freezer comment is a untaught tip truly awesome. i freeze mine then take them fishing and sorta burlley with them, not proven that it helps my fishing but aqnther than that dig them into the garden , my veggies love them
Hey Robbie, I’m love your videos mate 😎!!! I personally gained some Japanese cooking experience around 12ish years ago while living in Orange NSW. Huge blue yabbies that eat opera house nets like a block of cheese!! By far the best flavour experience I’ve ever had was from these Cherax destructor treats. Instructions as below; •place a huge pot on the boil containing the following: •equal amounts of water and a cheep Moscato wine 50/50 in pot. •a decent palm full of salt •cook until done (size depending) Purge in freezing ice cold water and consume. This works with any freshwater crustacean especially lobbys 🤤 Give it a crack 👌👍🤤
Jeez they looked tasty Robbie. Next time you boil a pot with that lil stove, have a look under the pot and see how the flame is contacting the pot. What you want to see is the very tip of a blue flame contacting the pot. If you have a long flame with orange tips going past the base of the pot it will take longer to boil, even though the dial is set higher. It may work more efficiently by turning it down a lil bit is what i am trying to say. Blue flame, just contacting or just not quite contacting the pot is the hottest it will get. cheers.
Got a trick “old’mate” showed me as a kid - to remove the “poo line” - before cooking turn the yabbie legs up with the tail pointing away from you, take the centre tail fin, bend it flat towards you until you hear it snap at the base, then pull it slowly away from you and it will pull the poo line out 👍🏻
Thanks for the vid. I'm a newby and have only tried them once I purged them in clean water from my RO Filter for 24hrs then dumped them into the freezer for a short time them stripped them and fried in Garlic butter and Ginger will boil them next time like u have done maybe add some white wine to the water though.
We get yabbies purge them in rain water for a few days then put them in the freezer (to have a nap) then we put them in ferociously hot water with spices, salt, garlic and lemon (dont be shy with any of these). Anyway man keep up the amazing work.
That orange-ish/yellowish substance inside the body cavity that comes out with part of the tail is amazing. You should try it with the tail and claw meat. For me, I've always removed the tail, then the shell surrounding the tail meat, popped the tail meat in my mouth and sucked on the torso of the Crawfish (yabbie). It's just some of the inner organs of the animal and not the excrement vein. You can do the same thing with lobster and crabs. No one mentioned it in the comments, so I thought I would. Cheers!
you did great job showing how to cook them..my son and l have followed your instructions and just cooked our first yabbies off my property up here in COOLAH..thanks champ
Im live in Indiana and someone gave me frozen Yabbies. I'm watching your demonstration. Thankyou very much. I think you are great! Please do more videos!
Pretty fancy Robbie. Any we caught, that were too big for bait, went straight into a billy full of boiling creek water on the campfire. Fish, straight on the barby plate or into the coals , if we caught any. Often we just enjoyed the yabbies. Nothing like finding an out or the way dam somewhere and pulling in a 5 gallon tin bucket half full of monster yabbies... helped saving the dam walls from complete destruction by them.
Personally I do a purge in tap water, the chlorine makes them regurgitate and I think they taste better after. Also the best way to do them humanly is to put them in ice slurry, it send them to hibernation and then drop them into the boil. If the temp drops a little they are out to it anyway so it's double safe :) Gotta go get me a feed after the video though lol Add a little garlic for something different, goes awesome!
Mmmm garlic! I wonder f there is a way that I can include ginger in my recipe? I am a huge ginger fan. Great idea, ice slurry+boil I like that idea a lot. I am far from a greenie, but believe in as quick a kill as possible with anything. Thanks for the tip mate!
Thx for the vid i just shelled a kilo worth from mildura and used them to make yabie rolls very tasty and similar to cleani g like prawns. I love the mustard I think its the brains tbh.
I'm from the southern US. where did the name yabbies come from, we call them crawfish or crawdads here, and they are WAY smaller than the one your showing
Nice video Rob, what i would do and have done when cleaning them ready to eat, don't wash the mustard off in fresh water, it takes a bit of the taste away, try and use the water you cooked them in. Maybe wait until it cools down first. I think i might go for a drive to Blanchtown (i live in Adelaide) on the River Murray soon to get a feed now that i'm drooling for a feed of Yabbies.
Consider using an induction hot plate when you are cooking around the house. Pro: Better quicker heat than the little gas bottle. Con: You do have to plug it in to an electric plug.
Have you ever tried the brown hard rapt Waxed string, The yabbies cling on on slow retrieval.......its amazing, I had many catchers of 4/5/6 on one line at one time before the bait Robbie alexandah
Awesome video robbie!!! I only ever thought of cooking the easy way with just boiling water! But I might try and get some big yabbies to cook up your way😀
Great content. This sounds yummy. I usually do cajun.also, steaming is a good way too, but dropping in the boiling water first for instant death seems a respectful practice. In my country, when we clean the poo out, we call it deveining.
Thanks so much for this video first time I had yabbies I cooked them in plain water so they didn’t have much flavour and I haven’t had them since now I think I’ll try them again
I know this an old video mate but The kids and I have watched it twice !! Really enjoyed it mate! How about a cook combo of a nice trout and some of these beaut yabbie tails!!
Hi nate thanks so much for your kind words. What a fantastic idea. Maybe when the weather warms up and the yabbies start biting I can do that. Thanks mate. 👍
Hello robie, im curiiouse about what software u use to edit and make your videos, also where do u get your awesomly clear audio from that u use b4 and after your videos?
With the poo line there is a trick before you peel them grab the back little fin and twist it and pull than the poo shoot will come strait out without pilling the top off
Hi Robbie. Just a quick question please mate. A few days ago I was watching one of your videos on how to humanely kill yabbies. I recall that you took the live yabbie, twisted its tail and separated it from the upper part of the body. What I then recall you doing was taking the centre fin on the tail; twisting it and pulling it away from the tail thus removing the POO line. from memory, the Yabbie was live when you separated the tail from the body which also killed it instantly. After the yabbie was put to sleep, you removed the claws. Can you please confirm this method mate.
Really liked this vid mate, great work. The depth and hints you gave throughout, from shore to plate was awesome. RobbiesFishingAndShithotCheekyNibbles!
Watching that dude rinse the good stuff off of that meat is going to give me nightmares. It's the Australian equivalent of wasting crab here in southern Maryland. That yellow stuff tastes even better than the meat!!!
Hey rob do you have any good ideas on some good yabbying spots I've got a few hoops nets and have just started I tried Ringwood lake and and another creek but I got nothing. (The water in the creek was shallow). Any tips on spots would be great.
Is it just me, or does Robbie sound like a fishing doppleganger for Chopper Reid? We get red claw crayfish in QLD, but it's best to purge them, as they are gritty & dirty & taste like swamp. You have to cook in salt water to enhance the flavour of flesh. Or better still, blanch in hot salty water, peel, and pan fry with other condiments.
Thanks heaps Wixy. Hey guess what? I am coming to Shepparton this Friday! Trelleys are holding an event at the Shepparton showgrounds and I am going to be there mingling with people. You should come along.
Hi Robbie. Going out this weekend, thanks for the tips. One thing, a mate of mine kills them first with a small sharp pair of scissors to the brain. What do you think? May save some time?
Hey Phillip, good luck on the weekend mate. I have heard of people doing this with a skewer through the head. I am unsure, something about it does not resonate well with me. I am not sure that I trust the technique to kill the yabby quickly as they're such a tough species, in saying that it may very well work perfectly and I am just not convinced.
You blokes are missing out. We call them crawfish in Louisiana and no proper Cajun would waste their time boiling less than 1 stone of them. The seasonings you use are up to your tastes, with salt always being used heavily. Getting the pot to a rolling boil is correct. But you need a gas burner that has the btu output to keep it boiling. Use a stockpot with basket strainer to allow you to lower all yabbies in at the same time. We also boil small potatoes, half ears of corn, and halved onions in the stock before adding the crawfish. Potatoes should be almost done before adding yabbies and corn. Yabbies don’t need more than 5 minutes in the stock if the water remains at a full boil. When you break the tail off, you’re supposed to suck the juices from the head, some Cajuns even squeeze the shell to crack the skull open. Then you certainly do NOT rinse off the yellow fat from the tail meat! Coonasses, another name for Cajuns, don’t even remove the poop chute, that’s why we purge them in saltwater. But seriously, who the hell cooks 12 crawfish/yabbies!
This video has made me hungry.
What a great day out for a young lad.

You can purge with fresh water and give them peas and carrots to eat and doesn’t hurt them
Add some cayenne pepper (red pepper) to the mix and you're all set to go. YUM!
You could make stock from the shells
Great video Robbie. Yum-oh.👍👍👍
Thanks mate. Beautiful eating for sure. I habe another yabby cooking video coming out tomorrow night but it's not very successful. LOL
