Update: There has been a big firmware update post-launch (that should improve low light performance and autofocus) since shooting the video for review 👍
Great review. This pretty much told me everything I need to know, particularly the comparisons with the GoPro and the Mate 20. That accessory mount seems scary fragile, though.
@@Premises187 But I think it eats SD space a little small from 4K. For example, with 64 GB SD card, Osmo Pocket says it can record like 80 minutes but when I switch to 2.7K, it says 90 minutes. Not a big difference.
I am happy with the new firmware which is released today. The autofocus is quicker now and they added pro mode to the device and AFC/AFS mode. Also the face recognizion improved and cine-like colour mode is added. Seems like a new improvement. I just downloaded the new firmware.
Before reading all the comments - so I may be repeating what others have already said - you can have a full width display in the screen if you want, it's in the settings, but then everything is even more tiny than before. Having said that, it's not bad for framing, but useless for focus - in which respect DJI need to do more tweaks. Second comment - the "follow" mode in settings isn't so much to do with tracking as you implied, but with gimbal control. FPV allows the camera head to move (but with damped motion) in any direction, so you can have a crooked horizon if you want, or you can point the camera up at the sky or down at your feet, or you can pan. "Follow" mode allows panning and down/up but not rotary movement, so the horizon will always be straight. "Tilt locked" mode allows panning but not up / down nor rotation, so the horizon is always straight and the camera is always pointing horizontally forward. Recentering allows you to set the camera flat in respect of both the horizon and up/down, so if you want to walk along with the handle at (say) 45 degrees but the camera head pointing ahead, get the handle at that angle that's comfortable (and inconspicuous) then select recenter. Lastly, the slider at the right of the screen allows you to change the down/up angle of the gimbal relative to the handle, so if you have tilt lock on, you can have it locked other than flat, so you can walk along with the camera pointing more towards the ground, and fixed at that angle, if you want, or skywards. I think it's important to stress that the GoPro has basic stabilisation but cannot hold a horizon straight on its own, nor lock the tilt axis. Stabilisation isn't just a matter of avoiding wobble. Also the GoPro lacks the tracking features. Furthermore, the Osmo doesn't care whether it's night or day, it will still stabilise just as well, whereas the GoPro relies on reasonable light for its electronic system to work properly. Anyway, good review, thanks.
Great review, but it grinds my gears how every reviewer states the GoPro has a fish eye look, since the hero 5 you can use linear, with no warp on it whatsoever, and regarding the pocket screen facing you, you can use your P20 Pro for the screen up to 10 Meters away !!
I’d love to get my hands on one to review, there’s something about the shape though... I love perfectly symmetrical things... stabilisation looks unreal 👍🏻
Good review. As for losing the phone adapter, you can simply turn it around if you're not using it, saves taking it out and replacing with the blanking plate. Also believe that the Charging Case will include a storage area for them.
Both are excellent, and likely meant for a different target audience. The GoPro is considered an "Actioncam," the DJI Osmo Pocket, not so much! Plus, the fish eye lens effect from the GoPro can easily be corrected with most moderate video editors with a simple click or two these days. Can't beat the ruggedness and the all-weather design either of the GoPro, but at the cost of overall sound quality (IMO) w/o a dongle and a separate sound recorder. I own BOTH of these, but my favorite? The 2016 (yes, 2016) Sony FDR-X3000!! The video quality is amazing, its optically stabilized and the sound quality is top notch. The kicker though, is its odd design and that it's only water-resistant out of it's waterproof housing...and when there, the muffled sound. ***We can only wish for, or dream about, the possible future...that PERFECT camera...the utopia of Actioncams---> A rugged, FULLY WATERPROOFED, 100% OPTICALLY-STABILIZED actioncam that shoots super-sharp 4K at 60fps (without ANY lens flair!), at 100mbits/sec or more with a 1-inch sensor (infinity focus is fine!), optically-stabilized 1080p at 240fps, PLUS have exceptional, clear sound w/o a dongle or need for a separate sound recorder, and has an adequate heat sink so that it DOESN'T overheat...and the files don't require a monster computer to edit the files in post!! Talk about Utopia!!
3yrs later I'd be happy to say there's now the Insta 360 one rs , check's all the boxes 🤔👌. $300 on Amazon for the 4k version, can get a 360 adapter lense and a 1" sensor 5.7k lenses well, insanity I tell ya.
Thanks for the review. I noticed that there was a loss of sync in the audio. Also just wondering what happens if you use the Osmo pocket upside down to get very low angle shots. Thanks in advance.
You placed the OP in its case back to front. The larger end of the case is for the gimbal end and the hole in the fastening strap is for your mobile device adapter to fit through 😉
on the go pro u can change the setting so u dont get that fish eye u can put it into linear and its still wide but no fish eye its awesome little camera.
Does this camera also have that typical DJI problem where it demands you register the device with your personal information, or else it will stop working? The DJI Pocket 2 has this problem.
For me it’s all about ease of editing or sharing. I have a Sony fdrx3000. Great camera but to edit 128gb of card on a 16gb iPad...its a no. How easy is the pocket to share videos? Any editing options whilst linked to the phone?
If you uploaded the video in 4K 30p then the video is 4K 30p. Changing the frame rate in camera to 4k 60p wont play back at 60p in a 30p rendered video. Any difference you see is caused by a increase in shutter speed from 1/30th to 1/60th (assuming full open shutter otherwise it's 1/60th to 120th with a 180 degree shutter) that's something im sure you could do in the settings. To really see the benefit of 60p we'd need to see the 60p in a separate video set to 60p or it used as 2x slow-mo on a 30p timeline.
Thanks for the helpful review, we've been filming with a gopro for a few years, so interesting to contemplate the pro's and cons. Think the gopro just has it but the osmo size is seductive.
Is it true that you need it connected to your mobile phone all the time for it to work? I’m planning on going up mountains and fells were I won’t have internet connection
its hard for me to chose which one of these cameras is better. i feel like they were both produced with two entirely different purposes. Granted, gopros have become a staple to vloggers, i still dont think its possible to "Compare" them. they both produce great footage. the dji is smaller and more compact, but is EXTREMELY limited. where as the gopro can be attached to virtually any object, and will work in water. for someone specifically looking for a point and shoot camera to cover spontaneous footage, i think the dji wins. but if youre looking for an all around can do all camera. the gopro is untouchable.
Actually connecting it to you phone will allow you to access a few more options through the Mimo app, including a Pro mode offering 24fps. Maybe the will build that ability directly into the device without requiring a phone in the future.
My only problem with osmo pocket is that you can't change batteries. You have to charge the whole thing again. If it's meant for vlogging then they should've added an option to change batteries man. That's the only thing that's putting me off from buying this. What are your thoughts? Great review btw!
This thing sure seems like the perfect device for filming a concert if you've got somewhat decent seats .. But the audio concerns me. What kind of DAC and mic is in that thing? All of the sample audio I've heard from this thing sounds terrible on youtube..
I have a question and please answer me. If I decide to buy a pocket camera 4k 1st 2nd or doesn't matter gen, can I transfer the pictures and the videos from it to my smartphone laptop or tablet? Thank you
Quad Damage FPV I've just bought the Osmo and have put my FeiyuTech a1000 gimbal on ebay. If you dont use a gimbal all the time on you're camera the Osmo is the way to go. The problem with gimbals like the FeiyuTech is the size and when you are out and about they are very noticeable and make the camera stand out. I use a Panasonic GX8 with a Leica 14 to 50mm lens and a Panasonic GX80 with a Lumix 14 to 42mm lens. Both work well on the gimbal but its the size of the whole kit that I dont like.
Old video, I know, but I'm seriously considering one of these, rather than the newer models. They're a great price now and even better if you're happy to buy second-hand or refurbished. Thanks for the review! 🙂👍
There are lots of things OP can't do mainly due to its durability and non-waterproof. People may argue there is a waterproof housing coming out, but doesn't know how it will affect the quality of the footage yet. For vlog, GoPro can do it, Casey has done it. The fisheye can't be corrected in post. As for audio, both OP and GoPro suck. If you choose OP, be prepared to buy lots of other accessories. Otherwise go for Gopro at least for this generation of both products. I can see the 2nd generation of OP surpassing some of the low tier DSLR already.
is there an accessory to that gives a wide angle view similar to Action camera? I like the wide angle view for travel videos. Particularly for those walking around videos.
Hey, what’s peoples view on getting one of these now? They’re a lot cheaper as the pocket 2 is out. Is it still worth buying ? (Summer 2021) I’ve recently got a DJI drone, and need this or similar for any handheld, b roll and places where I can’t fly. I really like this cam but not sure if to buy now the 2s out? Can’t afford a lot so 2nd hand one of these? Or wait? Cheers and spot on review!
At last, someone speaking UK English about the Osmo Pocket. You mentioned anti-flicker, does that mean it shoots 4K 25fps? That’s the way I avoid flicker on my other two 4K Panasonic cameras, my LX15 and G80. And 4K 50fps for 2x SloMo. I’ve heard talk of 48fps (2x 24fps) which supports auto-tracking where 50 doesn’t but it could all be talk. I’m planning on getting an Osmo Pocket for my Birthday in January, unless I read too many bad things.
I been watching a ton of osmo pocket videos today and some of them compare to the hero 7 and other cameras and phones. I have noticed the osmo pocket is the darkest out of all of them. Do you guys also notice this. I am on the fence to buy one.
I like that blurred background in DJI's footage, but looks like it struggles with actual stabilization. Lack of waterproofness is a con too. Amazing how they managed to cram so much stuff up such a small device with a gimbal. Might be a beast in a generation or two
I have question for you, my Osmo pocket camera connected to iPhone took nice single picture and download on PC it looks very clean & OK, with very same picture made movie, use movie maker program & played on then it shows only on same picture data text popped up “DCIM\100MEDIA\DJI-3501JPG” Is any way can correct or resets? Doesn’t shows data text. I have limited computer knowledges thanks your help.
What a wonderful review. - I like the sound better than the Hero. It's crisp, while the Hero sounded muffled. - I also noticed the Hero had some sort of beautify filter enabled because a red speck on your forehead was picked up by the Osmo Pocket 2, while the Hero didn't. - It's unfortunate the the Pocket 2 doesn't seem so rugged, while it's features are quite amazing. I found this video because we're looking to upgrade video and photo capturing from older low res shaky phones. When the 720p looks like 480p on top of UA-cam compression; yeah, it's time.. I've already got mine. The micro SD card slot is so deep inside that I can't insert or remove the card without a tool. Even the tip of my fingernails don't reach so deep. I think it's defective, because yours looks normal. I can use anything small enough to access it, though.
I just got osmo pocket and the hero 7 black when it came out. These two cameras are not suppose to compete together. Each has their own unique features and each is good. Its hard to decide between the two.
Not a fan of the focus hunting. It doesnt appear to be as robust as other units. With a wide field of view, the gopro is a winner for holiday vids. You can run, swim and have it all in frame.
Hi thanks for informative video l have just bought an original pocket and have found a surprising issue :- the actual camera head swivels about under its own weight when not switched on! Didn’t notice it on your video so wondering if mine is faulty? Thanks for any help Paul B
I think DJI osmo is great for vloggers. The video quality is pretty good. I don't know why one is comparing this with an action camera. Same price range doesn't mean they are rivals. Go pro is a proper action camera where as this one feels more like vlogging camera. price could have been a little more aggressive like around 200-250$ would be pretty good. Loved your video Tom great as always!

I just got osmo pocket and the hero 7 black when it came out. These two cameras are not suppose to compete together. Each has their own unique features and each is good. Its hard to decide between the two.
did u use any mic in that video ? 4:30
Not a fan of the focus hunting. It doesnt appear to be as robust as other units. With a wide field of view, the gopro is a winner for holiday vids. You can run, swim and have it all in frame.
did you tidy the desk before shooting the video,, mine is a mess lol
You can flip the phone adapter to facing inwards and store it that way and then you don't have to worry about losing it.
Hi thanks for informative video l have just bought an original pocket and have found a surprising issue :- the actual camera head swivels about under its own weight when not switched on!
Didn’t notice it on your video so wondering if mine is faulty?
Thanks for any help

no it is normal.
Thanks for reply!
you can get the full framing view by channing it in the settings
wow wait what?! What pup is that?
I think DJI osmo is great for vloggers. The video quality is pretty good. I don't know why one is comparing this with an action camera. Same price range doesn't mean they are rivals. Go pro is a proper action camera where as this one feels more like vlogging camera. price could have been a little more aggressive like around 200-250$ would be pretty good. Loved your video Tom great as always!
hi. is it possible to turn off the sound while recording video?
Great Video I would love to get one of these! hope you and your family are having an awesome Christmas season so far
Slightly off topic, what pub were you shooting in???
Hey Tom, do you use mobile phone's camera to record videos in youtube or some other cameras. It was top notch video
Do we have an option for attaching a One Plus phone (c type connector)?
Great review. Can`t activate it on my phone though. No usb c unfortunately :(
Great video. I'm looking towards the Osmo, mainly for bicycle videos.
You can adjust the screen to show a 16:9 image preview
How long the battery can be use?
nice watch! what's the model?
