You are almost right about icewine, but it is originaly from Germany, tokaj is when the grapes is attacked by nobelrot so it isHungarys variaton on suternees from France
I actually bought a bottle of the winter storm as a graduation gift to myself a month ago. I have two weeks till I can open it to celebrate my graduation and getting a career position. I'm really glad you have a review on it now so that I can try to get all the notes!
Daniel & Rex, what if you obtained one ice wine barrel and finished one of your hot house cooked Texas whiskeys? You noted how only the 21-year aged Glenfiddich could hold up to the ice wine sweetness. Well 21-years in Scotland is about, what, 4 in Texas hot dog years?
Love this series! It’s ignited and broadened my interest in whiskey. I went from drinking Macallen on special occasions and having the opinion that “Peaty whiskey just isn’t for me” to purchasing Lagavulin and loving every drop. That is all thanks to ya’ll. I watched your episode on the HP cask strength Texas edition ($$$) and much to my wife’s chagrin, found a distributor and I enjoy it greatly. This leads to my question; what is the best way to enjoy all the whisk[e]y without the cost of the “bottle by bottle” method? P.S. I went to Herman Marshall here in Texas for a tour and it was a phenomenal experience. Herman Beckley was an outstanding host and makes the best kind of whiskey.. the kind I like to drink.
Peller Estates winery is in Niagara-on-the-Lake Ontario - between Buffalo and Toronto. Close to the Gretzky and Forty Creek distilleries, and the Whisky Pixie.
Umm Daniel... Peller Estates winery is in Niagara-on-the-lake, Ontario. No where near Alberta. My wife and i spend a fair amount of time going to the wineries,
I’m originally from Northeast Ohio. They do a lot of Ice Wines there as well. Also around Niagara on the Lake, near Lake Ontario, they do a lot of them.
Funny story about Winter Storm... I won a bottle of the first edition and decided to do a special tasting for my birthday last year. I also had a late harvest wine and I picked up a bottle of the Glen Breton Ice (Nova Scotia's Glenora Distillery...and also an ice wine finish). We started with the Glenfiddich and I encouraged folks to sample some of the wine and go back to the whisky to see if it brought out some of the flavours. A couple of my friends are more seasoned whisky drinkers, and so they decided to work ahead. I discovered this because they started choking and coughing a bit. The thing is, Winter Storm is bottled at a respectable 43%. Glen Breton Ice is cask strength and bottled at 57.2%. I did have it noted on the tasting sheet, but the guys weren't paying attention and just sort of dove in, full bore. The rest of the attendees used a little more caution as we moved on to the Ice. 😆😁 BTW...Glenfiddich's ice wine casks came from Southern Ontario, not Alberta. We don't grow grapes out here. 😊
The Glenfiddich Winter Storm in an AMAZING Scotch, it took me 8 months to obtain a bottle and WOW it was awesome. I have since acquired a few more bottles.
Love the channel, been a subscriber for a few months now. Just curious how you can tell the honey was drizzled by a wooden honey dipper rather than by a spoon or any other utensil that can be used to drizzle? Let me know!! 😂
Do a review on glenfiddich grand cru please. A local store of mine has had one for awhile, and I've thought about getting it, but its alot to spend without knowing anything about it.. i can't find any reviews on it by anyone important lol
I have been trying to find the history but have been unable to. Why/when did we start shipping bourbon barrels to Scotland?? How did it become so common? I am sure some magnificent bastard knows the answer!!
They didn't add the sacrificial spirits to the blend. They aged grain spirit for a year and threw it away. Then they took the blend and vatted it for a year in the ex-grain spirit cask. Because of the spirit that leached out of the cask and into the blend, they couldn't call it whisky. They estimate the sacrificial spirit only makes up about half a percent of the final blend.
The only souvenir I got in Scotland was that glenfiddich winter storm. It cost as much as the plane ticket, but damn if it wasn't worth every penny. It was very melancholy to finish that bottle.
What Alaxander Murray is behind Daniel's right shoulder just behind the Dewars? Second question, have you enlightened us as to the contents of said bottle?
I have a bottle of the Winter Storm and I really really love it. I also managed to buy a bottle of ice wine from Peller Estates from their Oak casks. The similarities are amazing. But the ice wine does not complement the Winter Storm. It kind of ruined the taste. But I absolutely love the Winter Storm.
Hmmm. Tokaji Aszu gets it's sweetness from botrytis cinerea (mold) infection. This dries out the grape concentrating the sugars. Eiswein is traditionally produced in Germany, though I believe its origins lie elsewhere.
I DID drink with you this morning! Although it was Evan Williams black label. I sampled Monkey Shoulder (again) BEFORE watching the video. That's something I'll miss IF/WHEN I can go back to work. 😁
Peller Estates is in the Niagara (Canada) Region. It's apparently quite the social thing to do is volunteer to go out to the picking and get a bottle as pay. It used to be huge money to sell the Icewine to the Chinese until they starting making their own shitty knockoffs. Which is kind of fair since we were ripping them off. I generally prefer Late Harvest wine > Ice Wine for drinking.
Okay Crowder Steven, Phenomenology is made up of Tamdhu, Glenlossie, Highland Park, Talisker and Caol Ila giving it evidently more smoky and phenolic character. Stranger & Stranger is made up of Glenlossie, Glen Elgin, Girvan and Linkwood sooo... 1/4 same distilleries with zero Islay influence. Factually not the same bottle of blended scotch my friend.
I was on a wine tasting tour along the Niagara escarpment. The salesgirl offered me a taste of their ice wine and I asked her what does it taste like. Her answer....:Like tiny little angels peeing on your tongue:...what can you say?
I tried Monkey Shoulder which I really like, but want to switch up. I also tried Lagavulin 16, but its a bit expensive. Any recommendation for a Lagavulin substitute or scotch in general that might have some of the flavor and note as Monkey Shoulder or Lagavulin?
The Wettle is a man of myth & legend in The Tribe. It is said he was not born, but rather emerged from a new oak cask, coopered by Kentucky Angels and was weened on 'Shine distilled under a Harvest Moon. Likely the offspring of an ancient Dryad, he pledged himself in service to Demeter, crafting the finest casks to hold the liquid essence of her harvests. His uncanny skill as a cooper earned him the title of Oak Whisperer. A name so sacred it is seldom uttered in the presence of mortals. Half man, half satyr, The Wettle is renowned for his penchant for mischief. The milk of human kindness flows through his veins, but is tempered by a heaping dose of good natured ball busting. His generosity and shenanigans became legendary in the early days, to the point that the pweepble of both #TeamCookie and #TeamBiscuit rallied for him to be honoured by the Masters of the Vault. Thus, the title of "Full Wettle" is only bestowed upon those who attain a level of generosity above that of a Patron Saint of Whisky.
Guy's!!! It's pronounced Glenfidd-och. Like LOCH ness monster. It's true. I emailed the distillery in Scotland and they educated me on the proper pronunciation!
Sacrificial Spirit would be an amazing name for a bar.
Who else is on pins a needles to see what they have in store for 200,000 Subs!

15:25 you know what this means, don't you... we need a poor man's blend of the Glenfiddich Winter Storm.
Yes please

I thought that right away too. Alberta ice wine? Never heard of it, but the Niagara wine region is known for producing world renowned ice-wine.
It's even writen on the bottle Ontario ice wine barrels.
Love how 2 guys can taste the same bottle and find different notes and then 'argue' about the taste while agreeing about it.
I’m originally from Northeast Ohio. They do a lot of Ice Wines there as well. Also around Niagara on the Lake, near Lake Ontario, they do a lot of them.

My sacrificial mead was a plain fairly dry mead, but it pulled wood sugars and tannins and it's joined my lineup (that is, once i have a lineup 😂)
“Vibrantly rich and fruity”... kinda sounds like Rex’s personality after a few too many Redbreasts
Has there already been an episode comparing the various wine cask finished whiskeys? If not there should be.
Do a review on glenfiddich grand cru please. A local store of mine has had one for awhile, and I've thought about getting it, but its alot to spend without knowing anything about it.. i can't find any reviews on it by anyone important lol

This sounds like a Glenfiddich I might actually like!
Great story Rex thanks for that.
What is your guys favorite compass box? I need to get my first one this evening
Ryan H No Name and Orangerie. Glorious and at opposite ends of the spectrum. No name is smoky and Orangerie is fruity and, of course, orange.
Have you tried the Glenfiddich Grand Cru yet?

About time for Glenfiddich Winter Storm!!!!! I will now open my bottle
Just picked up a bottle of winter storm batch 1 in its case ,any idea what its worth in USA $ ?

COMPASS BOX STRANGER & STRANGER - blended malt
80% Re-Charred Hogshead (malt whisky Glenlossie)
14% Re-Charred Barrels (malt whisky Glen Elgin)
5% Sherry But (malt whisky Linkwood)
1% Refill Hogshead (malt whisky Girvan)
Have you considered doing a unique title for each MB that exceeds patron saint status?
Hey guys! Is that Winter Storm batch #1 or #2? Do you know if there is any difference in taste between the two? Thank you! -Matt
Watching these videos at double speed is hilarious....
Great stuff guys! Enjoyed the debates on sweetness :)
Hmmm. Tokaji Aszu gets it's sweetness from botrytis cinerea (mold) infection. This dries out the grape concentrating the sugars. Eiswein is traditionally produced in Germany, though I believe its origins lie elsewhere.
Camera work and editing is 👌

I'm new to scotch. But I was wondering if y'all can do a video that includes Glencullen 10 year speyside single malt scotch?

Seriously??? You didn't add some Glenfiddich 12 to the Stranger and Stranger, after Daniel said that... What about FOR SCIENCE!
Will they realize if few of the bottles on the shelf disappears ?
We make ice wine up here on America's Great North Coast, the great lakes.
I think Rex is secretly a level Mooch Sommelier
Come to Nova Scotia we can make ice wine every year
Can you add the price of the bottles, either mention it/ a graphic or in the description
It always throws me how Daniel can have an accent that is equal parts Scottish and Texan 😂
stranger & stranger= phenomenology re-labeled, change my mind

Laphroaig 10 for a peaty scotch
JW Green label is a well rounded blend that won't hurt the wallet too badly. Made up of only Talisker, Linkwood, Cragganmore, and Caol Ila.
@@derricka8880 Thomas Biddle, Thanks for the tips guys. I'll be sure to check both of your guy suggestions.
What exactly is a wettle anyways?
He’s someone who donated so much whiskey that they made a new category above patron saint
@@alanbenn9938 haha yes, in the context of Whisk(e)y Vault i understand. I meant is it a real thing? I Tried googling with no luck.

I was at a bar and on the menu they had the Winter Storm....AND THE MENU WAS WRONG! I'd known it was too good to be true but I was still disappointed
I think the word you were looking for was "more personality". Just a hunch."Muscular", "massive"!!!
