    I bought one and I love it; it makes a great compact, light weight Spring, Summer, Fall quilt. Use a fleece liner if you need more warmth.

    I'm considering getting two of these. I'm a hammock camper so I am thinking about putting straps on one for the under quilt and leaving the other as is for the top. I appreciate that you brought this gear to the channel. That last video you posted has been added to my saved favorite list on youtube. I didn't even have a list till that video! Thank Darwin!

    LOVE my Enlightened Equipment Revelation 20 deg quilt. It absolutely rocks. Good thing about the quilt in warmer weather is it can be opened up and vents well. But this would be a great alternative for my scout sons who camp often and don't need to take their bulkier cold weather mummy bags on every adventure. Thanks for the great vid as usual.

    Dear Darwin, I just discovered your videos this week, really like them! One thing I would like to see, being European, is additional (text) metric sizes. Currently I'm just googling the relevant ones, but for your European audience, it might be neat!
    Thank you for your videos!
    Cheers

    Great review! I recently switched from the SnugPak Hammock Quilt to the Aegismax and got a compression sack for my WarBonnet Blackbird XLC. I always bring the bug net and winter top cover for the hammock (just in case) so there is no real weight savings there. The Aegismax, however, saves me more than a pound of weight and with everything in compression sacks I've got a complete shelter system (hammock, tree straps, whoopies, biners, bug net, winter top cover, tarp, sleeping bag and liner) in a package just a little bit bigger than two twenty ounce water bottles. It may not seem like much, but considering that just a few years ago a decent sleep system would take up half your pack, that's super impressive. I'm a bigger guy, which means all my clothing is bigger and heavier and every cubic inch saved is super valuable. Thanks again for the great review!

    I just ordered a western Mountaineering Megalite. It's a 30°
    It's roomy and I plan to use it as a quilt &
    I could get the Agismax as a liner for when it's colder to combine the two for lower temps.

      I have used the lightweight Aegis as a liner inside my primary bag when camped at high elevation or colder temps. It works well like that.

    I have this bag. Wash it in Nikwash and it changes the bag immensely but I think it is really a 50 degree bag. I have the M2 as well. That is a great 3 season bag.

    Hi Darwin, usually for these brands those temperatures rates are limit temperatures. Therefore you are right about 40 - 45º. The model M2 (400 grs filling) has a 35º rate.

      with just a base layer? im curious

    • @cjt5mith
      @cjt5mith 6 років тому +1

      Having looked round a whole load of reviews, the consensus seems to be that this one is more or less a 40°F / 5°C bag, and the M2 is more or less a 30°F / 0°C bag. Obviously everyone sleeps differently and wearing more clothes or using a bivvy bag would improve those ratings. Also many people say washing both these bags in down wash as soon as you get them helps a lot.

    And for $85 they also offer an envelope style sleeping bag that fully unzips to make a quilt. I ordered one last night to replace my woobie blanket for summer camping. I'm 6'3", so I sure hope that it fits. For the price I don't mind taking a chance because my EE quilt set me back $358.

      It fits great and is better quality than I expected. It is tapered, meaning that it is about 8" wider at the shoulders than at the feet which is what I was hoping for. It weighs in at 20.5oz. The compression sack that it comes in is too small in my opinion because it compresses the down to such an extreme that it takes the quit a few hours to fully fluff back up, so I use a larger sil-nylon stuff sack that I had. It also comes with a nice storage bag. I have used this quilt for about a week and it is true to it's rating (45 F). The only problem that I have is that after a few nights the down seems to travel down towards the foot and so I have to shake it out upside down every few nights to even out the down. Overall, this was an excellent buy at just $85 and I recommend it. It is not as nice as my Enlightened equipment quilt, but it is comparable and a lot less expensive.

    • @SBVCP
      @SBVCP 6 років тому

      45F with just base layer? do you think with a really thin 100 microfleece or similar would it be ok in 32F/0°C? and about the down rolling off.. didnt it have sewn baggles? i mean, it rolls on its baffle or ALL the way down? (pun not intended) how easy it was to fluf it back up after it? thank you! if this bag works it would be really great..
      [Background] - I live in Argentina, where the usual salary is not much higher than 500dls - and that basic salary isnt enough to live but thats totally aside - things here, the few that actually reaches the country are WAY too overpriced. If you try to buy things from outside the country..well, before (it was a dark age for that..) you couldnt even buy internationally.. now, you are limited to 2kg/200dls and USPS, with a 50% tax on the product pricetag, or UPS but only 5 shippings anually per person, and yest they charge taxes too (the company)...that, avoiding the "uh, im sorry we dont ship to argentina..yes to literally every other country around you, but not you!" policy everyone including amazon has.
      So, yeah, for me is, this (on aliexpress, USPS) or a kelty cosmic down 20 which it may be confortable to a bit lower temperature but is almostdouble the price (with taxes), WAY heavier and bulkier and i owould need to wait someone that goes to USA to buy it..

    I own one of these, if you hold it up to the light you will see that the fill is very spotty...you will have a lot of gaps in the fill... Cold spots....now if you use this in very warm summer months ...you might get by with it for a week, but I would not recommend using it for your full-time bag, the construction is at best medium quality...

    I’ve used the Agismax UL on a number of trips this last year. Great bag for the price. Having broad shoulders, I use mine like a quilt. I would rate this bag in the 40F range. Anything less than that and you will get chilled if you don’t wear warm clothes to bed.

  • @sportsman48
    @sportsman48 7 років тому

    Mine arrived today. I'll be wearing some extra clothes as the temperatures are supposed to dip just below 40. I wanted to take a couple more pounds out of my pack as I'm going on a steep and long hike. I'll report back when I return.

      How'd it work out?

    • @sportsman48
      @sportsman48 3 роки тому

      @@tomcosgrove8005 not my idea of a good time. I'd recommend this bag only for summer trips where you know it's going to be warm at night and you have a good pad. The first night I slept in the ground and had a 1.5R pad with a fly over the top. It worked ok. The next night I didn't have a good spot so I pitched my hammock. A storm system moved in and I tossed all night. If I hadnt packed a puffy I would have been in big trouble. Since then I've picked up a 20 degree bag that's about 3.5 pounds and infinitely more worth it and a one man tent. My sleep and shelter system is about 3 pounds more now but I can be out in sub freezing conditions with more safety margin
      This bag is good for the weight but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

    Hi Darwin. Which size bag did you review - the regular (170cm/5'7) or large (190cm/6'3)? The reason I ask is because I'm 5'3" and I do pull my quilt over my head at times. So, I'm wondering -- if yours is a regular and it comes up to your neck, do you think a regular will for me? And thanks for sharing this video. Loved it.

    Darwin - I've been doing sections of the NCT from MI to MN since mid June. I've spent many nights with this bag. End of August, temps at night dropped to 30 in MN with daytime rain adding to the fun. For my old bones, thus bag works just fine. With more and more nights dropping between 30 and 40 coming up, I'm considering adding a layer when I head back out for my next 212 mile section. For anyone considering this bag I'll mention I am about five-ten & also a side sleeper who likes to curl his legs up. I am just comfortable with the size. Would I like it a little bigger? Heck ya. Am I thrilled with it as is for the price? Heck Ya. Side Note - I'm thinking you reviewed the gear top tent I have been using too. Also a great budget item.

    I'd say 40° is about right. For $107 there's another Aegismax on Amazon has about 6 more ounces of down (420grams) that should be good down to 25-30°. Also on Amazon there is a related bag called "Wind Hard" (used to be Aegismax wind hard) that is an EE revelation clone except Its sewn through and can be worn as a poncho rated 32 ° 850fp and exactly a lb. for $105. Hard to beat those options for a full 3 season down bag for a hundred bucks.

    What about the logic of spending about $25 more and getting AegisMax with a 0 degree rating and leaving it slightly open if it is too hot? I have read reviews of this particular one you reviewed maybe not being enough in the 30-40 degree range. Those temps seem normal enough even in the spring or fall if it is a lower temp night. I guess I'm saying, it happens often enough to warrant the lower rated temp bag. Help me if I am missing something. Thanks! Great videos btw. Honest assessments. Much appreciated.

      Not sure which bag you're referring to but the M3 (Comfort:+0°C / 32°F Lower Limit:-5°C / 23°F Extreme: -22°C / -8°F) I think is a bit warmer than the one I think you're talking about but judging from my experience with the bag Darwin reviewed (Ultralight: Comfort:+11° C/52° F/ Lower Limit:+6° C/43° F/ Extreme:-9° C/15° F), without a tent I'd say that the M3 was only good to around 28F. You can probably drop another 8F or so with a tent and an insulated pad. I'm thinking of getting the M3 but YMMV.
      Note: I got my temp ranges from the Amazon listings but AegisMax (on their website) lists just -5C (23F) for the M3, which if you add a few degrees for my fudge factor seems about right.

    Hey Darwin, how is the breathability of the Aegismax bag? I see the inside is the same 20d nylon as the outside, and I have heard their previous stuff needs you to wear a base layer to not be damp inside the bag. They also make a quilt (aliexpress is cheapest), it's 850fp and packs down near as small.

Only issue I have with it is the amount of static charge it builds up, when I take it out of the big stuff sack (the white non compression one) that it came with I can hear cracklings of static shocks. Hey Darwin, have you used it often in the last two years? Do you have anything to add after a long-term use of the aegismax?? It's still on the market, and thinking of buying it, so I'd like to hear reviews from long-term use.

      Hello MarinosCh, you can find reviews on several website which selling this, like amazon and aliexpress, instead lots of chinese customs bought this on Taobao, though the review is all in Chinese, may use the translater haha. Besides, from what I heard this headless sleeping bag completely worth the price, it use Tory iFlex 20D nolyon as a shell, and the 800fp goose down inside it is not DWR down or RDS down, but the loftness worth the price. For me I will not choose this,because my goal is to be lighter and lighter, also I may sometimes go through some cold areas, and I need something to be warm enough as I am a cold sleeper. To be honest I haven't meet anyone who is colder than me in the Winter, Shanghai. I use a customized backless headless ultralight quilt which made in Hebei, China, 700g 900fp white goose down(not DWR down), 10D nlyon(21gsm) and these raw materials are all made in China , it cost 230USD, its a little expensive for normal hikers but may a bit cheap for ultralight hikers. Cheaper thinks may not bad then expensive one: the Tory iFlex20D nolyn is heavier than the 10D nolyn but must be more durable. Hope this helps.

    Hey darwin i was wondering, when you said on the 40s and not the 30s..you mean just the base layers? im curious if it would work fine down to 0°C (freezing, 32°F) with just a lighweight merino base layer and a lighweight (100) fleece or something similar

    I am very skeptical of the advertised temperature ratings. Sorry I don't know how it's called in English, but the sewings traverse the whole thickness of the bag. In other words, at the stitchings, the thickness of down is zero. In my experience, it really cannot be any good at low temps.

    Hi, backpacking newbie here trying to buy all my gear to get started. I'm on a low budget and would like to save cost. I've been doing ALOT of research. I'm getting a used REI Half Dome 2+, Klymit V Static pad, and a Teton Sports 4000 65L pack. I am stuck between Hyke and Byke 550 fill 35 degree bag and this bag you reviewed, which is 800 fill. Any suggestion on which one I should get? I'm planning on 30-40 degree nights at the lowest. My budget for the sleeping bag is $100. You mentioned this bag should be good to 40-45 and maybe I can get a liner for colder situations? Or maybe I should just invest in a warmer bag... Please help and thank you.

    Hi Darwin -- hey just a friendly comment, and I'm by no means an expert on this, but I think a concern is "responsible down" vs "irresponsible down". I probably got the terminology wrong but maybe the idea is that a review of down products might want to make that part of the discussion. If I get an inexpensive product (aegis ultralight sleeping bag?) only because of the suffering required of (China?) geese then I might want to pass on it and instead pay a bit more on something less heavy handed on the animals. As we all know "animals are people too". Hey keep up the good work. I'm jealous of your lifestyle!

    Not sure if you have done a video on colder sleeping bags, but is there a budget light weight cold weather sleeping bag? That one would work good in the summer, but up north here in Idaho, I have seen -25F where I'm at. Would like to find a budget bag that can at least go to 0-5F that's light weight. I can always add a liner if needed, but something closer to 0F would be nice.

      Hello D.A., Not sure what you mean by budget but AegisMax seems to have "budget" (low cost for the value, but really long ship times) bags. Their page for under -25C (under -13F) lists some bags in the $200+ dollar range and their most expensive model, the G5, lists -22F which with my fudge factor puts it at -17F. I hope that helps. Here's the link: www.aegismax.com/index.php/product-tag/l20/

      Keek Aegismax does a version of this sleeping bag but in a spring and fall version which gives it a warmer value.
      Aegismax spring/fall:
      28cm*15cm versus 21cm*12cm
      600g versus 560g
      Temperature zone is -3c to +2c vs +2c to +8c
      You'll be only paying a little more but that with a liner can easily get you to the -5c you're looking for

    Dear Darwin,
    Is there an UL bivy cover or sleeping bag liner you could recommend to extend your season and possibly help with waterproofing in the case of the bivy cover? Or maybe you would suggest an affordable winter bag and just switch it up as needed? I was thinking it might be nice to have just a liner or just a bivy for very warm weather as well. A penny for your thoughts?
    Thanks,

    Is this a sewn through bag? No baffles?It appears nice but I am leaning towards those companies that claim to harvest down in a slightly ethical manner. Such as only the down from slaughtered geese and ducks...rather than plucked three times. But now that I eread this comment...maybe I wont buy any more down items...better make mine last awhile! Thanks for the video about this bag tho...

      Indeed the sourcing of the down is what keeps me from purchasing this sleeping bag. I hope other consumers will also do their research on how their products are made. Personally i will not buy such a product if dozens of birds had a pretty miserable life for it. Im looking into making a DIY quilt from RDS or reused down
