Morris Minor Gearbox & Diff first oil change for me! Didn't know oil could smell so bad!

  • 1961 Morris Minor 100 Traveller long term ownership, and yet I've never changed the Gearbox or Diff oil myself. Time to rectify that, but not everything goes to plan.
    Tools needed:
    3/8" square socket drive
    20w/50 engine oil
    SAE90 GL-4 Gear Oil
    Fluid Lubricant Pump
In hindsight, I would jack the car on the side, remove the offside rear wheel and refill the Diff from the side next time to avoid the overspill. We live and learn!
Please remember, I am not a trained mechanic and what I do may not be the best / correct way but works for me. Videos are made as a guide of how I do / did it rather than a bible for others to follow.
    Thanks for watching.

Great video. When i bought my moggy 2 years ago i changed all the fluids straight away to be on the safe side. I stuck in 20w 50 into the gearbox as that is what is recommended. Nothing wrong with using a ratchet as long as you dont use force. Just nip up.

Thank you for your comment. I had been lazy and had the car serviced at various places, so assumed the fluids that needed changing, had been. Goes to show its worth double checking 👍🏼

Interesting that the Minor gearbox takes 20w/50 engine oil… presumably a BMC thing since the Mini and 1100/1300 (and Metro !) had the gearbox sharing the engine oil. Wonder if Midgets were the same ?

One other thing you put 29.50 multigrade oil in the gear ox it should be straight 30 grade.kevin

20w/50 seems to be a popular choice on the MMOC forums, so I went with it as my very old manual suggested many older oil makes and grades. It's hard to know what's best.

Please please don't use rachets to undo or tighten not and bolts .use Tommy bar that's why you have one in the socket set.another thing I noticed was a longer bolt on the propshaft than the others .it could put your shaft out of balance.just two things that get on my nerves when I see it.thanks Kevin.

I'll check that bolt. Thanks for pointing it out.
Why not use a ratchet? It's more convenient than the bar in many situations. Am always happy to learn something new. 👍🏼

using a rachet it has more chance of slipping or ripping the teeth of the ratchet and rendering it useless and smashing your knuckles ask me how i know @@workinprogress1098
