0:52 That is a *Mitsubishi's Lancer Evolution III Group A* rally car driven by *Uwe Nittel* (from Germany) in the first year of WRC (in 1997) where all the other competitors have started to use a new era of rally cars of that time which was a World Rally Car (it ended last year in 2021. This year, the top category of WRC are now using a new hybrid rally cars called the Rally1). At that time, Mitsubishi Ralliart is still using their Group A cars as it was still proven to be competitive in the rally stages.

First year of WRC?! wtf are you smoking? you do realize WRC started in 1973 right?! not to mention that was definitely before 1997, 1996 tops, in 1997 EVO IV was in use instead...You need to get you facts straight mate. First of all Group A ended 1999/2000, then the era of the 2000CC started, then 1.800CC, and nowadays 1.4 CC Hybrid. Rally 1 is a set of rules, its not specific to the new cars themselves. every now and then said rules are changed by the FIA like it happened now.

@@MetallvmPT You didn't read my comment properly (or you don't understand it?), let me repeat it for you.
In the first year of WRC (in 1997) where all the other competitors have started to use a new era of rally cars of that time which was a World Rally Car. I'm emphasis on *the first year of WRC (in 1997) where all the other competitors have started to use a new era of rally cars which was a World Rally Car* . If you still don't understand it, I feel bad for you.
Also you want to argue with me with false facts? Lol. The first year of World Rally Car era started in 1997, the year that you're mentioning in your false fact comment is the 3rd and 4th year of World Rally Car era. Even from Group A days the cars were running with 2.0 litre engines (ehem Lan Evo's 4G63Ts is a 2.0 litre engine ehem) until 2011 where they switched to 1.6 litre engines which they are still using now with hybrid system in the new Rally1 cars. There isn't a Rally1 car that is running with 1.4 litre engine (yet).
From what I'm seeing, you're the one who needs to do a lot of reading (properly of course) before you present me with true facts (stop smoking while you're at it). Have a good day.

Rallydrivers are undoubtedly the most skilled drivers of any 4 wheeled motorsport. The way theese guys and their codrivers fly through lousy public roads at racetrack speeds is just unbelievable... compared to racing laps on a track the skills needed are through the roof!

    • @philsurtees

Complete nonsense. Rally Drivers aren't even in the same country as the ballpark of the Formula 1 drivers. Racing the Monaco Grand Prix, for example; missing the walls on either side by literally inches, for 78 laps, while contending with other drivers, sitting inches above the road and having an obscured view thanks to the Halo, makes rally driving look like this video, i.e. rally driving compared to the women's racing they call NASCAR. Rally drivers are amazing - far more technical and difficult than NASCAR - but nowhere near Formula 1...

Rallydrivers miss trees, walls, bridges and ditchs by literally inches... and the dont race a track as well known and rehersed as f1 drivers... and there is alot less grip...

watch any mark higgins onboard videos of him hotlapping the isle of man in subaru STIs. those videos are insane. watch all of them. he started off running stock STIs around the isle of man. all fully sponsored by subaru. on one of his starts he lost it and almost crashed out ( with a passenger in the car) and made the most insane save right at the start of his run. those videos are 100% onboard and he's talking over them explaining everything that's happening and what he was thinking and doing at the time. they're amazing. the 2014 video is my favorite. stock car with roll cage, straight pipes so spectators could hear it coming, better break pads, adjustable shocks. probably better tires. it's pretty raw.

    Rally is so crazy..
It used to be crazier with group b and the lack of rules for the spectators.
I’ve been to a few different rallies in different countries and it’s a full on week…
The best is when you have to/used to have to walk on the tracks to get to the viewing spots… You would hear a horn and then see 50 people run and jump into the forest, it’s part of the adventure. Also if you keep the maps you can drive all of the stages and special stages the days after the rally. It really gives you appreciation for how gnarly and fast they actually drive.

The World Rally Championship used to come to my city of Perth. It was great, they raced around the southwest forests and the pine plantations in the hills east of the city, which the roads consist of gravel (West Oz Hills Gravel) it's like driving on marbles, heaps of fun to take the car out for a thrash on, although my old Commodore used to get a bit tailly around 90kph on it. There was even a special stage held at night in the city on the river Esplanade where 2 cars would line up on separate tracks that crossed each other in an under and over tunnel bridge. The cars got heaps of air when they went over the bridge jump. It was sick, too bad it ended in 2006.

I remember seeing Rally on the Sports channel when i was in my teens, it was ended officially due to being so dangerous to the audience which couldn´t be secured on the roads.
But me being an Austrian, especially the Audi scenes are exciting because that might be Walter Röhrl (the letter "ö" spells like the u in "hurt, turn or urge) who is a fellow countryman.
And a legend in Rally sports. Famously driving the Audi Quattro to victory multiple times.
The Porsche 911 was famous for having the best traction on difficult roads out of all sports cars of it´s generation, holding that title for many years. Thus, also popular in Rally.

Now, I saw those cars in the eighties. There were still the two -wheel driven cars like the Lancia 037. And then came Audi with the first "Quattro" and it climbed up to the Quattro S1. This car gave you goosebumbs even at the starting line to a stage.... now, these days I think cars are nearly that fast but there is not the same atmosphere ....

It's very good to follow it on TV these days because there are so many cameras following the track these days. You get all the time passing times for the different participants, how they are + or - in relation to each other. I know old womens who follow it, and they are not interested in any other sport. And something happens all the time, like someone hits a rock on the side of the road and continues with a puncture on one wheel, someone loses a gear or someone drives off and loses 20 seconds before he's up on the track. So it happens more than in track racing and how they are in the race can change the muck quickly.

Apart from Group B pretty much all rally cars, until this year, were based on production chassis, with stock parts increasing the further away you get from WRC.
It's only in 2022 that WRC changed from production chassis to "silhouette cars" due to the (very much criticized) introduction of hybrid systems.
On the plus side, the switch also brought even tougher crash protection.

Meeke on maximum attack for 20.5 miles and you can hear Paul Nagels pacenotes (in english!) through the whole ordeal. Hypnotic piece of youtube.

I once was accidentally in Targa Tasmania LOL in my sky blue Datsun 120Y with an orange bonnet. What a day that was. We were looking for a football match up the back of whoop whoop and there were all these people on the side of the roads waving and cheering. I laughed myself silly (after pulling over to the side of the road to let them get past) that day and every time I've thought about it since. Great memory. Great old Daddo.

That in-car shot (where he's giving the thumbs up to the spectators) where it looks like the driver is loosing it is called a Scandinavian flick, which is a quick opposite steer(flick) to break traction on the rear end, followed by a full lock turn and full throttle into the corner, the idea is to get the geometry of the back end sliding around the corner helping the momentum and corner speed without heavy breaking. It's also used by Drift community for the same reason.

I too am a Nascar fan. Grew up on dirt oval racing. And I have to say, Rally drivers are probably the ballsiest drivers on earth. Even more so than top fuel drag racers. The conditions they drive in at the speeds they do is sheer insanity. I love racing but rally racing terrifies me lol.

Whoo, I don't know, man, I've seen a number of top-fuel engines just straight up detonate when the driver lights off the throttle. Rally driving requires some real guts, but it takes a whole different breed to knowingly strap into what amounts to a bomb with a seat.

you should try and find videos about the co-driver and how they use pace notes which comprise certain codes to enable the driver to drive at the max.
In rallying, communication between the driver and co-driver is paramount to achieving good stage times and keeping the car on the road.
Because everything is happening at such high speed and the driver has their hands full during a stage, it can be difficult for them to take in information delivered in a normal fashion. Because of this, co-drivers develop their own way of relaying crucial information to the driver, effectively creating a whole new language that both members must be fluent in.
