Retroid Pocket 4 Pro - “Objective” Review

- EDIT: With further testing/ tweaking, this can play all PS2 games no problem, therefore its compatibility rating is now a 16/20 bringing the overall score up to 82.
I was the problem when it came to my issues playing Jak 2/3

Woah, reviewing with a spreadsheet. Damn, bro, that’s unique.
Great review! Loved the personal additions, like completing a game with the joysticks.
I'm with you brother. I got the watermelon pro on release. And I absolutely adore it. Truly my favorite thing I own
This is awesome, I want one too.
Very solid review! I've recently been in the market for a pocketable retro gaming device that has a solid price/performance/quality ratio that would be a nice companion to my Steam Deck OLED. I specifically wanted something that is easy to slide in and out of my pocket that also had thumb sticks and was powerful (PS2/GC is the dream but I'd settle for PSP). I bought a 35XXH initially on sale for $46, which was a steal, but it arrived with a defective screen. So, I decided to spend a little more money on quality. I was in between the RP2S and the RP4 base model since I couldn't really justify the $200+ price for the Pro. I went with the RP2S mostly because for $100 nothing else competes, but also because I was afraid the 4 would be slightly too long to fit well in my pocket. I'd love to have the form factor of the 4, but beyond that I'm incredibly happy and surprised by the quality and build of the 2S, including how well it fits in my pocket. If it were a little longer like the 4 it would be sticking out, so I think I made the right choice.
The overall value is really solid and I think it's very underappreciated for the price to performance in comparison to the 4 and 4 Pro. I get that there are certain things that aren't appealing like the 3.5" screen, which I would love if it were even slightly bigger, but I also really don't mind it. It reminds me a lot of the 35XXH which I liked when I had it.
Anyway, I look forward to more videos and to see the handheld industry improve in the future!
Spot on. I prefer this version of the scoring system.
Nice! I’m enjoying using the Delta Game Emulator app on my iPhone. So many awesome retro games 🙌🏾
RetroArch is on iPhone now too!
Lol iPhone is just a joke, I tried to unzip a PSP iso and it opens RetroArch, the fuck???
@@TechSpaceCowboyI have not looked into that one yet! I’ve seen some reviews on it tho

The Etsy Flip Clip grip Case for the Retroid pocket is a must buy. Its a total game changer.
Got a link?
@@TechSpaceCowboy I don't know if Yotube will let me post a link but it's by "EpicPrintingShop"
The listing is called "Case & Grip for Retroid Pocket 4 (and Pro) -- 2-in-1 -- 3D Printed"
Seller name is PartTimeCAD

I was really wanting to get one of these but I am SO glad I didn't so now I can get the Odin 2 lite instead it's gonna be sooooo nice
I love my rp4 pro and I love my new miyoo mini plus I got as well and I hope the odin 2 mini is good cause I’m keeping an eye on it
тоже заказал себе такую консоль теперь вот жду
I was considering buying one of these but now with Emulators on iOS I’ve been using my phone as my main old school console with a Backbone. The PlayStation backbone and PPSSPP really makes it feel like a modern suped up psp.
I have both and while I’m super happy to have emulators on my iPhone now (and really enjoying PSP with a backbone) this device is just a better experience overall. I definitely recommend it
Agreed lad. Very agree.
Exciting to see how the Odin2 Mini is.
It’s on order!
It’s too expensive
@@TechSpaceCowboy yesss
@@intransition8548 agreed sadly
The RP4 looks like such a great device! I’ll have to wait to get one because I recently ordered the RG35xxSP and I’m so stoked!
Crazily comprehensive review. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Great house. Congrats.
Thanks.
Retroid Pocket 4 Pro + Analogue Pocket = Perfection
For me this is the RG35XX-SP + Odin 2 Pro
But pretty much the same thing lol
Sounds like you would love the odin 2 mini since it plays all ps2 and gc without trouble and switch games. Only problem its double the price of rp4 pro.
Oh I already have my alarm set for preorder tonight lol
@@TechSpaceCowboy Sweet, hope to see a review on that.
It would be nice if you could rank the odin 2
Already have it in hand and am doing a lot of testing/ playing with it. It MIGHT earn a higher score than steam deck OLED. Time will tell
A bit confused at timestamp 12:10. I thought you sold your Steam Deck (as per ending remarks in the Miyoo Mini (v4) - Honest Review). Did it make a return to your gaming armoury?
I sold the one I had, but still have used my past knowledge/ experience to add it to the overall scorecard
That jumpgate dock looks amazing, I might actually pick that up just for my android phone. Any quirks that I should know about?
Nah. But it’s kinda short, might be a bit short for a vertical form factor
@@TechSpaceCowboy Good point, I think I'll still give it a shot though as it seems incredible. Thanks for the recommendation!
is the screen ghosting or is it just the recording ?
Just the recording, iPhone
It would be fantastic if you could make a video of Odin 2.
Waiting on delivery:)
please this is great for the price especially that it can play F-Zero GX but I am sad it does not have oled, any similar oled device that is small and can play more demanding ps2 and gamecube games?
Try looking into the Anbernic RG505
@@TechSpaceCowboy has oled but sadly cant play f-zero gx
Would this be a better choice than the Odin 2 base model???
The Odin 2 technically scores higher than this.
Biggest deciding factor is what games you wanna play and how large you care it is
There has zero grip or ergonomics on the RP4. You would be hard pressed to find anywhere that doesn’t recommend a gripcase for it. This is a good review. This is weighted pretty hard to Android handhelds that have charging ports on the bottom which is about half. It’s a decent handheld but nothing innovative more so than the RP3 other than an SOC upgrade.
I ordered one of these with the grips. It's unplayable without it 😅. With how small the device is and both joysticks on the bottom, it's super uncomfortable without the grips. Still playable but not for long sessions. The only thing this device is missing is full switch emulation which is probably a couple years away. Other than that, portability, capability and form factor considered, it's one of the best devices in this price range.
I just got a RP3+ earlier this year, waiting for black friday to get the RP4P.
Have you heard about the Odin 2 mini? About the same size but wayyyy more powerful might be worthwhile to save a few extra bucks for that instead.
It’s on order!
Just got the rp4p for 160€ on aliexpress
Do you have a link to the dock or could put it in the comments?

You can buy an HDMI to USBC cable for super cheap as well. That's what I use
Is the screen blurry or does it have any ghosting?
No ghosting, just my camera
Dont know why, but that screen bezel just tilts me to pluto.
Have you reviewed theodin 2?
It’s coming. Using it right now
Nice video ! Its east to download ps1 games ?
Just search ps1 rom archive or rom mega thread.
Could you please share this Excel file for download? Thnx
It’s view only but here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-etUlx5vhrYsk1yE-p4DIhkPbCyA84GQAFlBavD_qAo/edit
Making a lot of changes/ tweaks still with this system
@@TechSpaceCowboy great thanx
Ain't 82 like a B rating? Thus 4/5?
100 is physically impossible on my scale. Nothing that exists today even earns a 90. 82 is a very high score.
Why judging a pocketable screen against a large screen. That goes for a few other areas as well.
It’s to have an objective system to judge all retro handhelds by, that way you can compare any two devices and weigh their merits fairly objectively
Unless I misunderstood you, you gave the device points for being pocketable but took away points for having smaller screen lol just kinda confusing
Correct. This is how you can compare two devices with different specs. A manufacturer has to weigh these tradeoffs, so this is a way to try to give an objectively better device across different form factors.
@@TechSpaceCowboy I hear you and in theory your logic is sound, but I think in practice you’re not accomplishing what you’re trying to accomplish. At the end of the day, everything just “cancels out”. There’s a reason why reviews are inherently objective and don’t typically try to be overly objective in this way. Not a bad review at all! Very thorough. Just a criticism of your overly complex rating system.
Can it play Halo 3?
Can it run gamepass?
Game pass yes
Game pass is seamless. Steam link for whatever reason only displays the top left corner when I'm connected to my PC.. when I launch a game it goes full screen. Not sure what that's about but it probably has something to do with steam settings/resolution (2k on PC to 720p for RP4P).

Sticks should be above
its an ANBERNIC RG35XX H not the rg 28xx h
Yeah I know I misspoke. Happens to the best of us
Switch games? Seriously? Does it play Alan Wake 2?
It doesn't play Elden Ring in 4k absolute trash 0/10
The device tops out with PS2 in regards to 3D games. Some games like ratchet and clank can use 4x resolution and keep 60fps while god of war you have to drop to 2x. ICO and Shadow of Colossus you have to drop the res to 1x and it looks a little muddy and not worth playing in my opinion. As for switch, "most" 2D games and 2.5D games run well. Super Mario Bros wonder, super Mario rpg, axiom verge, celeste, hollow knight etc run good. Games like owl boy won't boot unless it's in 540p res. That one seems a little weird as it doesn't seem that graphically challenging. Capable device tho.
its almost comedic the amount of subjective features being counted as objective.
“Objective”
“6-7 hours” of battery life playing Gamecube is way overblown.
Los colores y brillos de la pantalla de esta retroid 4 pro es un asco y no se vé nada. Em cambio la pantalla del 3 plus sí era excelente
5 horas hablando y no muestra nada
