), it was awesome little daily, practical, stable, you could get it to around 210-220kmh on highway and it still felt totally alright:) as for present day line up of Škoda i really like KodiaqRS model(americans would say its little SUV, but it has around 200hp and with agresive driving it still made around 25mpg), but i dont think it is offered with US homologation, maybe its time EU and US got their shiat together:D

First experience of anti-lag like this was live at the old RAC rally when the escort Cosworth WRC cars would come through. You could hear them coming from 2 valleys over. Rally is absolutely epic live.
Historically, Škoda was a large arms factory on the level of the German Krupp. In addition to passenger cars, it has a division of heavy industry, it also manufactures locomotives, turbines for power plants and pressure vessels for nuclear reactors, in the past Czechoslovakia built entire nuclear power plants with its own help, also tanks, fighters and bombers for export, something from this industry still exists, after all Tatra it also has a weapons division. It's a shame that Škoda only has a civilian program. I recommend looking at the old Škoda RS 130 and RS 200 specials.
Actually Ken used Skoda Fabia R5 in one of his rallies. Don't know which one. But he has driven it on few stages.

I have a 2004 Skoda Octavia VRS station wagon. Had it from new, would not need another car until I run this one into the ground. The definition of reliable, and also very ergonomic and spacious.

I had a tuned Skoda Felicia that looked completely normal, except it was lowered. That was just before Volkswagen took over. Had a heap of fun at traffic lights, tricking Mercs, BMWs, Audi's into eating my dust.
Favorit is last Czech car dude.. Felicia isnt.

When Skoda merged into the VAG Group and intervened in the rally with the Octavia WRC, they only needed 3 runs to get the engine stable. VW didn't get that for a long time in her rally car.
I think you should probably check out ford Sierra cosworth RS500 . The sound they put out is unreal.
I got a Fabia MK2 1.6 TDI, and seeing this mk1 WRC makes me smile
a friend of my stepdad who lives down the road from him used to rally a evo x and my stepdad would help him and his wife with maintenance. it was also a daily driver. one day he got a request from the neighbours to quiet down the car, meaning put the exhaust back on because leaving for work at 5am meant the whole neighborhood was awake it was so loud lol. sadly his wife passed from cancer and he gave up rallying which was a damn shame.
You should check out some of the Czech rally stages. Semetin for example, which is the scariest of all. Or a compilation from Barum Czech Rally. Scary fast stages and lots of your beloved Škodas :D
I owned a 2015 Skoda Octavia from 2015 to 2019. Their road going cars are so so reliable. Dull might some say, but the reliability and quality of these cars are top notch. Would buy again.

Man my mom has a skoda fabia and when i drive its feels like im a rally, i just love driving that car fast and my first car will be for sure a skoda.
You know what's funny... Usually when you meet a Škoda Fabia in civil driving, it's usually some pensioner driving like at least 30km/h below max speed limit and basically they're there just to be overtaken... like an obstacle.
But don't get me wrong, it's still cool to see someone being genuinely excited about seeing a Fabia. 😅
1999 was the first year the mk1 came out, I personally like the mk3 the best I owned a mk2.
the pops and bangs are combustion in the exhaust manifold to maintain turbo spool, its called anti-lag, it means the engine can maintain boost even when they're off throttle for instant power. the more you know :)

if you dig yourself deeper in the skoda lore you will found the RS fabia, some might say VRS but the V is just the little v shape above the skoda logo and its there to tell apart it from the audi rs models, but they are simply rs too, its one of the most fun early 2000 hot hatches with a 150 hp 1.9 pdtdi engine

I have fabia combi 2007 1.2 HTP . Three cylinder engine gives the car brutal power 63 HP So if you go uphill you have to turn off aircondition. =D

You should definitelly check the WRC VW Polo sounds, they were insane! From the starting with the anti-lag popping like crazy to the buzzing of the engine they were amazing!

The Mk1 Fabia and Octavia both in diesel and petrol, carry one of the most successful engines the VAG group has ever made, namely the 1.8 I4T and the 1.9 I4 TDI, a cheaper alternative to the 2.2 I5T and 2.5 I5T TDI.....however, very tuning approachable! Biggest issue is rust!
P.S. It's like choosing between a Golf, Audi A4, A6, a station wagon with more or less TWR (thrust to weight) and money to maintain it......all of the VW, Skoda, Seat, Audis had the same engine....
5 more years (as for 25y rule I suppose) and You'll be able to pull one sweet MK1 Fabia vRS to US, imagine how rare it will be there, just one sidenote: it's 130BHP 1.9TDI only, so it's one smol coal roller
The Skoda Fabia had a quirky Cousine, a concept Car, The Skoda Fabia R5 Wagon. The drivetrain of a Fabia R5 in a very compact Wagon.
I love the Fabia Wagon (well i drive a 07 one), Its a regular Fabia Hatch with a Backpack, thats who i explain the Concept. In my Opinion its the perfect small car, lots of Space and still very inexpensive.

Since you have mentioned Ken he actually driven Skoda Fabia R5. You can actually find a relatively long video of him driving it. Its based of second generation of Skoda Fabia rather than this one which was based on the first gen. Ken was considering to stick with Skoda but for whatever reason it went sideways.

Hi mate, you should have a look at the Skoda Fabia VRs 1.9 tdi. These cars are absolutely insane when modified.
In Poland, the Skoda brand is seen as cars for retirees, cab drivers or sales representatives - usually in white, beige (or some other boring color). By design, these are supposed to be cars slightly larger than the class competition, at a good price, with clever extras like umbrella compartments. Of course, Skoda wants to change the image of a boring brand by competing in the WRC, adding more powerful engine versions or more interesting colors. My favorite is the Skoda Superb in the 2.0 TSI engine version with 280 hp - it's almost the same engine as the one in the Golf R so it's easy to raise its power even to 500 hp. Plus the station wagon body and "dragon skin" color with black accessories. - Audi RS6 killer 🤣 This would definitely not be a boring car to drive every day
While in the rest of Europe, it is seen as a brand for clever people, it is cheaper than premium brands but it definitely adds values and has everything you need to have in a car! Skoda is most selling brand f.e. in the Czech Republic and Switzerland. They are now becoming quite expensive, I believe this brand will be soon hitting different segment as Superb, Kodiaq or Enyaq are definitely cars reaching very high stylish and luxury feeling cars.

Hello from Czech Republic 🇨🇿❤ a good car for everyday driving is the Škoda Fabia RS of the first generation. A very good and practical car for little money.. unfortunately it is now a very old car and it is quite difficult to find in good condition. And it has a turbo diesel, which put a lot of people off. I love V8 🇺🇸 rumble.. old and new.. SVT Cobra Terminator.. Corvette C6 Z06.. atd..
I did my driver's license in this car, unfortunately the original one has a 1.2 htp with 3 cylinders, it's not exactly my favorite car, but for example the Octavia 1.9tdi 81kw, great car
Skoda is really a car for WRC-Champions! The current World Champion, Kalle Rovanperä, was driving Skoda in WRC 2-Class and win also that Championship before the "main" WRC-Class. Last season Skoda won both the WRC 2 and WRC 3 - Classes World Championships. Both with Finnish drivers and co-drivers, both women!!! Skoda is basically like VW. Same main parts, little bit different inside and different design. Great car for much cheaper than the same VW. VW has always been the most "over priced" car at least in Europe. Tribute to Ken Block! Ken driving and "studying" the legendary WRC Group B Audi Quattros in a secret Audi "museum" in Germany. He really is/was like a kid in a candy store, cause it was always his childhood dream to try these beasts. He was a Pro WRC-Driver first, so he knew these things and heard the stories. Audi had built a third, "supersonic" Group B car, half the size of the Quattros, but it was so "over the top", that it was never used for racing. And then "the End" came for that era. The "snap, crackle and pops" you describe is basically what every ICE sounds like without a muffler in the exhaust. I used to have a 14bhp scooter with a custom exhaust, of which one of the bolts snapped while riding it and at that point my scooter made more noise than that Skoda lol

You shall one day visit Mladá Boleslav - Škoda Muzeum and their depository - with race spec/ proto cars/ demo cars + look to DSG ''fart'' that was introduced with 3rd gen VRS/ and I guess 6 gen GTIs from VW, and as mentioned Mr. Block he was also assigned to RS2000/R5 Fabias. If to buy such car you looking for kit-cars and those where made from every gen of Fabia (WRC,S2000,R5) as lot of rally cross conversions, one sedan spec circuit car still available of gen I in Czech

The Fabia WRC was the successor of the Octavia WRC program, similar proven technology and know-how pressed into a smaller package (they sound pretty much identical imo). Not sure how this didn't have more success with the works team - it could absolutely be fast, McRae came agonizingly close to a podium finish in Australia 2005 before having to retire with technical difficulties. The legend says the faulty part was a Ford product
The problem was poor accessibility to parts in the engine compartment. Not only work on the engine, but also on the clutch and transmission very often took more time than allowed in the service park. This then led either to the end of participation or to a car that was not 100% efficient. That only changed with the Fabia S2000. Ken Block drove Skoda Fabia in the US. You can find a video from this event. This is the first model of Fabia. Now there is already a fourth. The third model was the most winning really model . I`m from Slovakia
You should look into the VW Polo in the WRC. VW shifted its focus from Skoda in the WRC. They had with Sebastian Ogier the top driver, which started at Skoda with the Fabia. Since the Polo and the Fabia are basically the same chassis he went to VW, including the budget. He and the Polo went to three world championships straight.

the noise drama is a result of having an extra fuel injector spraying directly into the exhaust header, just to keep the turbo at full boost to avoid having to spool up after changing gear sounds even better live. be illegal now due to emission laws. the flame pop happens when so much is injected it uses all the oxygen in the exhaust and ignites on mixing with the outside air. have seen this on saloon car races 30 years ago

These WRC models are nice, also the older Fabia looks good in WRC. Sadly where I live they were literally everywhere and because there were very cheap also people never really cared about them. Today only the oldest ones survived as Gypsy wagons which is basically a car that has not been serviced since last person sold it. What I mean by this is that people knowing the car have some kind inner disgust when we see the regular Fabia on the roads.
You should hear the snap crackle and pop of IMSA hypercars @Road America. Sounds like a shotgun when they downshift into turn 5.
