- 2021_01_04 Murchison through the Maruia Saddle to Hanmer Springs via the Lewis Pass then over the inland route to Kaikoura was on my bucket list. And what a perfectly glorious day to ride the stunning beech forest at Maruia Saddle. The vista’s and beech forests on the ride to and through the Lewis Pass were breath-taking. One of my favourite roads in New Zealand is the 83km Inland route from Waiau not far from Hanmer Springs to Kaikoura, and believe me that 83 km goes so fast. I know I say this often, but this route is a must see on a fine day and all of it can be done easily in a car. It brings with it a true feeling of adventure.
My next video continues up the Kaikoura Coastline to Dashwood then travels south to Hanmer Springs through Molesworth Station on the Awatere Valley Road. I can’t wait to finish editing that one.
Finally I wish one and all a wonderful 2022 and thank you for being with me on my journey's. To share is to double the enjoyment.
Kaikoura.....😉
A belated thanks for watching my channel VW. For some reason its only just come through.... so better late than never.
Nice.
Oops, just noticed your comment. Thanks Mothership👍
fun ride, good job.
Thanks Dave appreciate your support
Some great roads, rivers and bridges around that way !
Definitely worth making the effort, and the beauty is its basically a main route. 👍
Once again. a cracking good video. Bless, Goose.
Thanks Stephen. Yep, a lot of good stuff all in a small area with lots of options. That Maruia
Beech forest was really special I thought.
LOL - "I never speed..." next shot doing 108kph... lol - still bloomin sensible ;)
Hi Campbel my opoligy, your comment has only today come to my notice. I appreciate your support and.... I never speed lol.
Awesome m8,what a great loop,an will pen that camp ground in for my next trip, looking forward to the next episode, safe travels 👍
Thanks moto-mart for you support. Yep that Beech forest was a stunner and the road to the doc camp is worth while. Good luck
I've Kayaked some of the Matakitaki - Mid and lower, and also paddled a ton of rivers around Murchison. Pretty sure the Glenroy is up that rd somewhere too. Currently, I have an Africa Twin as well (2016). Few of my vids up on UA-cam :) My mate Glenn put me on to you. Great to check out your channel :)
Owe you an apology Campbell. I didn't realise I hadn't answered you. I watched you and you come across well and you're not afraid to say it as it is. Good stuff
@@kiwiadventurer Thanks heaps - just need to get more content out and sort out my bloomin action-cam footage. Drowned both my Akaso cameras on my last ride - BMW ADV ride around Rotorua. Ended up with only afternoon footage from my Campark in its waterproof case.
@@campbellrousselle9752 Bad luck Campbell. Hope you get sorted soon. Matter of fact I've got you up on my task bar ready to watch after I finish my work, Cheers
Well done Daryl . Enjoyed your gallop in the hills.
Thanks Alvin, pleased you got some thing out of it. Stirs up the old juices.
Cheers Alvin appreciated. 👍
Cheers Alvin appreciated. 👍
Love the video, I’m a newbie to this off road business after 34 years on Harleys. Would a vstrom 1000 do that road happily enough do you think and what tyres are you running?
Hi Calum appreciate your support. I sold my Switchback 103 Harley 3 months ago after owning it for 4 or 5 years and definitely miss that style of riding. I've had the Africa Twin a good 3 yrs and my favourite tyre combo is a Mitas EO7 + (plus) which is a dual sport adventure 150/70/18 and is rated 50/50 on road off road. I get 7 - 8,000kms from them. The front is a Continental TCK80 which is a little more aggressive and rated as a 40/60 on road off road dual adventure tyre. I get up to 15,000km with that tyre. They are both very capable on the road and are predictable with good feel. I’m a hard breaker and am amazed how hard I can push the front. I have no trouble in the wet and of course ride to the conditions. Last March I tried a more aggressive rear Anikee Wild which was more capable off road but way too noisy for me on road and don't last as long as the Mitas. You will have no trouble with the Vstrom, lets face it, it's not a lot different than my bike. Cheers and be safe.
What ya shooting on, GOPRO10??
No, got two Gopro black 7's, the first with full stability control. I've answered with more detail in one of your videos why. I'm waiting to suss out gopro's 11 if they release it in November. By the way I'll be uploading a vid very soon about the awesome riding in Taranaki backcountry discovering their 10 + stock and road tunnels starting with The Moki tunnel on SH43 on the lost highway..... Cheers
@@kiwiadventurer Wow, they take great footage - impressive, especially if you are only shooting 1080 :) I've subbed, so should get your next vid :)
Hi Daryl. One of my favorite rides. Great footage. The Rainbow is open over the period 11 Jan - 7 Feb. Are you still in the main land? Ops just seen you rode it last year.
No I came back to Npr end of Jan 2021 and only shot the Eastern Gravel Rash Riders vid since. I 've done short sketches with my Ulysses club rides and the rest of the time editing. Would have finished them all months ago but had bad software probs around Mch. I shot shit loads of rides before going to the Sth Island but I'll get around to them eventually. I'm going back down Mch this year with Mike Shaw and we're going to push a few comfort zones. Hope to catch up with you some time. Cheers Mike
@@kiwiadventurer Hi Daryl. Are you coming down to Christchurch in March for the Ulysses Club National Rally and AGM? I think Mikes not attending the rally now.
@@mikedew380 Hi Mike. In our planned coverage of the Sth Island we originally allowed a couple of days for it. The whole trip with this government how they handle covid is a lottery so in the end we thought about it and decided to give it a miss
@@mikedew380 Hi Mike. Mike Shaw and I had include spend two days with it originally on our March South Island tour but the way things are up the air all the time with this government we no will give it a miss in our new itinerary.
Hey Daryl. I’m keen to ride Molesworth, Rainbow, over Takaka Hill and around into the Abel Tasman, Motueka River Valley Rd then this ride you’re showing here. I love the dirt roads but want ro camp in nature- not amongst the masses in towns. Not sure what the rules are- been out of NZ 30+ years and it’s changed. DOC campsites are the lowest common denominator are they? Any advice welcome. Ride from Taupo.
Hi Steve this is a quicky as I've got rush out for dinner. Doc camps are great and have different levels of facilities. Go to your nearest doc centre or tourist info and get the doc south island camps booklet. Its real cool and good instructions with maps. They are marked in areas. If you pass through Napier let me know and I'll give you my phone number and show you some great map idea. Cheers
Mate I’m just over the hill(s). May actually shoot over this morning for a feed of fush & chups and a couple of pints.

Thanks for the meet-up Daryl and remember to drop by whenever you roll through Taupō mate! I’m really impressed with your vids and your pretty hardcore off-road riding. I’m catching up on all the vids you’ve up already and look forward to those to come. On the music topic- I’m partial to a bit of rock music, can’t say if it’s everyone’s favourite but yeah I like it on certain rides. You know your demographic I guess. Maybe try it out and ask on the vida for input? Look forward to seeing you again soon.
@@steve.afendoulis I'll keep you to that Steve, was an interesting day for sure.
what maps /maps book do you use to find all these roads?
Hi Mark. You could google NZ Adventure riding destinations / sources etc / Adventure Riders New Zealand if registar no cost there is access to an excellent selection. / Dpt of Conservation maps discover the outdoors./ Hut Bagger Nz / NZ Topographic maps / and this guy does it for a living. Check out Josh Martin's Remote Moto. / If you google Motorcycle touring NZ there are some very good books. Thanks for watching.
@@kiwiadventurer Thanks … will definitely be doing a few of these roads next March
