I have been a big fan of this channel for a long time. Yes, I call myself a Progressive Christian. This conversation was wonderful and encouraging--two Christians sharing thoughts on the full essence of Christ's message. We must come before Christ with humility, honesty, and love. One idea I came away with is that the gospel is the entire story of Christ and his message about the kingdom--more than a condensed formula. There are multiple voices and views to entertain. I'm going to order some of Brian and Randal's books.
But what do you do with the Apostle Paul's argument in Romans about justification by faith? (Part of the reason I ask the question is because recently I have been studying Martin Luther's life and work in anticipation of Reformation Day, tomorrow.)
By the way, I experienced Led Zeppelin in 1969 at UC Irvine. Ticket price was $3.50. Small auditorium and I was in the front. Mind blowing sound. I was 17.
It sounds like Zahnd is saying a whole lot of nothing. Sure, there's beauty in the Jesus story, and it's not necessary that we understand every part of it in a formulaic way. But, what is the Gospel? Why should we care? Why should we share it? And coming from a Gen Z perspective, most of my peers have exited the churches and their commitment to Jesus in large part because we've found this Jesus thing to be empty, hollow, unimpactful, irrelevant, with no actual relationship with Jesus.
Such a great conversation!! Thankful for the work of both of you!!!
Great discussion. Love the Hauerwas mention at the end. I could talk to him for hours as well.
The fact Brian said Stanley is just too perfect. What i would give to eavesdrop on that conversation. What a thought.
Great interview! A lot of common things with What's So Confusing about Grace with "not having a system"
I love your attitude and work. I just bought several of your books at Amazon. You are a free thinker!
