- Look up from the busy streets of New York City, and you might glimpse a flock of purebred pigeons swooping in circles around an abandoned tenement building in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Their aerial acrobatics are guided by their keeper, a streetwise Puerto Rican nicknamed 2Tone. On the other end of the borough, a man named Goodwin and his pal Super 13 tend their own pigeon coop and flock of 300 birds. Each man is trying to beat the other, to lure his birds away. It's about bragging rights but it's also about poetry, it's about religion. It's about finding that "true pigeon that will never break your heart," as 2Tone says.

@@mx7452 BE nice to them and everything you do should be really calm. So they know you can get them food and they know there save around you. Sometimes i take one of my homing pigeons inside. And there really confused where there are and don't know anything around them. So what do they do? They sit on my shoulder because that's what they know and feel save by.
@@mx7452 ITs better to keep the feral ones feral, they are not going to adapt well to a caged live. There is always tame pigeons that cannot really be released needing a home. IF you are in the US look for palomacy, they always have pigeons up for adoption, im sure there are many other orgs.

I favorite pigeon is the Birmingham roller. Use to raise them in the city and the country. Been out of the hobby for awhile now. It’s relaxing.
People don't realize how clever pigeons are and how interesting they are as individuals. My London pigeons do very well on peanuts but I have only a few loyal ones who show up a few times a week. My oldest pigeon is a little hen who has been flying into my garden for about 12 years.

90% of pigeons in cities die in their first year of their lifes. The others don't live longer than 2-3 years.
In nature, they can live up to 12-15 years !
They have nothing to eat, they are forced to eat trash and they freeze to death.
Pigeons can NOT live naturally in cities. They are only here because of breeders !

You cannot look after 200 animals properly, it's impossible to know them well enough.
Every generation of my family kept pigeons after coming to the US. This stopped when we moved to the suburbs when I was a kid. Now I live in a very rural setting and I see the pigeons who eat out of the corn and grain fields. I have a large 2 story shed with a loft. I am building nesting boxes up there and I’m going to start raising them again so my children can experience it too.

I thought "Flights" were mostly used for these rooftop games of recruiting deserters from your competitors flocks. He mentioned Polish high flyers. My father kept those and several other breeds. He was especially fond of silver Rollers, Doneks, and of course Indian Fantails, which were very pretty and made good "droppers".

FYI in my country Indonesia, we compete pigeons in a race 1 vs 1 and the competition has a few obstacles. Pigeons can strike from the sky with the female as the target. The speed of strike almost like a peregrine falcon.

My parents found a young pigeon that won’t fly away with its parents. They actually come and visit it when it is left on the porch. But it never leaves with them. I don’t know what to do for it.
The only petition I ever wrote up circulated and won was for protecting a pair of pigeons from an asshole executive manager where I used to work. I love birds, all birds and always wanted to keep pigeons since I was a kid. That was before I learned my great grandfather had a pigeon coop as well.
There may be multiple Pigeon Kings but only one of them will be great enough to be Bowery King.

Once, I found a pigeon on the street with a bloody neck and completely broken, bloody wing that was hanging onto its body but it was completely beyond saving...I called wildlife control and they told me all we can do is to either leave it to die or put it down (they didn’t bother to show up because city pigeons are not on their priority list I guess). I decided to end its suffering by smashing it with a big rock. 😟 I thought it would die quickly if I hit it on the head but it took a few hits to make it stop moving....gruesome and bloody ordeal but I tell myself that I did it a favor....May she rest in peace 🕊

What makes these birds dislike being handled enough to always try to squirm out of your hold, but not actually be scared enough to leave the pen and never come back?
My guess is that they're uncomfortable because of the abrupt way he catches them and how firmly he holds them, but in the end they come back for the reliable food supply.
