As a former Guard, I can answer your question as to why the driver sounds the horn. Along the Hope valley there are un-controled crossing points and a warning must be given. If you travel by train you may see a sign with a W on it. This is a reminder to the driver to sound the horn. In the old days it used to say Whistle on a wooden board, this is a throwback to steam days. The horn is also sounded as an acknowledgement to a hand signal or a warning to anyone working outside along the railway. The railway never sleeps.

Thanks Joanne, the pub was the Fox House. It is fantastic but gets quite busy for Sunday lunches etc. You can stay overnight in the car park when having a meal

Ey up I used to pass that pub on mi way home, I've never been in but it used to be busy int seventies. Glad I didn't visit nah. I worked at Ye Olde Nag's Head in Castleton when it had a proper restaurant and before that the Maynard Arms Grindleford. Last time I went back in 2017 they'd all gone down hill.
