The late film that should have been shown was Husbands (1970).

I notice the BBC was aimed at a far more discerning viewer then, with an Alain Delon film as their late night movie and BBC2 showing Mary Queen Of Scots,. quite a demanding fillm for a Friday night. I know ITV then wasn't like it is now, but the BBC always came across as more serious and more demanding in the early eighties outside of Saturday nights.

      That's the one ...
"Sitting here in the stadium tonight, you have to say the task facing Northern Ireland is monumental." - BBC match commentator John Motson live on BBC1 before kick-off.
"And he's blown! Northern Ireland have done it! The proudest moment in Irish football history, surely. They've won the group." - BBC match commentator John Motson live on BBC1 at full-time.
A truly joyous interlude - one of many our diverse sporting heroes provided - in such often so troubled times.

This was the only game shown on the BBC that day. Earlier England had beaten Kuwait One-Nil, and never shown live on either BBC1 or ITV was West Germany v Austria and I will leave any of you reading this to look out. FIFA World Cup biggest scandals and it is there.
