Love the Yakuza games, they absolutely pull it off , although there are a few spots which makes you sink a lot of time to complete like the real estate missions or the hostess club management.
Still, the game's side quests are well presented and quite often hilarious too. And lastly there are some moments that choke you up, like the ending to Yakuza 6 and Like a Dragon.

Finally, someone had to say it. The only time people had the patience to play through 100 hour games was years ago when the content was actually enjoyable and engaging, nowadays the gaming industry has been conditioned into pumping out 100 hour games which feature nothing mind numbing filler which no normal person would have the patience to sit through. It getting completely ridiculous.

Very much agree. Most AAA games get dead boring by hour 15 to 20 and I have about 80 more hours of this? No thank you. Plus that means around 6+ hours of cut scenes/text. When is the last time you watched a 6+ hour movie??? I remember when we got Tetris for our Nintendo back in 1990. Simple, fast, no real story and we played it for years...where has this sense of innovation gone?

Good stuff! I will say, I mostly agree but I consider RDR2 one of the much more well-done examples of the “really long open world game” category and I don’t find myself feeling as empty as I may in many other games of a similar nature

    • @slyaspie4934

Yeah RDR2 is a slower paced in general, but isn't filled with boring collectathons or grindy repetitive missions that just feel like busy work (except for some of the challenges but you can ignore them), I found the open world itself very relaxing and if you just follow the main storyline missions, yeah it's still a long game but with a good mix of mission types to hold your interest as well as the amazing story filled laughs and tears.
Personally I think any Ubisoft game would have been a better example

Red Dead Redemption 2 doesn't have annoying side content shit though. You can play through the story and just through the story, no bullshit filler. It will still take a long time but I found it deeply enjoyable.
All the side quests are also tailor made and good. There's no bullshit to collect, every side missions has good scripting and story moments to it.

That's very true, *BUT* the story does have some filler.
There are some missions that could've been done off camera, like, when you save Sean or Trelawny etc. Instead, everything that happens to the story, even the most uninteresting little things, have _you_ participate in it.
And yet even then, RDR2 is mostly a unique open world game, and not similar to your generic "ubisoft" open world. One of the very few open world games were I can't get bored of it, and that's what makes this game truly something special.

Not sure if you’ll read this but rdr2s length is really essential to how the story is told it you fall in love with the gang for like 20 hours so them falling apart feels that much more tragic. it may seem daunting but there’s not a ton of filler most of the “rockstar open word stuff” is optional some missions do drag on but it’s definitely worth it for the plot alone
It made me “feel” more then anything I’ve ever played it’s just incredible I completed it in 2 weeks thats with all the side missions and hours of hunting which is a lot don’t get me wrong but it’s not any more time consuming then you make it

I feel that like books and movies video games can be any length and have value. If someone won't play pikuniku because it's short they are doing themselves a disservice and should play pikuniku but even though I play short games and love them like pikuniku and wandersong I still prefer long games.
Yakuza 0 ( and most of the series) is about 20-30 hours long for just the main story but my time is usually 80 hours due to the fact that everything side mission and mini game felt worth doing. I played every persona game and the story and combat kept me playing thru the long length. If the game is good and engaging people can play for however long the developer can keep it going.
Fallout 4 wasn't fun because the design wasn't made to be good for long just to be long. The settlement feature was just an endless mission mode that never felt like you were not achieving anything If that stopped at only 30 minutes that would still be 30 minutes wasted. Bad features and gameplay stay bad not matter how short or long it is but if they made the settlement feature amazing the I wouldn't care how long it is.
Love the video and keep saying what you feel.

Really liked the discussion. Would like to point out that, while it does depend from person to person, the less fluff a game has, usually the better designed, and consequently better, it is.
Though there is a decent section that usually warrants a lot of playtime, namely "postgame games" like Diablo 2 and 3, games in which the fluff is the whole point, like Pokémon (there are around 1000 of these buggers) or even lifestyle games, those being MMOs, fighting games, etc. These can be played a single time or maybe even take years of playtime, if you want to do everything that they offer.
Regarding single-player content though, I also really prefer games around the 7-10h mark, with the exception being Pokémon, maybe? The social aspect is part of the reason that I like spending so much time on them, but usually I'm trying out different combinations, catching a shitload of the lil' bastards, collecting things, customizing stuff, etc.
Either way, there are good arguments for games being lengthier, but your time with them relies on how much you like them.
...which seems really dumb to say, but if the game is unable to reel you in, then you won't _want_ to stay for the long haul.
Still think that I'd love Hollow Knight a lot more if it didn't take 6/7 hours to make me interested.

Having played it recently i believe that gta 4 shows this game length phenomenon very well
The main game with Niko Belic as the protagonist has more than 90 MAIN missions without checkpoints which adds to the occassional road block missions that will need a few tries to get done.
The two dlcs being ballad of gay tony and lost and the damned have a quarter of these levels being 26 and 22 respectively. Not only does the dlc fix a lot of jank and cahnge the overall atmosphere (the main story still slaps) but they feel a lot more short and sweet and dont make you get that burnout from the dark depressing tone that the main game does. The dlcs also give another perspective amd help to expand the story without being more of the same dark and gritty story

(As a precursor to my comment, I do think we definitely need more variety in game length. Having a good mix of shorter and longer games with a variety of graphical styles is a must. I like longer games with good stories personally, but I also enjoy a good quick game from time to time as well.)
I 100% recommend continuing RDR2. The story itself is worth the play time. You don’t have to do any side quests, and the vast majority of the main quests are entertaining and have importance to the overall story. There are even plenty of side quests that introduce interesting and entertaining characters.
RDR2 (especially when playing with high honor) has an amazingly impactful and emotion-filled story. Seeing the character development/deterioration of the gang deepens the emotional connection to the story and characters even more.
Honestly, I think it’s one of the best stories ever told in a single game.
Other game series have an amazing stories told over many games, but RDR2 has an outstanding story encapsulated in the game. Of course it is a prequel to the first game, and the stories of both games connect to make an even more expansive and emotional story, but you could just take the story of RDR2 on its own and it’s still absolutely outstanding.
When executed well, long games can be amazing and fulfilling. RDR2 had so many memorable moments, and that’s in part due to allowing the game to be long. You really get to know the characters gain a sort of attachment to them.
It’s no secret by now that long games (if they’re executed well) are my bread and butter. The stories told through longer games have the potential to be more complex and deep, which is what I look for in a game.
I just wish longer games didn’t put so much strain on the people who work to make them. If deadlines were looser and companies promoted a healthy balance of work and life in the industry, I think games (both long and short) would skyrocket in quality.
Granted they’d take longer to make, but the quality would be something the workers would be a lot more proud of. Workers that aren’t stressed and are well rested tend to make higher quality products. Less stress also helps to keep the passion for making games burning.
    (TL:DR: RDR2 good)

Value for money, or, more accurately, playtime per dollar spent, really don't matter anymore. There are hundreds of great games on Steam that cost less than $5 or are even free which can keep your average player with a 9-5 busy for weeks or even months. My Steam library could probably keep me entertained from now until I die without me needing to spend another dime. It's the same as happened to books. There are more books worth reading than a single person could ever read in their entire life.
But I feel it's not that books or games are too long, it's that there's 7 billion humans with their own thoughts and creativity and we can never hope to even come close to absorbing even a fraction of that. This is especially difficult for my generation. I grew up at a time (the 80s) when it was actually possible to have played almost every game. Shifting from that to being ignorant of a majority of games was a tough pill to swallow and for a while, it led me down a path of trying to keep up to date with everything. Took me a while to realize that, as a result of trying to do that, I wasn't actually playing any games.

i was standing around my friend a few days ago, he was playing Rainbow6 Siege(he's been playing R6 for years).
after a while i asked him why have you been playing this game for so long
why are you always sticking on a single game for such a duration. (he has also been playing RDR2)
in reply he answered that "i likes to focus on a game in a way to spend a good amount of my time on it, like a career that you choose yourself. other types of gamers like you will eventually get bored and want to try something new, i can't blame you. but the way i and some other people like me want to play games is like this. and you can't really blame us either because everyone has different tastes and opinions."
no one has ever answered me better than this.

It's a little bit longer than 5 hours, if you're as bad at it as I am, but I highly recommend Cruelty Squad. It's short enough and tapped into the current zeitgeist unlike anything else.

This would be true if there wasn't a massive selection of quick games. We are far from the days where you had to wait until Christmas until a game came out where there were slim pickings. The library of games is what's too long and specifically your point of Red Dead is the main story is great and I can't really see which part that they could cut and still have a fully enriched story line. Maybe those games just aren't for you like people who don't like long books but it's not an issue when you have millions of games. This is like complaining about the long line you're in when there's a short one right next to you. Also you don't have to do all of the open world* (maybe you can't handle that) but other people are able to ignore it.

Sometimes that length is necessary and earned. Red dead redemption two can be beaten either in 50 hours or over 100. Screaming through the story content in those 50 hours however doesn’t give enough time for the emotions in general feeling of each chapter of the game to build properly, and the ending doesn’t hit with the same punch

    • @slyaspie4934
      @slyaspie4934 Рік тому

Yeah and RDR doesn't really have much filler, grindy content unless you go for 100% and do all the challenges and stuff but main story and side quests are a good mix with plenty of dark humour mixed in

Persona 4 does a great job at feeling short since when the in-game time is limited and there's so much you want to do it feels like the 40 hours it takes to beat it is never enough. If it wasn't based around a calendar I think it would feel like it's being dragged out a bit but the way it's presented you keep thinking "oh god, the week can't be over already, I was so close to maxing out with Kanji and the school trip's tomorrooow!"

That's why I'm mostly playing 7th gen games nowadays. They're usually below 15 hours long, without uncessary bloat, plus they don't take 40-100GB to install. I also beat New Super Lucky's Tale recently and it was *SO MUCH FUN!*. I wish there were more modern 3D platform games, although it's nice to see they're making a comeback recently. I agree with BOTW being a superb open world game. The world in that game is actually enticing to explore, plus the freedom you have to do so.

I didn't even know Umurangi Generation was a thing but then I found out it was made by a New Zealand developer from a city just a bit south of mine. So thanks for that Ovandal, always nice to be exposed to new games from my neck of the woods! (There was a frame where the Tino Rangatiratanga Flag showed up and so that's what tipped me off that something must be up)

RDR2 lets the optional content be optional as much as humanly possible tho. That's why I always read muh slow hunting, muh slow drawer searching and muh camp managemant takes with a lot of confusion.

    • @slyaspie4934
      @slyaspie4934 Рік тому +1

Yeah unless you're going for 100% RDR2 doesn't have loads of grind and filler maybe he should play it before lumping it in with Ubisoft open world games

    • @damsen978
      @damsen978 6 місяців тому

Yeah that's why FF7 was the last JRPG i ever beaten. And the problem isn't that it is too long but the game fails to keep me hooked all the way through. I reached the point where i literally used cheats to get max level and just rush through the game for the story alone.@@bd974k
