    Chris, the Cade media podcast is way different. Sometimes I think they're still searching for an identity. Francis is rarely there, Jimmie plays host yet Emily appears to be doing a ton of leg work without being recognized. Their subject matter is more British centric whereas yours doesn't hit hard with the local Aussie scene yet it's giving a world scene through the eyes of UA-cam with an Aussie flavor.
    Schedule your show for whenever it's convenient for you guys IMO. You two work well together and your content hasn't gotten old yet.

    Materials engineer here. The higher stiffer grade carbon is more brittle. In most engineering applications it's balancing act. You can have something extremely stiff but then you run the risk of cracking easier or you can be extremely flexible and resilient. This is the case in metals too. You can make steel extremely extremely stiff through various heat treatment methods but then it will crack very easily.

    • @jameseastwood402
      @jameseastwood402 6 місяців тому

      Doesn't layup and quantity determine stiffness rather than carbon 'grade?'

    • @joelecho
      @joelecho 6 місяців тому +6

      @@jameseastwood402 You are right that those two are also contributors, but higher modulus carbon is stiffer, which allows manufacturers to make lighter frames with it because they are able to use less carbon in certain areas, or modify the layup because those properties. Ultimately, all 3 of those things work together to determine the feel and the properties of the bike.
      But stiffer material is by nature, more brittle, and that stiffer, higher modulus material is required to make the stiffer frames. Or lighter frames of the same stiffness because a stiffer material means you can use less of it.
      (Not a materials engineer, but also work in mechanical engineering)

      That's where the resin comes in. There's no excuse for it.

    • @jameseastwood402
      @jameseastwood402 6 місяців тому

      @@adamjd7645 yep. That's what I'm getting at. I'm pretty confident the cracked rim happened after the tyre blew off. Awaiting evidence otherwise.

    • @joelecho
      @joelecho 6 місяців тому +4

      @@adamjd7645 I don't think they are making excuses for failed parts or failed rims, but Chris and Jessie were discussing whether or not high modulus carbon is more or less fragile, and they are just letting them know that yes, absolutely a stiffer lighter material will be more fragile if say, dropped at the coffee shop.
      There is no excuse for using inappropriate materials in say, a rim. But when a bike gets stiffer and lighter it DOES inherently become more brittle than previous versions. Things like layup can mitigate that but ultimately its pure physics and there is no way around it. And so the poster wasn't excusing that, just explaining that this will always be the nature of that relationship.

    MvP is the poster boy for 3 Canyon bikes for different events: the Inflite cx bike, the Aeroroad & the Lux mtb. He wins on each bike. So it's like sponsoring 3 riders and with the crossover, he might widen the market for each bike. If you are say a roadie he might encourage you into wanting to try cross or XC racing. He has already done some gravel, so that could well be an extension of his marketing power in the future - though at the 1st gravel worlds he used a road bike.

      As for the niceness if it translated in to less competitive racing then maybe , however, pros are suggesting it's less nice with more attacks and less respect given etc. When I played Cricket there was a lot around playing hard on the pitch but sitting down and having a drink together after the match. You could have all kinds of abuse hurled at you and then have a drink & a laught after the match.

    When people say “I’m getting in to road cycling what bike do I get?” I point them to a used endurance carbon bike in their size. Like a Defy or Roubaix or Domane. Probably 105 or whatever is a good deal. Leave them money to buy nice tires and a comfortable saddle.

  • @rickmancini772

    Regarding the hookless tire blowoff, the rim was only cracked. If there was a complete collapse of the rim, then the tire would likely disengage, whether hooked or hookless. With this cracked rim, the tire would likely stay on if it was a hooked system. The impact blew the tire off of the hookless rim and also cracked the rim. The crack did not directly cause the blowoff.

    • @jeffvalore5010
      @jeffvalore5010 6 місяців тому +7

      I was going to say this as well; I suspect hooks would have helped the tire stay on the cracked rim better, and maybe allow the rider to come to a better-controlled stop. Still don't see what benefit hookless is supposed to provide, other than a manufacturing cost decrease (revenue increase) for manufacturers.

      No, 28mm is fine according to Zipp’s own website. Haven’t seen anywhere what pressure he was riding. In any case a 1mm tolerance is stupid. Tyres bulge out more than that depending on the rim type so do you go by the factory claimed width or do you need clippers every time you try a new tyre? Too complicated and unnecessary - I just want to ride my bike.

    Regarding "Podium Love In" - It seems like there is an assumption that aggression and personal distaste for your competitors gives you the highest competitive advantage, channeling the aggression into motivation to push hard on the bike. That can be true for many, but I feel like it's not true for everyone. For some people, a more playful attitude reduces pressure and allows for the right flow state of great performance. The mental states of high performers are diverse.

      You don't have to hate your competitor to compete against them with everything you have. It's just such a stupid concept. We want them to be less cordial becuase it's more entertaining? I've been through (what I consider to be, personally) an interesting journey from being a fairly obsessive cyclist and racer (albeit not a great one) to becoming a dad and having very little time to train or race. My first goal, after having a few years completely off the bike, was to get back into 5-6 hours of training a week (in my lunch breaks mainly) and see, firstly, if I could survive an A grade crit, which was the main type of racing I used to do. Then I tried to advance from there. It's been humbling, but has also been great to get back into that scene, for the competitive outlet and for the social aspect, as I tend not to be able to do any bunch rides. There have been some successes and failures, based on my own benchmarks I've set myself, but all in all, it's been a lot of fun.

They told me to remove the tyre and tubeless valve and drain the water from the rim that way!! WTF (I have their response in an email). Guess what, the version 2 of that rim which was marketed as a gravel rim had drain holes. Zipp are questionable at best if you ask me!! Great episode, keep them going. 👍🏻

    I don't think there is an alterior motive to Pogacar's behavior. I think this is just who he is. Personally, I like the fact he can be competitive, dominate races and still have a good time and congratulate others afterwards. It's nice to see from my perspective.

    I hit a mound of rocks that fell off the back of a landscaping truck on McCarrs creek rd with my Giant SLR1 hookless rims @ 45kph & the tyre blew off & entangled itself around the rim bringing me down as I could no longer steer the front wheel. I think one of the major issues with hookless rims is tyre pressure & tyre width is key. 25mm tyres on hookless rims should be avoided at all costs due to the higher psi. The fact Giant sold their road bikes with 25mm tyres for their hookless rims I think was negligent to say the least. Also the relationship between the rim inner width & tyre width is very important. I now ride on 28mm tyres with the 19.4mm inner width Giant rims & so far the rims have been bomb proof.

    Events: At 30 started doing events and already had 3kids by then. I've never had more than 8hrs to train etc etc. So of course I'm nowhere near the front in mass start events/races. Usually ~3rd group. But I like to see how well I can do on those 6 to 8hrs training a week. And see if I can beat my previous placing and time PB's etc. And that's the challenge. And I really enjoy it.

    JC, I'd suggest training and riding a race with a friend to help him/her complete a goal. I'm a competitive runner and usually I focus entirely on myself during training blocks. However, I recently paced a friend of mine to his first sub-3 hour marathon, and it was one of the most enjoyable and memorable things I've done. Maybe you would find some enjoyment doing the cycling equivalent! Love the show guys!

    On Pogacar. It’s called having high EQ. What is the point of blaming your teammate? He knows he’s strong enough to win GC anyways… And on that point, why are you advocating toxicity in the peloton? Being a leader and face of a sport, you want to show sportsmanship and set a good example for future generations of competitors . It also helps set a good culture not only inside the pro peloton, but also around the whole sport. Not a toxic competitive environment.

    This happened to me last year on a group ride with my 404 Firecrest Tubeless. I was going at a good pace and we crossed a railroad track. A chunk of road was missing parallel to the rails and I was able to lift the front wheel quickly, but the rear wheel hit the hole hard!! The tubeless Conti 5000 28mm S TR Tire stayed on, but I was losing pressure slowly. I was able to make it home which was 15-20 miles from home. When I got home I took the tire off and the rim was cracked across the rim bed. I was surprised it wasn't worse actually. All situations are different, but I can't really fault their wheel for this. They replaced my rear wheel without question.

      As much as people give ENVE and Zipp crap for the cost vs quality of their wheels, they stand by them. Any issues come up, they'll just replace it. I know Hambini often reams on Zipp for the quality of their hubs, but many SRAM/Zipp dealers will service them for free.

I'll still prepare as good as possible, even though I'm lacking time to do proper training... so I just go there for shit and giggles... and enjoy the atmosphere and ... going somewhere without cars, where I normally wouldn't be able to go... Chris explained it really well at the descent the other weeks... You feel like a pro if the roads are closed and you can use up parts of the road you normally couldn't

    Has that rim cracked after the tyre blew off and then impacted directly onto the hard tarmac , causing the crack🤔 So, the cracked rim being a result of the blow off, not the cause?

    - I've cracked a carbon rim without puncturing the tire twice (tubular on a road bike and on my MTB) it's not unheard of.
    - It's cute how much Jesse thinks the brands do robust stress testing on all their products (Zipp probably was able to prove that their product consistently passes the UCI requirement which are silly low and then pumps out the production)

    I vaguely remember reading that MvdP was one of the founders of what is now Alpecin-Deceuninck along with the Roodhooft brothers. And is or was a partial owner of the team. All this to say I don't see him ever leaving that team until he retires. And in the unlikely situation where he was going to leave the team, I see it like a Sagan situation where he has enough leverage that whatever team he goes to will ride Canyon. I don't think it would be unheard of for Canyon to just follow him to whatever team he chooses.

    Why are the Pros crossing disciplines? Maybe, because the sponsors tell them to do so, but its also super fun.
    Like, ive been ridden my roadbike für 25.000km in 2 years and i started to get bored by the streets. At some point you know everything that is ridable 100km around you. Then i bought myself a gravelbike and damn it opens a new world for me. So much more ways to try etc. And now I am also riding MTBs because riding downhills on a MTB is so much more fun then doing it on a gravel bike, plus it gives you better bike handling skills by doing so, even on the road.
    I think those pros do it also for fun, just like MVDP and other Pros are doing CX Races. Its just pure fun

    Below average rider here who does long rides 5 to 8 hours. I'm small guy 165cm but on the heavy side 67kg. I average 145w during my 8 hours ride so I'm not fast. This been said from my personal experience, marginal gains (aero helmet, aero kits, etc) made me gain free speed. By just changing the helmet to an aero one gained 2kph... So i think that marginal gains and weight matter more for average or below average rider because going quicker even at relatively slower speed 20 - 27kph requires significantly more effort so everything that can help is welcome. On the contrary, a strong rider can easily overcome additional 2 or 5 kg weight penalty on a hilly corse from effort perspective and ofc not from racing perspective. A stronger rider can easily average above 35kph with or without marginal aero gains. It would really be nice to dive deeper into this subject in future podcast

Great personality too, not too silly, but fun and a beast. Beyond not deep pockets I always thought campagnolo should lock down pogi as an athlete. I have never seen any testing on behalf of the foam inserts as they relate to impacts. Theoretically the air will allow more dimpling in a tire upon impact, so if you have less volume of air in the tire because mass of the insert - does the insert absorb the force of the hit--or does it compress all the force directly into the rim?
