Just got an RTX desktop to replace my 2015 laptop at long last and while playing Control and Teardown with raytracing on has been cool, my favorite games as of late have all been super stylized and still run great on that same laptop. A great video, and it’s neat to see you discuss stuff around games rather than just the games themselves. Take care, and hoping more stuff like this gets easier to produce so we can get more of it. on my old boomer laptop (i3, 4gb ram, no gpu) id play in 360p to squeeze out every last frame
I'm a game dev, and I have to develop my games for lower spec machines, as my personal development rig isn't that good (Specs Below), however, I always aim to make sure my games run on as low spec a machine as possible.

Nice. I also feel that games made where you can run on low-spec computers, will also bring more people to play it because they may not be able to get a gaming pc.

Yeah, I wish I could run java minecraft better though, it's one of my favorite games and it sucks that I can't run it without my laptop overheating like crazy. Kind of sad honestly.

It's an interesting topic, however I don't think it'd just be the graphics to solve the issue, a lot of games could do with a lot more work into optimization, a lot of modern titles don't get enough time dedicated to ironing it out the best they can, they just go "yeah that'll run good enough" and leave it there until there's a mass report of issues, Spaghetti code is a fun mess that can normally be a huge culprit of issues, I recall once a game had a coding error that made the game perform worse for no particular reason, it just spewed a lot of errors behind the scenes that made the game struggle

I overall enjoyed the video and I agree with the topic, however there are a few issues with it.
A lot of what was mentioned mostly applies to 2d titles. From my experience with a low end system, almost all games with simple artstyles struggled to run, even when it looked like it shouldn't. It's really not just making a game in a simpler artstyles, but rather putting in a lot of work in optimization and testing on older hardware. And in many cases, it's just not really possible to actually optimize them for older hardware due to the engines and other things used. I know that you touched on this, but I feel like it should have had a bigger focus.
New demanding games do also need to exist. They are what really keeps pushing the technologies forward and introducing new things.
Also, there's quite a bit of misinformation in the video, especially around cryptocurrency, tho I definitely don't blame you as it's a deep and confusing subject.

Or take the Ross Scott approach and only buy old games, when they and the hardware needed to run them has dropped considerably in price!

Interesting video, I may write a more comprehensive comment at some point, as there’s a few things I disagree with - here’s just 1 thing I’d say though :
The payment opportunities available for smart phone game developers and publishers are not conducive to making good games economically viable. Most mobile phone “gamers” expect games to be “free” and want to play them on the toilet and don’t want to engage properly. Most mobile phone publishers want micro transactions, they’re obviously very deleterious to gaming quality/fairness etc. but they make way more money. Few people would pay even £1 for a mobile game outright, and if they can actually enjoy a free game they will likely never give the devs a penny, so it has to be busted ass so people buy shit. It’s not 2009 and you’re not gaming on an iPod touch, not enough people will pay for the ability to play a mobile game outright.
Some people will take issue that a don’t validate mobile phone gamers. I believe gatekeeping is sometimes valid and definitions are important, won’t say much more for now. Playing games doesn’t make you a gamer, I own a couple 40k models, I’m not a wargamer or modeller. I’ve mowed grass, I’ve never been a gardener.
I also believe you’re vastly overestimating how few people don’t own current hardware - I legit don’t mind you, but if there wasn’t a mass of paying customers, they wouldn’t be making games for new hardware.
Games cost more than ever to make, and (I believe disproportionately) publishers DEMAND more revenue than ever. For this reason we won’t see any change in smart phone game payment structure/game design as it pertains to ability/likelihood for customers to pay.
I also don’t agree that having a remotely expensive phone is a necessity, even to live in a 100% modern way, as obviously what you said is true, it’s expected and required for many jobs even. I got my IPhone SE for £80 like 4 years ago, still works, despite apples efforts to slow the thing down with updates, which is something they absolutely have been proven to do by the way. Can it play many demanding mobile games? Perhaps, but probably not. That’s not a necessity though. A £40 smartphone from eBay is still a smartphone you can use for any so called necessary activity. It’s just that a 7 year old, used phone, with no contract/sim installed at time of purchase, with pay as you go or some cheap contract arranged by the user, cannot game, multi-media or anything as well as one costing £1400. It won’t affect your getting a job though. 😂
I would also say there’s good games basically any system can play - games made for their specs, usually OLD games. Don’t have a PS5? Not even PS4? Play 360 or PS3 then lol 😂 that’s what I do. NFS Shift £2 😮 COD £2😮 Oblivion £11. People just don’t want to do this. It’s an asshole opinions I know but to be able to play good games that run right at all is a bit of a luxury, some people are dead blind or dead or have bigger things to worry about. Nothing wrong with just sticking to cheap old shit. My most expensive games for original Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3 are not 1/3 the cost of a new game at retail or digitally. 90% of my games for these systems cost less than the best digital sale would ever give you them for! I suggest people make their peace with playing old stuff. I believe objections to this approach are equally as dumb as the reasons why people may not play new games with “bad” graphics, doesn’t look like God of War Ragnarok, looks goofy etc. You will be able to play many of these new games one day, for cheap, and they will be basically just as good. Only multiplayer games will suffer.
I appreciate the video especially because so few people have said this type of stuff. My criticism and my disagreements (there’s more!) aren’t intended to debooonk you or anything nasty. Gotta say it as text doesn’t indicate tone, well it can I guess if you’re not illiterate like I am now.
I would go a step further than you, I believe we need BAD graphics, genuinely bad, just with good art design. I believe if Morrowind came out in 2023 it would still be the best RPG of its type by a country mile, even if it didn’t use a modern retro art style or wasn’t cel shaded. 2002 ass mud textures, basically no lighting etc don’t detract too much from the gameplay. It’s not necessarily conducive for selling a game, it looking like it’s 20 years old in the worst way possible, but it would be undeniably the best for allowing devs to MAKE THE GAME GOOD. Though I’m sure even just what you suggest would result in great improvements. I guess my ultimate game that COULD actually exist (but never will) would be Morrowind or KOTOR but it would look like Grow Home or Graven or Ion Fury or something in current year. Naturally I’d prefer Morrowind to look like whatever 2022’s Crisis would be but that just couldn’t be done.

The increasingly bloated textures of modern games intended to cater to the very small number of people who actually have the amount of physical space for a monitor or multi-monitor setup to notice the difference between 2K, 4K, and 8K is, frankly, ridiculous, not helped by the fact that the development of larger storage drives has stalled due to the half-decade-long transition from HDDs to SSDs, so most computers have been stuck with 500 GB to 2 TB of internal storage for at least five years now, but things load faster at least, while games continue to get larger and larger, and much of it is because of all the damned eye candy that the “form over function” crowd keeps shelling out money for. It’s like devs don’t want you to have more than ten games installed at once (maybe that IS the point, to push people towards a “games as a service” model), and it was one thing when the ultra-hi-def textures were optional downloads early on, but they’re not anymore. Annoyance with this, and the refusal of my superiors to consider alternatives, is one of a number of reasons why I no longer work in the industry.

No. Mobile gaming is pretty much a joke because of the Google Play store looking more like a septic tank than a store. Even if there's gold in there, you don't wanna go looking for it. It's just not happening.
You don't gotta like the play store or even the apple app store but slamming a game just because it's on mobile should be left in the past. A good game is a good game, regardless of the system it's on. Mobile games rely on word-of-mouth way more than any pc or console game since it does have to exist next to games like Clash of Clans and it's one thousand clones.
Games like Monument Valley are delightful and I'm glad I was able to play them even if they were on mobile.

Snark aside, There are plenty of games that are made with the purpose of being played on a mobile device. A great example is stuff like "a lost phone" and "Sara is Missing" or "Simulacra" where you're actively investigating someone else's phone. I prefer playing these games on mobile because it just feels right for all the same reasons I wouldn't want to play Hypnospace Outlaw on a Nintendo Switch.

Game that sucked me in the most in the last few years was The Quest. It looks like actual sh*t. 2006 Java mobile badly hand drawn low-res semi-realistic renderings of people and objects. Thing is people gotta be OPEN to playing games that don’t look like the current crop of AAA games. It would honestly be good if you didn’t even need a great arty style to hide the crude graphics. Graphics being better in isolation basically always helps immersion, but on balance I think graphical fidelity is one of the least important things. I know this after years of being a PC elitist, with like 0 good games using my specs to the max, then going back to console collecting. But people have never known what’s good, they’ve never known what they ought to do want, can’t fix that. I reckon most people will always think they’d prefer to play crap shiny games like COD Vanguard over some fantastic indie game or some great Xbox 360 exclusive.

That’s what I do. Nobody is stopping me from playing a £60 Xbox and £3-25 games. I’m a collector so demand good condition. Someone who just wants to game, to play QUALITY games can do so very well for very little money. We’re on UA-cam, everyone here at least, can research what old games are good, and just play them instead of being mad they can’t buy a £400-500 console and £50 games. Just be a patient gamer. No need to play on a smartphone or anything dumb like that.
