My grandmother had a basic peculator and the house would smell of fresh brew. Even though I did not drink coffee, I still connect that smell with a good hearty breakfast. I'm old enough to remember when she got her first Mr. Coffee machine. They were still rather new on the market, and it was so large.

I'm with you. I'm the only one that drinks coffee. So i make just a cup for me. Yet I have fond memories of being at my grand's house & that big reddish percolator. It had that little clear top. The house would smell great in the morning while she or mom were brewing their coffee. Also that can of A&P coffee setting along side of the percolator.

+1timby I myself do not drink percolator coffee but I too remember my parents' percolator that was all Pyrex glass with the exception of the aluminum filter basket. It smelled great but I never liked the taste, kind of overcooked and bitter. We always had a can of Butternut coffee on the shelf! :)

Find a Jet-O-Matic. It has all the advantages of a percolator but it doesn't boil the coffee; it never exceeds 202 degrees F. Not bitter or sour; just coffee flavor.

Perked coffee is the best. If you don't have a few extra minutes it takes to make the best cup of coffee there is, you don't know what good coffee tastes like. So sad for you!!

the one I have has really become my go to..but as this gentlemen mentioned when I have high end coffee, I like to use my 54 oz. french press..the Ham Beach I own has the blue light that comes on when the brew is complete then about 15 mins later it goes thru a recycling phase to mix it up some...that's when the 2nd cup of coffee is rich & robust...this thing goes with me on vacation!

I prefer a percolator so much more over any other way to make coffee I have ever, ever used. Oh, and I never get any cheap plastic models of any of them, either.

Got one of these about 6 yrs ago, and we Use it. But I think it is about to die. It works for a while then stops an the water is still cool. IF I leave it on for about 30 min it will get hot. When it was new it took just a few min to get hot. I noticed the light on the side, some times it works. Like I said we got this about 6 yrs ago so I can not complain to much. I do not think they make filters for these. So I buy the regular type filters an use them.

Do U have to cover all the holes on the inside of pot w water? I just want to make a single cup of coffee. But not sure if I need to fill pot w enough water to cover all holes or if I can just cover bottom 3 holes & still make a single cup of coffee.

I thought with a percolator like this you really want to use whole beans or coarse ground as typical ground coffee is too fine for this type of filter

What illy coffee is that? How is perked coffee compared to drip? I have a ninja at home, but i feel there should be something better.

    • @fastmoneyflow

Oh boy, i have a Ninja and absolutely HATE it. Even after 8 months and heavy cleaning, all you taste is plastic, because the whole thing is plastic. And i'm tired of microwaving my coffee every time because its never hot enough. I'm going back to my Percolator. I just bought this one and was reading the reviews. I'll be trashing my Ninja.

I got a Hamilton Beach perculator very similar to this one and I love it! As he said, perculated coffee has a richer and bolder taste than drip coffee. And my wife loves that the coffee is very hot. She always complained that our drip made coffee wasn't hot enough. But the main reason I switched to a perculator was because I was concerned about all the xenoestrogens from the hot water going through the plastic parts. I was concerned about the cholesterol from perked coffee, but I just poke the stem through a drip coffee paper filter and place it in the the stainless steel basket.

I would have liked to have seen the strength of the coffee after it was done. I like my coffee rather strong. Is it a matter of the amount of grinds used? With a stove top model, it was more of a matter of time percolated, which determined the strength.

    • @rxonmymind8362
      @rxonmymind8362 7 років тому

      Randy Warren
Less water more coffee grounds. It's also important how fine you grind the grounds. A fine ground will release more flavor but add a bit to the brewing time. A course or big grind will pass the water through a bit faster and give you less strength. But grind the coffee too fine on SOME coffee makers it'll create a "dam" inside the brewing basket and cause it to overflow as the drip is going to fast and the basket can't release the water fast enough through the bottom.
So it's a balance. With a percolator it doesn't give a damn what your grind is:) It just powers through and brews, brews, brews.
So experiment with grind size, water level and amount of grind.
      Cheers.

I use 2 full scoops per person per MUG full of water...stronger use more coffee...run the new percolator first use and dispose of the first brew then you're good to go...

I had around several different brands of electric percolators over 7 years: Hamilton Beach, Farberware (4 cup and 12 cup), 2 Cuisinarts and Capresso. They lasted between 2 and 8 months each. They're all the same --- stops working for no reason. One of them shut down the circuit breaker. They're all made in the land of China - different brand names stamped on them - and they're all useless. I'm now using a 5 cup (really a 2 cup) drip coffee maker from Amazon. Coffee comes out WARM - so I have to put the cup in the microwave for 25 seconds. Prior to buying all these defective coffeemakers, I had a few Farberware electric percs for 25 years.

I retired my plastic drip coffee maker for a new stainless steel Hamilton Beach percolator. Should have switched years ago. No toxic chemicals leaching out of all the plastic parts. I want only stainless steel touching my fresh ground Organic coffee!

Unfortunately, the bottom is aluminum which also has health implications. Only the stove top ones can be found in 100% stainless steel.

  • @klee9016

I've had three of these and they all short out eventually via the cord. You can tell just before it becomes a major fire hazard as the cord will become extremely hot. While I love percolated coffee I'm probably not going to replace the one that just shorted out, the third one, with a fourth one, because it just gets very tiresome having to buy replacement units. Hamilton Beach does offer a warranty but it's rather ridiculous as they charge half the price of a brand new unit to honor the warranty and require you to ship the defective unit back to them so the warranty replacement costs as much, if not more, then just going over to Target or Walmart and getting a new one.
The unit is extremely difficult to clean but boiling some borax in it every couple of weeks seems to do the trick.
I'm just staying away from this particular unit because I'd be buying my fourth one of exactly the same product and I know that it's going to short out just like the rest.
