When I was young, and naïve, I thought this song would be perfect for my wedding. I'm no longer young, and much less naïve...but I still think it's the perfect wedding song. Thank you, Karen....your voice and my dream live on.
Mariah Carey doesn't strain, her voice sounded hoarse because of her overworking her voice without rest... They don't sound like cows, get it right. And Mariah and Whitney used proper singing techniques just that they lost their voices just because of their negligence.....
I Love her voice and have done for years so sad a beautiful person inside and out to go so young. Thankfully the videos are still here. God bless you Karen.
I'm 13 years old and I listen to these kind of songs because I love it when my grandma will sing along and tell stories about her life.. I also listen to new songs released these days and yes it makes me feel like dancing but it doesn't have meaning and you CAN'T feel the love. It's all just about drugs, being high, sex, and just completely inappropriate. I know I sound like a grown woman but this is how I feel. Whenever I listen to these kind of music it makes me cry because I can feel love and the soul of music. Singers these days are talented, yes but I hope they would continue making music a beautiful gift from above and not just write it and then that's it. Make it remembering like when you listen to it after 40 years or something, it'll make you feel like life was worth living just like when you listen to this one. All I can say is I'm glad I knew these kind of singers.
Wonderful post Hermione, I was in my teens and twenties in the 70's so I've love the Carpenters from way back.I recently listened to a short interview on youtube of a man that was like a record producer that said he worked with Karen and Richard when they first began singing together, when Karen was just 16 years old. The interviewer asked him if the heartfelt, soulful way she seemed to emote every song, was something she developed over the years, and he said NO... she was born that way... it was not something she learned.
Same here, Hermione. Since I was very young, grandma always played these kinds of songs; that's why I still love listening to them until now and I know every lyric by heart. I'm 17 now. hehe :)
+pajamagirl123 Sadly your comment is lost on so many, especially clueless kids. I do agree with you 100%, her voice was absolutely perfect. Not only was it pitch perfect, but she had incredible feel and timing. As you said, it's something you can't teach.
... pitch perfect (or almost) should be a given for anyone who walks on stage claiming he/she can sing. Hopefully then he/she should also give emotions. Karen clearly can do both ! Bless !
Karen Carpenter has been my favorite singer and up to now that I am old and gray I still want to hear her music, her voice...so mellow, soothing to the ear!... I felt sorry when she passed away.
I was 8 years old when Karen died i remember my mother being so upset, me and my mother would listen to the carpenters while she was doing housework and singing at the same time, such great memories, my mother died from cancer at 49 years old and I played the carpenters at her funeral!! I listen to the carpenters to remind myself of great times with my mom!! it's amazing how music can't effect your life and emotions!! Karen was one in a million...
One of the rare clips we've seen of Karen showing some skin and looking mighty fine in that sexy dress too! Before her anorexia got out of hand from about 1975 onward she looked beautiful in the early years. That's how I prefer to remember her. Young and vibrant. RIP Karen.
+Shane Anthony I thought in 1980 she looked stunning. She had regained some weight for her wedding and looked amazing footage from less than a year later is hard to watch.
+Shane Anthony Karen is a bit " chubby ", in this video. Personally, I think she looks good, and is baring it somewhat which seems unusual for her. I can't help feeling... that this video may of " inspired " her to start excessive dieting, leading to anorexia. For a woman who hid behind her drumset, and dressed modestly, this seems like a total departure for Karen.
+Shane Anthony I agree too. I think this was one of her last best concerts, before she started having the problems. When her anorexia gotten severe, it was almost the kiss of death for their (her and Richard's) commercial success, from that point on out, her voice started to lose much of it's lower register, and became thin and nasally. Her best years physically and sound wise were from when she was the drummer in the band - full time, when they told her she couldn't play her drums anymore, and was burdened with having to perform her lead vocals at the front of the stage, that's when she started to have her issues. She did get to play drums on the instrumental pieces and the oldies medleys, as well as some of the lesser known songs though, and that was where her happiness was actually, but that was only roughly less than 50% of the concert, as well as the recordings. If she quit the band around the time her drums were removed, she'd probably still be alive.
listening to this song when I was little on radio AM station, I waited like an hour just to hear and record this song with my mamas old cassette and now, thanks to UA-cam wherein I was able to access and listen to this type of music. I love carpeters forever. loving my old soul even I'm just 20ylo. ♡♡♡
Karen carpenter was my dad's favorite singers. Even when dying from cancer dementia, he still recognized her voice. R.i.p both Karen and my dad. Kris Mueller
I was fortunate to have seen The Carpenters perform in Lake Tahoe, as I recall, in the early nineteen seventies. Karen's sang with the clearest voice that I had ever heard and now, some forty or so years later, for me, no one has ever matched her . . . her crystal clear voice was as "clear as a bell".
She will always be one of my favorite singers, unique contralto voice, contralto but also soft/"kind"/ smooth voice, very rare. So sad she left this world at such a young age😢, I was 14 when she passed away.
Dang it. One of the most beautiful voices in modern pop/country music. And look how healthy she looks here. Thank you, Karen and David. I know, I know, it's now "elevator music," but it's pretty dang good music. And, in my opinion, FEW women have a voice that equals Karen's. Quality, empathy, timbre. OK, she doesn't overtone. :) But she has tremendous warmth. RIP
KidIndigo1 Wow, and I mean wow! You're the second person I've seen that has called Richard Carpenter "David". I guess you really are not a Carpenters fan to not know that. Richard has taken a LOT of crap over the years from critics as being "the piano player for the Carpenters". Sure, Karen had THE voice, but people just don't realize Richard's contributions, Composer, arranger, producer, and selecting songs to fit Karen's voice. She'd be the first to tell us that. As she said in a "Tonight Show" interview in 1977 - "He picks the songs, writes, arranges, and produces, but other than that he does nothing". He's a damn good piano player as well, btw.
The sound of these songs traveled in space around the world to pass the place where I was and how to appreciate the unmistakable voice of the unforgettable interpreter Karen.
What a beautiful lady with a lovely voice. What a shame that she didn't see the beauty in herself that the rest of us saw. I wish society knew about eating disorders back then what we know now. We may have been able to help her. I wish we still had her in the world. May you rest in peace Karen.
I was thinking how good she was .. then I realised this is live !!! No playing with the voice or acoustics .. pure beauty in a wonderful voice. If there is a heaven she is probably voice coaching the angels
KAREN was on top of the world when she sang her first note, people on earth could not believe that such a fabulous voice had arrived and never to be equalled, sadly taken at her peak i'm sure she's playing sell out concerts in heaven, lucky heaven, god bless beautiful babe. xxx.
There had never been a voice like Karen's until she came along and there never will again be a voice like Karen's . She was a unique talent , just one of a kind and her beautiful voice will be played for all eternity .

Her voice is so melodic and beautiful that she doesn't even need any instrumentals backing her up. She could pretty much put you in a trance with her perfect pitch and harmony. ~Peace out and God Bless~.
I remember singing this when I was in first year high school in Manila, Philippines. Good times! My favourite singer of all time! Carpenters' songs got me through my growing years. And whenever I feel a little under the weather or in low spirits, I only have to listen to them to bring me back to Earth.
I used to imitate her voice because I want to have that kind of voice so badly but I failed. Her voice is just exceptional! Until now, I'm still trying tho.
Isn't that funny... I swear I sang all of their songs over and over and over again, until one day someone said, holy moley you sound just like her. Unfortunately I could never sound like Karen through an entire song, just where the pitch best matched my voice is all... but it was definitely soothing and fun to do that for so many years.
My family has had problems and we've seperated a little. We're in the same house though, but we all just do our own thing. Today I had one chance to fix it and I blew it. Ever since I was 4, my dad put the Carpenters on at road trips since I was 4. Suprisingly, after all these years I still remeber these songs. I'm 13 and I fell in love with them at a very young age. I get some great memories when I listen to these songs. I get tears thinking of all the times I've been with my family. Thank goodness I came back to where my heart belongs.
What a beautiful person, with a beautiful voice. So sad she left us so young. I grew up with her music and sang some of her songs in our swing choir in High School. Makes me sad to realize she was only 7 years older than me. Miss her.
When a singer can ask you, in her song, to take her hand, come with her, and go to places only she can take you...that is a gift we seldom see anymore in performers. We love you, Karen.
It's not my style of music, but her voice keeps me listening, unable to stop. How can a human voice be so perfect?
simply incredible!
HERS is..I have to stop for her..;unique' is the word..NO doubt who it is, from the first word..still gives me chills, like nobody else can..:)
That's Karen Carpenter, my friend...

Not big voice of course. But that was true of Big Crosby. Perfect voice for the microphone.
To this day, I can't believe Karen's gone. What a voice and stage presence.
I reckon shes got the most pleasant voice to listen to. Theres no strain, nothings forced. Very good singer
Mariah Carey doesn't strain, her voice sounded hoarse because of her overworking her voice without rest... They don't sound like cows, get it right. And Mariah and Whitney used proper singing techniques just that they lost their voices just because of their negligence.....

@Terry Melvin Different styles. But neither one of them were anywhere even close to that golden voice.

Honestly, Karen Carpenter is one of the most prettiest girls I’ve seen. It’s sad that she never thought that about herself...
Beautiful!
