Hey everyone I just found a better way to do this which reduces the overall loudness while performing the ring out. Turn up the input knob all the way on the EQ unit which will have the offending frequency light up sooner or with less actual volume. I found this to be useful while ringing out while there are other people in the venue during sound check. For example, the customers at the local bar will be less bothered if you ring out with less overall volume. Just keep your mixing board main faders down a bit to compensate. Then when you are all done, bring the EQ input back to unity and bring your master mixer faders back up. Go ahead and double check your work by pushing faders up nice and high to make sure you killed the feedback. This should help.
Great video! I just bought one of these to use for my cover band's live sound. We mostly play in small to medium sized venues with capacities ranging from 50 to 300 people and run our own sound with our own PA and have to mix from the stage. I bought this EQ along with a dbx AFS2 to help solve some feedback issues but I'm running into a small problem. Even with your latest tip of turning the input up and master faders down when ringing out a room, I'm finding that in order for the LEDs to light up and show what frequencies are feeding back, the volume still has to be insanely loud which naturally annoys the staff and patrons. Is there anything else you can think of to get around this? I've tried facing the FOH speakers in so they point right at the mics and that helped a little but with the speakers pointing in, it doesn't catch a lot of the room reflections that cause feedback once the speakers are pointing out again. And the feedback still has to be pretty loud before the LEDs light up. The dbx AFS2 works much better and catches the feedback at lower volumes but I'd also like to use the graphic EQ to further tweak some frequencies. Is there any way to increase the sensitivity on this thing?
@@guitarman3001 I'm glad to read your report. Unfortunately there is no way around making loud noises to ring out the system. The best you can do is first warn the people around you that you are going to make some brief loud noises so that you can solve them now and not have this problem during the performance. The other think I do is only push the faders up until I hear the feedback and immediately bring the volume back down, so that I am not hurting their ears for more than a second at a time. Good luck!
A buddy of mine just found one of these in his storage shed and told me to use it if I wanted, and I couldn’t decide what I wanted to use it for until I watched this video. Super straight-forward demonstration, thank you dude
One point everyone is missing is that this technique not only reduces feedback but it equalizes the room and the system together. It takes out the resonances of the room and compensates for the frequency response of the entire audio system. Doing this is essential to make a venue sound as good as possible. Some buildings ring (resonate) like crazy and will need more than just a few db of correction, don't be afraid of that, you are fixing a problem. I have done this for years after trying many other techniques and equipment, this technique beats them hands down. I don't have the nice EQ presented here, I use a cellphone app called Sepctroid to find the frequencies.
I have a behringer 1502 HD model for 5 years and didn't know how this works until I watch your video, thanks man for your good explanation 👍😀😀now I can fully use my EQ❤️🙏
Thanks Eric for the information, I appreciate it. We just added one of these to our church and it's getting the job done. All the best to you and yours.
You should ring out your mains first (with monitors turned off) and then visa-versa, ring out your monitors (now with the mains turned off) - especially if they're 2 kinds of speakers or speaker sizes. I like this unit, due to the fact it gives you an instant visual on where the offending frequencies are.
I know Im asking randomly but does any of you know a method to get back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly forgot my account password. I would love any tricks you can offer me!

Hi because of your video I got this one too. Feedback is my problem so got refurbished unit and hope in the coming days will try with my mixer and powered speaker. Thank you and Regards
I purchased the FBQ3102 last year and have been very happy with it. Now I am wondering if there is any noticeable difference between the FBQ3102 and the FBQ3102HD. I use mine primarily when playing vinyl LP's, so I am curious if it would be a worthwhile upgrade.....
Super helpful video here. I had heard about this technique but wasn't sure how to use it till now. I have a question, how do you connect your equalizer to your mixer? I am new to live sound engineering and I see some people talk about using the "insert" port while others output to the equalizer and then to the amp. Which do you use in this video and why?
Hi Eric thanks for this wonderful video...Just wanted to know how did you wire up the mixer - fbq - and the compressor together -- the chain...ins and outs....thanks in advance
The mixer has master inserts (in & out). So my MIXER signal goes ->out through the insert to the FBQ EQ unit in ->then out of EQ to COMPRESSOR in ->then back into the MIXER master insert in (same as return). Pretty simple circuit. Hope that helps.
This is more useful during live performances when you have monitors adding sound to the room. In a studio you normally use headphones instead of speakers for monitors, so this unit wouldn’t be helping except to help shape the overall tone of the mix.

I have a Peavey 10 channel mixer, a Peavey crossover, a Peavey feedback destroyer, one powered 12” monitor, two powered 15” speakers and two powered 18” subs and a bunch of xlr cables that are supposed to attach to everything. One problem though. I haven’t a clue as to where any of the cables go. Can anyone help?
Yeah instead of notching out a load of frequencies I'd just bring the volume down a bit and do a boost at 2.5kHz to get the vocals to cut through and maybe cut below 80Hz.
The simpliest trick to eleminate the feedback is to raise your Speakers higher than the mic... If you keep on pulling down those eq faders you just basically bringing down the volume or gain output the same way that is why you don't get the feedback but the loudness of mic is not present.. It's totally nonsense since you keep pushing the volume more on the mic mixer lols
I expected the LEDs to be more sensitive to help knock out feedback early, but they only light up when it's already an ear-splitting screech. Seems a bit of a useless feature, honestly...
Nathan McDaniel true. One thing you might try is to increase the signal to your eq unit and lower the output to maintain your end output. Maybe that would get you closer to what you want. Ringing out is typically annoying so do it when others are not around if possible.
“Ringing out” is something deaf sound guys did in the 90’s. Learn to listen and when you do you will probable want to throw that GEQ out. Certainly stop approaching the alignment of even simple sound systems in this way. This is literally an instruction manual for sound guys I hope you will never meet 😂 or even more so, become!

Dude just cut out all the presence out of his mix.
I know right! No one's talking that, everyone is appreciating him. WTF? 😂
Yeah instead of notching out a load of frequencies I'd just bring the volume down a bit and do a boost at 2.5kHz to get the vocals to cut through and maybe cut below 80Hz.
Bakit ang eq ko kpag tinodo ko ibaba lahat ng slider nya may feedback tpos biglang puputok yung capacitor ng tweeter
Quá hay
Really I want to know about
How to connect MULTIGATE PRO (model XR 4400) and setup with YAMAHA MGP 32X. Please I want to know help me.
How would you want the XR4400 to function in relative to yr P32X mixer??
Its best to get an auto-feedback eliminator
The simpliest trick to eleminate the feedback is to raise your Speakers higher than the mic... If you keep on pulling down those eq faders you just basically bringing down the volume or gain output the same way that is why you don't get the feedback but the loudness of mic is not present.. It's totally nonsense since you keep pushing the volume more on the mic mixer lols
Ya right, but some venues we cant just be raising Spk heights as we wish due to certain constraints imposed.
Or u can explain to me pls on a reply comment section, I have just like urs
I expected the LEDs to be more sensitive to help knock out feedback early, but they only light up when it's already an ear-splitting screech.
Seems a bit of a useless feature, honestly...
Nathan McDaniel true. One thing you might try is to increase the signal to your eq unit and lower the output to maintain your end output. Maybe that would get you closer to what you want. Ringing out is typically annoying so do it when others are not around if possible.
Yes, but unless you can instantly analyze the frequency of that screech, it's still rather useful.
FILL BACK WHERE'S YOUR MIC BESIDE THE SPEAKER
Just take your speakers away change your microphone brand
“Ringing out” is something deaf sound guys did in the 90’s. Learn to listen and when you do you will probable want to throw that GEQ out. Certainly stop approaching the alignment of even simple sound systems in this way.
This is literally an instruction manual for sound guys I hope you will never meet 😂 or even more so, become!
Good video good stuff.but please in future Try a script. Saying, urhm uuhhh uuuhh ahhhh after every 6 or 7 words is just difficult to listen to
