Sold a 2001 not long ago, it was 14 years old, over 200,000 km's on the clock, still as tight as a drum. Not a single squeak or rattle in the interior, doors still shut with more of a solid thump than in many new cars. It was a car truly beyond it's time. Compare it to a Passat, Mondeo or Vectra from that period and they seem silly in comparison. Laguna is about 2 classes above each of them in terms of how it feels to drive. It's still as comfortable as any new car in the segment today, still has better sound proofing than many new cars (for example Insignia is louder inside, more tire and wind noise), seats are like sofas, and it actually handles well. It is soft, but never uncontrolled and always feels very stable and safe.
What about reliability ?

This isn’t true, my family has had 3 of them (don’t know why as they all had problema) and they all begin to have a lot of interior noises after a while, and I mean a lot of noise. The Dashboard is like a metallica concert. As for reliability, stay away from the diesel engines, they are terrible, very unreliable. My family had to change more water pumps than in any car, only to never solve a water leak. This happened on both 1.9 dci and the newer 2.0 dci and they were both bought brand new. Only one example, don’t get me started on EGR or timing belts. The unreliability on lagunas is what makes them so cheap nowadays and what killed this model. It’s what made Renault replace the name for the “Talisman”
At least none of them blew up, that’s the most positive thing I have to say
@@LuisSilva-pd2pd I've had two, second is on 179000 miles, full leather, inbuilt blinds, sat nav, memory seats, clutch lasted til 150000, never had a water pump issue, had it changed with cam belt little while back, no rattles, electrics work, 1 window mech replaced in its time, 1 EGR , same on all makes of diesel, bar that, the usual service bits , couple rear shocks etc, been very reliable, comfy and gets great mileage . The Mark 2 Laguna are incredible cars. My 2003 model 1.8 Dynamique have been reasonly reliable., although i'll admit the keycard system, the tire-pressure sensors and electric windows have been a weakness in my time as owner. Oil change every 5000 miles, regular servicing and dont drive it like one stole it, and it'll last a lifetime. I've drive mine on long-distance roadtrips and it's great. Comfortable, economical and handles well. A 6th gear would have been nice, cause at 80-90 miles per hour it's touching 3.000 RPM. I also have a Mark 3 Laguna (2008) with a 6-speed and it's brilliant! Mine Mark 2 is 15 years old, and still clocking in the miles. Currently over 212.000 miles. The mark 1 are good, but noticebly smaller and the Mark 3 are too similar to the Germans, but good highway-cruisers.
I have 2002 1.9dci 120 dynamique and for two years only my ECU went, everything else was more or less fine, good on fuel, fast enough, it was a single owner example with 174k km when i bought it...

@@123Jokkmokk123 I don't like seeing a check engine light everyday so I bought a Renault instead of a VAG pile of crap that sounds like a bag of spanners instead of a car, I drove a Mk4 golf 1.9 tdi 90hp for a few months, and i must say that the drive was that of a eastern european tractor...
I have friends who keeps telling me that VAG is the cure to fix all, but in reality they're a bucket of bolts. The Golf is a peculiar case being that they're worse then bad. They're boring.

I love so much this car
I drove an 04 1.9 dCi with 40k miles on the clock across France in 2008. Needed rear shock mounts fixing before the journey, £400! - well recognised weak point. Fully loaded with kids and gear. Economical, extremely comfortable and gave no problems. Got rid some while back for another motor. Not sure I'd want such a machine now though cos they've got a truly dreadful reputation re electrics. Honest John reports that some dealers stopped taking them in part-ex, they were that bad!
he talked a bullshit about Laguna II interior,why he didnt tryied the Laguna Privilege or Initiale Paris,it has the best interior in the class and above the class...

I still drive a laguna 2. 43k on the clock, 2.0 DCI 173bhp M9R engine. rear axle mount rubbers have been split for 7 years but once wheels are on the ground you cant tell, sails through every MOT. Best £720 i ever spent
Always thought these were very handsome, but terrified by the electronics that will undoubtedly be as reliable as a chocolate tea pot. If only Renault had let Nissan do the all of the electronic and mechanical side of things, kept the diesels simple like the Sofim 8140. French input on styling and comfort levels would be nice. No one has ever asked for silly card keys and when you lose your keys you cant just get a simple new one made.
Still a very nice car. In the first two years there were some issues, but later the Laguna II (and even more the III) turned out to be very reliable.
And hey, which brand doesn’t have a couple of bad years? VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat DSG and TSI anyone? Mercedes: corrosion and electronics? BMW 7-series (2001) that stops on the highway for no reason? Toyota’s airbags? Etc.

The gearbox went on mine...but mine was a Mark 1 Laguna Estate and it had a manual gearbox! The station wagon tailgate window kept opening at speed when I had the driver's window down!
yes im sure it did i know every car has things they are known for but the laguna 2 features in almost every unreliable car survey and the reviews ive seen and past owners i know back the surveys up
The Mk2 was quite ahead of its time in my opinion with that key for example😂
@Theguywholikesshitcars Yes, that card key came in handy on nights out when the bag of white got passed around….
An actual key was housed inside the card….most useful .
Oh the good old days
its a very nice car they picked, the red looks sporty and elegant, but like most Renault interior, they just look cheap, i got a toyota avensis and it looks in comparison very good with the executive equipment with wood, leather a and black cloth seats
i wish that Renault would also use some wood in their cars
i also have a 1.8 with a 5 speed manual in my avensis and seeing that the Laguna has also a 1.8 with 5 speed isn't a good choice especially for German highway, having a bigger and more potent engine is a must have for a good ride

Ah early 2000s sound mixing.
I own this car and I love it. I take care of it, clean it very often and it's such a good car... top speed 215km/h and it's very fast for the 1.9 dCi engine. No problems. 300.000 km and works as new. Check out my UA-cam channel, I uploaded a video of the car.

I had the laguna sport the previous version, it was and still is my favourite car, but then someone should of shot me, when I bought 2004 2 litre diesel, it was great looking I called it Vorderman, but what a horrible car it turned out to be, it was in the garage more times than on the road with electronic issues.
I suspect either all crashed or gone pop! As many competitors form this time are still out there!
It's sure losing its value fast. after 4-5 yaers it worth 30% of its original price.

+legioner9 Yes, the majority of people either lease or buy on finance, so sell their car at 2/3/4/5 years old
+legioner9 I think it's a cultural thing, I've found that in continental Europe people do tend to keep their cars for much longer periods of time, however in the UK, it's pretty typical for people to only keep a car 3 years, especially with the huge popularity of company cars and leasing. deals. It's a sad fact really, because it means cars lose their value very quickly and therefore have shorter lifespans, which is worse for the environment and leads to more congested roads.

The Laguna 1 was WAY Superior.
This is one car that you should avoid at all costs. The electronics inside these are incredibly unreliable. Go for the MK1 Laguna instead which is arguably better looking, just as comfortable and nowhere near as unreliable.
You will notice that used MK2 Lagunas cost the same, if not LESS than the MK1 Laguna.
Dave Johnson Had one in our family for 14 years, never a single problem with electronics (or anything else for that matter, just regular servicing). Never had to change a single lightbulb in it apart from the ones in the headlights which have a limited life anyway. It's a car I will always miss, frankly, sitting in any new car in this segment now feels a bit ordinary and boring, and a big step down in terms of comfort, refinement and just the feeling of ease when driving it. Everything in the Laguna is so smooth and refined, the way the clutch feels, the way the brake and throttle pedals feel, the way the gear stick just falls into gear with no effort, etc. It's not a sporty car to drive, but it swallows the road in such a way that you can travel in it for hours and hours and not feel tired at all.

Mk1 1999 version 19 years old and still going strong, and definitely better looking than mk2
