Eye Crossing in Babies: Do They Outgrow It?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 вер 2024
- Were you told by your pediatrician or friend that your baby will outgrow their crossed eyes? Pediatric ophthalmologist, Dr. Rupa Wong, explains why this is more complicated than a yes/no answer and how to tell if your child needs to see an eye doctor. There is a lot of confusion over what is normal in a baby's visual development and what is not. When does eye crossing improve? When is esotropia worrisome? When should you be concerned if your baby or toddler is still crossing their eyes?
Covered in this video:
What is strabismus?
What is congenital esotropia?
What is delayed visual maturation?
When to take your child to the ophthalmologist for evaluation?
When is surgery necessary for eye crossing?

My son is 3 years year old and just had his surgery about a week ago at CHOCS in CA Immediately I saw the results and I am very pleased. We are very thankful for his surgeon ❤
Awesome! I'm so glad!! What is the name of your surgeon?
Dr. Rahul Bhola, Medical Director of pediatric ophthalmology
This needs to be talked about way more!! I have always always heard they will outgrow it. With a brand new nephew Im so glad to know this now.
I'm so glad the video was helpful!
My 2 yo daughter had strabismus surgery a few weeks ago and the results have been simply incredible. We are so happy we decided to go for it. Patching and glasses seems totally fruitless for a toddler.
I'm so glad it was helpful!! Thank you for sharing, Thomas.
I was born in 1993 But when I was 8 months old I got the surgery- have had 7 of them after but I have two strong eyes now but I can’t waits 3d
My child is 5months i took her to the ophthalmologist when she was 4months and they told me to take her back when she's 1year old. What can i do because I really don't want to wait. I think she has esotropia.
what did you do ?
Thank you Dr. Very enlightening. Please could you share a link to the video on your Instagram? It would help reach a wider audience
Absolutely!
My daughter done with her surgery 3 weeks ago. After 2 days her eyes are perfect but after 3 weeks again her eyes are drifting. I am so worried. will it be cured ? Does surgery works ??
Mam my daughter is 4 months old n I think she is cross eyed with one eye. Will it be corrected over time or should I had to visit an eye specialist?? Plz help me out Mam.
My daughter was 2 when I noticed it, I got her checked and her pediatric ophthalmologist said it will fix over time. I didn’t like that answer and my gut said no, so I fought for glasses, got them, then changed to a different provider who is amazing.
I am glad you found someone you are comfortable with!
Can we talk
Where you are from and pkease give me the details of doctor
Please give your number
Hey quick question did your daughter have one of her eyes go inward? And if so was it when she was watching TV or trying to focus on something did it happen? And did glasses help the issue just recently dealing with something similar wanted advice? Thank you❤
Hi Dr. Wong,
My answer is partial, since I had the problem.
Success depends on the person's motivation.
I was taught how to "Control it".
This by Playing Tennis, and other methods.
I know parents are terrified when the see "eye wonder", in a child.
I think a lot of the problem comes from some truly bad, "eye habits", some children conduct while reading.
You have my sympathy, what ever approach you choose to use.
Thanks for your excellent review!
Hi Dr Rapu, this was very helpful. I was about 5 when my strabismus started, I am in my late 20s now. It's not permanent, meaning I can make it appear straight. Would surgery be appropriate in my case?
It is possible! Definitely bring it up with your eye doctor next time you go in! Best of luck :)
Terrible thumbnail. It’s a kid’s video no
So sorry you perceived it poorly. As a peds ophthalmologist, I love the kiddos and would never mean it as a "bad" look. I meant it as more of a "worried" look.
Our 2 month-old baby brother have shown this congenital esotropia just today. It brought all of us to tears when it just doesn't stop. His eyes only go back to normal for just seconds and he's crossed eyed again. We keep him entertained or talk to him ALL THE TIME just to not keep it crossed (since it stops it). We also kept on closing his eyes expecting it to go normal when he opens it. We also massage his forehead cuz it seems effective. We can only meet a pediatrician tomorrow morning and we don't have any idea to stop seeing him that way other than making him sleep. I hope it doesn't progress to any of the complex treatments. It pains us not to see our little angel smiling.
It is so sad when our babies are experiencing issues, especially if we feel like we can't stop it. I hope you have a good visit with the pediatrician tomorrow! If you can, let me know what they say.
@@DrRupaWong hello. An update about our baby brother's condition: his cranial ultrasound showed normal results. The pediatrician referred him again to another hospital to have a CT Scan with a better pediatrician he personally know. He said it was his first time seeing our baby's case at his very young age. He also wondered why our baby's skull is fully formed at only 2 months and 9 days old. At this point, my Father doesn't have any plans on having him for further tests. He's overthinking about the expenses it will cost cuz we know and were said that it's gonna be something serious ahead.
For 2 months old is normal. If it appears after 6 months, it can be concerning. Any update?
Hello Dr. Thankyou for the clear and understandable information.
My daughter is four month old and has alternative eye crossing. i consult opthalmologist and she told me they are not doing eye muscle surgery at younger ages. What do you sugest me? i am so worried
I would get a second opinion in person if you can. I'm sorry you and baby are dealing with this. I hope you can get the help you are looking for!
Hi Dr. Can you help me? What if it just pops up at 10 months?
Your video's thumbnail is kind of offensive don't you think
I'm sorry you feel it is offensive. It is more of a "worried" look. I can see why you may perceive it negatively though.
@@DrRupaWong no it's okay, thanks for clarifying I probably should've just asked first
Thank u so much for this. My baby is 5 months and people have commented that she looks cross eyed. She does have hooded Asian eyes. I’m going to ask for a referral to an eye doctor just incase.
Of course! I'm glad to help. If you have any other topics you would like me to cover just let me know. 💗 I will be hoping for a good result from the doctor.
Hi my baby 4 mth he straight and looks cross eyes its it normal please helps.
My poor baby has a cross eye 😭
When my daughter was born ,the midwife told us about this. Now my daughter is two.
This is the best video I've seen on this
I appreciate it! Thank you for watching!
What is your opinion of vision therapy?
It depends upon what it is being used to treat.
@@DrRupaWong I'm wondering if it's effective in treating adults with eye focusing issues like poor accommodative facility?
Very informative! Thanks for sharing! We were told my son had pseudostrabismus when he was a baby, but he just turned 7 & my husband & I have been noticing that he appears to have intermittent exotropia in his left eye. Usually we see it when he's tired or his eyes are unfocused. We'll be taking him to the doc asap!
Q
Hi dr. My son was diagnosed with mild CP at the age of 6 month. After taking his second shots I notice a day or 2 after his eyes keep moving back and forth then I took him to the hospital and that’s when they told me he has CP. he has seizures also infantile spasms that’s the of seizures. His eyes never came back straight from then it looks pretty lazy in the left one. I have been to the eye clinic all year around all they tell me is the nerves in the left eye is weak. I keep asking how can I help all they said is give him lots of greens. I’m very sad n don’t know what to do. I would love to get some advice n more info from you. I can send u pictures also. I wait on your reply pls. Thank u
Elaine, I am so sorry you are having to go through this. I will link a video I have done about patching treatments for a lazy eye in this comment. If you are not happy with your doctors advice, I would go to another to get a second opinion.

Hello do you have a video in it yet?
My friends daughter had it a d it went away .Saw the child myself and it is true.
My daughter is 1 and she barely started crossing one eye is she still young enough to get this procedure done?????? We need help .
Hi, our little girl is 18 months old. She crosses her eyes now and again. It's not very often at all but she does do it every so often. How much eye crossing would you say is a concern and would you recommend getting a referral for her to see someone and get it checked out? Thanks
Next time you go to her doctor appointment just ask them if they think you should get a referral. It can't hurt to get it checked out if you're worried!
@@DrRupaWong thanks for your reply. Yes I think that's a good idea, no harm in getting it checked.
@@michaeltunnicliff4244 Let me know what they say! Hope everything is okay for baby. :)
Having eye crossed at birth is natural. I have 3 children when they were a baby I always noticed their one eye sometimes go to its corner while the other is ok. Thanks God we have a book titled "Where there is no doctor" btw i live in the Philippines. What i did is i cover the good eye with my hand only lol, baby will resist but just do it .. i think I did it 2-3 times until it turns ok. All of them I did that and they have a beautiful symmetrical eyes. Thanks to that book.
My daughter is 11 months old and we just found out she has this in one eye an that she would need glasses
is cross eye can be inherited from mother or father? I have friend that all of his child are cross eye.
How late is too late for surgery for babies
I was 6 when I had my operation. I don't think I would have outgrown it. My eye was going on adventures constantly haha.
I am 17 and I have esotropia would you recommend surgery for it
My baby's one eye is not moving outward she is 5 months old. But she is looking upward, downward, and inward.
Can u explain this plz?
Hey please same thing happening to my 5 months old baby
How is your baby now?
Thanks a bunch. My son is 5years old and we just noticed intermittent cross eye on the left eye. Previous pictures of him from age 4yrs downward did not reveal any cross eye. Also he sometimes rub the left eye. Please what can be the cause and please advise on what best can be done to treat him. I’m in Africa where we don’t have the level of expertise of the western world. Thanks in advance
What did u end up doing
Hey Dr can you please me
Internal strabismus can be treated with oriental medicine without the need for surgical intervention
Do u know anyone who used oriental meds?
Thank You
Hi is Anisometropia something you can see my daughter have refractive error
I had crossed eyes as a baby and it didn’t go away as u said , I did eye excercises for years to over come it. I am 52 years old now and it only shows up if I am really tired.
Just found out that I only use 1 eye at a time to see and when that one eye gets tired, it automatically switches to the other and I know, no difference. Does this have a name?
My daughter is 1 years old and she has crossed eyes I did not know she should have gotten surgery before she is 1 they suggested patching and glasses I will continue bringing this up until some listens to me I brought it up sense she was young smh but not all but some think they know your child better than you.
