Lead programmer of the game here. It is great to see this game still lives in the hearts of many Spyro fans, as much as many original Spyro fans did not like it due to the focus on combat and action this reboot had. And yes, there are many things that we would have liked to make better.
I just finished to write this response under the other comment of a developer, before reading this, so I will just rewrite it here for you as well: Omg I can’t believe you were actually a member of the development team of this fantastic game. I love that I have the opportunity to talk to you. I want to thank you from all of my heart for the magical experience you gifted me. This game is a huge part of my childhood, and I miss it so much. How would I love to get a remaster or even a bad porting on pc or ps4/ps5 (I guess asking for a remake would be too much) of the legend of Spyro trilogy. I hope you’re doing good, you have all my respect man. And I hope this franchise will somehow be revived someday
hello, i have a question about the ds version, some, or maybe a lot of it is really different. i started the console version this evening a lonnng time after having played the ds version and I'm just now seeing how different it is, and I'm wondering, was there cut content you made ds exclusive, or is it only because of console limitations? for example the ice viking has an entire fort and bridge we never see, as well as the jail volteer is stuck in, and the puzzles which i absolutely loved as a kid.
thank you for creating this absolute gem and the start of one of my favorite game trilogies, these darker more fantasy inspired games inspired me to become a writer and ignite my love for fantasy stories which without you and your team/ developers i may not have found, thank you
This was actually the first real Spyro game I ever played. Borrowed it from a friend and nearly didn't give it back because I loved the game so much. The combat, combos, and leveling up your different attributes and the different biomes and settings with a darker undertone really showed the love you guys put into this game. Just recently got the reignited trilogy and it always reminds me of my time playing this game. You guys really made a hidden gem here and I can't thank you enough for experimenting with different styles, especially combat.
You make my childhood a lot better my mom divorced from my dad and a week later she buyed me this game and I can flee into this wonderful world I have to thank you for this and your team thank you for building this safe for me❤
@@bigboispyro I thought, maybe the reason was Spyro, at it's core, is a kid's franchise, and as such they're worried how their children, siblings, nieces, nephews, etc will get traumatised by Spyro throwing punches.
Hey Addy, I was the lead environment artist on this game, it's so cool seeing the game getting love all these years later:) Was great to watch:) I posted this for the old team to watch, Very much appreciated:))
2:36 That music is SO visceral I can literally feel it in my chest. Something about this game in particular resonated with me growing up. I played it through multiple times, and while the plot isn't unique (a pretty basic hero's journey), it was told with such passion that I couldn't help but relate to it. A New Beginning was exactly the story and escapist outlet that I needed when it came out, and it's no small shame that it is as overlooked as it is today.
Watching this again and I must say, I REALLY love The Legend of Spyro! I remember the first time I met the game, I was confused at how different he was compared to the previous Spyro games, but once I played A New Beginning, it changed my life forever. Instantly I fell in love with this world, its dark yet stunning environment, frenetic and varied combat system, unique characters, and epic story of self discovery and world salvation with many deep and special moments along the way. It gets repetitive sometimes but still I enjoy a lot everything about this game. I'll never get tired of playing it. It's that beautiful.
I don't know about anyone else, but I must say that the sound design for this game is absolutely beautiful. Almost ASMR to the ears. I'm not exaggerating when I say that the pause screen alone has a nice, pleasant sound to it.
Loved this game when it came out, what still sticks with me is its beautiful musical theme that really brings home the feeling of hope & warmth derived from long state of melancholy & desolation, and its so well personified in Spyro's relationship with Ignitous, hearing him speak felt so heart breaking, that It motivates you to restore hope, probably first character i ever emphasized with in a game.
I still revisit this game. I had a troubled childhood and this game was the shining light on a lot of days. I used my creative brain to conjure the characters as my imaginary friends. And very rarely I'll revisit Ignitus just to hear his voice. I'm 23 now. And I've still not entirely shelved this game. I even have a giant red diamond shaped gem of glass that i use when im stuck writing. Its nostalgia that holds me but the writing i feel is one that really works well. The character is the typical heros journey, however as the trilogy progresses there is no return. Theres nothing to return to. Spyro and eventually Cynder get lost on the heroes path and it ends up with their sacrifice in the volcano. We know it'll happen but by the time we arrive the characters have grown from the first game and i think the trilogy gets better as it goes along. And the music! Oh don't get me started on the music. Absolutely magical and downright amazing in sections. (Valley of Avalar)
I was led to believe for years that the combat in these games was awful or button mashy. I completed a collection and played the first two in September. It was honestly great, and I loved the way the combat worked. I played Ninja Gaiden Black & 2, so The Eternal Night wasn't a problem for me. In fact, TEN to me is brilliant, and the best in the trilogy. There isn't a moment that annoys me in it. Playing TEN from ANB is like jumping from Ninja Gaiden 1 to 2. Everything is running at twice the speed, there are more enemies, you can get three or four shotted, yes, but you also kick arse yourself. I made a really long unscripted tier list delving into the Spyro games, I dunno if that would interest you, but it's so nice to see analyses of this trilogy. I agreed with most of what was said, and I hope you do the other two games. :>
I love The Eternal Night, the atmosphere and story felt like an evolution of the first game. Yes, assets were reused, but they were used in a way that helps elevates the platforming and level design. I definitely think the developers put a lot of heart in TEN ❤
Man the way you mentioned that you have to experiment yourself with your powers is so spot on. I have always experimented and allowed myself to have fun with the legend of spyro combat system. So many the legend of spyro haters completely miss that part and writes the legened of spyro as a boring spam fest while eternal night is too difficult. But in eternal night you have to experiment, I did not find the game that much more difficult since I experimented in how I used my power there, but people just ignores the aspect of experimenting and just spam the same move, and that is something you dont want to do in eternal night, you will get punished most of the time, if you did the things that you could get away with in the new beginning.
That is why eternal night will always be my favorite in the series, because it rewards experimentation by punishing the aspect that made new beginning a button mash in the first place.
I just finished A New Beginning a week or two ago (And beat Eternal Night last night, pun unintended) and as easy as I find to be once you dominate the Electric, Ice and Earth breaths, I think that's the point, it's just a neat little fantasy story everyone can enjoy (Unlike Eternal Night which is "kinda" unbalanced in favor of the enemies gameplay wise)
I never got the impression ANB was trying to be for everyone. You have to really commit to learning the breath types to get something out of the experience. I'm glad you found it enjoyable though
Hey Addy, are you done being awesome yet? :V Also embarrassingly I got stuck on one of the breath tutorials when I tried to play this years ago, which is annoying.
While we were developing the game, I assigned the tutorial levels to one coder on my team. Since that was his sole task for a few weeks, he got really good at the tutorials and made them for his skill level, forgetting that they were intended for people new to the game. I couldn't even get through some of the tutorials myself. We had to tell him to dial them back _a lot_, but I still think overall they were too difficult.
Did we all live the same lives lol? I vividly remember getting stuck in one of the tutorials too but I think one of the triggers on my Xbox controller was broken, I tried so hard to find ways to bypass it but I couldn’t until I got a new controller
I always though a new beginning was alright, and i also thought Dawn of the Dragon, but eternal night was honestly my least favorite spyro game on console.

I don't why people hate "button mashing" so much. Me personally, it gives me a feeling of adrenaline
Often, the people who complain the most about button mashing in games like this are the ones least willing to try new things.
