460 F350 Better mpg and power intake mod

- Hey guys whats up!
So in this vid, I'm showing you how to do an air horn delete on a '94 Ford F350 460/7.5. The reason behind this is to increase air flow to the engine in turn gaining gas mileage and power output. This mod is free and easy, it should take about 10 mins, all that's required is a flat head screw driver and a hack saw along with something to clean up the edges. It feels more powerful and as if it has un-corked some power after this mod.
Gas Mileage- Before: 8-9 Mpg After: 10-11 Mpg
This may not be everyone's results but this helped my truck, and I still recommend it!
93, 460, 8ft bed. Stock tire's. Custom enclosed air filter. High flow cats. Flowmaster 40. Upgraded distributor plugs and wires and running slightly taller gears I'm averaging about 16 mg on freeway
What gear ratio did you go with?
@@zacharynewcomb8508 I don't have it anymore I sold it but I had 410 I got electric bike now
@@angeljohnson3004 sure it is at 55 mph
@@Roscoesadie What's the fuel mileage on that bike?
I just got a 95 F350, E40D, 460ci, 8ft bed, super crew cab(4dr). This truck was 100% bone stock. Cutting the air horns off made an incredible difference in throttle response. Now I can do a burn-out! Night and day compared to stock OEM. I will post MPGs soon after I burn both tanks. Great vid. Thanks!
How’s your mpg doing
The air snorkel is good because it pulls cold air from the front, vs the warm air in the engine bay.
That's a good mod on an EFI 460 . Gains are minimal, but for free, one can't complain.
Don't remove the snorkel or cut it short. The cold air it normally provides helps performance. If you do anything to it, remove the rain/snow flap behind the grille. (That turns it into a mild ram air setup on 87-91 models, as theirs aren't behind the grille
The "velocity stacks" are actually there to dampen the sound coming out from the intake. Note most cars have strange designs where the intake filters are - these are all to keep the sounds of the engine down.
460 is a good motor simple to work on and not as much maintaince as a diesel. Unless you are heavy hauling car haulers all the time you dont need a diesel.
ricochetey thank you! Some people just don’t get it
Although from this era the diesels were also low maintenance. Nowadays I don’t know if there is benefit to owning a diesel due to all the electronics and emissions systems
I live in the Midwest. Diesels do have better low end torque but where I live it gets too cold for that to be reasonable unless you have a business. Can't leave it outside for my workshift in the negatives without it gelling. I got the 460 instead.
Until you get to 1999 with the aftercooler the 460 is more powerful than the 7.3 diesel.
@HZB OcYpcWr'Ctwu Odzs from 91 to 99 anything you can do with a 7.3 you can do with a 460.
I have a 97 f350 xlt on a 5inch lift with 35 inch tires. I did this and holy cow! I got really curious and it does make a difference! The 5speed is loving the air flow.
♥️♥️♥️these trucks!!
The last years of the REAL TRUCKS ‼️‼️
I think the best trucks ever are the 460 ford f350 and the 7.3 powerstroke f350 all trucks in the 70s are cool too
The Air box inlet tube has a lip which hooks to the left at the front end where it passes through the front cowl / radiator support. Causing the inlet to be (side) draft. Take a hack saw to that sucker too. This lets air come straight in. That whole air tube setup is wretched. It starts out small. Gets larger. Bends several times. . Might be better off just taking it off all together.
I used a 7/8" hole saw and on the lower and sides of my airbox (dirty side of filter) I added about 7 new holes for air to get into the airbox, made a big difference and sound when you get on the pedal. Just make sure you do not get into deep water puddles:-)
Good one ‼️...
Now that's MY KIND OF ENGINEERING...
I did ran a dual in dual out high flow cat on my 1988 with a set of headers and Flowmaster muffler ran dual 2.5 inch Wich really woke her up. Intake only helps when you cure the constipation in exhaust. I know many people don't think the TB spacers are worthless but I found it really helped with throttle response.
I didn't notice a great difference after this mod, however I did some work on the ignition which did make a difference. First I replaced wires, MSD 8mm,then plugs, Motorcraft. Then put an extra 2 degrees of timing into it. Factory was 20 I took it to 12 with no signs of pinging on 87 pump gas. Finally a K&N filter in the stock air box, haven't tried it yet with the intake tube removed as I figured any gains maybe be negated by the hotter less dense air from the engine compartment. Now I'm seeing a solid 10 around town and 13 highway. That's with the air on hi.
cheyennedogsoldiers I'll have to look into doing that! Great info, each truck may change by circumstance of course
My dream truck
How the power? My 89 is a dog
@@arsenalgarage7767 sorry that should have been factory timing was 10.
@@jnetwork7159 power is good. Revs more freely and just feels more responsive.
The intake "tube" that goes from the air box to the front of the truck is a great part. It is a true factory cold air intake and is better then what comes in the Bronco's and F-150s. Purchase some 120' of DEI cool tape and wrap your intake to lower the amount of heat the tubs are soaking up. Also, K&N drop in replacement filters do good in these trucks. One thing I did on my C-350 is cut the elbow at the inlet side of the tube so fresh air could get pushed into the filter box as you drive down the street.
If you would like more info PM me.
Appreciate the info, will have to do that for sure!
It has far too many bends. Starts out as a not very large opening . Then gets larger. Then flat then large again. It's got a lip on the very front that hooks to the left ( driver's side). Making it sort of a side draft..Cut that off! Let the air come straight in.
I wish I understood this so I could do it to my 97 f250.
Hay man....whose idea was it to put a set of empty binoculars on an engine!!
EGR delete work awesome too I have a 460 and a 351 I did it to along with headers and an intake way better gas mileage and low end grunt
makes sense
Did the engine run rough at first after deleting egr?
@christianramirez4107 lil bit smoothened out pretty quick though
Dude, glad to see you have a channel. Would love to see more content!
So 2 years later, how are the modifications going?
Thanks man I got a 460 as well didnt have a clue it would help.
I have a 1991 F-150 with the 302 Windsor and I have the same airbox. You can cut it or you can just take it out. I leave mine in for car shows but take it out for that little boost. The front is heavy restriction but also where it connects to the airbox is another huge constriction. Once you open it up there's nothing to restrict the air from coming in. No lie the first time I drove after removing it I burned rubber and pissed my pants cause of the difference.
When these trucks were on the road in the 90's, that part was not considered a velocity stack. They are actually there to keep the noise down under throttle, especially when towing or going up an incline. 90's model Ford Rangers had a removeable insert in the duct from the airbox to the TB. I believe it was Truckin' magazine that performed the same mod and gained 20 HP on a dyno pull.
Remove the intake baffles and open up the airbox inlet . Also you can put lighter advance springs in the distributor, Better plugs and wires along with a Red MSD cap and a MSD 6AL ignition box instead of the stock motorcraft ignition module. Your throttle response , torque , HP and mileage will increase . Noticed gains in performance in fact
Gorilla Cookies how would the 6AL work with the distributor setup? It would be used in place of the stock ignition? Would that be a plug and play type of setup? I have already added new wires and plugs, and a new stock replacement distributor. Not MSD but it's new and works well.
Did same to mine drove from northern MI to south of Ft. Wayne, IN. I got 14 running 70-75. 460/5spd/4x4
🤣🤣🤣
MI Backwoods nice I got a 1993 f250 460 5 speed 4x4 not that bad on fuel likes to go 80 mph👍🏻 easy
It acts as a venture and should cool the air. The maximum the engine can intake is less then the size of the smaller holes, no restriction, just colder, so denser and more 02 for more power.
38 thumbs down for people who prefer airflow restricted to their engines. I am guessing they are a big fan of restrictor plates in Nascar also.
I done this mod to my 1990 Ford E350 with a 460 and I for sure seen a increase I didn't believe it until I tried it but I'm a Believer now... thanks for the good information
I got a 94 460 as well but a single cab. Thanks for everything dude!!
Ditched my 460 boat anchor for a 24 valve cummins diesel with a VE pump. I'm getting 26mpg! That's the best way to get better MPG out of a 460.

My 96 F250 with a 460, E4OD, 2WD long bed gets around 8MPG, so considering the 4WD and 1 ton your original MPG didn’t sound too bad to me, but I feel your pain. Low teens MPG would be tolerable. I’ll give your mods a try.
I’ve had both of the diesels & I can say that the MPG is way better, but after having both it would be nice to have a f350 460 that is a good runner just for the power not the mpg I’ve got an idi for mpg that’s my daily.
Ive a 90 f250 4×4 with auto. Just added RV Cam and smog delete... was getting 11 w/1500 lb load.. going to check my mileage and then do this and EGR delete.. saw video by Bad Tree Productions on Holley Sniper bolt on.. seemed to be a good power add..
That shape you removed only created back pressure and if it did accelerate gases ,the effect was defeated by the back pressure
Velocity stacks are backwards to the intake sound dampeners those "air horns" really are. Velocity stacks would be the big end towards the air filter and bigger than the intake side so the air is slightly compressed going into the manifold.
I'm going to get a 1992 F350 that is 460 gas as well. Thanks for the knowledge and ideas!
Youl getter better gas millage if you take the led out of your shoe

Cut air box a inch under the filter if it's a square like panther 4.6l. I'd if these are same or not. But engine is a big air pump. Faster and colder in, faster less restricted out, more everything better.

Roxie zwell: clean up port the heads mainly exhaust. Thinner head gasket. Compression needs to be minimum 9.1 max 9.5
.480-500 lift cam 196-212 duration @.50... good flowing exhaust.

Cam installed straight up" no advanced. 2" headers , dual 3" no cats 4 mufflers.. performer rpm intake with 750 quick fuel carb. C6 with Gear vendor dana 70 ,3.73 and 32" tires.
Mild performance gas motors with lots of mid range torque gearing get usually the best mileage around 1500-2300 rpm
How's the rv running? I got a 94 rv on an e350 chassis... About to do this mod, as this is not the first time I've had it suggested to me to increase mpg. Next up, Headers.
Those air horns double as binoculars when needed, Ford came out with a service bulletin about it.
need air flow, less restriction in & out, cold air, decent tune up.
Recently did this to our Airstream E350 and noticed some better airflow for sure. But I have also noticed that it is idling higher than it did before, or maybe it's just louder and I'm imagining it. Not concerned with gas mileage to be honest, I know to expect dogshit mileage, I would just like it to perform its best and be reliable doing so. It definitely feels like it's restricted in some regard, and I believe it is the smog system doing so.
Great Video, thanks for the tips, if you could change the jetting on the intake you could fine tune it after the exhaust upgrades.
Go open air cleaners. U can buy 2 and use the pipes that go to the box.
Wouldnt that be noisy and not pass inspection down at the DEQ station?
@@geraldhenrickson7472 no they wouldn't care what air filter u are running and it's a 460 U are going to hear it run
Notice when he drove the over drive was not turn off. Doing mods on this is fine, but if you live where you have to have a EMISSION TEST your screwed. I own a 92 F-250 460 stock, my brother has a 95 F-250 460 pipes K&N remove most emission crap. The 92 stock preforms better, runs better then the 95 with all the mods on it. Not all ways a good idea to remove engine management parts, and spend lots of money on aftermarket crap
I've got an emissions test. Never had issues with stuff like that. Yours must be far more strict
Beautiful truck bro
Appreciate it!
The best thing to do would be a K&N intake. A direct fit one if possible.
Those velocity stacks are useless unless they air going directly into the intake runner. Every bend is a restriction so a velocity stack right before a 90 degree bend is canceling itself more or less. Heck put a turbo grind cam in it and a turbo on 7 pounds of boost and keep your foot out of it and you'll increase economy due to the added power.
The new 7.3 Godzilla is the modern day 460 and it's supposed to get better gas mileage.
ATX-CVPI I’ve heard some preliminary numbers from owners and right off the bat with a light foot, not even broken in they are turning 13/14 mixed. Which is respectable.
if you plan on towing, ive often heard these engines are really hard to keep cool with electric fans. most dont provide the kind of air flow you supposedly get with belt driven.
I'll definitely have to look into it more on this truck, but I have had them on other trucks and vehicles with no problem. I think the issue most people run into is not using high enough cfm fans/not using a shroud.
@@arsenalgarage7767 yeah. Same thing I was thinking but I don't know how much belt driven moves so I have to give them the benefit of the doubt.
Tow with a 460 you're funny. Mine could barely tow an empty two horse trailer.

the cones are for noise control only. did this mod 5 years ago. makes the roar of the engine louder on the intake side.(can hear it sucking air). its a big bore with a longish stroke and no variable valve timing and no real way to tune.. get use to ten mpg.
Better fuel mileage will come if you replace the MAP SENSOR located by the heater core on the firewall

I feel on average I see 1-2 mpg, sometimes more. Not huge gains, but the power I feel like I've gained from it is well worth it for a free modification. It really did feel like it freed it up, another thing I did recently is I actually took off the cat and added a magnaflow muffler. That made a world of difference in power for me. I'm not sure on mpg yet. But the great thing is if you don't like the intake mod, you can go to the junkyard and find another one for a few bucks!
Anybody who says they get more than 10 in one of these trucks without a maf conversion either cant do math or is straight up lying. These trucks consistently get anywhere from 8 to 11 mpg. Do not do electric fsns if you plan on towing already tried it and went back to mechanical. Most mods you will notice will come from exhaust, doing a maf conversion kit and installing a water meth kit. Anything past that the engine needs to be opened up and alot of money needs to be spent to fix the garbage heads and comp ratios these engines have
ANYBODY that has the air restrictions like this guy,, TAKE IT OFF, it will reduce air flow, restricts power HP Torque, and will improve MPG,
If you want GOOD mpg on these big trucks run a single exhaust system, at the headers, single tubing 2.5 exhaust back to the end of the cab and than run 3" all the way back,

Differences in the 460.
@@skipstein744 yup because of emissions the 460 got tuned down a little every year from 91 to 97 most of it was in the exhaust and air intake they really restricted it to the point some people claim just opening up the intake and straight piping a 97 will add like 80-100hp although I'm not sure how true that part is.

Remove the PCV replace it with a breather . You don't want dirty air looped into your top end without being filter 1st.. or at least run a hose before the filter . REMOVING PCV INCREASE POWER AND MILAGE AND ALOT LESS WEEAR ON THE TOP END . WHY WOULD ENGINEERS DO THAT ., SERVICE IS WHERE THE MONEY AT . FOR CAR DEALERS. Mass Air Flow, that'll do the trick.
How do you set that up?
I've head of people using the MAF system from an old 5.0 mustang. EFI 460 are all SD except for a few that were sold in CA I guess
@@ssimon64 1996 and 1997 California 460 trucks that were under 10k gross weight got the MAF system, which is why you never see it in the F-Super Duty ones.

Get in the dash and take some pliers and Smash the check engine light. Works until about 2012. Guy I knew did it to his 2012 Honda and the car wouldn't start once he crushed the check engine led. It was very common for people remove dash lights or block it out or something. We got rid of inspection stickers. Because only state troopers could issue tickets for them here. It's a state requirement not local. All they did was check horn and lights windows for tint and cracks. Whether it was a dealership or a quick lube the sticker is always blank on the back. No one ever filled them out ever. Have illegal tint give the kid a jiffy lube a 20 dollar tip get a sticker slapped on and tint pass sticker and off you go. They were only 5 dollars but much cheaper to give them a 20 keep the change then to fix a cracked windshield or something. And maybe 30 percent of time did anywhere actually check the lights and horn. If you looked like a working man you were in and out. No emissions laws in Mississippi we remove our cats and put real exhaust in. Every car or truck I've removed the Cats on a nice jump in mpg. I'd rather get better gas mileage and better performance then to burn more gas and be less responsive. Open carry, car is extension of your home except locked compartments. So you can ride with one in the chamber legally. Just like your house, no emissions laws, no state inspection stickers anymore, and fuck roe Vs Wade, our heartbeat abortion laws. I'd never tell a woman what to do with her body. But it's not her body she wasn't born with the baby inside her. It's just a clump of cells it's not life. All you are is a clump of cells heart bone, organs etc. If your not a life then ok it's not a life. Rape and incest make up less the 1 percent of abortions yearly. And I'll Concede incest genetic DNA problems. Or any health issue that threaten the mother. But for rape it's a very horrible horrible thing to happen to someone. I have two sonograms in my hands which one is the baby of rape? Play god because of that you die because your dad was a piece of shit there are other options. New life has few friends but plenty of enemies. 3 guaranteed freedoms. Life, liberty, pursuit of happiness. No stipulations life is protected. At conception it's not your body anymkre. That clump of cells is the same clump of cells as you are. It can't survive without mother. Babies though elementary school would die if not for the mother. They can't take care of themselves either. We need one definition of life. If I ran a red light as she's turning into the abortion clinic it's murder times 2. If I kill her in her house the forensics are going to find 2 separate DNA samples. They would know two people were involved. It's it's not a life why isnt it a clump shower instead of baby. Men get no say she can keep the baby and force child support or she can get a abortion up till and birth you can have post birth abortions 2 weeks. They keep them alive until they have patients lined up for the organs then the baby dies. The rich people get the organs for there kids. Listen to the governor of Virgina on camera say we will resuscitate the baby, we will keep the baby warm and comfortable and then mother and Dr will have a discussion on to do next. This is infanticide. If a man decided two weeks later he wants a abortion be goes to prison for murder and even prisoners are rough on him. For women you can habe your baby aborted two weeks after birth for organ harvesting and it's health care. Safe legal and rare is no being told is health care. Name anythint a man can do a women can't? A man can't start a heart beat of a human and be cheered as a hero. Unless woman are born with embroys from birth and she has 20 toes 20 fingers penis and vagina's, multiples of the same organs. Teeth etc. Rant over shit really pisses me

Your losing a minimum of 2mpg on that tread and flex of tire. E rated tires dont often look as cool but will provide a stiffer tire and wear less.
Gas mileage with the 460, Ha Ha.
I have the very same truck, same year, crew cab, 4x4. It has a 5.9 Cummins going in it to help with the economy cause there is no way this truck is gonna get economy with this gas engine.
Yeah that sounds like the better way to lol
I have a 96 460 with 300k miles and can’t decide on rebuilding the engine and getting it built nice or p-pump 12v swapping it. Any advice? I would sell the engine to buy the 12v. If I chose that route
@@codywells3968 Depends what you use the truck for. If you use it everyday, and not go to far, I would build the 460. If you go longer distances and haul weight, then the Cummins would be the way to go. Horsepower can be had with both engines, depending on how much you want to spend. Me, I am all about towing so the Cummins gets the nod. I got tired of watching the fuel gauge fall as I drove with the 460.
@@oby-1607 it is amazing to watch it. You know nobody believes me about the gas mileage. Most people are use to cars and smaller v8 trucks or diesels. Until I show them. Look now and let's go 50 miles round trip to town and back and look where it's at. Even babying it. Wanna run AC another gallon easy to run that.
I blew a head gasket on mine, I choose to rebuild it. The bottom end was still solid shape. Had the heads reworked all new valves pushrods seals etc. New timing chain. Water pump was gone impellers gone. When the coolant ruptured it shot hot coolant on my alternator and burned that up. And the radiator had a hole in it. New radiator, new negative plate inside rotor cap. New copper plugs and wires. Besides power steering and oil pump the top end and accessories are new. About a year ago, then about 4 weeks ago fuel pump went out. My fault though for neglecting for fuel filters. What a difference with the new fuel pump and filters it was like when the top end was rebuilt could feel the new power. It ran so much better with the new fuel pump. And quieted down the motor alot. I didn't realize how restricted the fuel was. The engines are bullet proof if you take care of them. 220k and the bottom end was solid still. I only run non ethanol gas unless I'm out of town and have to run premium. If I don't have non ethanol I run mmo in the gas
@@codywells3968 diesel engine cost 2k to buy requires 1k in parts to swap. fuel is 70 cents more a gallon currently. parts for repair are more.
How much did you get it for I want one
I assume you're talking about the truck, I actually got this truck on a trade for a different truck
Yeah that's a nice truck
They look like binoculars
can anybody tell me what the function of the small hose underneath the velocity stack is??
Crankcase breather
@@v908 thanks
NOT crankcase breather (which attaches to a PCV like 'filter' in the lower part of the airbox}. This hose supplies filtered air to the idle air circuit, which enters the intake manifold right below the throttle butterflies.
