  • Just like how Ultraman is a big deal in Japan, Saint Seiya is HUGE. The original series is consistently in top anime lists, its manga sold over 30 million copies and Saint Seiya is said to be the main source of inspiration behind Bleach and Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. It’ s spawned video games, a musical, and has multiple series tied to it. No wonder Netflix is rebooting this anime! But with all that content, where do you even begin? I’m Kris Carr and today I’m talking to you about all the different Saint Seiya installments

Only REAL Avatar fans will no this one! It’s funny how canon works: no matter where in the landscape of content it occurs, if something is confirmed as canon it is 100% apart of the story. Take the Legend of Korra video game for instance. Did you know that there was another major villain that Korra had to defeat before the rise of the Red Lotus? If you played the video game you would! Find out all about them in our video documenting the greatest unknown threat Korra had to defeat: ua-cam.com/video/nDRHABLazrU/v-deo.html

the gender swap is important because Shun becomes the vessel for Hades later on... So it would also gender swap the last villain if the series goes that far..
Also there in the original anime, female saints were supposed to hide their face.... so if Shun is maskless it doesn't make sense that other female saints would be hiding their face.... so how would they fix that..

I say part of the reason it never got on was that it was licensed too late. It is a 80s anime being released in the early 2000s where shows like Yugioh, Zatch Bell, Rave Master, and DBZ are popular with cleaner animation, plus it was edited and dub like a 90s anime. (Talking about the Dic dub as ADV dub was 60 episodes uncut) You can probably tell where it starting to fall apart.

It’s strange to see how big Saint Seiya is around the globe but not in the US. Here in Brazil, it’s certainly the most famous anime (alongside Dragon Ball and Pokemon). Good to see americans talking about it.
PS: it’s a bad idea to change Shun’s sex in this new version. It all has to do with a big plot twist in Hades Saga. People who watched the show will know what I’m talking about.

      @Abinanta Maheswara Short answer: no.
Long answer: Saintia Sho, along with TLC, episode G and Omega are, on paper, written to happen in the same continuity as the OG manga. On paper. TLC is a prequel, Omega is a sequel and G and Sho happen somewhat simultaneously with the manga, but they go astray from it at some point (Sho being the one with the most fidelity to the source material) and none of what happens in any of the spin off who aren't written by Kurumada really has any effect on the manga continuity because of them being, well, not written by Kurumada. Kurumada may have had some involvement with some of them (he even personally requested for Saintia Sho to be made in the first place and he even named Sho and established her constellation) but even if they co exist with the og characters (and even interact with them) and continuity, in the big scheme of things, they exist each in their own separate universes. This applies even to the anime, which if not remembering wrong, Kurumada even considers it its own independent material.

As people have said in the comments, Saint Seiya's fanbase is just enormous in Latin America, Western Europe (specially France, Spain, Portugal and Italy) as well as in China. Here in Lat Am, similar how you guys had the Bleach-Naruto-One Piece "Big Three" of the early-mid 00's, Saint Seiya's was part of a similarly popular Shonen Trio of the early 90's, alongside Dragon Ball and Captain Tsubasa. I've watched the English dubbed version and, sorry to say this, the censorship really hit it hard. Also, yes, having it air 20 years after its release doesn't help at all

Ok I have several things to say about the netflix series:
    1. WHY IS SHUN A GIRL?! it completely misses the point of his character
    2. Why add another villain who wants to weponize saints and cloths to make the sanctuary obsolete from the background at the same time as the original story takes place????
    2. The new villian doesn't believe the whole "Saori is the reincarnation of Athena" thing......BUT HE'S STILL GETTING READY TO FIGHT POSEIDON AND HADES???
    4. Said villian sends regular soldiers with, tanks and assault choppers against saints traind to fight LITERAL GODS who at their worst are capable of superhuman feats and at their best can: create sub-zero temperatures in a desert, manipulate time (ala the world and/or king Crimson), move at speeds ranging from faster then the speed of sound to THE GODDAMM SPEED OF LIGHT and LITERALLY SEND PEOPLE TO HELL????
    5. Holy sh*t they rushed things!- In 6 episodes they cover: pegasus getting his cloth, The entire Galaxian wars, saori' backstory, and the entire Phoenix saint arc with the new villian shoved in the background......

The biggest moment for me that defined the characters were on the original anime was:
"I don't have the right to lose", were Saiya is covered on his own blood and barely alive and say those words. "I don't have the right to lose, not yet" and his opponent was speechless for his determination and courage.
Shiryu's rage agnaist certian evil saint, was amaizing. "You call yourself justice? You kill innocent people and even kids, and now you took away the precious person to me..." and later on a movie "You say justice is power? So, let me show what true power looks like".
The netflix adaption doesn't do justice to the series.
BTW, the Abel movie "The crismon youth" is a reference at the saints. Young warriors that defy the gods and covered on their own blood, is a way to say Saints fight until the bitter end.
    Grettings from Mexico.

Lan Piers For a standard kids show, the newer Netflix show isn’t a bad introduction for newcomers. That being said, it changes A LOT from the original anime and manga. I’m not just talking about Shun being a girl, but there’s like filler villains and the entire plot feels like it’s going at the speed of fucking light. It took the original show nearly 50 episodes to get to where the Netflix show is RIGHT NOW with just like 12. It’s EXTREMELY rushed with a light speed pacing or it feels substantially shorter, with very little development for most of the cast outside of Seiya and Saori. If you’ve watched the original or any of the spin-offs, then the Netflix version will feel like a downgrade. There’s also the fact that the newer one is very sanitized. The original was surprisingly bloody at time, but this newer show has little blood in it. Like, it has a few moments where they show some blood, but the original was straight up Fist of the North Star levels of bloody. lol I think there’s stuff to enjoy with the newer show if you’re new to Saint Seiya, but older fans don’t really need to bother with it.

Also, (I know I'm maybe commenting too much but I OH LOVE THIS FRANCHISE SO MUCH), if you're up to some reading there's also some written media that expand on this universe:
    - Saint Seiya Next Dimension: It's the canonical, official sequel and prequel of the original story, written by the original author
    - Saint Seiya Episode G: Similar to Soul of Gold it expands on the life of the Gold Saints, but this time during their younger years. It has sequel called Episode G Assassin which explores alternate realities
-Saint Seiya The Lost Canvas Gaiden: There's one for each Gold Saint in the Lost Canvas and it shows how different other mythologies other than the Greek interact within this world, as well as expanding their characters even further.
There are also novels, CD Dramas, and an entire official and canonical encyclopedia

I haven't even watched any of the original installments, but based on animation alone it looks better than the Netflix series (which I only discovered because The Struts, one of my favorite bands, performed the theme song for).
The entire ~120 minutes I spent binge watching I kept thinking to myself, "This story has incredible potential but it feels rushed and unfinished. Animation is sadly becoming a lost art."

The Netflix version lacks the build up, the graceful animation and the epic orchestration of the original anime. There's no sense of pacing, no stakes, no violence, no weight or consequences. The character development and bonds of friendship between the protagonists is so rushed and superficial. This is worse than a Pixar or Dreamworks kind of animation. Very childish and kiddy. And I was blown away by the original being 5 years old. The gore had a meaning behind it. It wasn't just mindless and free violence. There was a lot of sacrifice and tears behind every limb dismemberment, piercing and bloodshed. All that with a strong moral teaching of friendship, love, perseverance, honor and never giving up to adversity and evil.
To Americans: Is there a way to see the original anime completely uncut and uncensored? From what I've read the complains that being a meh anime makes me wonder what kind of version did the localization did you get exposed to. I don't understand how DBZ got so big in the US even with all the censorship it got. I guess cutting most of the elements that made Saint Seiya huge around the world was that.
I just wished that they could make some kind of restoration and/or remaster of the original one. The technology is there. DBZ got DBZ Kai.

Eventually, DBZ got a proper uncensored version aired here in the USA on Cartoon Network which is currently airing both DBZ Kai and DBS. Also, the whole series was released on DVD, though many American fans often nowadays stream it on sites like Crunchyroll. As for Saint Seiya, it got a proper uncut release on DVD in the 2000's in contrast to the abortive run on TV and now the whole series has been rereleased.

Hi, I’m a Huge Saint Seiya Fan, I have watched everything mentioned in the video. I gotta say, it is my favorite anime. I live in Mexico, so it is very big here as well as in most of Latin America and Europe. The original is a Master Piece, The Hades Ova’s are good, especially the Sanctury Arc. I have seen all the movies, and I loved Heaven Chapter: Overture, even though it is a little confusing. Omega was eh, but Soul of Gold was Epic (In my opinion) I really liked it, they even made a theatrical release here in which I was lucky enough to get myself an official Saint Seiya: Soul of Gold Popcorn Bucket. The Saintia Sho anime was a little disappointing, but the manga of it was awesome!!! And Lost Canvas is also pretty cool, amazing as well I would say, unfortunately the anime was canceled after 2 seasons and left the story unfinished, Lucky for us, we can still read the manga, and trust me, it gets better. And Saint Seiya Netflix.... We don’t talk about that. Overall a very good video, very well explained. My only negative point is that I think you should have at least mentioned the manga exclusive stories, like Saint Seiya Next Dimension, Saint Seiya Lost Canvas Gaiden, Saint Seiya Episode G, Saint Seiya Episode G Assassin, Saint Seiya Episode Zero, and Saint Seiya Origins. There’s also another spinoff based on the Marin Generals on the works. I have a couple of videos in my channel talking about that of you want to check it out. The show is so old that its kind of difficult to grasp how much it stuck out of the rest of anime productions of that specific time. When it arrived in France in 87 it basically evaporated every other show running on TV (Dragon Ball, City Hunter, Fist of the North Star) and emptied streets as just all kids from 8-14 were glued to the screen. I think the last sanctuary episode still owns an audience record up to this day.
The US just got it way too late and after a lot of exposuree to newer 90's shows like DBZ. The changes and censorship also didn't help. No wonder it failed.

just watched the first 5 episodes for the new Netflix adaptation and the things that most stood out for me were the animation and the environment. I'm honestly impressed at all the work the studio has put up, many many praises!
The characters have subtle redesigns that look pretty faithful to the original material in my opinion. Though one of the main characters was turned into a female, and its not as bad as I thought. Im ok with this change so far since I feel the creators haven't exploited this sex change and it doesn't feel so intrusive to the narrative been told. The character with the sex change in question, Shun, was portrayed a bit feminine with his demeanor and physique compared to the rest of the cast. Shit - I remember as kids nobody wanted to play as him because he was considered to be 'gay'. Pretty stupid if you ask me.. There is this one character that had a minor role as Seiya's rival, Cassius, and he was given a bit more of exposition this time which I'm glad they did.
As an avid fan of the original series I'm enjoying myself so far but I do have some minor points that haven't met my selfish expectations. For instance I feel the music didn't woosh me; It definitely hits some high moments during the show so far, but it can't be compare to Seiji Yokoyama's take. The opening and ending themes are also surprisingly catchy, but the lyrics are so bland and devoid of any real meaning. A bit of a shame since the compositions are to my liking.
There's minor nitpicks like the Knights not wearing their helmet which honestly disappointed me, there is also this teleportation 'technique' some of the Bronze Knights use during the Galaxian War tournament that doesn't make any sense and it really feels out of place.
The story feels a bit rushed so far, and I would like to see some more down time between the main cast. With that said thought there was this massive exposition dump during the first episode that dragged on for a bit, thought I feel it was necessary for newcomers.
Now the voice cast... starting with this: why were some of the characters names changed for the American audience?? I will say in that for the FIRST time in my life the American dub is actually pretty darn good!! I'm honestly impressed and I was looking forward on watching it with the English dub - but sadly I couldn't follow thru with the unnecessary name changes that took me out of the experience. The Spanish dub in the other hand is a bit of a mixed bag, with some of the original voice actor reprising their roles. I'm happy since that is how I watched it as a kid.
I would like to share some more of my thought but I don't want to turn this comment into a review, this is just my honest opinion..
    Go watch it people!

I started with Lost Canvas and it's legit my favorite installment in the series. Though a fair warning to those who don't know, Lost Canvas is only two seasons that only covers the first 95 chapters of the manga(which is 233 chapters in total). In other words, to get the full story for lost canvas will have to read the manga. Also, the anime doesn't even end in a way that makes the manga optional, so yeah.
As for the original series, the game Saint Seiya: Soldier's Soul is a good way to experience the original series four major arcs quicker than watching it, though it does exclude showing the Galaxian War, Black Saints and Pope Ares stuff, which are only mentioned during cutscenes.
My personal viewing order would be as such:
Lost Canvas(you can choose to watch the anime then move to the manga starting at chapter 96 or just read the manga from the start instead, I did the former)
Original series plus Hades OVAs(I lump the two together since they should be one)
Then you can watch either the Heaven Overture, or Soul of Gold, since they both are set right after the Hades arc(though Heaven Overture might be non-canon). Either watch one then the other, but Soul of Gold is a definite reccomendation.
Then go to Omega, since chronologically its latest in terms of the time its set. Ive heard that people dislike Omega for various reasons like the introduction of an element system that was a clear copy of Chakra Natures from Naruto, but I liked it. Art style and chatacter designs were gorgerous and reminded me of Casshern Sins(which I love that anime), especially how the legs were sometimes drawn(they might've shared a character artist). And the opening themes were all badass.
Also, a Lost Canvas was made by a different author and is actually a retelling of the manga, Saint Seiya Next Dimension.

In the late '80s when Saint Seiya was being aired in Japan and Hong Kong, you couldn't go an hour without hearing other kids talking about it, or seeing advertisements for a huge variety of their toys on TV (wish I held on to those, those original toys are all worth a small fortune now). It was so popular that the valedictorian of my middle school worked it into her graduation speech, and even politicians! The late-'80s were truly the golden era of manga and anime, with Saint Seiya topping the popularity list, followed closely by the first few original Gundam series, Captain Tsubasa, Orange Road, and Touch. Fun fact, Dragon Ball was popular, but not nearly as popular as the rest of those I just short-listed. Imagine the surprise when I was in college in New York in the 2000s, and I found kids in their 20s binging something that I watched casually when I was 6.
Also, many animes have to introduce original content simply because they caught up to the manga's storyline, and adding a whole original chapter is just to buy time. More often, these contents are not very well received, but it was not the case for Saint Seiya - The whole Asgardian chapter is considered to be one of the most popular arcs in the Seiya universe.

I watched the series almost at the same time it was airing in Japan. Latin America was lucky to get must of Japanese anime. Its just the best of the world. Mazinger Z, Astro Boy, Robotech, Queen Millennia among my favorites. Caballeros del Zodiaco (Saint Seya) was huge among kids, I woke up every Saturday morning to watch episodes when I was 8 or 7 years old. It is good that Netflix its bringing this huge classic to new generations, we can all benefit of new technology (better graphics, sound, high definition etc) but Netflix needs to stick to the story (which it appears they are doing for most part) but I just came from watching season 1 and its going (everything happening) to fast!! I think they have covered a lot and just leaving some of the story behind. I like the new graphics though, its good to have a fresh version but do it right and slow.

Agreed, the animation is lesser in the fight scenes, only Maryn wears a mask, wich spoils a lot. People picks at Shawn for not being violent or thought enough, but she is a girl, so why people(in universe) have the same spectations that they had with her male version.
Shiryu is know totally wise from the start instead of the arrogant fighter he was in the original version.
Ikki has no reason to wanting vengeance against anyone.

SPOILERS TO THE KNIGHTS OF THE ZODIAC NETFLIX SHOW
TL;DR, There are MANY reasons why I prefer original infinitely more than adaptation.
as someone who grew up with saint seiya, I'm bound to have nostalgia-bias - I simply couldn't keep watching the netflix adaptation after 3 eps. i'll only compare the content within these eps but even then there were just too many bones for me to pick at:
--the introduction of seiya's character, cocky and brazen, was presented so much better in the original imo; where in the netflix version he just seems dumbfounded and follows/just does whatever he's told to (kido tells him to go sanctuary --> marin tells him go to this random manhole) the original paints him in a lot more rebellious and carefree manner, be it his cheeky smile as he plucks cassius' ear off, to complimenting shaina's good looks, to showing up and basically hating saori; just a more interesting protagonist to root for.
--I don't like how they gave him and her sister an abduction prequel scene, and how easily he seemed to have shrugged that trauma off by the time he grew up. Knowing about his sister a few eps in was what gave the lone stallion seiya an anchorage and heart, someone he cared about; giving him that connection first, then trying to paint him as the same typa character just doesn't work. Also i can see they try to write him as a 'funny guy' (that's a direct quote guys), but honestly he just seems whiny and overall weak to me.
--Also introducing Saori already as athena, as well as her being CONSCIOUS of this, just feels so JARRING TO ME; a big part of the character development of saori was realizing her importance as athena guardian of earth, slowly but surely rising above her grandpa-clinging, ojou-san energy. this new version completely cancels that progression while making it seem like she's taking this gig LIGHTLY, and it's just so irksome to watch. in this regard even the 2014 cg movie did better by preserving saori stumbling upon this realisation. seiya's character development also revolved around realising the importance of athena, distancing himself from seeing saori as that bitchy girl from childhood to the incarnation of a goddess, and while i'm not sure if that's still to come in the adaptation, what's already presented doesnt give me hope about this point
--small point, but is it just pure cringe when i hear characters tryna say japanese/mandarin? 'pegasus rye you say ken' *shudders* also MAGNUS? LONG? LOOOOOONG? I get you're tryna make japanese names more pronunciable but come ON maaan *shudder intensifies*
--personally I feel a lot of the hype was killed by the lack of music. the presence of fanfare and edgy synth music was palpable in the original, and honestly made for a more dramatic and exciting viewing; replacing the flashy bgm with more subtle string/orchestral non-diegetic accompaniment substantially killed the excitement for me; it doesn't help that the CG look also means they take out alot of the natural embellishment of actions that traditional animation can give.
all in all there are MANY things that I can't like about this new series. Call me a rotten die-hard oldie fan but this adaptation struck so many strings wrong you might as well call it a new instrument. dont get me wrong, it simply existing made me feel so good since it seemed the world hadn't forgotten about saint seiya (it's basically unheard of in australia). but if THIS is what will get new fans into this amazing series
    *gulp*
*can't believe i'm about to say this*
even saint seiya omega did a better job.

In the original manga (paper, not TV), all the bronze saint are sibling, they all have grandpa kiddo as father. After Aiolos told Kido about athena and Saints before dying, he gave birth to hundred of children hoping they would become saints. Only Shun and Ikki share the same mother. Hyoga discovered this and and was sent by Sanctuary to kill the bronze saints for siding a false athena (which is covered in the netflix version, not in the first animé), then Ikki discovered it too and was so disgusted that he hated the bronze saint. Also in the manga, it's assumed that Seiya and Seika have the same mother but different father (Seiya father still Kido). In the first animé, they are just orphans sent far away.

Saint Seiya deserves the title of king of shounen anime. It's is the one who opened the door to imagination for other magaka to create in their mangas. It's came with characters with cosmic power and high technic. Dragon Ball itself learned from Kurumada's ideas. If it wasn't for Saint Seiya, we wouldn't have seen Goku's transformations in Dragon Ball, and if it wasn't for Saint Seiya, we wouldn't have seen rulers The destruction in the super because Saint Seiya is the first one who started these scenarios and developed cosmic characters in the eighties, and it is the one who started this fashion of anime, but it is very in front of Dragon Ball

The original creator is actually continuing the manga. He renamed it Saint Seiya: Next Dimension. It picks up right where Hades ended. Athena travels to find Chronos so she can go back in time and save Seiya from Hades curse. The original creator has said before in interviews and shown in some books that he had plans for a Chronos arc and a final arc with Zeus as the final villain. You can read Saint Seiya: Next Dimension online. It has yet to be released officially in English but there are groups fan translating the chapters. The creator is currently on hiatus but is expected to be back to continue writing soon.

Hell no, it didn't. Only 6 recurring voice actors to voice 100 characters, who end up sounding all the same. Butchered names, lots of mistranslations, voices that change from one episode to the other, some VA totally miscast (Marc François and his annoying nasal whine, Henry Djanik as Alcor Bud or Siren Sorrento, grandpa Serge Bourrier as Andromeda Shun, WTF?!?)...
Some voice actors _were_ pretty damn good (Eric Legrand, Laurence Crouzet or Virginie Ledieu), and at times the translation/adaptation was really brilliant. But on the whole, it was a half-assed job done by people who didn't care in the slightest (I'm talking about the AB group, not the voice actors who remained profesional the whole time).

They turn Shun into a girl for a very dumb reason plus they have her not wearing a mask for no reason at all even though they're having female characters wearing mask.

@@MrCreepjo If that was the only issue with the new anime, it would be really good.
My main issue is how rushed it is. Skipped plotlines, short fights (which were not that long to begin with), background from the main characters are similar but again, it goes too fast to really care, etc.
I'm not sure what the big idea was, rush through the beginning part to get to the very popular Sanctuary Arc? I don't know. Seems like a missed opportunity to fix many issues with the beginning of the manga. Instead, they made it worse.

Saint seiya is the best anime ever! Everyone should see it , it's so epic and intense. The music, the soundtrack , the colors , cosmos and it's so dramatic! All these are REALLY WORTH WATCHING! This is my first anime that I ever watched. Saint seiya should be mentioned please!
The Netflix version is not worth watching at all, you would get confused of how the plot is put, the characters and the backstories, and the biggest thing that I don't like is that Shun is a Girl!! Everybody please elevate your cosmos and watch the 1ST EPISODE of this entire series.

Aside from watching every single episode from the anime (Poseidon Arc being a personal favorite), I grew to be quite a big fan of Saint Seiya when I was a kid - including Dragon Ball & Captain Tsubasa (or aka Super Campeones to us in Lat. America). At first, I was excited to see Netflix add a 3d Adaptation to their list with some “Modernized” changes, but as to some may have mentioned, seeing Shun as a girl THAN as a guy was rather.........weird.
I don’t have any issues for the gender change but to see how “certain” events come to happen, mostly the Hades one; it will rub off a little bit more confusing as to when Shun learns his (now her) EX/Special ability down the road soooo for some reason it feels like some “censoring” may occur to those instances...

So what did I start with in order of watching Saint Seiya?
Episode one of the original Saint Seiya.
Long, long ago ... in a city ... well, in the city I live now ... there was a group of people that watched Japanese animated television series, movies, OVAs and whatnot. Back then people would call it Japanimation more than anime.
So an ancient technology was around at the time known as VHS. I know that may be an alien term to many people, but, like the 8-track tape, VHS was recorded on a magnetic tape. Seriously, it really did exist!
Back then, you couldn't go online to purchase anime. You had to scrounge for it. Sometime you could find some in video stores, but mostly you had to get a copy by possibly buying from bootleggers at Cons (once that started happening) or link-up with a branch of people that loved anime that lived on the west coast or weirdly enough Texas. These people had access to tapes and would trade tapes ... by mail ... postal mail.
Who knows what you were getting until you put these things in a VHS player and started them up. Most of the times they were 3 or 4 generation tapes at the very least. If you were lucky, tracking lines at the bottom or top were the only issue (color bleed and screen going wonky wasn't out of the question once you were at 5th-10th generation tapes ... this was all private copying so the recording machine could be going south and the duplicator not even knowing it)
If I remember correctly, one shipment of these mystical tapes included Saint Seiya, Hokuto no Ken, and probably like Super Dimension Century Orguss. I already had been exposed Saint Seiya as a concept from somewhere, probably an APA (Amatuer Press Association - google this versus APA) like Japanimation magazine. At any rate, there it was. Saint Seiya in all it's glory. In Japanese. With no subtitles.
Back then, that is how we watched all anime. A crappy copy in Japanese with no subtitles, and we loved it.
Saint Seiya rocked. I can't say I'm a die hard fan, but my fan love for Saint Seiya still lasts to this day.
