it's a cool little device. I had the original mini and sold it but this one has more features in a smaller case with 3.5 inputs vs rca.
the red kaoss mini is square, is this a different version?

Yeah this is the 2nd version. It either came in a shrink wrap on cardboard or a grey box and seemed to be marketed towards djay-ing with an iPhone or iPod and not for musicians. Was a weird release
