So glad you enjoyed yourselves . My late wife and I stayed at the grand every year for about 15 years . Great that you liked it and just didn't find fault in every little thing as so many do. We went to that chip shop and I 26:57 think we even stayed in that room once. We loved Scarborough but sadly I can never go back there as it wiuld break my heart to go there without my wife . We always had the same attitude as you two. We went there to enjoy ourselves and not to find fault . Wonderful nemories yet now so sad . Warm wishes to you both . I hope you have as happy life as we did .
what a beautiful comment, God bless you and keep you safe. I know you loved her so much, you will be happy again, whether it be in this or the next life, happiness will come back, in a different form than before, but you will be okay, because you have a wonderful heart.
We booked a room a couple of years ago, wondering what we’d let ourselves in for, and we were impressed, lovely room, clean, and warm. The breakfast was spot-on too!
I love how down to earth and normal you are. I'm moving into my Renault Trafic full time next month, I'm pretty nervous about it but watching your videos has made me feel more comfortable. I'm in the exact same situation you were, rising rent, rising bills, and I've had enough of paying some one else's mortgage for them. I could carry on paying £700 a month for a one bed flat with about £400 bills on top, but I'm at that point now where my outgoings are about to overtake my wage. Looking forwards to getting out and getting on with it! Thankyou for easing my mind a bit! Love the content!
Invest in a really good fridge with plenty of space Guess you will get more battery's ect and a switch between van battery and others ect It's not that hard to do nowadays
I lived in the Grand Hotel for 2 years in the early 80s and absolutely loved it! I was a Redcoat when it was a Butlins hotel. Some of the best years of my life, thank you for taking me back in time, fabulous memories 😊❤️
Really glad to see they finally spent some money and got this place habitable again. As a former resident of Blackpool I've seen what happens to these lovely old hotels and my last visit to Scarborough circa 2013 gave me the impression the Grand was not long for this world! Great review and seems Britannia might have turned a corner to at least keep their places viable, shame it seems like a lottery as to what standard of room you get.
Work in the building trade, and have to admire the brickwork on the grand hotel those arches over the windows on the front are work from victorian builders it could never be replicated by anyone stunning building in its day, sadly left to wreck and ruin inside.its a shame its not been kept in better condition but money rules everything today.hopefully it can be restored .7 pound for a drink is about right in an hotel.great video guys look foward to part two
This bought back some lovely memories, my late Father loved Scarborough and retired there (well just outside) back in 2004. His mate had a small yacht which was kept in Scarborough harbor and they'd often go sailing to Whitby and/or Bridlington. Way back when I was 15 I went out on the boat with them, that was my first and last time, I was violently seasick and it put me off small boats for life.....looking forward to part two! 😃
Good to see the joke shop on the corner is still there. I think there was another one further up on the opposite side of the street from which I bought some itching powder to put mischievous use.
like a lot of hotels acquired by britannia, once grand places now run into the ground.same as the adelphi in liverpool, the prince of wales in southport, and the grand in llandudno, britannia have been voted the worst chain in the uk for 10 years on the bounce
Yes I agree wholeheartedly it’s the management that’s at fault the corner shop crowd they don’t have the same temperament or values we are expecting, you are better off just forgetting about these old ‘grand building’ once grand Victorian Hotels, unless ‘Britannia’ do indeed get kicked out of the Hotel industry, it’s a shame what they have done here, be on the safe side and keep away, go the established chain or similar!
Really enjoyed that night out... thanks for letting me tag along guys 👍 I can never drink beer after eating so I always have my fill of Guinness before eating then maybe a single malt after as a night cap... maybe squeeze in a shared cheese board too back at the hotel. thanks again, all the best, David x
Jeez me and my gf stayed in there, it was horrendous. A 2 hour cue to sign in, a dirty room; the bed sheets had never got changed from the previous occupant. Pissed up people in the night singing. Fire alarm going off at 4 in the morning and everyone having to vacate the building, dodgy food etc etc etc
Me and my misses booked a weekend there a few years ago , woman behind reception tried to shout at me for being 10 minutes early, told her to get the manager, he came through apologised and sorted our room keys , got to the room , hole in the wall no plug in the bath , bathhole full of pubes , booked out with a full refund 10 minutes later , absolute shitehole, even if they spent £20 million on it would still never stay there
Helen, you have a truly amazing singing voice. I clocked you post fish and chip shop whilst you and James were walking, and you were singing along to madness's 'it must be love', and from 19:43 - 19:53, I had to rewind it, it was so beautiful. Warm, rich and full of soul. Seriously, it was that good, I felt compelled to say something.
Stayed at at the Grand with national Holiday Coaches now Caledonian coaches you can't fall off I know some people expect the Ritz but for that price I think it is brilliant like the Adelphi in Liverpool that's another one right in the town centre and this one is right on the seafront all the best from Teesside 🏴
Relatively new to your channel James but am trying to catch up a few every night. Enjoyed every one so far and think you and Helen are brilliant. Must ask, is Helen always so jolly and smiley because in the videos she is a breath of fresh air to those of us who are feeling down. Thank you both so very much.
I've had some great holidays in Scarborough, lovely beaches, yummy food and drink, and not a million miles from home either. Scarborough, Whitby and Filey are nice places.
Brings back a lot of memories of when me and my late wife lived in Scarborough , we also stayed many times in the Grand Hotel it looks to have improved a lot since those days , thank you James and Helen for a great video your both a pleasure to watch take care look forward to future Vlogs .
Great video! I know I could have got more for my £90.25p at another hotel, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to stop at The Grand in Scarborough. I did, however, stay at the Wetherspoons Angel Hotel up in Whitby, which I can highly recommend. Not only was it much more welcoming, but higher quality & less expensive than The Grand. The breakfast was far superior too.
We absolutely love your videos! A great down to earth couple doing the rounds and loving a pint! All the best from Stamford Bridge👍 Keep up the good work👍👍
Fair play, seems you got very lucky with a decent room for a Britannia hotel, possibly could have been upgraded too as you might have got recognised as a blogger, even though you don't generally review hotels.
Me and my hubby go to the grand every year, we always go early for happy hour in the bar where the drinks are half price or cheaper anyway until its time to check in. None of the Jacuzzis work, they are supposed to be ripping them all out and putting ordinary baths in, we tried filling the jacuzzi for our granddaughter, it didnt work and as the water filled up to the holes a load of grime and slime came out of the holes so we got her out of it quickly it was discusting, but apart from that we always have a great break.
Really good video; I was born in Scarborough lived there till 1977, moved away to the streets of London, use to go back and see my parents and have my holidays back home. When mum and dad passed away I have never been back; this video really gives the feel of those cold stormy nights when I use to go out clubbing. The Grand has had some bad reports on and off, however you did it proud; oh I sang on the large staircase in a choir back in the day, thanks for the memories.
I absolutely love Scarborough and have stayed in the Grand twice, both stays were different due to the condition of both rooms. Its in need of a massive overhaul. Next time why not stay at the Bike & Boot across the square?
That fish looked amazing! I think The Grand hotel got a load of bad reviews because the illegal immigrants were running riot there. From this video it seems like they aren't there anymore though.
It will take more than bleach and fresh paint to make that hotel fit to be used again. I saw what they did to it and no sane person after seeing that would stay there. They used the whole hotel as one big toilet plus by staying their you're supporting people who sold us out.
Some years ago I was cajoled into driving from Northampton to Scarboro' to do some building renovation work. Asking a local about fish & chip shops, I was directed to an alley near a supermarket. Seeing the quality and amounts being handed out whilst in the queue, when my turn came I requested a substantial barrow-load, a girl behind me said "Excuse me, are you really going to eat all that" ? Not having food for 8 or more hours, I said "Yes"!
I wish we had booked there instead of the Travelodge across the road we were supposed to stay two nights as a rest from driving from further down south but due to the state of the room we left after the first night.
I've booked myself into some of the 'budget' hotels in Bournemouth earlier in the year for a few nights when having some maintenance/ building work done at home, and in comparison for £50 that place was a palace. Looking forward to part 2. Cheers James and Helen.
I was in Scarborough about a week or so ago and also stayed in this hotel. And my room was decent enough the bed was comfy and the bathroom had a nice walk-in shower so I had no complaints about the room. My only complaint is being woken up at 3:00am with a man shouting wake up and clapping for no reason so wasn't happy about that but didn't take me long to get back to sleep and wake up to a nice sunny morning...Only kidding it was pissing it down but hey sure do love the north of the country and looking to relocate there sometime and start a fresh there.
Hi! Did I detect that Helen has a good singing voice?! (you oughta exploit that James!) 😉 Those big seaside hotels, out of season, need to fill their rooms, so I guess that's the reason it was cheap? Always great value viewing your vlogs. The fish n chips looked fab! I've watched half of part 2 - will return later! 👍
I love watching you two, I loved living in Scarborough. It’s been a few years now since i left. I miss going to the sea 🌊. Thanks for another wonderful video guys 👍🏻😁❤️
It's a foggy Sunday mornin, and we happened upon you two nutters while finding something to watch... Brilliant, and we are now subscribed..good banter and our kind of humour too...Glad we found you...Sam+Jenny from clowne.👍
I love this video that much I'm subscribed. Glad you found The Craft Bar, it's my favourite pub in Scarbados. Two years ago I lived in The Grand for two months and I'm really glad you had a nice time.
What an absolute lovely couple ypou two are!! I think you were both very lucky at The Grand, must be one of the only nice rooms there. If you really want to treat yourselves to good seafood when you're next in Scarborough try Cafe Fish its amazing. Also our favorite hotel is Bike and Boot, but it looks like you already found your second home 😂
Scarborough is a lovely town, 15 miles from my home. I remember going to Fish Bar with my mum & dad when I was at junior school. That was 50 years back
I love Scarborough, i also like the Grand , its quite a surreal kind if place , its like a big haunted house during the winter months , you also meet some great characters, summer or winter i love Scarborough ❤️
Loved watching this video. Brought back so many memories. My parents were born and brought up in Scarborough, so most of our summer school holidays were spent 😊 there visiting relatives. My paternal Grandfather used too sell the tickets for the 😊 miniature railway at the North Bay. Did you visit Peasolm Park. My parents ashes were scattered there. Always wanted to spend time in the Grand hotel.❤
Brilliant James and Helen, we were there last week when the storm was raging and had a great time. We stayed across the road from you (Dickens Bar and hotel) and it was fab. You got lucky wigh that room! Love Scarbados ❤️ can't wait for the 2nd part.
My grandad was born in Scarborough in 1894 with his 14 family members off Scottish families (BAXTER) my last name my two oldest children well their 31 and 30 live their proud off Yorkshire we need are grass roots back stayed at the grand hotel over 30 times never once had a problem plus it’s sister hotel the royal over the road is beautiful with swimming pool down stairs you have too love Yorkshire thank you both for this wonderful evening 😅
The grand hotel has done a fair lot of improvements over the years still could do more but there are def worse there. But what an ace place to visit for a decent weekend brings back lots of memories for me. So thanks for that 👌
Very interesting video and you are an entertaining couple, (you look just right for each other), I have great memories of Scarborough. I worked at the Grand in the early 80's Butlins days, I was the photographer there for 5 years. I visited the Grand again briefly in September 2022 and was pleasantly surprised at how the Britannia Group have finally spent some money on a long overdue refurbishment.
You two ever come to southport again, try fllyd fish bar. Honestly just as good and deffo not as expensive as that. In fact I think that fish looked bit greasy compared to fllyds super crispy batter amazing chips and just yeah 10
Went there for a weekend early 1980’s, it was an absolute dump then, victorian plumbing with water hammer noise, carpets down the grand staircase were threadbare, glad to see it has changed !
Another great video. Me and June have never been to Scarborough before, but it looks an amazing place, even with the cloud and rain. Always my round too in Wetherspoons. 😜
Oh Lord help me. Ieft Wath Grammar awaiting my A level results in 1965. I. Worked at the Lifeboat as a still room assistant. What an eye-opening experience on how other people have to live! Loved em all and did my best for em.....
My dad and i used to visit Scarborough regularly gor days out,we would always go for Fish and Chips at thef Peasholm Pantry fish and chip shop, the best fish and chip shop in Scarborough. We would then have tea in The Teasmaid coffee shop again in the north side near Peasholm park,it was great. We have heard about The Grand hotel in Scarborough, i wouldn't stay there for all the tea in china.
Great video - thanks!! I had to laugh when you said "get it eaten!". I haven't heard that since I was a small child in York - my mother always said it when we screwed our noses up at sprouts etc. You seem to have liked the Grand, so I'm wondering why you gave it one out of five on the cover page of the video? I stayed there too when I was in UK last, (live in oz now) and I was ecstatic when I saw the view I had from my room. You're a lovely pair, and your wife is lovely looking. Thank you for sharing your time in Scarborough with us. Love from Australia x
Thank you, my mum always used to say that to me too. The image of the one star on the thumbnail is taken from a review on the TripAdvisor website. So many people jump on the bandwagon saying how terrible the hotel is but we think it's OK for the money.
Brilliant Vid!!! James! Your professional intro & apt background music very much appreciated!!! Great to see you both having fun and Helen’s whit and banter is a gem!
We love Scarborough and will be down in the van in a few weeks parked on marine drive. Will definitely be trying the Lifeboat Fishbar now after the 9.75 score as it looked amazing, and that fish and peas has got my belly rumbling. Another great vlog you pair and cant wait for part 2.👍
I'm a new subscriber and this is my first video. I enjoyed it very much, I was worried that you were just going to be negative about that lovely old hotel and am so glad that you gave it a fair chance....I can't believe the prices of some of those beers though!!
James, you have intellectual ears. The opening music border on pure genius ( as far as the choice of music is concerned ). It is the last piece of music one would expect for the sea front of Scarborough. The choice didn't just simply fit; it was fits-like -a-glove perfect.
We stayed in the Grand some years ago and we got that room with no window, the only time I’ve ever complained in a hotel, they moved us to another room which was just as bad. I think they had rooms for the so called upper class and other rooms where they ‘stabled’ the toffs servants.
Unfortunately, my granddaughter had a very difficult and traumatic event at this Hotel (with excessive dark “bureaucracy”). A beautiful bedroom with a copper bath was discovered on the fourth floor of this Hotel. The bathroom had a terrible smell of human waste and upon complaining the woman told us that the Fosse septic tank was completely blocked. The woman who sold us the room told us that the Hotel had completely emptied the septic tank a year before, which turned out to be false! At the official reception point we discovered that the septic tank had not been emptied since 1987 and this is the reason for the drain to be disgusting in the bathroom.
I’ve only one comment - wrecking ball then bulldozer - and by that I mean Scarborough not just the hotel. 🤣 Mind you any pub that sells Hacker Pschorr heife weitzen beer can’t be all bad. An excellent beer from Munchen, very rarely seen over here.
A late check-in combination with a 10 hr.check-out pretty brutal when for a similar price you can get a 12 hr check out at the Travelodge about a 5 minute walk south.
I love craft fairs. The whole experience looks quintessentially British and refreshing. The slow check-in reminds me of the Intercontinental Hotel in Hong Kong.
Nice room but I'm one to just find a place where I can sleep and freshen up, don't need a view unless I'm going to sit by the window all day. It's like when I've done a cruise, I get an inside cabin down low in the ship because I'm never in it but to sleep, I'm always out doing things and seeing the sights. Looked like a nice walk around the city and once again you scored with a good plate of fish, chips and mushy peas. Now do you like the strictly UK mushy peas without butter in the recipe or I notice that some recipes have butter in them. I've been looking to see how they're made. Our clocks get turned back this next weekend so you're a week ahead of us. Looking forward to part 2, thanks for a great part 1.
After seeing your vlog we stayed at the Grand on Sunday the 4th (just gone) and absolutely loved it. £35 for the room was upgraded to a window room. Cannot complain at all absolute bargain... thank you
@bythecurb The drinks where on the pricey side but the staff where lovely, the place was clean stunning hotel encapsulates victoriana.. 100% would go back
Have to say, stayed in the grand hotel for a couple of nights a few years ago, hmmm. Have to say best thing for those two days was the double decker bus to Whitby.
Great video guys. Just to let you know I booked that Halloween Psychic supper 3 weeks in advance, they rang me up 7 days prior to it and told me my tickets were being cancelled because I was going to be sick that night.😂😂
So glad you enjoyed yourselves . My late wife and I stayed at the grand every year for about 15 years . Great that you liked it and just didn't find fault in every little thing as so many do. Who books a room with no window to save a few quid? A Barnsley man, that's who 😆
Views are overrated!
Im sure James would have told Helen he booked a room without a window because he’d be gazing at her all night so a window would be a waste 😍

Those big seaside hotels, out of season, need to fill their rooms, so I guess that's the reason it was cheap?
Always great value viewing your vlogs. The fish n chips looked fab!
I've watched half of part 2 - will return later! 👍
Thank you, yes she has a lovely singing voice, she should be on stage 😊🎤
@@bythecurbNow she’s on UA-cam, she’s on a ‘virtual’ stage, so the world can be her oyster!! 😄👍
Hi Sam and Jenny, thanks for subscribing, glad you like the videos 😊
We went a few years ago. Yes, it's a tired hotel that's had better days, but it still hangs on to the grandeur. We loved it 😊
Loved watching this video.
We always go to Peasolm Park, we love it there
Really enjoyed your video. You have a lovely chemistry between you. It is my first video, will be watching more, cheers!
Thank you, glad you liked it
We once Booked in here a few years ago.!!! We booked out after 3hours. I’ll say no more.???
Brilliant James and Helen, we were there last week when the storm was raging and had a great time. We stayed across the road from you (Dickens Bar and hotel) and it was fab. You got lucky wigh that room! Love Scarbados ❤️ can't wait for the 2nd part.
Thanks Karlos, I know Dickens Bar :-)
My grandad was born in Scarborough in 1894 with his 14 family members off Scottish families (BAXTER) my last name my two oldest children well their 31 and 30 live their proud off Yorkshire we need are grass roots back stayed at the grand hotel over 30 times never once had a problem plus it’s sister hotel the royal over the road is beautiful with swimming pool down stairs you have too love Yorkshire thank you both for this wonderful evening 😅
Really enjoyed going out with you in Scarborough.
The grand hotel has done a fair lot of improvements over the years still could do more but there are def worse there. But what an ace place to visit for a decent weekend brings back lots of memories for me. So thanks for that 👌
The Fish & Chips look spot on. You can't beat it with curry sauce and no skin on fish either, bonus.
That has made me hungry
I’ve always wondered what it was like inside there. Better than I imagined
Hi guys great video and banter love it 🤗
Very interesting video and you are an entertaining couple, (you look just right for each other), I have great memories of Scarborough.
I know these places well i dossed in Scarborough for a few weeks love you xxx.
Stayed here a few times and totally enjoyed it and was in the room next your's on one occasion.
Its like an episode of the Shuttleworths. 😂
We stayed there 20 years ago, it’s was disgusting, really dirty, nice to see it’s much nicer now
Really enjoy your videos, what a brilliant couple you are, thank you
We love Scarborough and will be down in the van in a few weeks parked on marine drive. Will definitely be trying the Lifeboat Fishbar now after the 9.75 score as it looked amazing, and that fish and peas has got my belly rumbling. Another great vlog you pair and cant wait for part 2.👍
Thank you, tell them you saw it on my video, they might give us a freebie 😂
What a lovely old hotel, shame the weather's not warmer for you.🦘
That’s a great hotel and the pubs look fab ❤
I'm a new subscriber and this is my first video. I enjoyed it very much, I was worried that you were just going to be negative about that lovely old hotel and am so glad that you gave it a fair chance....I can't believe the prices of some of those beers though!!
Thank you and thanks for subbing, we always like to be positive about places
Love that you went to the lifeboat, that fish shop has been on my top 5 must trys for a few months now.
They were superb, we nearly went back the next day!!
@@bythecurb looking forward to seeing what you both get up to on day two.
I was expecting... I'm not putting the heating on untill December... Christmas Day, got to give them a treat 🤣🤣
Thank you for the upload James, 👍
My pleasure!
James, you have intellectual ears. The opening music border on pure genius ( as far as the choice of music is concerned ). It is the last piece of music one would expect for the sea front of Scarborough. The choice didn't just simply fit; it was fits-like -a-glove perfect.
Thank you, I spend most of my time choosing the music!! 😂
Just watched your stream for Scarborough, the fish and chips looked superb. Prices a bit steep for booz. Brilliant stream ❤❤
What a fab couple. Loved the video. Looking forward to more. 😊😆😆😆👍🏻
Thanks so much! 😊
Stayed at the grand in the 80s it was great then butlins hotel then 😅
Brilliant video. I never miss these vlogs. So funny!
Thank you
It must be love was one of or wedding songs. It was played while we signed the register.
Thank you, my favourite mushy peas are the ones that are soaked over night
After seeing your vlog we stayed at the Grand on Sunday the 4th (just gone) and absolutely loved it. £35 for the room was upgraded to a window room. Cannot complain at all absolute bargain... thank you
Brilliant, thats even cheaper than we paid. You can't grumble at that price
@bythecurb The drinks where on the pricey side but the staff where lovely, the place was clean stunning hotel encapsulates victoriana.. 100% would go back
Love Scarborough. Was there in August. The views are lovely there.xx
Not seeing Tom O'Conner must have been heartbreaking
People queuing up outside a chippy is always a good sign in my book
Have to say, stayed in the grand hotel for a couple of nights a few years ago, hmmm. Have to say best thing for those two days was the double decker bus to Whitby.
Great video guys. Just to let you know I booked that Halloween Psychic supper 3 weeks in advance, they rang me up 7 days prior to it and told me my tickets were being cancelled because I was going to be sick that night.😂😂
😂😂
You have to try the famous Hales Bar in Harrogate, gas lit and interesting clientele 😊 Thursdays are usually good, check for events.
