    I have had this percolator for a few months now and love it. It makes the smoothest coffee I have ever brewed at home. Here are a couple of tips I have figured out:
    1. Always start with a clean coffee maker. I clean mine daily just using some very hot tap water to rinse off all the components and the inside of the pot, then towel dry everything. Don't submerge the pot in water, it will short circuit the internal electrical components.
    2. Use coarse ground coffee if available. The coffee I like only comes in medium grind, so I choose to use a regular 12-cup paper basket filter. I fold the filter in half and use a hand-held office hole punch to make a hole in the center of the filter to go over the stem of the basket. Works great, and leaves no sediments so long as your punched hole isn't bigger than the basket stem.
    3. The heater element is temperature activated. If you like stronger and more bitter coffee, start with COLD water (the lower the water temp, the longer the brew cycle to get the coffee to the proper shut-off temp). I like smoother and more mellow coffee, so I just fill the pot with water the night before so when I go to make coffee in the morning, the starting temp of the water is room temperature (shorter brew cycle to reach shut-off temp).
    4. I tend to make about three mugs (6 cups) and pour my first mug and drink it within 15 mins or so. When I go back to pour the second, I unplug the unit so the remaining mug in the pot doesn't scorch. By the time I go for my final cup, the remainder of the coffee is still pleasantly warm enough to enjoy. All said, after being left on warm for more than a half-hour, coffee scorches in almost any kind of pot.
    I hope these tips help! I know it seems like a meticulous process, but I do it for the silky smooth quality that only percolators can provide. It's worth the extra work, believe me!

    I have the same version of this Presto but much older, picked it up for a few dollars at a church thrift store. I've had it for almost five years now and it still works great. It's an excellent product.
    No filters needed. You can use regular grind drip coffee. I like to get Eight o Clock brand coffee from the store, and grind it as coarse as the machine at the store will go. Never a grind in the coffee, and it's delicious - much better than the canned coffee!
    I've moved on to stovetop percolators, which are a bit of a learning curve and take much longer to brew, but well worth it!

    I bought this percolator about 6 years ago and I just love it. It's the best coffee I have ever made and I have tried them all. No more nasty Keurig fake coffee for me. I do use a Bunn for quicker workweek coffee, but absolutely nothing compares to percolated coffee and I tell everyone about this brand. I remember having coffee from these kind of pots when I younger, before I was a "real" coffee drinker and I remember I always liking the taste more than your standard drip coffee maker. These kind, however, seem to have disappeared. Thanks to those who commented advising that filters are not necessary.

    It's funny that you're referring to automatic drip machines as "standard" coffee makers, when percolators were the standard coffee makers for about 100 years (up until the 1970s). "Fresh brewed" coffee used to be called "fresh perked". It is bizarre that the Mr. Coffee company was able to dupe everyone into ditching their percolators for bigger, bulkier machines which tend to brew weak, sour coffee, require filters, have plastic baskets and other plastic parts which contact the coffee, and have tubing which can't be accessed directly for cleaning.

    The tricky part about electric percolators is that there are some coffees that just don't make great percolated coffee. I find that coarse ground MEDIUM roast is the best to use with an electric percolator. You also need to make sure your percolator is VERY VERY CLEAN each and every time you make coffee. I also use a paper filter. The Melitta paper filters that are square and fold over the top of the coffee are best. COARSE grind is best since the water passes through the coffee many times. I've had excellect coffee using an electric percolator and also have had awful tasting coffee. It is extremely hot which is a plus...but the results differ from day to day. Consistency is hard to find but if you just find the best beans, medium roast, freshly coarse grind, filtered water, Melitta paper filters and about 2 level tblsp per 8 oz. water you're golden.

    • @thunderchikken2020
      @thunderchikken2020 2 роки тому

      I disagree.. I just bought the Hamilton Beach 12 Cup Electric Percolator and was having problems with making a good pot of coffee, but finally found the magic formula for me. Also I had problems with grounds getting into the coffee too, but found you can't even tell that if you use the right coffee, a minute amount of grounds in the final product isn't a big deal. For me, I make about 8 cups of coffee & use about 2 1/1 scoops of coffee using a 1/8th cup. Scoop if using Folgers and I use 6 scoops if making Don Francisco Hawaiian Kona blend. Also, I use no filters at all. With the DF coffee, you can see where the super fine sediment has settled when you're almost to the bottom of the cup. I even drink the fine sediment to no displeasure. But just how I've come to like it.

    A few notes. When talking coffee, a "cup" is 6 oz, not 8. If you put in 4 standard cups of water, that would come to 32 oz which is actually 5.3 coffee "cups." Also, the standard coffee measure per cup is one scoop which is 2 tablespoons. You put in 4 rounded tablespoons when you needed to put in 10 level tablespoons. You will get the very best coffee if you use the right amount of grounds. Nice video, though. And glad to see folks appreciating the old ways. Percolating is the best!

    • @MaximRecoil
      @MaximRecoil 8 років тому +1

      2 level tablespoons of coffee grinds per 6 oz. of water is for drip machines. You don't need that much for a percolator. 1 rounded tablespoon (which is about 1½ level tablespoons) of coffee grinds per 6 oz. of water makes fairly strong coffee in a percolator.

    No filters, never used filters with these ever since they have been in existence, there were no paper filters back then. And idea of having pure coffee, do not want being contaminated by the processed paper. just use a medium grind, want minimize sediment, use a courser grind. If self grind use a burr type mill, not the blades that pulverizes the beans. The best coffee made anywhere, they do not use paper filter crap! you are just filtering out the best part, the richness, the flavor anyway. use as was designed and will have no problem and the best coffee.

    There are two types of paper filters you can use; disc ones which are 2 for $5.50 on Amazon, and wrap arounds. Unless you live near a grocery store that still carries them, the wrap around filters are hard to get your hands on and they're more expensive. The disc ones slide over the pump stem and rest on the bottom of the basket, which has perforations for the coffee to drip through it cuts down on the sediment. Wrap around coffee filters have holes in each of the 4 corners, doesn't take any particular knack, I just don't think she was aware... Also when brewing on the stovetop, some some folks add a pinch of salt and some like me add a scoop of coffee for the pot.

    I have a perculator of another brand. I have a see-thru knob on top, which is not on the Presto, as I can see. But maybe it has some see-thru around the knob, I don't know. Anyway, I think see-thru is vital. Because, you want to know when the coffee is ready. Well, it will stop by itself and all that. But the coffee can be a little harsh, if that is the right word, from overheating and too long brewing time.
    So I found out that it was best to not let the ice cold water warm up with the coffee inside the pot, but wait a little while, and then put the unit with the coffe inside. Because of the stick inside, water will be poured over the coffee while heating up the water. And that can be a too long brewing time in total. So it is better to avoid that. After the water is close to hot, put in the coffe and brew a little while, some very few minutes, and most important, turn the brewer off before it shuts off automatic. Mine shuts of when boiling, and that is too hot for the coffe to be as tasty as possible. And the see-thru knob is vital too see when the coffee is enough brewed. Maybe Presto is better and shuts of before full boiling. The problem then is that you can't use the heating function. The coffee will get cold.
    With my "trick", the coffee will get better in taste. Especially when using dark roast, that easily can be to dark and too harsh. But it is more work. You have to watch the coffee maker during the whole process. The coffee will not be bad if you just dump cold water inside, assemble the brewer and walk away, absolutely not. So the little trick is only if you think your coffee should be better.
    I think a perculator is the best brewer available. And the most stylish as well. And yes, makes the best coffee. And it is really easy to use, and very fast as well (when you get used to it). Not at all more complicated than a regular coffee brewer. A perculator can brew without the paper filter as well. I didn't even know that you were supposed to have a filter inside until I saw it now on your video. No coffee beans will leak out without the filter either. So it can be done either way.

  • @bdavis7981
    @bdavis7981 7 років тому +3

    Despite the critics who slam percolators, probably only a few boil the water. They believe that it has to be boiling for the water to go up the tube. This is false. It only requires enough of a change in pressure. The ideal temp for flavor extraction is just under boiling about 190 to 205. Custom grind is very touchy for the best flavor and takes plenty of experimentation. I know that for Columbian, it's easy to over-extract the bean and you get a nasty flavor. When you zero in on it, it's the best in the world. Any medium or strong roast can be easily over-extracted. Too fine and French and Italian roast will taste like harsh mud in a percolator. Best to go whole bean and find the right grind. Fresher too.

    I think the corners of the filters have holes in them that slide back over the metal tube to hold it in place.

    IMO the whole reason of buying something like this is ease of of use. If you can't just put in some good regular grounds, you might as well grind beans and French press 'em. I have a stovetop percolator and have been using regular grounds the paper filters from my drip days just to get rid of them.
    The flavor is not inhibited and there are no grounds in the finished coffee.
    The best part is I just poke a hole in the paper filter with the stem, put it in the basket at turn on the stove.
    In my mind, the slow brewing on the smallest burner (set on medium) makes it taste better.

    I find it odd they included paper filters. This method of making coffee appeals to me because it can be done without disposable elements i.e. the filters. Plus I like it better when the oils are not separated from the finished drink. Coffee that is filtered looks way too sterile in my opinion.

      @ Israel Santos,
      I wet the basket when it is empty before I put the coffee grounds in it. I then add the coffee grounds on the wet basket and make coffee. Nothing to it! Try it and look in the bottom of the pot when you're pouring your last cup. There will be surprisingly few grounds in it. I have used paper filters but they filter out the oils and I kinda like them so I do the wet basket trick. Hope it works for you. Enjoy!!

    If you get yourself some coarse ground coffee then you really don't need the filter. But it doesn't hurt to keep the filters on hand just in case you have to buy the regular coffee.

    I have learned that coffee pots that do not perk do not taste as good and do not last as long. I have been making cowboy coffee and because it boils you get a smooth tasting cup because it boils away the acid and no burping. I am buying a percolator.

I am new to the precolator, in the drip style pot i used one 1 tablespoon of fresh ground coffee of a med roast, i was told to use 2 tablespoons in a precolator because of recirlating of water , but the flavor of bitter , of flat tasting, some acidy , should i use 1 tablespoon , what is the measuremetns you use for a full body flavor and no bitterness

I like my coffee a bit stronger so I might use more grounds that you would. In my 8 cup perc I use about 3 heaping tablespoons of grounds.

      @themustar601 8 років тому

      Yep, this does have aluminum (we were told it was in the bottom where the tube sits, the removable parts are supposedly stainless steel). I was looking into getting one of these because I have parakeets. Anything with a non-stick Teflon component releases fumes that can kill pet birds quickly. Bird owners are always on the lookout for PTFE/PFOA free toaster ovens, cookware, coffee pots, popcorn poppers, curling wands, irons, etc. etc. A lot of people were interested in this percolator until some calls to the manufacturer verified that the bottom well contains aluminum, which is not good for people. Still looking...

    The heating element at the bottom is NOT stainless steel and does come in contact with the water, it is aluminum! This person blatantly made a false statement. With that said, all coffee pots have aluminum heating elements (exception is french press and pour over)
