There april fool's updates feel like old minecraft updates. The poisonous potato update feels like something that could have been created a decade ago but in the modern game
Hello. I'm the guy who added the entries to the wiki, being a very active and eager 16 year old wiki moderator at the time, as well as the guy who managed to get Cake into Minecraft via the Quest for Cake campaign about 15 years ago. The whole situation is strange, and so is how the names came about. I know we would have tried to verify the names. Though back then, these names were so ubiquitous, we simply just, knew what they were. For us at the time, it was simply common knowledge of their names. I still don't know how or why, but the whole name situation is kinda fascinating. The community effectively brainwashed itself into believing the name was so, to the point that a year after they had been added and removed, in our archival attempts, I would make the pages for them and simply add their accepted "official" names. It's quite a fascinating Mandela effect we all slipped into. A big lesson for other wiki editors too. Be sure of your sources. We seemingly did not dig deep enough at the time, and no doubt the wiki page only circulated the community misunderstanding further, to the point that it's now too late, these *ARE* their names now.
To think that Steve went from being a base model / zombie - like hybrid to an actual character with who's so iconic he's in one of the biggest crossover games ever and has crossed over with many different universes including Sonic, Tetris, Mario, Angry Birds, Star wars & more just shows you how far he's come.
In Bedrock Edition's character creator, Steve's beard is in the facial hair section and the mouth section, labelled as "Steve's beard?" and "Steve's mouth?" respectively.

_"The most recognizable character in all of human history"_ is one hell of a stretch. Steve is certainly an iconic figure across many demographics, but "most recognizable character in all of human history" is just too much of a stretch.
There's probably no real deep meaning behind cial going with the name "Steve". It's the same principle with naming random things on a whim with the first name you think of at the top of your head, and you tend to go for generic, easy-to-remember names like Brad, Joe, Bob, or Steve. That's probably what happened there. of course no one in that chat could've anticipated the Butterfly Effect possibly stemming from that one throwaway line lol

Fun fact: in the older pocket edition versions (before it became Bedrock edition), the game’s default name for the player is Stevie. It wasn’t Steve for some odd reason.
So, basically, Steve was named for the character model Steve, who was this named based off the other model “Black Steve”, which was most likely inspired by a character with the same name from Code Monkeys. I can buy that.
4:11 - I read that Notch decided to not use the models because he and Docky couldn't work make the models/rigging work with the game. Notch thought it was complicated to do collaboration work and decided to go back to going solo.
When the people from the Minecraft Wiki realized that the names were unofficial, there was a lot of discussion on whether or not to keep the names of the mobs or not. They have decided to have their names remain the same but they do mention the origins of their unofficial names for the characters on the "Mob (entity)" page.
Whoa, that's crazy! I've been seeing a very lengthy and in-depth discussion about this going down on the Minecraft Wiki discord server were all this was unearthed. Fascinating! Edit: One of the people involved in the discussion is Kizzycocoa, who shows up in the IRC logs and was the first to add the names to the wiki!
0:30 Speed running videos: Steve got his name from a collab in super meat boy, the creator did not know what to call him as he had no name so he just named him steve. yeah.
Steve is how I first found out about minecraft. After reading a diary of the wimpy kid book, I randomly googled one of the characters - Strong Steve. Doing this led me down a rabbit hole of animations, and as a little kid, I was enamoured by them. For years afterwards, I continued to consume Minecraft content, and I continually begged my mom to buy me Minecraft. After a few years of me annoying my mom with Minecraft, she finally bought it for me. That was 6 years ago, and still to this day I continue to play it
I remember once hearing about something similar to this before and it mentioned how in super meat boy Steve is a playable skin but because Steve was added before he was named Steve he was simply called Mr. Minecraft and then I think one of the developers suggested the name Steve to Notch and he liked it I heard this a few years ago and I’m going entirely off of memory
if i remember right somewhere it's recorded that during minecrafts development Notch was just having a casual conversation with some coworkers while designing the bow, and brought up the topic of "the guy's name" after a few seconds of thinking Notch said something like, "What if we name him something basic like, Steve." they all laughed and never brought it up again, supposedly one of his coworkers told some fans about the conversation and they spread the name steve from there
What if steve was named when a guy call the model "steve" after looking at the model and be like "hey this model looks like my uncle/friend" and then tell his friends about it 😅
That random game designer who created the beast boy and others, must be walking around must knowing her worked on one of the greatest games ever. Aura is unlimited
The fact that the people on the forms started referring to "white Steve" as just "Steve" even though "black Steve" was the original is crazy. People just decided that white was the default 💀
this must be the first time in a while, where someone has posted a theory video and the comments have NOT been hijacked by Game Theory children. Praise be, its a miracle!
Thanks for digging out all of this info! Great video. It seems like there is still more to this story missing, Cial calling the player "Black Steve" makes it look like someone else already called the player model "Steve". I mean why would they call the model specifically Black *Steve* and not literally any other name with "Black" before it. If there is nothing else in the IRC chat it's probably still out there just somewhere else... or gone.
Cial updated his reddit to mention it was probably a Code Monkeys reference, because it was originally "Black Steve and White Steve" and he liked it at the time
I dunno why, but I thought Notch named him since he thought a generic name for the protagonist would be funny. This would align with him naming the Ender Dragon Jean. Or maybe that was the inspiration after the community named Steve
I'm not even joking. When I was a very little kid (before I could even read) I jokingly called the Minecraft player skin Steve because I thought it fit. I thought it was just a funny little thing between me an my brothers but nope. That was his actual name.
4:09 if I'd have to guess, if the characters were for another game, Dock just gave Notch the models to see how they would work in a game and Notch just put it out in an actual release for funsies, Minecraft wasn't nearly as big yet and this is stuff that could just very well happen.
this reminds me of when wynncraft added a raidboss to their server known as The Nameless Anomaly, and then it became a meme in the playerbase to give the anomaly a name, and they all collectively decided on Greg.

0:30 Speed running videos: Steve got his name from a collab in super meat boy, the creator did not know what to call him as he had no name so he just named him steve. yeah.
700k by the end of the year? Get this mf to 1 million🤠
ooooohh so thats why so many websites and fan games would call steve "steve?" back in the day
Steve is how I first found out about minecraft. That was 6 years ago, and still to this day I continue to play it
5:18 "but you were supposed to be a St, eve" "Steve..? I am thinking I like that name"
Is nobody gonna talk about how Herobrine's appearance clearly came from the previous zombie Steves in the unreleased Zombie Town game?

This is how actual historians will be in the far future
You’re not wrong
Before steve was added, he was captain america, left the avengers and moved to minecraft LMAO
After watching this video, the word “Steve” was said so many times that it just sounds weird now
I remember once hearing about something similar to this before and it mentioned how in super meat boy Steve is a playable skin but because Steve was added before he was named Steve he was simply called Mr. Minecraft and then I think one of the developers suggested the name Steve to Notch and he liked it
I heard this a few years ago and I’m going entirely off of memory
0:00 this is incorrect, Mario is the most recognizable character
That’s debatable. Minecraft is definitely more popular and has celled more copies.
@@Blizzards_holocron Minecraft might have more copies than Mario, but if you ask your parents if they know Mario, they will say yes
Jesus, your editing skills are so nice. I clicked on the video and could not click off
Any time you mention your sub goal I'm kinda shocked by your sub count ngl
You deserve wayyy more subs imo
if i remember right somewhere it's recorded that during minecrafts development Notch was just having a casual conversation with some coworkers while designing the bow, and brought up the topic of "the guy's name" after a few seconds of thinking Notch said something like, "What if we name him something basic like, Steve." they all laughed and never brought it up again, supposedly one of his coworkers told some fans about the conversation and they spread the name steve from there
Yet another well done documentary keep it up 🗿🍷👌
It's crazy and cool how you can look back at chat logs that are over a decade old.
And here I was thinking that super meat boy began the Minecraft Steve name
6:35 "I sentence all Black Steves to drowning!"
Hold up. Why?
The fact that the people on the forms started referring to "white Steve" as just "Steve" even though "black Steve" was the original is crazy. People just decided that white was the default 💀
Systemic racist ideology unfortunately 😔
thats gotta be racist💀
Racism moment
Its probably caused by the fact that in most games theres the black/negative variant of a character. (Like eggman nega)
I think it’s just that black Steve has white hair so he looks discoloured
this must be the first time in a while, where someone has posted a theory video and the comments have NOT been hijacked by Game Theory children. Praise be, its a miracle!
I miss Notch so much
Thanks for digging out all of this info! Great video.
It seems like there is still more to this story missing, Cial calling the player "Black Steve" makes it look like someone else already called the player model "Steve".
I mean why would they call the model specifically Black *Steve* and not literally any other name with "Black" before it.
If there is nothing else in the IRC chat it's probably still out there just somewhere else... or gone.
Cial updated his reddit to mention it was probably a Code Monkeys reference, because it was originally "Black Steve and White Steve" and he liked it at the time
@@DragonSlapper64 Ah interesting ok, thanks for the little update
How many times did you say Steve?
The zombies are the many carcasses of steve that died and then revived and the skeletons are the zombies but decomposed to bone
Steve, what has he been hiding for 15 years?
I dunno why,
but I thought Notch named him since he thought a generic name for the protagonist would be funny. This would align with him naming the Ender Dragon Jean. Or maybe that was the inspiration after the community named Steve
huh i always thought it was the other way around, funny how the steve we know today was named after another steve lol
I'm not even joking. When I was a very little kid (before I could even read) I jokingly called the Minecraft player skin Steve because I thought it fit. I thought it was just a funny little thing between me an my brothers but nope. That was his actual name.
“I am Steve”
4:09 if I'd have to guess, if the characters were for another game, Dock just gave Notch the models to see how they would work in a game and Notch just put it out in an actual release for funsies, Minecraft wasn't nearly as big yet and this is stuff that could just very well happen.
So this is my back story.... nice
cial when he comes back online after years to realize he named the most popular character ever
Yeah.... is it bad that I forgot I had a hand in this?
holy moly is that you

this reminds me of when wynncraft added a raidboss to their server known as The Nameless Anomaly, and then it became a meme in the playerbase to give the anomaly a name, and they all collectively decided on Greg.

7:25 Predictions are crazy
I came here for the lore of Steve and got theory about where the name Steve came from

Some guy called one of those mobs Steve, and Steve stuck.
this is like the stevely parable
Everyone asks who is steve but no body asks how is steve😢
How are you Steve?
I think we all can agree that we called him steve before hearing his/this mobs name.
