Today, we are back with a build that wants to jump out of its skin and prove itself worthy every moment it's on the road. This E85-tuned 2001 Mazda NB Miata has been equipped with a Gen II Garrett GTX2860R turbocharger which is in constant disagreement with the rear tires. It's the kind of battle that separates the ordinary from the frightening. This turbo, in addition to the built 1.8L internals, allows it to make a ridiculous 470 WHP and 462 lb-ft of torque, but is it too much? Let's jump in this monster to see if an MX-5 chassis will survive the dance with this much boost.

This is literally a reincarnation of Brooke's rx7. Same color and rims. Rip to that beast.
Its going to need a lot of chassis bracing and 10 inch tires to even be competitive. It will also need cooling vents in the hood, turbo miatas get HOT. Even with a full race setup it will still get beat by miatas at 350 whp because they will get on the power much sooner with a smaller turbo.
Its an absolutely beautiful miata and great sleeper setup, but it will be a handful on track.

@@oscarlainz The 5-speed becomes a roll of the dice above 220-240wtq, and that's assuming no abuse (aka wheel hops and clutch kicks). The 1.8 diffs have been know to hold well over 350wtq, the housing itself is the weakest point. Options are upgrading to an n/a FC diff housing or having plates welded into the stock ears.
Isn't 470whp with a 2860 kind of on the really high side ? I feel like most 2860 builds I see have like 350-380 max

my old boss had an mx5 convertible, it was always well looked after and i always had to marvel at the car. but this one is the best mx5 I've ever seen!
THIS is how you do a car. Exterior mods just a nice paint job and a good set of wheels, all the real mods in the suspension and engine bay.

Surely this is boost by gear or speed. It shouldn't hook in 2nd with that power. And no roll bar? I feel like I need a roll bar in my stock nb let alone with that much power. Each to their own but this is sketchy...
Hard dog roll bar was purchased but was still being shipped unfortunately during the video. Car is also tuned to hit full boost only at 3rd, 4rth and 5th. 1st and 2nd gears are completely dialed down to achieve traction. Thanks for supporting Marcus and his channel. Hope you enjoyed the video.

Absolutely no way. Mine is 350 and way more wild. He doesn't give alot of key info. No compression ratio. No boost numbers named. He said the wrong name for the turbo. No coolant reroute. This build is trash and the dude is lying

And also you don't fit 225's on 15x7" RPF1's.
You can even see that the tire says 205 if you pause in 1080p at the right moment of the side view
So yeah you're probably right. I didn't even think the 2860r would make much more than 450whp. And the transmission definitely wouldn't last long at above 350wtq if it was a 6speed. Of course that depends on how it's driven and what type of clutch is being used (sprung or unsprung) and diff/engine mount bushings. Miata 5 speeds don't last long over 240wtq. And the only way to make a 6speed last long is to use a sprung clutch and keep the wtq under 300wtq. What was it he said, 450+wtq??! Lol
It's possible with the built bottom end and if he lowered the compression to 9:1 vs 10:1 stock but the vvt cylinder head comes with some of the weakest valve springs compared to the 94-97 valve springs so that's quite a bit of force against the intake valves even at 7k rpm. The main thing here though is the transmission lol that first and second gear WOT would've blown both 5spd and 6spd had it hooked. And you wouldn't hook 2nd or 3rd with 450+wtq.
450tq at the crank is more realistic
Anyhow shade aside just having posted a comment will help the UA-cam algorithm lol and it's a nice clean build and it's cool to see he's happy coming from the Porsche boxster
My only criticism is to try to be a lot more accurate on the build details
@@Nasonix2 yeah its really annoying. I wish he would of given factual information. It's obvious he paid someone to do all the labor. Its a shame the channel owner didnt recognize all the flaws. When I clicked in the thumbnail I was expecting to see a miata that was way better than mine. What I see here In this video is one that is much worse. I have the VVT head and it's crap. He's absolutely not making 450+ with a stock VVT head, and manifold. He'd need a bp4w and higher RPM to get 450+ also at 470whp hes not going to have 450wtq. That isn't bow a 4cyl works
All of this is totally right, turbo name being wrong aside (and max flow of the turbo he meant to say prob makes 450 with the exhaust wheel almost popping out), I have a built 2.2 stroker running an efr 7670 (4b11t)running 35 psi and my wheel tq is 520 and whp is 625, so now way in hell a smaller displacement non stroker motor will make as much tq as hp.
Even at stock power levels, the NBs I used to have had noticeable cowl shake. The chassis would benefit from a proper roll bar and the Flyin' Miata butterfly chassis brace too. Better stiffness and safety all around.
Hard dog roll bar was ordered but unfortunately was still in shipping during the video shoot. Definitely doing some chasis stiffening in the near future before doing any auto cross. I appreciate all the suggestions and criticisms as I keep learning about the trade. Thanks for watching the video and supporting Marcus' channel.

It’s a wrap
The early Miata engine is built on the turbo mazda hot hatches of the late 80s'. That engine has oil squirters unter the pistons and a pretty stout bottom stock...not 500 hp stout, because that is just crazy, but double stock horsepower? Sure, no problem. Over about 250 rwhp, things start to break. How's the rear diff? A Cadillac CTS rear pumpkin was a popular swap for higher power levels.
with that power I think you need that roll bar...stat

first thing I did when I bought my NB was install a hard dog roll bar. It’s still a small death trap of a car, but now at least I have a chance of survival if I roll over god forbid. The added chassis rigidity just from the roll bar alone is also really noticeable.
@@monstercameron you have a hard time rolling a low slung car like a Miata on the street. In addition to this if you are in such a situation where you could roll it (off a cliff or something) then the rest of the car is still made of tinfoil. But more power =\= roll bar, depends how you use the car.

Anyone bashing the roll bar recommendation needs to look up what it looks like when u loose control on a back road and run the Miata up a ditch or bank on the side of the road to have it land upside down. Warning. You don't want to even see.
Not only does a roll bar fix a lot of the chassis flex and handling it also will save your life and the passenger. There's foam padding that's meant to go over the main hoop to protect yourself from it when it's driven on the street without a helmet
how's this planting 470 on those bicycle tires i feel like it should be spinning tires in 4th at that power level on those rubber bands...? also at 470whp, i'm suprised this guy didn't give us the run down on his trans and diff situation? or did he? I skipped through bc it's kind of a long vid, i'm genuinely interested in the trans and diff hes running though.
Stock trans and diff and surprisingly still holding. It's also boost by gear. 1st and 2nd gear doesn't hit full boost to allow traction.

Yep, I have driven a 420whp miata on 245 ar1s WITH boost by gear and tps and it is significantly more rowdy than this.
@@NippyMoto I bet street gas tune is very conservative and E85 is full send but not used in the video. Stock trans, axles, diff and driveshaft wouldn't hold 500whp long. You also would be goofy to drive that power with stock brakes....
@@ryanmccormick I've read many forum posts of racers saying stock brakes with minor upgrades hold up very well on these cars. Upgraded pads, quality rotors, steel lines and good fluid go a long way.
Previous owner of my NA miata took it to the track often (fun not competition) and only ran upgraded pads and he said he never had an issue. Just be sure to change fluid more often.
Car is tuned to only hit full boost at 3rd, 4rth and 5th gear. 1st and 2nd gear are significantly dialed down to achieve traction.

Full disclosure, I completely butchered the turbo during the recording lol. And yes I still have lots to learn about the car but I get a lot of help from Evolution Auto. I try my best to learn on my own by watching other people's builds and ask a lot of questions from the car community.
The rpf1's are actually 15x8's on 205's. Marcus got the tire size wrong lol.
I am running stock tranny, upgraded clutch, 1000 injectors which was not mentioned in the video. I also have a hardtop but the wrap wasn't ready during the shoot. Also had a harddog roll bar that was in transit. I didn't expect to make this much power at all with 22lbs of boost but we aren't going anymore for now since I'm running a stock tranny. I appreciate the comments good and bad. Hope you guys enjoyed the video and thanks for continuing to support the channel. Il post the dyno results down below. Thanks!

I'm not calling you a liar but I'm gonna need to see the dyno for proof. I find it pretty hard to believe, on stock intake, TB and a log mani that it's making 470 to the wheel.

his numbers are inflated because the correct data was not inputed correctly on the dyno. I checked the website on the tuner and they listed it as having a 3.33 rear gear - if its a usdm 5 speed its a 4.10 if its a 6speed manual its a 3.9...
with that said the difference in power is inflated 20-23%
I have a 350 whp miata and on those roads with those tyres the car would be wheel spinning like crazy if it was over 350 ish. However, lovely car none the less.

During 99 there were only 4 cars that made 400 at the wheels and was daily driven. 1 was a na miata, a acura integra gsr, Mitsubishi eclipse gst spyder and a Nissan 200sx sentra. Man, now you can build a car like ordering a pizza, while we had to make our parts and while on a top ramen budget. Y'all can thank us😁😂😉 for your abundant of parts available now.

I built an NA Miata with around 350whp, and the owner only wants 500whp for bragging rights. He doesn’t even have a proper alignment. This car was ‘built for the gram’ and somehow ended up good. That’s my take on it

The power absolutely outweighs a few of the other supporting mods. Would love to see some flares, fatter wheel/tire setup, and a some chassis bracing. I am concerned for the owner's safety as much as you are haha.

Doesn't seem like 400+. I'm at ~200hp with a piggy backed Garret 2560R and I break loose a lot easier, w/ 225's.
I don't think anyone believes the 470 number. But my NA is on 205s and making 225 WHP/210 torque (dyno tuned) and can't break loose at all. The tire compound is way, WAY more important than the width.

That's not a big turbo... My GTX2871(82A/R) isn't even a "big turbo" for my 95 Miata. The GTX3582 is a big turbo for a 1.8.
