Thank you Randal for these thoughful and instructional insights. I sense you have a genuine concern for the testimony of the church in America. I am grateful for your words. I find your videos to be very helpful in understanding what a practical living out of my faith ought to look like.

This raises an interesting question. Do we need a creed? Do we need to assume some things are true for which we have no factual or historical evidence to count as "Christians"? A few examples: Can we follow the teachings of Jesus without believing in the virgin birth (attested in 2 gospels, not attested in 2 gospels)? Do we need to believe in the trinity (a teaching developed by the church, but not directly mentioned in the bible)? Do we need to subscibe to all of the Nicene Creed; only to what is in that creed? Where do we draw the line between myth and history of the bible? Can you display the fruits of the spirit in Gal. 5 or the fruits of love in 1. Cor. 13 only if you have a certain creed?

We must turn from this evil man. We have to recognize who he is.

Another take on this is where people have convinced themselves, almost self hypnotised themselves that Trump is not guilty of the things he is accused of. That it is all a political witch hunt. It’s very sad to see so many blanket judgmental comments against evangelical Christians who voted for Trump. Some of us voted for Trump to reinstate policies that will help the thriving of all Americans. My beliefs are not “shallow and empty.”

There are no common Christian creeds apart from the elemental ones: love of God the Father, love of neighbor as oneself, love of Jesus as God's ultimate revelation. When you hit my age (75), you realize that these elemental creeds are all that you ever needed to live a meaningful life, and all that you will need to surrender that gift of life back to its Giver. As for all the rest of it, the adversarial theological wrangling and endless doctrinal disputes, this old man advises younger folk to simply let it go, let God sort it out. I forgot to mention the simple, sublime upshot of these elemental creeds, apart from enabling one to live a meaningful life. Perhaps Julian of Norwich famously put it best: "And all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well." Ain't that enough for living and dying?

The irony is that what she won't admit is that she is a liberal Christian. She is a conservative liberal, as opposed to a progressive liberal, but what's the problem with taking her logic a few steps further? They sort of try to retreat back to a narrow interpretation of scripture to prevent what they might see as a "slide" into progressivism, but they never really justify why someone should agree this is the right approach to take other than sort of stating it as an obvious fact that we should. But what's wrong, from their own principles, with being a progressive Christian?

There is a thing called church discipline. Like with your extreme example of a christian husband wanting to kill his wife. There would should be the body of Christ intervening and all sorts of things. This is just basic stuff. If 2 people are heterosexuals and living together before marriage the church gets involved. If they claim to be Christians. No different if they are in a same sex relationship. If they don't submit and separate then they are disfellowship. If they do then you have won your brother or sister back.

Around 2003-2004, the Abu Ghraib torture scandal emerged, which was then followed by revelations of the CIA extrajudical detention and enhanced interrogation program, and for a while every Republican on the street (including my father who I swore was better than this) was arguing that torture is AOK, and that waterboarding isn't really torture. And some folks went to SERE to get waterboarded with those on the right changing their minds, and those on the left affirming that yes, this really is torture. It's when I learned that the United States are the baddies. At the time I couldn't explain my position well ( _Torture is the thing Darth Vader does to show he's really all that evil_ ) and would start a deep dive into ethical philosophy to understand why it's rightly and properly banned in the Hague Convention on the treatment of POWs (though apparently it's okay to torture spies, even though it's unnecessary and yields bad intel---I digress...) We human beings suck at politics, which is to say it's very easy for propaganda machines to manipulate the masses, and only small portion of us actually think about our own best interests and how to vote accordingly. So yes, this is going to spell the end of liberal democracy. We might figure out other ways to broadly distribute power but it's going to take some time and thought, and a society willing to try to implement it. The Great Experiment has failed, but then again, it was started in bad faith (and we can point to slavery and the lack of women's suffrage until the twentieth century to cite examples). The arc of the moral universe (or of history) is long but it bends towards justice... by way of consequences so terrible we swear to each other we never want to see them again. Maybe when we take such oaths this time around, we'll mean it for everyone down to the least of us.
