Shearwater Teric vs Garmin MK2i Screen Comparison

  • I recently got the Garmin mk2i and first impressions out of the box I was super disappointed. The factory settings puts the screen at 20% brightness which is really dim and almost unreadable. I changed it to 100% in and out of dive mode and I couldn't be happier with it.
    The Teric's screen is an AMOLED display with a sapphire crystal glass
    The MK2I's screen is an MIP LCD display with a sapphire crystal glass.
    The MIP LCD (memory in pixel liquid crystal display) looks much better in full sunlight conditions and literally can be read at any angle.
    I will be doing a full side-by-side comparison of these 2 powerhouse dive computers so you can have the necessary information if your looking to purchase one of these.
    The screen on the MK2i is the same as the fenix series and the forerunner. Garmin consistently uses these MIP LCD screen as they are best for outdoor use. Most of the garmin watches are for outdoor hikers, runners, and general outdoor enthusiasts so its nice surprising they would stick to this same display, it just works.
    I would appreciate if you can drop a like and subscribe as it helps out my channel.

    A comparison of the displays while under water would have been really helpful since with a Dive Computer, that is where the display is critical.

      Underwater both displays looked great and I did not notice an advantage or disadvantage of either while submerged. The reason I compared both in direct and indirect sunlight is because that's where the main difference was.

    great video and good comparison on screens.
    i've heard about the transmitter (for the mk2i) being annoying with it's sonar chirps every 5 seconds, but only from some videos and some have not said anything (i don't know if it's a matter of them wanting to do a good review of the computer, or them just not being bothered by it).
    do you have any experiences yourself?
    cheers from cold water sweden. :)

      Jonas,
      Thanks for your compliment. To answer your question, yes I have noticed that high pitch chirp noise. I didn't notice it until I got to about 1500 psi, but once I heard it, that's all I heard for the remainder of my dive. There is a fix apparently where you can lower the power consumption of the transmitter from the default manufactured setting. I am uncertain weather this affects its range capability or connection. This is already in my upcoming video but I am actually going to do a dive test when I lower the transmitter power consumption to make sure there is no connectivity issues. I will be trying to get rid of that chirp as I found it very annoying.
      Thank you for your comment

      @@divesoflo Thanks for the great info, any update on that high pitch chirp noise issue?

    • @divesoflo
      @divesoflo  3 роки тому +2

      Yes I addressed that issue in my most recent video comparing these 2 computers. Garmins fix did not resolve this issue. Subwave technology is basically sonar, with sonar you do get some kind of ping to communicate between the transmitter and receiver. I know that it is normal but that does not make it any less annoying. Unfortunately until Garmin releases a firmware update, the sonar sound will have to stay. as soon as I find a workaround that does not interfere with the computers capabilities I will post it. Thanks for your comment.

      Thanks for the comment Andrew,
      Go into the settings and increase the brightness to 100%, also do this while in dive mode. Direct sunlight is really where the display does its best work. The MIPLCD has a dot matrix look to it while it sunlight and to me is readable. I’ve never had an issue while diving or general use but in some cases I can see the display not being suitable. I’ve taken it diving, snorkeling, kayaking, golfing, and in general fitness use. I’ve really enjoyed it, but it’s not an AMOLED display but that has its own drawbacks. Direct sunlight AMOLED screens aren’t really legible and the glare doesn’t make it any better.

      Underwater both screens perform fantastic. The main differences I saw were in direct sunlight. The Teric screen is very bright below surface and does a good job overall, the MK2i screen performs good as well as long as the brightness it turned up to 100% while in dive mode.
      The MK3i no longer uses a MIPLCD screen and the switched to an amoled much like the Teric uses.

    a dive computer is a dive computer. i would rather see my dive computer at a quick glance than have to squint or take a longer time at depth to see my info.. the garmin was designed to be used above water. So if you want a dive watch get a dive watch. if you want a walk about watch get one that specific to that. But its all about preference. Mine is the Perdix with my teric as a back up.

    • @divesoflo
      @divesoflo  Рік тому +1

      Allan, not all dive computers are created equally, and not all perform the same. I use both the MK2i and Teric, the MK2i is my front line and the Teric is my backup. Both displays perform the same under water, the Teric visually is not as good during the surface interval. You are right that Garmin products started above the water, but since the descent line came out they are hard to ignore. The health and gps features that work on the MK2i are amazing and it even works with their Inreach products so that little bit extra safety is there if you have those satellite products. I think the Teric is a great stand also me dive computer but comparing the 2 from a feature stand point, the MK2i is a step up. Like you said, it’s all personal preference and that’s basically what it comes down to.

      @@divesoflo Agreed .. I'm hard pressed not to get one for the health features. Getting long at the tooth and always want to stay on top of my health I think the garmin will actually adjust your dive plan if it notices changes in your heart and breathing im' not sure. I know the Scuba pro supposedly has that feature but I don't know of anyone who owns one to ask directly. But I'm a Shearwater fan boy not only for the bullet proof device but for the customer service they offer. I'm actually giving my Teric to my wife. and picking up a Petral 3 because I am planning on taking a Rebreather course. Either way great review. and happy diving.

    Just out of curiosity, did you have an accessory protective glass covering over the Sapphire crystal face of the Teric? If you did please let me know. At 1:43 you can see a few edge reflections that are akin to a chip on the face at the 11:00 and 5:00 position. If so, is it possible that the extra covering has a polarizer coating? Thanks again.

    • @divesoflo
      @divesoflo  3 роки тому

      No there was no screen protector applied. I never used the screen protector, sapphire crystal is extremely difficult to scratch so I saw no reason to apply it. I believe is was just a strong glare from the sun as I was directly in full sunlight.

      @divesoflo  Рік тому

      @bretcoshnitzke905 it’s a hard decision. For me the deal breaker was all the time I wasn’t diving, my Teric sat around not being used. Other than being a great dedicated dove computer, it serves no other functions. It’s too big just to wear as a time keeper. The Garmin checked all the boxes for my use case. You just have to see what your going to use it for and make your decision that way.

      @divesoflo  3 роки тому +1

      unfortunately I do not. I will tell you from experience of using the 2 computers that the Teric does look better at that depth. The MK2i is very clear to read but the Terics brightness is much higher.
      With the MK2i, I went into the settings and as soon as I enter dive mode the screen brightness turns on to 100% and stays on throughout the dive. I found it to be much better on the eyes this way but as far as brightness goes, the Teric still looks more bright and vibrant that I have noticed between 30'-110'.

    • @divesoflo
      @divesoflo  3 роки тому

      I couldn't agree more. Even with the screen brightness as 100%, the MK2i's brightness level is that of a LCD TV from 2006, not super bright, not much eye popping contrast of colors, and kind of just dull. The place where is does shine though is when it's exposed to full sunlight and everything on the screen is extremely visible. The Teric on the other hand is much like a 2021 Super bright AMOLED TV and what you would expect a $1100 dive watch to have. The only drawback is when exposed to very bright direct sunlight, the screen is difficult to read but once you enter the water it is not much of an issue anymore. The TV analogy makes sense to me but I understand why garmin uses the MIP LCD, it is not just a dive watch computer, It has every sport function built into it for all types of outdoor activities. Hope this helped and let me know if you have any other questions to make the decision easier.

    • @diveflyfish
      @diveflyfish 3 роки тому

      @@divesoflo yes I agree. The place where I need advantage visibility is below water for sure. The MIP display is far more stingy on current demand so the use of that keeps the overall run time longer. There is no free lunch and the brightness you pay for in current draw. For me, I believe the below water visibility trumps above for my needs. Thank you again. It helped a lot.

    What is the best for freediving?

    • @divesoflo
      @divesoflo  3 роки тому +2

      Well if you are solely freediving and never plan on scuba diving with air integration than Garmin has the MK2 and the MK2S. The MK2 is the larger with the MK2S being smaller.
      The mk2 lineup (MK2, MK2S, MK2i) perform the same but air integration separates the MK2i from the other 2. I am slightly more partial to the garmin MK2 over the Teric only because I can use the MK2 for fitness tracking and as a smart watch. In my opinion this justifies the price of having a great dive computer and a smart fitness tracker.
      The Teric being a great dive computer, is only a great dive computer and offers no functions to be used on land. If you are looking at getting one of these 2 dive computers than I recommend the garming MK2 for freediving or Scuba with no intention of air integration, MK2i for all around diving with the future possibility of air integration.
      If you do not care about having a fitness tracker or smart watch than the Teric is also a great choice. Keep in mind that I just released a new video comparing these 2 watch computers and the MK2i beats the Teric in battery life, logging dive data, and functions.
      If you do not opposed to having a different look and no air integration, the Shearwater peregrine is a much more affordable option. I hope this helps you and thank you for your comment.
