Just worth emphasizing, the entire manga is available digitally on Viz's website and Comixology for legal purchase, all 28 volumes. Volume 1 has been available digitally from Viz since at least 2013. Support it in that way if you can.
Wow, Saint Seiya! Thanks for talking about this series, it is one of my favorites and I am so glad that Netflix has the original series including the Asgard and Posiden arcs! I do hope that Netflix gets the Hades arcs as well. As for the manga, I have the English language versions of the manga on my kindle. The reason I did not collect the physical copies of the English language manga itself is that I have the original Japanese versions of Saint Seiya, that I collected during the original airing of the show. I enjoyed your video and thanks for talking about one of my very favorite shows!!
I'm so glad you're into Saint Seiya! I'm was a kid in Brazil back in the 90s and this anime was a CRAZE. literally all the kids watched the show, it was such a big hit all over the country. All kids would stop what they were doing to go to the front of tv and watch it at 6:30pm - and yes it was uncensored version with blood, violence, etc. To me it had a special meaning because this series got me into Greek Mythology. I was fascinated by the way the cloths were designed according to the constellations. The whole thing about gods, and heroes, and the connection with other mythologies such as Norrdic on the Asghard saga (one of the best sagas), etc. This was very successful in Latin America and Europe as well but it's a pity it didn't make in America. You should definitely watch the classic anime- and get away from the horrible cheesy pathetic Netflix version. 😉👍
Hello, I am from Brazil !!! Saint Seiya is the most famous series here, and I don't understand US manga market because there are too many mangas famous around the world except in America, as Captain Tsubasa and Saint Seiya ... Great channel がんばって!!
People say bleach's soul society arc is one of the best and when I looked up what was it about I realised the skeleton of the arc is basically the sanctuary saga from the manga/anime. Quick little fact if anyone is interested
There was an interview to Kubo where he talked about the mangas that influenced him, he mentioned that the series he liked the most when he was younger were "Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro" and "Saint Seiya", so it's no wonder that he used things like mythology, yokai, or the general structure of Saint Seiya, while writing Bleach. Look at things like the Gotei 13 Captains being basically the same thing as the Gold Saints. Edit: I forgot about this, but even certain characters had similar abilities or things like that.
@@GBELCHIOR616 its not atleast not at the time its also way to similler to eachother for it to just be a ganeric story arc in anime and its been directly stated that bleach is influenced by saint seiya
Yeah. I remember reading about how the author of Bleach got inspiration from Saint Seiya. And as I was reading the Sanctuary Arc, I could see the similarities between Ichigo and his friends' fights in The Soul Society and Seiya and the Bronze Saints' battles at Sanctuary.
I see that after Netflix showing Saint Seiya’s Anime dubbed in English but not censored and with its original soundtrack of course, may grow to be a big and respected series that may even transcend into an audience that aren’t necessarily into Anime/Manga.
Nice to see an English-language review of this in America underrated series. I am a first generation Saint Seiya fan. I grew up with it and was actually lucky enough to watch the original series in its uncensored version, in French in the second half of the 1980s. Its epicness truely defines the story, it's about the strength and the endurance to climb incredible mountains, it's about friendship, about determination and about opposites, which intrigued me from the beginning as a kid. It's very melodramatric and melancholic, it has a very violent side but also a very soft side, and it's all drenched in this mystical and mysterious aura. How do show that in a heavily censored version with blue bood and other horrible mutilations that are more gruesome than what they try to censor? I understand the reaction in the States and why it's not so popular over there, you simply didn't get the proper version that's needed to fully understand the story. I also loved and love the animation of the original series and the OVA's. I would actually recommend fans who don't know the story yet to go via streaming. And watch the anime there. The anime also has the Asgard arc as a bonus, which isn't in the manga but doesn't have the nature of being a filler, it's like Kuruma wrote the arc herself. You can also go for the digital manga, but you can't read all chapters digitally, I have the impression (at least not a while back), and the animated battles give that extra something that makes the story special. If the original anime catches on via Netflix in the English-speaking countries, then there might be a high chance the manga will be reprinted. On the one hand it is nice for the fans who want a copy, on the other hand it might be nice for you to have something that is rare. Yes, I secretly and openly envy you for that collection.
I was getting saint seiya as it was coming out too except for the last 10 I think. My mom had to order them through barnes and nobles and got them for me for christmas. Also got saintia sho too just need 8 more. Hoping they do they rest of the spin off one in english one day.

I know the video is from April 2020 but Saint Seiya's original anime has a new, amazing english dub from Netflix but I dunno if it's still in the platform. Bad thing is, just the OG anime is dubbed, from beginning of the series to Poseidon's arc ending; no Hades' arc, no 5 OG animated movies.
I LOVE Saint Seiya, grew up with it in Mexico. It was a great anime and I finally got the Manga from Panini Comics that publishes it in Mexico! Great video, glad to know there are fans in the US as well!
Good news: Saint Seiya Final Edition is already available in many countries, with small changes in the story and drawings, and extra chapters. So probably the 3D reboot in Cruchyroll can spark interest on publishers.

Hi! I'm from Belgium in Europe. I can tell you that if you go to France, Italy, Spain,... all over Europe, Saint Seiya is huge and beloved. Maybe even more than Dragon Ball Z. So, it's not only Central and South America, but also Europe. And I call tell you that Saint Seiya is very famous in China. Saint Seiya is maybe one of the most popular Shonen around the world. Saint Seiya still have an influence on so many manga and video games, like Dragon Ball (Saint Seiya is one of the Akira Toriyama's favorite manga), Bleach, Naruto, Seven deadly sins, The Legend of Zelda,... Great video, unfortunately you don't talk about the emotion, and how Kurumada use many mythology (greek of course but not only). But it's nice to see someone talking about it in the US and I hope that, one day, this shonen will get the success it deserved in the US. By the way, the anime from 1986 is very good. You have great episodes and movies directed by Shigeyasu Yamauchi. The music from Seiji Yokoyama is maybe one of the best anime's music ever. And the art style from Shingo Araki and Michi Himeno are beautiful.
I've always hard of saint seiya here and there and someone i knew once love it & i regret not getting in to it sooner. So last year is when i got in to SS so I've watched most of the spinoff animes expect the classic (witch is not on UK Netflix) so..still stuck there 😑 but I've been buying what i can of the manga saintai sho, BT'X and the classic. I went to Amazon to buy a few and noticed only a few were available and not all the volumes. Very disappointed. Did you get a chance to see the live action movie?
I watched the series quite a long time ago but it being on Netflix reignited my love for Saint Seiya. I really wish I would have picked it up while it was still in print.. As you said, $500 on ebay for a whole set right now. Great video! On the shonen manga side, it would be cool to see a video on Shaman King (Also looks to be pretty OOP nowadays).
Well, it's 2022 and apparently the Netflix series didn't cause a reprint of Saint Seiya to happen. I'm still hopeful though, because Viz has been reprinting some old stuff like URUSEI YATSURA, THE DRIFTING CLASSROOM, and FIST OF THE NORTH STAR... all stuff that didn't necessarily sell spectacularly in North America on its first time around, but nevertheless has over the years maintained a strong cult following, and therefore is worthy of a second exposure. Another one I'm hoping will get a second chance is BIO-BOOSTER ARMOR GUYVER.
Yes!! So worth it if you can find it at a good price. I have been reading it in Spanish as is WAY MORE AVAILABLE and the follow up story of Next Dimension in full color is spectacular!! Everything we need it for the story to continue with beautiful artwork. If you can, try to read it in Spanish as you will have access to the spin off too (Lost Canvas, Episode G and Next Dimension).
The US version of the anime is heavily censored. There's barely any violence and queer subtext. There's a video from Get in the Robot where Cristal explains why it has the popularity it has in Latino America, heavily encourage that u check that video out.
I vaguely remember the series, but thanks for the video and for the thoughts. I loved the components of the discussion that also reflected about the anime and its adaptations too. I will definitely try to read the series eventually and hope it does have the opportunity to get traction and reprints. I think it was a great segment. Do Flames of Recca next! This was actually an extremely good anime with a great pilot and story line. The action, intense drama, deep story telling, science and Greek mythology truly made this a special anime so many American audiences missed out on.

I personally enjoyed Lost Canvas & Omega as spinoff series of Saint Seiya! I haven't checked out Saintia Sho just yet but definitely interested in it as well! Cheers!
Netflix did provide the series a new and complete English dub for all 114 episodes. Some volumes of the manga were just starting to get expensive when I was buying the manga back in 2009 or so, so I imagine it only got more expensive. Thankfully Viz did make it available digitally for a reasonable price.
got a real good deal on ebay for the whole set. cant wait for it. this coming after tracking all volumes of slam dunk you have some good recommendations.
If anyone has Saint Seiya vol 10 and is willing to sell please contact me, or if anyone finds one online please comment and let me know, it's the only one I can't find.
You can easily see how the poor dub and censorship of the anime in the us affected the popularity of Saint Seiya. Most videos you find of it are either not in english or just have barely any english comments.
This is why subbed anime is supreme. No censorship , fully uncut and more dramatic voiceover (the actors act the scenes together in a room unlike English dubs )
i watched the old anime and man it was the most repetitive show ive ever seen lol. but i loved the designs reminded me a lot of ronin warriors which i loved growing up
I realy like the dub (yes i do). Plus dragon ball ternoments go proper enlist thecoriginal plus saint seiya and few ather series did wen it came out and hes dragon ball simbole but ist a goodie (thouw friza wenet to his birth form) you have to see it in a rifrent way that you are louking for ,jojo jonethen and jowsef got stronger.
If you know anything besides English, by the love of Athena buy the manga (majority of European languages) have a realize and in stock of the manga and even in a better edition than what viz offered. Please don't give scalpers money.
Yes, America botched the adaptation, but overall I think the manga is shit compared to anime (sub). The anime has better art style and much better pacing. Just look at the hades arc in the anime. The anime original scenes for the first part of hades arc really packed an emotional punch. Scenes like dohko and shion's final moment, which wasn't in the manga.
Your review is imcomplete. You didn't speak about this story. All you did was compare saint seiya to dragon ball and other mangas. You didn't talk about the emotion of this story or it's characters or their evolution. And at last when you talkl about if this is worth it, you again talk about price and not about the story. Is like you read it but you never felt a thing. So this review is unnecessary to see, if a publisher hears you talking about saint seiya they would not print it, you did not say a good thing about it so don't ask to publishers to print it cause a review like this does not give hope at all
Just worth emphasizing, the entire manga is available digitally on Viz's website and Comixology for legal purchase, all 28 volumes. Volume 1 has been available digitally from Viz since at least 2013.

St Seiya is fucking amazing I've always been a fan of that franchise. By the way," St Seiya lost Canvas "is at least for me the best of the franchise.
Hyoga was my GOAT, no one will ever rep a Cygnus like he did
Do an episode on Shaman King
I love saint seiya this is insane
Making it one of my missions.
I dislike the changes the anime has made to the story and characters but I also enjoy some of the additions it has.
I'm Ron Burgundy?
You can easily see how the poor dub and censorship of the anime in the us affected the popularity of Saint Seiya. Most videos you find of it are either not in english or just have barely any english comments.
This is why subbed anime is supreme. No censorship , fully uncut and more dramatic voiceover (the actors act the scenes together in a room unlike English dubs )
who doesnt like a tournament arc?
Do series like Shaman King, Reborn and BoBoBo
i watched the old anime and man it was the most repetitive show ive ever seen lol. but i loved the designs reminded me a lot of ronin warriors which i loved growing up
Ronin Warriors was actually inspired by Saint Seiya.
Epic
The anime is not CRAP!! It's amazing! only the u.s version is crap
No absolutly NOT! worth
Saint Seiya was never successful In the US
Your review is imcomplete.
