    Hi mate good to see you have the crf up and running again, yes I have had problems with dealers trying every trick in the book to get out of fixing something that they know is a fair warranty claim, anyway onward and upwards, cheers ride safe.

    No sign of being lean Darryl, as far as I can see the piston ring lands let go .that's only my opinion though , I did work for the honda importer in NZ and did my apprenticeship with them , honda has their rules and won't budge , tough company to deal with in my experience, glad to see that the bike is running again! Great video, an eye opener for us riders fitting aftermarket parts! Cheers.

      That was the point I wanted to bring home Peter. A lot of people don't realise that. I fitted a lot of extra's onto my CRF AT including an Acrapovic full exhaust system before the bike left the show room. No worries and all listed with Blue Wing. And... yea, some one agrees with my opinion. There's no doubt that piston got awefully hot but not from the top. Did you look at the damage. Its bending up which means the piston as on the down stroke. Mmmmm.... Cheers

    Hi Darryl thanks for providing an update on your engine issues I feel your frustration . Honestly, I’m not surprised that blue wing Honda wouldn’t play ball.. a few years back my wife’s CB 650 F shit itself with only 20,000 k’s on the clock after returning from a South Island trip, rode home parked it in the garage , went to start it the next morning and no go. Engine strip down showed 3 bent exhaust valves, 4 bent intake valves and as expected damage to the top end . Blue-wing Honda didn’t want to know initially but We eventually got paid out the value of the bike by our insurance ( long story)
    I’m currently riding a DR 650 that I purchased new 2 years ago that I’ve since fitted with after market exhaust, alerted air box and bigger main jet as a lot of DR owners do. I’ve had it tuned by BRM in paeroa to suit the mods . I change oil and filter every 3000 k Fingers crossed it doesn’t shit itself ,as I doubt Suzuki NZ Would want anything to do with it
    Good luck with with your future rides, stay safe and keep sharing your adventures
    Cheers

      That's quite a story Kevin. I image your wife wouldn't be as naturally agressive as the average guy (could be wrong) as women arn't as hard on a bike. I feel your short story would be most interesting long. Yes the DR 650 is popular and easy to look after and tune. I used to regularly do a plug chop on my exc 250 and it was quick and easy to play it safe. Cheers

      That's a fantastic idea Albert, I've mentioned that I would like to do that in a couple of my videos. I know for sure electric grips don't work on there own. I think electric gloves are the go, or electric grips with wrap around hand protectors. Same thing being in Otago when all the poplars turn yellow (breathtaking) I'm heading down south 11th Feb for a good thrash. That will keep me busy this winter editing them.

    Great video Darryl, I suppose the silver lining is the parts are only 100s and not 1000s :P that makes me more than happy to run the risk of doing the ECU and pipe on mine and simply watch for oil consumption for a while. If I do the same thing and it 'doesn't' blow up... like hundreds of others have with their CRF300s... then that will just fuel the theory that the bike malfunction was due to a Honda issue and not a user/modification issue :)

    • @kiwiadventurer

      Your comments reflect my thoughts on the matter Sabastian. I think the bike stock standard is too over geared and riders particularly newbies automatically ride in top gear (over drive). I feel Honda should have been more practicle because from 5th to 6th is a considerable gap. I now have the bike set up so that at 100kph I'm doing exactly 7000rpm and I have the over rev light set at 8000rpm. The bike isn't going to hand grenade at 10500rpm, according to Alexandra Honda. I run a 43 tooth sprocket and the combo gives me cruising speeds from 100 to 120 without concern. I get up to 120kph but generally wouldn't cruise ove 110kph. It's a whole new dynamic to the asthetics of adventure riding ticking along at 100kph without a care in the world with time to see the world around me and knowing my bike can navigate most situations. Having said that, for single trails with a bike carrying self contained holiday luggage would be pushing the boudaries. The bike so far on the new engine sitting a 7000rpm all day long including hard excelleration has not use a skerrick of oil in the last 4000kms.

    I'd be putting it on a dyno so AFR can be checked properly or you may have the same thing happen again if it is related to detonation and as the flashed ECU is not specific to your exhaust and airfilter but a one size fits all, the fact you ran the bike after noticing the low oil and then it died may mean you wont ever know what happened to cause it, if you'd been able to strip it at that point you might have got a better indication of what was going wrong, I'm not really surprised there was no warranty as you've modified the bike away from standard

    • @kiwiadventurer
      @kiwiadventurer  Рік тому +2

      Hi K. I don't think detonation was the cause Unfortunately I can't relate what the link that didn't work said. Talking warranties I knew that and it was about what Davidson said that cumulatively created the perfect storm. Like wind resistance of the luggage system and that I was running at 6000rpm (95kph) with a tyre that was 10mm in diameter bigger. We're talking about 6% overdrive for heavens sake on a bike designed to carry a pillion. If what he said was true there would by thousands of crf 300 shitting themselves. Take a look at the bit of piston that is missing. If there was detonation how come the missing bit is sloping up, It didn't happen with the piston on an upstroke. The whole issue is there was no acknowledgement that the oil it used so suddely. Thats mechanical. The piston crown doesn't reflect a lean environment but by heck, that piston got hot. Why. I only wish people were able to read what Maverick from 550Performance had to say. He has sold over 2000 reflashed Oem ECU's without major combacks to 300CRF,s. I'm very dissapointed the link didn't work because it put balance to both side of the story. Five of the globes top bike builders for the CRF300 have rated reflashing as their top 5 modifications. I asked Davidson outright , incase the oil loss had other consequences, could he take that into account before assembling the motor and they wouldn't acknowledge it. Cheers.

      Gedday Bill. Where the piston crown is broke isn't detonation. The heat has come from the bore not from the combustion chamber (my opinion and 550Performance opinion).If you view closely the piston bit missing from the crown. That damage has been pushed up to the crown while the piston was on the down stroke. It is a mechanical problem which Maverick spoke about, thats why its a crying shame you can't access the link. Cheers for watching.

    I know the feeling. I was young plumbing apprentice and finally managed to scrape up the money for a brand new Honda CBX550. What a piece of rubbish, cam chain tensioner gone in months replaced by warranty, but not the stretched cam chain, starter motor went ,and in 1 week after warranty the exhaust rusted out. Dash cracked up and cause of the c_rap model they had no resale value. Bought Kawasaki, cause I lost confidence in Honda and stuck with Kawasaki for a long time, bought about 5 new bikes off them.The only problem I ever had was when the Z750 starter housing cracked 3 years after buying new, Kawasaki came to the party with a deal. Came to the conclusion S_hite happens, weird thing is I,m back on a Honda CB300r for now and will probably upgrade to a Honda CB500x. I like the local the dealer.

      Hi Samdog, sounds like you've done your apprenticship of hard knocks. I don't have bike loyalties but was right into Kawasaki which served me well when I was young. I buy after research and what is best for me at the time. There's no doubt the CRF 300 is super reliable, I was simply unlucky. I did 4,000 in the South Island and including the Dusty Butt event February this year and was set to stay another 3 weeks when I damaged my Roto Cuff on my right shoulder, end of trip. My Africa Twin has just had its 80,000 km check over and the valve clearances haven't moved since the day I bought it new. When you like your dealer something good is happening and trust is built. Trust and loyalty deserves discount but has to be earned. A good dealer will always reward loyalty. Thanks for supporting my channel, theres plenty more uploads coming this winter when I update my pc. Take care.

      Thanks for your support Marty. It didn't concern me about voiding the warranty because I broke Honda's strict warranty policy. What concerned me was the energy used to drum in all what he said how I created the perfect storm, that caused the problem. I was gutted that my viewers were unable to access my link to all the facts, especially Maverick of 550Performance. It was an eye opener. Then when I approached Blue Wing it was like joining the closed ole boys club. Davidson had allready made his mind up before he contacted BW to see if my parameters for a warranty claim hadn't broken the rules. As you stated, a lack of business acumin.

    The first thing I would have done was read my warranty agreement as I am pretty sure modifications of any kind are a no no if you don't want to void it and that goes for all brands of bikes and cars. With all the bikes I have bought I have made sure they satisfy fully the power I need in stock form. I remember seeing on FB a guy brought a Royal Enfield bike and fitted a better quality brake and he got comments saying that modification would have to be certified as well as well as being checked to see it did not void the warranty on the bike even though it was a better than stock brake.

    • @kiwiadventurer

      Yes Peter I completely agree with you. That was one of the reasons for my video, not everyone knows that. I made a point early in the video that I excepted that. My dealer in Hawke's Bay would not have hesitated to repair it. We're not talking big bucks. I still have my CRF AT. I fitted 5 g of extra's including an Acropovic full system. It was all done before the bike left the showroom.

  • @peterjones7935
    @peterjones7935 Рік тому

    I've never had much faith in warranties, from way back in 72 when my Kawasaki F9 (Bighorn) shredded its rotary valve and trashed the piston. Laurie Summers weasled out of that by claiming there was sand in the engine, my fault because I had not greased the air filter case (not specified in the owners manual but something "everybody knows") Jump forward 36 years and the next new bike I bought (KLR650) was using excessive amounts - like 1 litre per 500 - 800 kms - engine oil. Rings and valve guide seals WERE replaced under warranty but made little to no difference. Any further warranty work was declined so did my own research and replaced the standard piston with a Schnitz 685 kit at my expense that completely resolved the problem. However something I have got into the habit of doing - check the oil level EVERY fuel stop. The all roller bearing bottom end of the KLR is like a two stroke and can live on an oil mist, but the cams are plain bearing and low oil kills the cylinder head very quickly.

    • @kiwiadventurer
      @kiwiadventurer  Рік тому

      That's sound advice for us single cylinder riders Peter. Your experience above was worthy of of a small claims court. Just because a washing machinge craps itself a day after the warrant date doesn't mean the seller is free to tell you where to go. That's why we are protected by the Consumers Guarantees Act. Trouble is a lot of us with our ignorance just accept the snotty decisions others make. We don't purchase a vehicle or motorcycle or a washing machine if we know its only going to last 12 mths or what ever term the warranty is. The consusmers Guarantee Act applies to big assed motor manufacturers as well. Sounds like you knew what you were doing with the Schnitz kit. A man's got to have a little bit of luch now and then lol..

    its not the dealer it will be blue wing that denied the warranty claim. What is your reasoning for the loss(presumably burning(large puff od smoke when started that morning)) of oil??

    • @kiwiadventurer
      @kiwiadventurer  Рік тому

      Hey Paul. It can be both or one or the other. Meaning my dealer would not have hesitated because Blue Wing don't know what they don't know. It happened so suddenly. I was checking the oil reasonably regularly. I googled about white smoke and its associated with water. Condensation in the exhaust or a head gasket. That's a tricky one. I don't think the head gasket showed any signs of leakage so I can't answer your question. Thanks for watching.

  • @fawcetttrips2466
    @fawcetttrips2466 Рік тому +1

    Well, you modified it significantly. Do you seriously expect Honda to accept a tune from some guy called Maverick? The black piston does not discount lean running because the oil had to burn out after the damage started. Main lesson, is that if you think you or anyone else knows more than the Japanese Honda designers, think again. If the bike does not do what you want it to do, get a bike that does.

    • @kiwiadventurer
      @kiwiadventurer  11 місяців тому

      I seriously doubt that you watched the video in its its entirety or if you did you didn't absorb it. By your valued apinion ...and yes it is valued, I feel you have missed the points I was trying to make. I was always aware what voids a warranty and made that point very clear while riding across the viaduct on the first river. And for sure I couldn't agree with you more that nobody knows more how to build a bike than Honda. One of the main points I made is how challenging it is for motorcycle manufacturers to meet the polution laws particularly in the USA where legislation is brutal. The accessorie business, the one that rips us off the most thrives because it allows us to get the bike running or handling the way the manufacturer would have liked in the first place. You've opened a can of worms and there isn't space enough to start now. Do you really think I should run a paper air filter system in what is a pretty wet environment these bikes were built for. A budget and overwieght exhuast system that runs hot and is big, that's up to us if we want better. Honda could but its aimed at a given market that mostly wouldn't give a hoot. Finally Maverick has learnt his skills from the best brains in the states and has sold more than 2000 reflashed OEM ecu's to riders of the crf series. They are running so lean at times the snatchyness of the throttle is so easily refined by richening up that area. Further Mavorick richens the CRF 300 ecu's 15% across the board before starting just to allow for the difference between the same engines. They are lean but does an unsuspecting joe average know all this, I don't think so and its been an education for me.

    • @fawcetttrips2466
      @fawcetttrips2466 11 місяців тому

      @@kiwiadventurer I watched the entire video. The standard filter works fine in any environment, if it did not, there would be options available in different countries, there is not. I ride a standard bike except for a lowered seat, if it did not do the job I wanted because the exhaust was too heavy, I would change it. But that has never happened. The bike takes me everywhere I want to go as it is. If people are tinkerers, or it is their hobby to modify bikes, they can fill their boots. But my point here is that there is no practical reason for any of the mods you did. E I don't care what you do to your bike, but when it blows up, don't blame other people, you did it, when you did not have to. It's like getting a tattoo, getting an infection and blaming the ink manufacturer. EDIT: And there is a reason that California (not the US) has very strict emissions requirements. It's questionable about people like us who burn Dino juice, contribute to climate change for our enjoyment. But doing that after blowing away the emissions levels designed into the bike should not be done.

      @kiwiadventurer  Рік тому

      I'll always defend your right to your opinion Dan. Lets sort the air filter fact first. Because the bike wouldn't start I needed access to the battery cover. To do so all the rackless luggage had to come off. Because I had already done nearly 4000km and the seat was off, I took the opportunity to change the pre filter which is a unifilter oiled foam sock that runs back from the air inlet trumpet on the outside of the filter housing under the seat. Inside the air box was a ripple oiled foam unit. Now back to the river crossing. I was not concerned about water in the intake because I didn't think the water was high enough. And had water got into the system via the air filter I would have known immediately. Because the bike was running sweetly the whole time I had no reason to consider what you said. However had water got through the air filter I would definately have known by the performance. Finally if enought water had got in to damage the oil quality I would have seen the colour contamination not to mention performance. I hadn no reason to make a connect between the two. As far as the sight glass goes. With oil at the bottom of the sight glass being at a guess 10mm, why would I worry what that would represent in terms of oil capacity. No one would have thought I would lose almost a whole lite of oil in 160km so suddenly. I didn't rubbish Davidson, I merely disagreed with the bs reasons he spoke of and the fact no acknowledgment was given about an oil loss. Sorry to see you biting your nose to spite your face. Watch it again and you might absorb what you missed.
      Thanks for watching.
