James on your Teric go to menu, settings, display, then time outs, set it to No Motion then go to time out time and set it to 1 or 5 min, done. The Teric will stay on for the time reading. The only way it times out is if you don’t move your wrist for more of the time you set it up. Your welcome! Love everything you do for us! Love from Orlando.
Agree 100%. I have both, and agree completely with the trade-offs you identified. Garmin is my every day watch, Teric is my secondary dive computer. Or maybe when I’m diving the Teric is my primary, and the Garmin is my secondary. But at the end of the dive, the Teric comes off, and the Garmin stays on. Both are GREAT watch-style dive computers. Thanks for the very honest, even-handed review.
I bought my mk2i on the day it was released and Im wearing it all the time ever since for all my sporting activities. Diving, snowboarding, bike riding, gym workouts, hiking etc. Battery life is superb! GPS function is awesome for surfacing and marking intersting spots on a new dive site.
Battery life is "superb" if you hold it on the charger at all times. I was just diving with a buddy and he forgot to charge his Garmin overnight the way he usually does and his died during our dive. Thankfully it's his backup, his Perdix is the primary. He uses AI with both.
@@brois841 How long had he gone without charging it? The MK2i does not need charging daily unless you are really doing a lot of stuff with it...music, GPS, stuff the Shearwater doesn't do.
My MK1 crapped out on one of my last dives in August. Stopped giving the depth. So I got the MK2. Love it! ❤ Battery goes for over a wk. I'm still learning all the features.
Great video. I own both of these, but we have a few Terics in our house with my wife and daughters. I do use my Garmin daily for all the reasons you stated. When it comes to diving, the screen vs battery is critical. Another thing is how the Garmin is limited in how much you can customize the dive screen. The Teric allows you to make some choices in terms of the information you see. That said, the Garmin gives you gps location for your dives, which is cool. Sadly, I continue to want to use my Perdix because I absolutely HATE the chirp from the Garmin transmitter. The one thing I can point out is that I had the Garmin fail me with the air integration during a mine diving situation. I don’t know if it was the sonar bouncing off the walls, etc. but ever since those dives I started liking my Garmin less.
I found a fix for the chirping noise, if you connect a hp hose to the transmitter and throw it in your trim pocket on the bc it still transmits and the noise is nearly completely silent.
I currently have the MK2i. I love all of the functions the Garmin has BUT for scuba diving, it is sub-par to the Teric. The screen on the Garmin is too dim under water the screens are annoying because you have to swap screens constantly the transmitter makes an ANNOYING sound (unless wearing a wetsuit hood) Then you can't hear it Most importantly, the transmitter will sometimes read incorrect PSI. I just went out to 120ft with a 3100 psi tank but the Garmin read it as 2500. AND the Pressure will intermittently loose connection with the watch I used the Teric before the Garmin MK2i came out but sold it to buy the Garmin. I wish I would've kept it. The Garmin is best for someone that wants an everyday use watch and free-dives, but for people that are diving deeper than 40 ft of water and NEED reliable dive gear. STICK WITH SHEARWATER
I have learned that all those bells and thrills on anything just mean more things to go wrong. If I'm diving, I don't want more distractions in a somewhat dangerous sport. I just started diving with the Shearwater Tern TX along with my Teric.
I got the Perdix AI as I suffer with eyesight issues. I spoke to my LDS who’s a Shearwater & Garmin retailer and shearwater where the company who came back and said to use the Perdix AI even over the more expensive Teric, Garmin didn’t email back ( when the mk1 was out ) A friend of mine has exchanged their Teric for a MK2i and has voiced the concerns about the transmitter and can’t figure out if he can turn it off, so he thinks he’ll be going back to the Teric… Great video as always James. Unbiased and full of knowledge!
The Garmin may? scratch but it is tough. I literally was run by a Ram 1500 pickup while riding my bicycle. Broke my scapula in two places. Face, arms, and legs scratch, torn, ripped. The case around my Garmin watch has really scratched up. The screen? no scratch. The watch band I had to replace. The insurance company bought me a new Garmin MK2i as I was afraid the Garmin watch might be damaged. Still works great. No issues. Yes the case is scratched really bad but I wear it for workouts and my new Garmin with the titanium band for daily wear. I wear both for diving. I do wish the screen was brighter but diving on the Oriskany at 124 ft I could see the watch face perfectly. Diving in the silty, murky local quarry with 5-10 ft vis, I can see the watch face just fine. Basically if I can see the watch I can read the data. I do love how easy it is to change the straps. I can go with a normal strap for everyday wear and warm water diving. I can easily add the longer strap for wearing with a wet or dry suit. Even the titanium strap has a secret extension that allows me to wear it over my wet suit sleeve. I'm glad you mentioned the chirping. I heard that sound for the first time this past weekend and had no idea what that was. Great review.
As an owner of the Suunto D5 (this is what I use for my AI) and the Garmin Decent MK2i, I love both but my Garmin is my everyday watch and I absolutely love it. in fact the Garmin was able to accurately measure bottom depth temp faster than my dive buddies Perdix.
I brought the MkIIi and for one who was very much against Smart Watches, I have to say I am really enjoying the watch. I find I am starting to use more of its functions all the time. The weekly summaries are great to see and track your progress. Have not dived with it yet, however hope to change that soon.
Just a quick note on the Garmin straps. My wife has a Garmin sport watch which seems to have the same type of straps as the Descent. She needed to change the original because they broke. But the new one she bought kept detaching; she had the buy 2 other sets before having one pair that stayed on. I wouldn't want that to happen when I'm 100 feet underwater, my wife and I wish that Garmin made straps with screws. For me Shearwater wins this category ;-)
Interesting, I've been wearing a Garmin Fenix 6X since they came out and I've never had an issue with the strap coming loose, motorcycling (including one wreck), running, swimming, diving, hiking, etc. Was it a Garmin band or one of the many knockoffs on Amazon and was it the right size, they actually make a few. Just my thoughts. Still agree the Teric is amazing.
I have jumped with my Garmin and never had issues ever with my Garmin, I suggest in m y view taking the Deve back to Garmin and they will get it sorted. It also sucks that this happened.
I want to share my personal thoughts. For me a dive computer should be the most reliable piece of tech that I need to entrust myself underwater. For enjoying rides and runs, snowboarding or whatever, I have a Garmin watch. But underwater I have priority to have reliability, be bright, and be a piece of tech for divers. I’m sorry, but a Garmin watch won't last for years, probably 4 or 5 and that's it. Yes, probably 4 or 5… but not as long as a dive computer could last (my perdix is 7 years and it is still like new!), instead of my garmin watches that after 3 years you need to change because of batteries, slowness, issues.. (and I always buy top models from them, and I’m a Garmin enthusiast for running and biking). Thank you for the review, but if you are a diver, please look at a real dive computer and not a fancy one to have a whatsapp notification underwater.
Found your videos recently, as I am about to get back in the water after something of a hiatus due to global events. Travel in Asia has only recently started to open up properly, so heading to take the TDI Sidemount/Deco Procedure/Advanced EANx courses I first booked 2.5 years ago! While my primary has been a Perdix for several years, I was still using my old D4i as my backup rec computer. Decided to replace with the Descent MkIIs based on your reviews and my experience with Garmin in the past. Both use the same algorithm so will be interesting to see if they have an argument :D. I already have AI with the Perdix so I wanted the backup to be independent of that. Except for a some local dives, this will be the first actual dive trip in a couple years so looking forward to refreshing old skills and learning new ones!
So, i just want to follow up on my previous comment having used the Teric, Perdix and Descent now - and this comment is just aimed at the 'how easy is this to get to do the thing I want it to do out of the box' comment. You need to do a lot more prep work with the Garmin than the Teric. The Garmin is an incredible device but the UI is not intuitive and mistakes like accidentally locking yourself in Gauge mode for 24 hours are very easy to make unless your careful. You should always thoroughly familiarise yourself with Dive Equipment before use of course, you are just going to need to spend a lot more time with the Garmin than the Teric.
Great video! Garmin's dive log app is waaaay better from a UI perspective though. Shearwaters is pretty bad imo. That and the GPS really pushes the Garmin over the edge for me. Also now that there's the Mk3i i'm picking one up. I just hope the chirp wont bother me haha.
Hello James! Great video, but I believe you missed the most important comparison of all. Customer service / Product support. Know in all fairness, I do not own a Garmin. I do however own the Perdix AI and the Teric. My Teric was close to two years old. Was because Shearwater just replaced my old Teric with a brand new one. I kept loosing Comms on dives so through my dive shop, we reported the problem to Shearwater, after a few emails back and forth and in less than a weeks time frame. Shearwater asked for my old one and they sent me a brand new computer. I’m curious if any of your other followers had any similar experiences with Garmin? The Garmin has great features, but when it comes to product support / customer service. My experience, Shearwater will win every time!
I have Teric and I also own Garmin smart watch. Garmin has exceptional customer service too btw. Thanks for the video James! I am thinking of getting the Garmin Descent M2 for a back up computer that can also function as everyday watch. This review is helpful!
Good, unbiased review. As far as hearing the acoustic pulse from the Garmin; if you wait long enough your old ears won't hear it. Keep up the great work man. B
Good, and fair, review and comparison. Two comments, 1. I have a Teric and a Perdix and I prefer the teric. I find the screen much more readable and the button use much simpler even when doing tech dives. (I both when tech diving). 2. You did not add a relative comparison of customer support, you mention it but did not formally evaluate the Garmin support. This is a major factor for me as Shearwater has bought my loyalty with their amazing support for products.
@@DiversReady Interesting...shearwater said they did not change the display at all, would be interesting if they snuck one in there and were that humble about it.
I would take Perdix really. Both are great but the thing I cannot see the time on Teric unless press the button is crazy. Other than that Teric wins due to the price because I have an elegant watch already. Battery is ok. It is not like Sunnto D5 when you need charge it every night but you need to charge it every week so Teric is ok for me the buttery is no issue and I prefer bright screen.
I have the Perdix AI and the Mk1 Descent and after a few years, here is my take: AI, the only use I see is that it makes your SAC calculations easy, I never rely on it during the dive, in fact I removed it from my twin set (one more failure point, one more point of entanglement), nothing beats the SPG and the good habit of checking often. I wear a watch every day and I do use it as a smartwatch, so Garmin is the logical choice. On my scheduled dives, Perdix is the primary, Garmin is my secondary, both same settings and GF, never seen any difference. If I have an unscheduled rec dive, I can always do it in with the Garmin. Battery life, I charge the Garmin every 10 days if not diving. When I dive, I always charge before so it is not important. When I bought the Garmin, I set a rule to not dive with battery life less than 30%, never had reached that even in weeklong boat dives, but I did buy an extra charging cable. If I was buying today, I would get the Garmin MkII with no AI again. Do you need 2 computers for casual rec diving with a buddy? No, it's a nice to have and if something goes wrong with one, you can go on with the dive, otherwise you will end the day (never happened to me though). Do you need a Perdix for rec diving? no, it’s an overkill. Do you need 2 computers for tec or solo rec diving? Absolutely yes.
Thanks James, I own the Teric. My choice based on the fact that I own the Perdix as well. Love that I can do a quick glace at the Teric and see everything crystal clear.
Great review James! You did a very well balanced review of both devices. As an FYI, I've been wearing my Garmin Mk2i 24/7 for over a year and I don't have even one scratch on it or the black titanium band. That actually really surprises me but it's true!
I’m a truck driver and my teric charges quick in about 30 min. And that’s while on the road bumping around haven’t had a issue of it losing connection.
Ive never heard the Garmin sonar chirp and Ive been listening for it. I also dont have mine turned up to full power. Maybe turn the power down a notch and give it another try.
I have had both watches. Kind of feel you did some of the categories a disservice. The Garmin Dive app is hands down the better app. Also the Teric can charge on any chi wireless charger, you don’t have to use the cradle. Which makes it easy to travel with as you can use a wireless charger you use for your phone for the watch as well. All in all I prefer the Garmin. I haven’t had any durability issues like you discuss. I’m in the military and it’s held up perfectly fine.
Re the Teric charger, I had a problem with my rapidly dying Teric battery, and when I sent it to the (TERRIFIC) Shearwater tech support out in Snohomish, WA, he was great. Called me to discuss what he found, and had some solid recommendations; very strongly recommended against using third party chargers, as they tend to overcharge the battery and kill battery life. He completely rebuilt my Teric with a new battery, new circuit board, and several other features. Also sent me a flat Shearwater chi charger (I think used by the Peregrine?), which solves the wonky Teric cradle issue. All covered by the Shearwater warranty. I was blown away by the service. So I love my Teric, but I wear my Garmin Mk2i as my primary dive computer and every day smart watch, with the Teric as my secondary computer. Probably an overly expensive back up, but any discussion of diving and cost (especially coupled with underwater photography…) is a pointless debate.
Thanks for a very informative video. I've been eyeing the Teric for awhile and have just been loaned a 'Demo Not for Sale' model to try out. The super bright screen is a big plus for me with my deteriorating eyesight. (just natural ageing, nothing serious) but if I must be perfectly honest, I think the Teric is getting long in the tooth. While I may not ever need all the gazillion functions that the Garmin has, I feel that the Teric should at very least have GPS functionality. There must surely be a new, improved version - on the drawing board at least.
Another great video! Thanks for taking the time. I just wanted to comment on the rating regarding charging. I feel the Teric charging is more advantageous as you can use any Qi rated instead of a proprietary clip charger that can be lost or damaged. I do agree though the little cup shearwater ships with is a bit goofy? The the ubiquitous availability of Qi I just find more appealing. What I did learn from your video was all of the additional features of the Mark II that emulate a typical smartwatch. I was aware of all the activity apps but not the additional apps. Thank you again for taking the time.
As always, Great review! You're fantastic at what you do! Just wanted to say, I LOVE my Garmin M2KI! I wear it all day, every day, and I'm a service tech, And believe it or, no scratches yet, and have dived with it 14 dives so far! Absolutely no problems with the wrist straps. Awesome computer! No complaints or regrets! I don't mind the sonar noise at all. I'm so excited diving, that I forget that it's even making noise, kind of weird... All I can say, awesome computer! I'm sure the Teric is awesome as well. But I use the smartwatch capabilities everyday all day.
I have the Garmin. The audible air sensor technology is truly audible, and I wish it wasn’t there at all. For some, that makes the decision obvious… However, the gps function is cool on the dive log. It puts pins on the dive log map for where you go in and where you come out. And then you can look at a map of all of your dives! Super cool. That plus the battery life gives the Garmin a win.
@@DavidSmith-ns5nt where do you adjust the power levels? I do not hear mine, not sure if it is my hearing, newer version T1, or if I create so much noise breathing that I don't hear it.
Great video, James. Love your channel. I recently bought a Teric and for this first weeks I can say the battery last way more than 50 hrs in watch mode.
Hi first I want to thank you for your videos I follow your Chanel for a long time You absolutely right on your conclusion It it really if you a person that use a smartwatch with all the functions or you need a dive watch that you can see good in the water. For me as a 51 age diver to see good in the water was the most important. This dive watch’s is the best in the market so as I said in the beginning you absolutely right Thank you for your videos
Thank you for this! I just upgraded from the Galileo Luna to the Teric a year ago (quite a leap!) and I love it but there’s always the “should I have bought the Garmin?” question. At the end of the day, I never wear a watch (smart or other) and I love the visuals on the Teric so I feel validated. Phew! I would not say the menu is intuitive, but if I can think of it the Teric does it, I just have to keep asking until I find someone who knows where it is.
There is also transmitter battery life, the battery life of the Garmin T1 transmitter is significantly shorter than the Shearwater or PPS transmitters. I am hoping for a Teric 2 that includes GPS for the dive logging ability.
Love the reviews, been watching the channel for a while. Just a coment about your perdix, I heared Shearwater recomends not to use the silicon cover as it doesn't allow the computer to dry completly, have you heared any of that? cheers! keep the great content.
My wife and I both have covers on our Perdix AI’s. After I rinse them, I pull the covers completely off (very easy to do) and drying is not a problem. I prefer the Silicon covers as they add extra protection.
Absolutely amazing video mate. I'd watch your videos even if you did toaster reviews lol! Concise, informative, straight up honest review with a dash of humour. Thank you!
Having dived both for years, and putting more than 500 dives on each. My preference is still the Garmin. Battery Life is light-years better. More technologically advanced to provide sound dive data both physiologically and scientifically (graphical interfaces with overlays are extremely valuable and immediate). GPS I use every dive; ability to track any diver at the surface through Connect. Sonar sensor is years ahead of the MH8A sensors made by Pelagic (used by SW, Oceanic, AquaL, etc)-- range is easy up to 30ft. Calculation of RMV/SAC/ATR for multiple divers (from pro side).. list goes on. The titanium band is also superb. I like the Teric, but it is legacy in Tech at this point. The only thing changing is UI features and colors. Again, I used it for years, and it hasn't seen water in the past 2. That was just the diving related components...
How do you get on with the planner? It seems that it is not using ZHL 16 C as advertised, I am not at all happy with it and will stick with my Perdix for this.
@@leeminter8825 it does. You have to make sure that your computer is setup properly and use custom gradient factors; notuse the standard presets. It matches perfectly with subsurface and every other DECO algorithm software I've used.
James, when will we see Mk 3i vs Teric and Tern / Peregrine vs Mk3i reviews (price/performance wise)? Understandably Mk 2i has more features than Teric but Display is amazing on Teric. However, Mk3i price is steep and features are more than most rec divers will use.
James! You rock the is the first good comparison I have seen, there are so many fanboys out there I know shearwater is a great brand that does SCUBA dedicated equipment and they are great, but people are not giving Garmin a try before starting to batch the product that is really good also.
James, great overview and comparison; I would like to see you compare the Suunto D5 or EON Core or Steel against the Shearwater or Garmin at some point as well if at all possible, Just to not military rely on Garmin or Suunto and divers will run Shearwater but purely as dive computer typically.
Hi James always enjoy your informative videos. Does the Garmin Descent Mk2i have surface PLB functionality. That would be a hands down easy decision for me.
AFAIK no watch style dive computer has that functionality. However, if you do a lot of ocean dives you could consider investing in the garmin inreach mini for that which will pair and work effortlessly together with your mk2i watch!
James, thanks for the video, I have a question though. I have been looking at the garmin as I am getting to the age where if I want to continue diving I need to keep myself in reasonable condition (COVID did nothing to help me with this). So here I am with my new Garmin descent mk2 and my Perdix. Very happy with the sport and fitness on the MK2 but when I tried the planner I was confused. Air dive 45m dive for 15 mins on the perdix gives me a planned run time of 32 mins, first deco at 12m, on the MK2S I have a run time of 4306 (assume seconds = 71 mins), with a first stop at 27m, the Garmin has a 2 min descent time, but even setting the Perdix to a 17 min bottom time results in a run time of 38 mins and first deco at 15m. So given that info I would expect you to say that the gradient factors were different, but both are set to 40/85. Am I doing something wrong? Have I misinterpreted the planning screen? I tried the planner to test the algorithm and have found that they are different. I have completed the same plan with Baltic and results are very close to the Perdix, I am now questioning the Garmin for obvious reasons. Still I will see what the results are on an actual dive. Many thanks for the videos so far, please can we have a short video on the planning capabilities on both computers, as no deco plan, no gas plan.
Ok, great news, I updated the software on my Garmin Descent MK2 and now the planner produces comparable results with my Perdix, not the same but comparable. Thanks again for the video. One thing about Garmin though, they do need to send their marketing department on some training, I was going to bore you with a list of inaccuracies in some of their content, but got bored. Oxygen Tanks!!!. Very happy with my purchase post update though.
I have the Garmin Forerunner 255 fitness watch and LOVE it. I can only imagine the dive computer is amazing too. Going to go with a Shearwater Petrel 3 though and use my Aqualung i470TC as a backup.
I find that hard to believe.. my Garmin Felix 5S Plus Titanium DLC with Sapphire Crystal glass looks like the day I bought it and it’s been knocked, banged, dropped, everything. I’m not sure how many years old this is. It was around $1000 when I bought it. I have a Tempe I clip to whatever so my body temp doesn’t influence the temperature. It’s definitely a watch/Fitbit/gps/heart monitor.
I would have purchased the Garmin, but living in the Philippines it will just not function, all those wonderful goodies are useless unless you live in the USA or Europe. I decided to give it a miss and I'm really enjoying the Teric, which doesn't time out the display if you set it correctly. For diving I find it really really great and personally think it better than the Garmin, at least from the specs (never owned or tried a Garmin). To sum up my personal experience I'm super glad I got the Sheerwater Teric.
Nice video, as always James. But, since this is about a dive computer, I would like to know if the mk2 has, for example, @+5, delta+5, GF99, SurfGF, and Ceiling, features that have made sherwater a top brand among technical divers. Also, do they let the diver change GF on the run? I think so, but is not clear to me. I've been a Shearwater user for many years, but no the teric.
Very nicely done: compact, comprehensive, and with useful detailed comparisons. Can you tell me what the gps capability is useful for in diving? Under water it will not work. But can if record entry points on a map to facilitate return during the dive?
@@DzivaKrev Thanks, but I was wondering if it could guide me back to my starting point like Google Maps. Let's say I got lost. I'd come to the surface, let gps tell me the direction and distance from my start, then submerge and use my compass. Can the Garmin let me do this?
it is really informed all of me about whic dice compre I will but..absolulitly Shwewater Teric..because it is better than GARMİN mK2İ for dive fonctuin ..many thansk my firend for your good orinetation
@diversready - have you tried the Garmin transmitter since the updates this year as apparently there is an additional lower power mode where you dont hear it anymore.
Fantastic video. One think I disagree about is the phone apps. I think the Shearwater cloud app on iOS is garbage. Currently toying up which one to get, if the Garmin had a brighter screen it would be an automatic buy for me.
Thanks for this video! I love your videos, they're great! I still have a huge dilemma. I've never used air integration but getting more certified and experienced (I'm only Rescue Diver with just 6 years experience of holiday diving), I wonder if it's something I'll need. I'm getting my Nitrox cert next week. Hands down, when it comes to design and size, I'd completely choose the Mk2S. The Mk2i looks and feels too bulky for me. But will I regret not having the air integration? (Note that I intend this computer to be for the foreseeable future, also have my Suuto Zoop that will become my secondary). To be fair, the pieces of functionality that attract me the most to Garmin is the compatibility with the inreach mini which I'd very much like to get as I've already been lost in the sea for 6h and it was not a great experience not being found by the saving team, to use it as an every day multi sports watch and all the other smart watch fun functions. I know that everything I'm mentioning, including comfort due to size, drives me straight to the Mk2S but will I regret not having the air integration!?? HELP!!
I have a Perdix AI and a Garmin descent MK2S (recently upgraded from a sun to D5) I use AI for my recreational dives as it is the lazy way of getting an understanding of your personal SAC rate. I always have a gauge on my regs anyway, so this is the only advantage for me.
It depends what you are looking for, if you are searching for a dive computer that you can also wear during your dive trip, this video will help you to decide. But if you are looking for a smart watch that you will wear everyday for a whole year then I suggest you go for the Mk2s. I made this choice and I ' fully satisfied. Mk2i & teric are too big for that matter.
Good timing on your review, I've been thinking about a new replacement watch and diving computer integrated would be great. My Citizen Aqualand is long in tooth and really showing age. 🤔 Especially since it's continues to show in err more now.
Is it bad I can’t hear my T1 transmitter when I’m diving?!? I have noticed my T1 reads a lower pressure than my SPG towards the end of the dive. I’m talking like 20 bar less.
Great video James 👌 Did you have any issues with the Garmin A.I. reading something different to the SPG? One of my friends had his reading ~20bar off (20bar more than what he actually had)
I sometimes run a Cressi Digi 2 as a digital backup spg with the garmin Mk2i and transmitter (when on back mount single) and the two are always within 2-3psi of each other)
My Garmin tends to read about 50psi lower than my mechanical SPG, but it is consistently a bit lower, so I factor that into my decisions as I monitor my dive. Not a big deal from my perspective. For what it’s worth, the Garmin tends to read water temp a couple of degrees F cooler than my secondary computer (and dive buddies’ different make computers). It too is consistent, so I take that into account when I have to decide wetsuit thickness.
@@Teampegleg his was a digital spg, we checked with a bunch of spgs and found them all to be the same (give or take a few bar) except the Garmin AI transmitter
My life would be easier if Apple just made a dive watch, but with that said it's interesting how much better the charging capabilities are on the Garmin even if I wouldn't use all those features or wear it as a daily watch, but they are a brand known for their watch range on land too.
If you want a multifunction watch the Garmin is very good. But if you just want a computer to dive and you are not so young anymore and don't see that well under bad condition, the Teric is way better. You put this subject on your video for less than 5 seconds (I guess you have excellent eyes) but that is something VERY important.
I had a similar problem; changed the battery more frequently, increased the transmitter to max power, Garmin even sent me a new transmitter, thinking that might be the problem. Even put my watch on my right wrist to be on the same side as the transmitter, and still would lose connection multiple times during the dive. I finally tried a suggestion from a fellow diver, and put the transmitter on a six-inch HP hose, and for whatever reason I’ve not lost connection at all over the eight dives since making the change. It shouldn’t matter to a transmitter advertising 30’ range, but there it is. To minimize any risk of my regulator hose getting fouled on the transmitter now that it sticks out a bit on the pressurized hose, I put the transmitter on the LPI side of my first stage, and my mechanical SPG on the reg hose side, routed along my BCD backplate. That seems to work, and eliminates tangling hoses during the lost regulator recovery skill demonstrations in class.
@@kurttidd8922 I recently changed the battery and the transmitter has been on a higher setting plus on a 6inch HP hose. It’s currently over my right shoulder with my watch on my left wrist. I have bungeed the HP hose to the start of my regulator hosing as I find it helps with keeping everything streamlined. I still have an analog/mechanical SPG that is routed on my left side and clipped of on my waist d ring. Completely agree that it shouldn’t loose connection. I also have been using an shearwater Peridix AI and had no trouble with the connection. Might try and change the battery one more time before going to garmin.
great video, I have both as well and the one thing I want to clarify is that the Bluetooth app connectivity is far superior with the Garmin. You don' really need to even think about about it or take any extra steps to download the dive data from Descent but the Shearwater app has better data for the Teric
Love the sound of this video as I’m just hit play as I’m sending this. But I really feel this is a unfair match right now. As for the watches: Teric, straight up dive computer / watch. That’s it. Best feature the OLED display. Garmin over all of a far better watch / dive computer/ outdoor explorer fitness watch hands down anyone knows it. I don’t need to say anything. Also to mention the Garmin Mk3i should be getting the Same OLED display as the Epix Gen 2 / OLED Fenix 7. however you want to name it. Lol. Later this year or early next year. Keep up the good work dude love the content.
For me I want my dive computer to be a dive computer, not 1000 other things. I do not want my dive computer to be my everyday watch as it is keeps me alive, so I use it only for diving. Perdix for me 🙂
James on your Teric go to menu, settings, display, then time outs, set it to No Motion then go to time out time and set it to 1 or 5 min, done.
Thanks for sharing! Dive safe.
I bought my mk2i on the day it was released and Im wearing it all the time ever since for all my sporting activities. Diving, snowboarding, bike riding, gym workouts, hiking etc. Battery life is superb! GPS function is awesome for surfacing and marking intersting spots on a new dive site.
Thanks for sharing! Dive Safe.
Love it! ❤
Battery goes for over a wk. I'm still learning all the features.
bought the 2i a few months back. never looked back. have about 40 dives on it. Love it.
Does the GPS work under water or only surface? I think the display is a YUUUGGGEE difference! I'm torn between these 2 here and the Perdix 2.
The screen on the Garmin is too dim under water
the screens are annoying because you have to swap screens constantly
the transmitter makes an ANNOYING sound (unless wearing a wetsuit hood) Then you can't hear it
Most importantly, the transmitter will sometimes read incorrect PSI. I just went out to 120ft with a 3100 psi tank but the Garmin read it as 2500.
AND the Pressure will intermittently loose connection with the watch
I used the Teric before the Garmin MK2i came out but sold it to buy the Garmin. I wish I would've kept it.
The Garmin is best for someone that wants an everyday use watch and free-dives, but for people that are diving deeper than 40 ft of water and NEED reliable dive gear. STICK WITH SHEARWATER
Thank you. About to buy one and this is changing my mind. I need reliability on air level.
Could you please do a review on Garmin Descent G 1 🙌
I have learned that all those bells and thrills on anything just mean more things to go wrong. If I'm diving, I don't want more distractions in a somewhat dangerous sport. I just started diving with the Shearwater Tern TX along with my Teric.
I got the Perdix AI as I suffer with eyesight issues. I spoke to my LDS who’s a Shearwater & Garmin retailer and shearwater where the company who came back and said to use the Perdix AI even over the more expensive Teric, Garmin didn’t email back ( when the mk1 was out )
A friend of mine has exchanged their Teric for a MK2i and has voiced the concerns about the transmitter and can’t figure out if he can turn it off, so he thinks he’ll be going back to the Teric…
Great video as always James.
The Teric has a motion function/setting that keeps the watch display on.
Do the Shearwater and Garmin use the same dive table? He’ll probably say in the vid. 😂
I brought the MkIIi and for one who was very much against Smart Watches, I have to say I am really enjoying the watch. I find I am starting to use more of its functions all the time. The weekly summaries are great to see and track your progress. Have not dived with it yet, however hope to change that soon.
Thanks for sharing! Dive safe.
Where these the cheaper aftermarket straps?
I dove approximately 40 dives with the descent mk2i and wear it every day. Never a problem with the straps.
Yes! Same for my wife and I, shearwater straps are solid!
Thanks for watching! Dive safe.
LOL Garmin is a shitty DC
Wait till you see the screen on the new Perdix 2!
Thanks for sharing! Dive safe.
Looking forward to your review of the Garmin Descent Mk3i :)
Thank you for this video. I am shopping for a smart dive watch/computer. This video has helped me a bunch. I like all of your videos.
Been tossing these two up all day!! Perfect timing
Enjoy! Thanks for watching!
Thanks James, I own the Teric. My choice based on the fact that I own the Perdix as well. Love that I can do a quick glace at the Teric and see everything crystal clear.
Great to hear! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the head to head. AND confirmation that Perdix is the best dive computer ever 🤩🤩❤️
Oh hands down the Perdix 2 is the best dive computer out there.
These days if money were no object I would get the Petrel 3, it is the Perdix with a larger AMOLED screen.
Great review James! You did a very well balanced review of both devices. As an FYI, I've been wearing my Garmin Mk2i 24/7 for over a year and I don't have even one scratch on it or the black titanium band. That actually really surprises me but it's true!
Thanks for sharing! Dive safe.
Sir, this was a really good and informative video. I leaning more towards the farming.
I’m a truck driver and my teric charges quick in about 30 min. And that’s while on the road bumping around haven’t had a issue of it losing connection.
Thanks for sharing!
Ive never heard the Garmin sonar chirp and Ive been listening for it. I also dont have mine turned up to full power. Maybe turn the power down a notch and give it another try.
Time for a Mark 3 comparison. Please and thank you!
I have the mk2s. Battery life is less but it is wearable day to day without being enourmous. I like it a lot more than the teric
Thanks for watching. Dive safe!
Love your videos! Very informative!
Great video! Excellent explanation!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for the great comparison. You helped me solidify my choice.
Can you use the Shearwater transmitter with the Garmin?
Shearwater customer service is incredible! Great video
For some, that makes the decision obvious…
However, the gps function is cool on the dive log. It puts pins on the dive log map for where you go in and where you come out. And then you can look at a map of all of your dives! Super cool.
That plus the battery life gives the Garmin a win.
I have the garmin and I don't hear it, not sure why.
I love all the features of the garmin, I use it on hikes, walks, strength training, etc
I dont hear it either. There are adjustable power levels and the lower levels are quieter. Ive never needed to turn mine up to high so its silent.
@@DavidSmith-ns5nt where do you adjust the power levels? I do not hear mine, not sure if it is my hearing, newer version T1, or if I create so much noise breathing that I don't hear it.
Got the MK 2i...love it, though the screen brightness ain't all that
Great video, James. Love your channel. I recently bought a Teric and for this first weeks I can say the battery last way more than 50 hrs in watch mode.
Thanks for sharing! Dive Safe
Hi first I want to thank you for your videos I follow your Chanel for a long time
You absolutely right on your conclusion
It it really if you a person that use a smartwatch with all the functions or you need a dive watch that you can see good in the water. For me as a 51 age diver to see good in the water was the most important.
This dive watch’s is the best in the market so as I said in the beginning you absolutely right
Thank you for your videos
Well said! Thanks for Watching.
Thanks dude. You helped make me a decision! Garmin
Thank you!
Thanks for watching! Dive safe!
Waiting for Garmin 2023/4 MK3 or what ever it will be or just go with a Descent G solar. What you think???
Great video. Liked and subscribed!
James, whats the size of your wrists? Did you find one watch bulkier (or too bulky) than the other?
You can also charge the teric with a wireless charge powerbank when traveling.
Well said! Thanks for watching.
Yeah! Thanks, Dive Safe.
i have the teric and the mares genius. I love the teric it does the job with extras....... the genius is really nice also big screen easy to navigate
James, great overview and comparison; I would like to see you compare the Suunto D5 or EON Core or Steel against the Shearwater or Garmin at some point as well if at all possible,
Just to not military rely on Garmin or Suunto and divers will run Shearwater but purely as dive computer typically.
@diversready, is there a comparison between Shearwater Teric Vs Garmin Descent Mk3i coming?
Which one is better for ambidextrous users? The Teric's 4-buttons layout or Mk2i's? Mk2i 5-buttons design can be more intuitive for some as well.
Can you add the Suunto D5 to this comparison also?
FYI the Shearwater will charge on any wireless charger - no need to pack its own on your next trip.
What would you recommend for a charger? I've tried a couple with inconsistent results
Can these watches be used with drysuites? (As in with no direct contact to the skin)
I have a question about suunto d5, does it have similar feature of air integration alert of 2 tanks like shearwater teric?
Garmin mk2 i is next level for a recreational diver like me and for lifestyle
Thanks for the review, if I ever get rich...
One question though: how about the use of the buttons with thick gloves/dry gloves?
Easy. I use Kubi system with my MK2i
Nice video, as always James. I've been a Shearwater user for many years, but no the teric.
pretty sure it does
Very nicely done: compact, comprehensive, and with useful detailed comparisons.
Can you tell me what the gps capability is useful for in diving? Under water it will not work. But can if record entry points on a map to facilitate return during the dive?
It record your entry and exit points if you wait for gps to get your location :)
I dove on it in February and I heard it. When did the update come out? And is this a feature that has to be turned on?
@@leftistelf - came out about then, you need to set it on the transmitter as low power mode (it used to be standard or high)
Yup I just was diving last weekend and I didn’t hear the beep. Honestly, even when I could hear it, it didn’t bug me.
Can't wait to see the new Apple Watch Review. I have my suspicions pre release but we shall see!
great work!
Thanks for watching!
Love to get your view on the Apple Watch Ultra now!
Definitely get the air integration. You will regret not
It depends what you are looking for, if you are searching for a dive computer that you can also wear during your dive trip, this video will help you to decide.
Go for it!
Is it bad I can’t hear my T1 transmitter when I’m diving?!?
I have noticed my T1 reads a lower pressure than my SPG towards the end of the dive. I’m talking like 20 bar less.
I cant hear mine either. There are adjustable power levels that affect the loudness of the chirp
if your not using the garmin can i have it thanks
Great video James 👌
Did you have any issues with the Garmin A.I. reading something different to the SPG?
One of my friends had his reading ~20bar off (20bar more than what he actually had)
I sometimes run a Cressi Digi 2 as a digital backup spg with the garmin Mk2i and transmitter (when on back mount single) and the two are always within 2-3psi of each other)
While it is possible that the digital transducer in the transmitter was off, I would believe that the mechanical SPG was more likely to be off.
@@EKKsoldier622 2-3 psi difference is completely understandable but not 20bar, that's about 290 psi!
@@Teampegleg his was a digital spg, we checked with a bunch of spgs and found them all to be the same (give or take a few bar) except the Garmin AI transmitter
I've said it before and I'll say it again: You'll pry my Teric's out of my cold dead hands.
My life would be easier if Apple just made a dive watch, but with that said it's interesting how much better the charging capabilities are on the Garmin even if I wouldn't use all those features or wear it as a daily watch, but they are a brand known for their watch range on land too.
Thanks for sharing! Dive safe.
We're not really friends, but I've also had to RMA my Peregrine after the pressure sensor failed, so you can add me to the list :D
If you want a multifunction watch the Garmin is very good. But if you just want a computer to dive and you are not so young anymore and don't see that well under bad condition, the Teric is way better. You put this subject on your video for less than 5 seconds (I guess you have excellent eyes) but that is something VERY important.
Interface I’ll add the point for the touch screen on the Garmin
And battery life kills it!
The Garmin doesn’t have a touch screen.
I found that my Descent mk2i would lose connection with the t1 transmitter during the dive.
I don't notice my Garmin transmitter chirp 🤷
great video, I have both as well and the one thing I want to clarify is that the Bluetooth app connectivity is far superior with the Garmin. You don' really need to even think about about it or take any extra steps to download the dive data from Descent but the Shearwater app has better data for the Teric
Thanks for the info! Dive safe.
Look at that: two dive watches that I don't have the money to buy...
Thanks for your support! Dive safe.
@@DiversReady I have heard the MK3i will be out more like 2025
Pity Garmin didnt use the bog standard transmitter that everyone else uses...
For me I want my dive computer to be a dive computer, not 1000 other things. I do not want my dive computer to be my everyday watch as it is keeps me alive, so I use it only for diving. Perdix for me 🙂
One problem with Garmin is that the battery cannot be replaced. If she “dies” in three years, you throw away $1,500
