Love you Channel Awesome
TBT, I think a lot of Doug's videos are about talking about things they're passionate about, even if they are trending like Doug's videos on modern animation.
Honestly, people call out Doug for doing non nostalgic subjects, but I think it makes the show more interesting. He's basically comparing the what worked in the past to what works now. His videos now not only help me appreciate good art of the past, but also makes me happy to be living in a world with the kind of art we have now, like a world where a friggin candy brand can lead to multidemensional cartoon characters that are beloved by both kids and adults. I doubt that would ever happen before the 80s or nineties. It's what makes me agree with him about making a movie or at least a TV show with them. We're living in a world where Lego can be seen as a true art form or storytelling device! Honestly, as much as I liked Doug's review of foodfight, one thing I would state if I reviewed it that very few people do, is that the idea has potential. It had a chance to take these one dimensional food mascots and make them fully fleshed out characters, and they blew it.
John Goodman and Billy West voicing the M&Ms characters are kind of what brought them personalities. Most of those commercials from the 90s are still relevant.
As much as we hate being sold to, sometimes we forget how much of an art marketing can be at times; especially when it's not invasive or degrading. These M&M commercials don't feel like we're being sold anything because they're just downright fun. If anyone's interested, there's a great podcast called Under the Influence that really explores marketing from an insider's perspective. It really makes you appreciate and respect the shit out of advertising.
In my opinion, there's one more reason why M&M sketches are more than commercials. M&M doesn't actually NEED any advertising nowadays. Everybody knows what it is. Yet they still make those. True, there are other examples of "making commercials just in case" (McDonalds, Coca-Cola), but the huge difference is that there are actual Characters, as you've already pointed out. And since the characters here are fleshed out and they don't need to heavily advertise the product (just a reminder would do), I guess they simply have fun with these commercials. ANd that's why they are so good.
JK Simmons is one of those actors that can appear in any media form and he’s completely welcomed. Think about it, he’s done films, tv, animated tv and movies, the M&M commercials, the list goes on and on. But he always owns every role he’s in
Doug, a little feedback regarding the charity shoutouts - I don't skip them because they're after the credits, I skip them because the overwhelming majority of them are US-only. They either don't accept donations from outside the US or are focused on helping people within the US. A few times I've seen international charities, but they're few and far in between. Granted, I've been skipping them for a while now, maybe things have changed, but I'd love to see more charities which help out internationally.

Even the ad for the paid promotion is funny (and the product is generally useful and relatable). And of course Doug always makes room to raise awareness for a good cause. Just keep being you Doug, and the rest of the NC staff too.
White M&M? Hmm... ~Now this looks like a job for me, so everybody just follow me 'Cause we need a little piece of candy, and it feels so empty without me~
I'll be honest, I knew Blue was one of the characters but I had absolutely no idea what his personality was. It probably comes from the fact that I haven't seen any of his original commercials, but it seems like they completely gave up on him after his concept flopped and while he may still be in some commercials, he has no lines or actions that define him at all, he's just a background character now.
It’s nice seeing more traditional editorials again. I enjoy the mini reviews as much as any other review, but these videos put a little more verity in them and I often learn something new or look at something different than before
I'll be honest, I think what cemented them was the Christmas ad. A good Christmas ad is what you need to cement a character like this. Everyone knows the M&M christmas ad, just like everyone knows the coca cola bear or the budweiser clydesdales. They were good characters, but those come and go. What kept them around was that ad, which cemented them as icons.
That's the point Nostalgia Critic made in the video. They kept replaying that ad every Christmas for the past 20 years that eventually everyone knew them from that Christmas ad.
The Christmas ad is one I vividly remember watching as a kid and that one premiered when I was almost 8 years old (in December of 1996) so it’s been around for 22 holiday seasons. It was also a commercial that both me and my dad found funny, which was quite a rare thing in the 90s
Great episode. I've growing up with the M&m characters since I was a kid, the one with the late BB King cracked me up as a kid. I had no idea that the older ones had the vocal talents of John Goodman, John Lovitz, Phil Hartman, and JK Simmons, so this episode covered some good chocolate coated history. :)
@@k-leb4671 yeah there is that but I was referring to the adverts mainly. The advert we have had for the last 5 years is this one where a man walks in on his wife cheating, but she's actually eating red. It's so overplayed that it's become annoying. Anyway. I prefer smarties.
"Late 80's Michael Keaton movie"? You mean Beetlejuice? Why don't you just call it Beetlejuice? No one's going to complain about you simply calling the movie Beetlejuice. Oh god, what have I done?
I don't think it's that bad. But there is the Netflix show that covers all of the books. It's not Harry Potter good but as far as movies that are based on books it's OK
I was reading the books (up to the 8th I think) when that movie came out. So disappointed with how they portrayed Olaf and the weird alterations they made with the plot. They downplayed his maniacal side and played up the comedic side which is something the books never did (he actually becomes more of a sympathetic character towards the end). The Netflix series is much, much better, in fact, there's a bunch of times where they quote the books line for line. My only complaint is that they downplayed Friday's significance, which is pretty minor.
I thought they good a great job on that movie actually. Baudelairs were all spot on, jim Carey playing a character whom plays himself in different disguises was perfect casting and he delivered on the performance. Changes had to be made to adapt three books in a short movie time. I enjoyed it...
So i looked it up and the charlie and the chocolate factory book came out in 1964, while the chocolate was licensed in 1971, with the film coming out later in the year. so the wonka choclate was marketing for the movie, not the other way around.
There’s no way in hell the M&M company would allow their beloved mascots to appear in that trash. Plus the actual commercials had much better animation than the Foodfight, so it would actually be quite the downgrade for the M&M gang.
@@Musiclover19 well, I'm sure when it was first announced, the brands that agreed to include their characters actually liked the idea of the film (one of the main reasons I consider food fight to be one of animations biggest disappointments is the idea actually sounds good) and hoped they would be represented in a good, somewhat satirical way. Man, were they wrong.
I want blue sky to be involved because blue skies Studios made some really good movies like the Peanuts movie and Ice Age and Blue Sky Studios is owned by Fox and fox is owned by Disney so it is movie was released on DVD or Blu-ray it will be on Disney Plus
I might be in the minority here, but I think Warner bros animation could do the brand justice. After all, The Lego movies were huge hits (for a short time). As long as they get a good story for it ( not to mention avoid the problem that befell the later Lego movies with franchise fatigue), and this could be their next big hit. And besides: this sounds like a way more interesting idea than the Funko movie in production. Yes really, that's going to be a thing in future. yay 😪
Who knew a 2o minute video on the M&M mascots would be so interesting. I kinda love it I would love to see more videos like this with other food mascots if you were ever interested making more like these.
So good to see Doug making these editorials again, I love hearing his more in-depth thoughts on the more obscure aspects of popular culture like this. Also, I would love a review of that freaky Mark Twain stop-motion film. It's not bad, but is just so bizarrely strange and scary in that bizarrely 80's way that it would really lend itself to the NC treatment.
I would LOVE to see an M&Ms movie. It could probably be a advertisement commentary as they're fully aware that they're mascots for a candy. If we got an Emoji movie, why can't we get this?
The same actor who voiced Elmyra Duff (from Tiny Toon Adventures), Susie Carmichael (from Rugrats), Foxxy Love (from Drawn Together), Mo (from Horrible Histories), Dulcy (from Sonic the Hedgehog), Cynder (from The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning), Roller Brawl (from Skylanders) and many others across the media.
Notice the female M&M's the green and brown one never get alluded to get eaten by men who want to date them/jerk off to them... As a female, I HATED those commercials. Fem&m's Most likely feminists and cucks made those cringey ads and majority of cringey ads in general.
Red-The Egotistical Leader Yellow-The Bumbling Sidekick Green-The Hot Love Interest Blue-The Cool Guy Rival(Well he was, seriously, look at the commercials that had Phil Hartman voice him...But since Phil is dead, and he was the only one who could do the role, it's no wonder why he's now the silent one in the background) Orange-The Scardy Cat (Much like Chuckie Finster from Rugrats) Brown-The Overconfident "I'm better than everyone else" Woman (some may even call her the Tsundere)
After watching this it brings to mind why it's difficult to transition a short 30 second commercial to a 2 hour film. The writing. Star Trek experienced this problem on multiple occasions where you might be able to fill out an episode, but then you have something like an extra hour and 30 minutes to twiddle your thumbs. It can quickly and easily become a cluster fuck that'll end up being reviewed in places like this.
I can see an M&M's movie where the candies are having to deal with normal everyday problems, until they deal with a world threat in the form of another candy that hires the chocolate bar as a henchman, caramel as the evil genius and the pretzel as the mole in the ranks. This candy will have a name feared by all... Reese, voiced by Eminem

It probably comes from the fact that I haven't seen any of his original commercials, but it seems like they completely gave up on him after his concept flopped and while he may still be in some commercials, he has no lines or actions that define him at all, he's just a background character now.
It’s nice seeing more traditional editorials again. I enjoy the mini reviews as much as any other review, but these videos put a little more verity in them and I often learn something new or look at something different than before
Seth Howell Verity? You mean variety?
My thoughts exactly.

Those are so addicting!
Oh yeah? He should have rmentioned those little wild minis that caused havoc. But as Doug did say, they did make a lot of side characters.
I would watch an M&Ms movie.
I remember the contest when Blue was introduced. I think before that they had tan M&Ms in the bag.
You do realize that Wonka Candy company started at the same time as the original movie came out, right?
Micheal Keaton as Beetlejuice is a great representative of me as the an audience member, because I literally said "Why?" like a second before he did.
My timing was strangely on par.

Can you do review Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events with Jim Carrey in 2004 movie please
Oh he looooooooves Jim Carrey movies
I thought they good a great job on that movie actually. Baudelairs were all spot on, jim Carey playing a character whom plays himself in different disguises was perfect casting and he delivered on the performance. Changes had to be made to adapt three books in a short movie time. I enjoyed it...
He d have to read the books to do it properly

There’s no way in hell the M&M company would allow their beloved mascots to appear in that trash. Plus the actual commercials had much better animation than the Foodfight, so it would actually be quite the downgrade for the M&M gang.
@@Musiclover19 well, I'm sure when it was first announced, the brands that agreed to include their characters actually liked the idea of the film (one of the main reasons I consider food fight to be one of animations biggest disappointments is the idea actually sounds good) and hoped they would be represented in a good, somewhat satirical way. Man, were they wrong.

An M&Ms movie could be great.
Just as long as Sony doesn't get involved...

It can quickly and easily become a cluster fuck that'll end up being reviewed in places like this.
